        Book Description

A bestseller in its Second Edition, the Third Edition of Assessing and Treating Culturally Diverse Clients has been extensively revised and updated with new materials to enhance the contents across chapters.

This book quickly summarizes key practical guidelines that all clinicians can apply when assessing, diagnosing, or treating culturally diverse clients. The author also addresses clinical work with African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian clients. Some of the topics covered include a description of cultural variables in the DSM-IV that may affect assessment and treatment across groups; explanations of epidemiological mental health data across groups; a discussion on how to apply data from culturally specific, biased measures; and a description of many of the important factors to consider during the delivery of treatment. This practical volume also offers guidelines for the prevention of attrition.

        New to the Third Edition:

Assessing and Treating Culturally Diverse Clients is an excellent text for any course in the mental health academic discipline.  It is also an ideal resource for mental health professionals seeking a  license to practice in their respective field.

        Book Description

Cross-cultural orientation programmes are designed to prepare people who are about to interact extensively with others from very different cultural backgrounds. Programme goals include development of better intercultural relations, smoother adjustment to problems and minimization of stress. In this volume a set of training materials has been developed that can form the basis of various cross-cultural orientation programmes. The materials are based on the assumption that there are personal experiences shared by people who live and work in cultures other than their own. These experiences include anxiety, disconfirmed expectancies, ingroup-outgroup distinctions, confrontation with one's own prejudices and attributions about others' behaviour.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for teachers and cross-cultural trainers.......2003-11-07

Cushner and Brislin's Intercultural Interactions is perhaps the most useful cross-cultural studies book that I have ever read.
Designed to be helpful regardless of the cultural background of those in the critical incidents, or the reader's particular culture, it is both highly useful as a reference book and as a teaching resource.
The first chapter is an excellent introduction for people who are about to enter another culture extensively. The second, which is full of information for teachers and cross-cultural trainers, is also an enjoyable read. The main focus of the book, however, is in the next eight chapters, which present over one hundred examples of critical incidents under themes such as host customs, family, tourist experiences, the workplace and education. The cultural backgrounds of the people involved in these incidents are very diverse, and include Americans (and their many cultures), Europeans, Asians, Latin Americans, Arabs, and also the physically disabled and the deaf. All the stories are believable, having been well researched, and well written. What is more impressive, however, is the trouble the authors have taken to validate them, asking no fewer than sixty professionals from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds to offer an interpretation. This kind of scientific approach is excellent, I think, and I also welcomed there being no right answer; only preferred ones, since the experts could never agree unanimously.
The final three chapters deal with issues of culture in greater depth, and also point to additional resources for teachers and cross-cultural trainers, which is all very useful.
If I were to have to find fault with this book - which I do not want to do, then it would be that I found interpreting some of the stories rather easy once I read the options, since they had just one juicy morsel of information about a culture that gave the whole game away. This is a very minor point, of course, and teachers and cross-cultural trainers who plan to use such stories in class will surely be able to manage.
I have not used Intercultural Interactions with my students yet, but I do plan to do so, and I am sure that they will enjoy learning from it, as much as I am sure that I will be using it for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent practical guide.......2003-06-23

An excellent practical guide for both students and teachers of
intercultural communication skills. The book provides a short, but
precise consolidation of the process of intercultural interaction, and
from there on focusses on identifying one of the most prolific tools,
the case study, employed to train intercultural communication
        awareness and skills.

The 'culture assimilator' technique requires the trainee to read short
case studies, or critical incidents, that present culture clashes
between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Trainees are
typically asked to select from a range of alternative explanations for
the incident. Through the process of discussing in groups, attempting
to draw a conclusion or discover underlying concepts, trainees learn
how and why people make judgements concerning the cause of behaviour.

The first third of the book provides a broad definition of
intercultural interaction and the issues involved at the point of
cultural misunderstanding (misattribution process). How the culture
assimilator facilitates the development of a more sophisticated,
layered understanding of cultural behaviour rounds out the
        introduction.

The middle section of the books contains a substantial
bulk of critical incidents and their accompanying explanatory essays,
which cover 18 major themes that reflect the places and situations
where people are most likely to encounter difficulties (workplace, in
the family, education and schooling, settling in and adjusting,
        socialising events, returning home, etc.).

The last third of the book looks at the application of the critical
incidents for an understanding of the emotional consequences of
culture clash, and provides further background for 'knowledge areas'
required to respond effectively to many every day behaviours.

For especially teachers and trainers this book is a rich source of
material to supplement courses or seminars, and a rare step-by-step
analysis of the development and use of a typical method of training
intercultural sensitivity. The authors guide the teacher and trainer
through the stages of administering the 'culture assimilator' using
sample incidents, and provide clear guidelines on how to construct or
tailor critical incidents key to their learners' understanding of
        cultural concepts.

The book, both as informational background and practical skills
training tool, can be used for diverse groups such as international
businessmen, teachers and teacher education students, psychology
professors, cross-cultural trainers, and even health care
professionals. The critical incident method can be adapted along
        culture-specific or culture-general lines, into role-plays, to
introduce a topic as a key point in understanding more complex
        concepts.

        Book Description

A best-seller in its first edition, the long-awaited second edition of Assessing and Treating Culturally Diverse Clients is here. Author Freddy Paniagua has expanded and updated his original work, offering effective, practical guidelines in dealing with issues that arise when dealing with culturally diverse clients. In this landmark volume, Paniagua addresses important questions, including: + Is it a good idea to conduct your first meeting with an African American client differently than with an Asian American one? + Should you treat an American Indian client with the same therapeutic approach you would use to treat a Hispanic client? He also provides clinical suggestions for working with African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian clients. Some of the topics covered include a description of cultural variables that may affect assessment and treatment across groups; explanations of epidemiological mental health data across groups; a discussion on how to apply data from culturally specific, biased measures; and a description of many of the important factors to consider during the delivery of treatment. This practical volume also offers guidelines for the prevention of attrition. New to this edition is a chapter that deals with a summary of cultural variables in the DSM-IV, which will make this volume even more valuable to professionals and educators across the fields of clinical/counseling psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatric nursing, social work, multicultural counseling, ethnic studies, and behavioral psychology.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of a second reading.......2001-05-14

Insightful and thought provoking. Will very likely read it again. Though I am not a psychologist, I found this book to be a helpful learning tool. As a student service administrator, I serve numerous individuals from various backgrounds. It is very important for me to recognize "the cultural, individual, and role differences" of the people I serve in order to successfully fulfill my duties. This requires continuous education on my part, and Dr. Paniagua's book has provided an integral part of that learning process.

        5 out of 5 stars A Terrible Book...If You don't Read it Carefully!!.......2001-05-11

[some think] that this "book is constantly overgeneralizing and making blanket statements about cultural groups." In the Preface, however, the author precisely alerted readers that this type of generalization should be avoided when reading this book and then proposed that the main feature of this book is to provide a summary of cultural variables shared by members of these culturally diverse groups (what is known as "cultural commonalities"), as well as a description of variables which appear specific to each group. This book has not only been considered a bestseller among current crosscultural texts, but it has also received many positive reviews. For example, a reviewer in the "Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology" wrote that "this book can be read many times and should be part of every culturally competent clinician's library." The review magazine "Choice" concluded that this book...will be useful for anyone...who delivers sevices to people of varying cultural groups." In addition, this book is in its second edition, meaning that a significant number of readers interested in the understanding and applications of cultural variables in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders among culturally diverse groups discussed in this book have found it extremely valuable to them.

        1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book!.......2001-04-19

I was required to read this text for a class and it was totally useless. The book is constantly overgeneralizing and making blanket statements about cultural groups. The focus is not on assessment appropriate for the individual, but assessment based on over generalized cultural assumptions. The book holds the basic idea that if you are white you are racist and have no cultural understanding. It also lumps varying ethnic groups together as if they are all the same. (For example, in the book, all Asian cultures are the same and summed up in one small chapter. There is also a Hispanic chapter that is meant to include all South American countries, Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, etc. as if all these countries have the same culture.) I found that all this book did was focus on differences and worked to divide cultural groups more than they are already divided. If you buy this book you are wasting your money. If it is required for school, then that is really too bad.

          Book Description

Within our increasingly diverse society, the needs of patients from other cultures, especially the minority ethnic groups, are being recognized at local and international levels. Recent data, however, indicate that the realities in service delivery do not mirror this. Cross-cultural Psychiatry provides a practical guide for mental health professionals to 1) recognize culture specific differences in presentation within clinical settings; 2) understand differing idioms of stress and distress and accord them appropriate prominence; and 3) thereby improve the delivery of services, their acceptance by individuals, and the overall quality of care. Focusing on clinical skills, and drawing on case studies in actual practice, this invaluable guide shows how best to develop traditional clinical practice for today's cross-cultural client.

                Book Description

This book summarizes recent progresses in inorganic fluorine chemistry. Highlights include new aspects of inorganic fluorine chemistry, such as new synthetic methods, structures of new fluorides and oxide fluorides, their physical and chemical properties, fluoride catalysts, surface modifications of inorganic materials by fluorination process, new energy conversion materials and industrial applications.

Fluorine has quite unique properties (highest electronegativity; very small polarizability). In fact, fluorine is so reactive that it forms fluorides with all elements except with the lightest noble gases helium, neon and argon. Originally, due to its high reactivity, fluoride chemistry faced many technical difficulties and remained undeveloped for many years. Now, however, a large number of fluorine-containing materials are currently produced for practical uses on an industrial scale and their applications are rapidly extending to many fields.

Syntheses and structure analyses of thermodynamically unstable high-oxidation-state fluorides have greatly contributed to inorganic chemistry in this decade. Fluoride catalysts and surface modifications using fluorine are developing a new field of fluorine chemistry and will enable new syntheses of various compounds. The research on inorganic fluorides is now contributing to many chemical energy conversion processes such as lithium batteries. Furthermore, new theoretical approaches to determining the electronic structures of fluorine compounds are also progressing. On the industrial front, the use of inorganic fluorine compounds is constantly increasing, for example, in semi-conductor industry.

"Advanced Inorganic Fluorides: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications" focuses on these new features in inorganic fluorine chemistry and its industrial applications. The authors are outstanding experts in their fields, and the contents of the book should prove to be of valuable assistance to all chemists, graduates, students and researchers in the field of fluorine chemistry.

                Book Description

This monograph presents an approach to complexity theory which offers a means of analysing algorithms in terms of their tractability. The authors consider the problem in terms of parameterized languages and taking "k-slices" of the language. In doing so, the reader is introduced to new classes of algorithms which may be analysed more precisely than hereto. The authors have made the book as self-contained as possible and a lot of background material is included. As a result, computer scientists, mathematicians, and graduate students interested in the design and analysis of algorithms will find much of interest in this book.

Many NP-complete problems are solvable in very good time if one of the parameters is bounded. This book investigates this phenomenon. Over half of the book is about ALGORITHMS to SOLVE NP-complete problems FAST if one of the parameters is bounded. THis should be of interest to ALL computer scientists, not just theorists. The rest of the book is about ways to proof problems are NOT of this type, and misc other stuff. This last half is of interest to theorists but not really to anyone else.

The book is well written and gives insight into a new and interesting way of looking at Complexity Theory which has practical importance.

                  Book Description

Parameterized complexity theory is a recent branch of computational complexity theory that provides a framework for a refined analysis of hard algorithmic problems. The central notion of the theory, fixed-parameter tractability, has led to the development of various new algorithmic techniques and a whole new theory of intractability. This book is a state-of-the-art introduction to both algorithmic techniques for fixed-parameter tractability and the structural theory of parameterized complexity classes, and it presents detailed proofs of recent advanced results that have not appeared in book form before. Several chapters are each devoted to intractability, algorithmic techniques for designing fixed-parameter tractable algorithms, and bounded fixed-parameter tractability and subexponential time complexity. The treatment is comprehensive, and the reader is supported with exercises, notes, a detailed index, and some background on complexity theory and logic. The book will be of interest to computer scientists, mathematicians and graduate students engaged with algorithms and problem complexity.

                      Description:
A notion of multi-parameter complexity analysis of a discrete problem as the determining of complexities of its subproblems over all possible combinations of constraints on key parameters is introduced, and a notion of a basis system of subproblems is defined. Basic theorems on the existence, uniqueness and finiteness of the basis system are established. As an illustration to this approach, some results on the 4-parameter complexity analysis of the open shop scheduling problem and of the connected list coloring problem are presented.

                            Book Description

Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634), the first judge to strike down a law, gave us modern common law by turning medieval common law inside-out. Through his resisting strong-minded kings, he bore witness for judicial independence. Coke is the earliest judge still cited routinely by practicing lawyers.

This book breaks new ground as the first scholarly biography of Coke, whose most recent general biography appeared in 1957, and draws revealingly on Coke's own papers and notebooks. The book covers Coke’s early life and career, to the end of the reign of Elizabeth I in 1603 (a second volume will cover Coke’s career under James I and Charles I). In particular, this book highlights Coke's close connection with the Puritans of England; his learning, legal practice, and legal theory; his family life and ambitious dealings; and the treason cases he prosecuted.

5 out of 5 stars A joy to read for all..........2005-08-30

Whether one is interested in History, Law or just seeking some insight into someone who has shaped our world Allen Boyer's work is a pleasure. I must confess my exposure to Sir Edward Coke was rudimentary at best but over the course of this text I became familiar with his accomplishments and gained an intimate insight into Sir Edward Coke's life. Allen Boyer's mastery of the written word is quite apparent and his ability to entertain and bring life to this important historical figure makes the work a true joy to read. His tireless research and familiarity with the subject matter is found in almost every crafted word.
Simply stated, it is a must have for anyone interested in the history of Law, Sir Edward Coke and those who wish to read a finely crafted text.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon champion of the common law.......2005-06-02

Allen Boyer has produced a worthy successor to Bowen's The Lion and the Throne.

Boyer shows us the pragmatic Coke, the shrewd lawyer who energetically represented his clients. He also shows us the idealistic Coke, the jurist who championed and clarified the English common law.

Boyer's legal background makes Coke come alive, a lawyer's lawyer. Still an inspiration after 400 years!
