Helped me pass the Finance section of the CPA exam!.......2002-01-17
I sat for the May 2001 Exam and purchased the Wiley Finance volume to study from in addition to my review course. What a great investment! Unfortuantely the course alone was not helpful enough and I didn't pass the other three sections but I did ace the Finance section--thanks to the Wiley book. It gave me a clear understanding of what needed to be studied for the exam and plenty of questions. I'm sitting for the other three parts next May and I'm buying the Audit, A&R, and Business Law books to help me study. I know I'll pass this time around.
Excellent, focused and great help in passing CPA exam........1999-09-04
Book is very well organized (part of the detailed 4-book series from Pat Delaney, published by Wiley & Sons) and makes studying by topic easy to follow and understand. Each topic is followed by related questions, very similar to those on the actual CPA exam.
This book is more detailed than Delaney's 2 book set, and is specific to each of the 4 CPA exam sections. If you have passed some of the exam sections and need to redo one or two for whatever reason and have done ALL of the questions in the 2-book set and are looking for more detailed theory explanations, then this (or any of the other 3 in the 4-book series) book is the one to get.
Far exceeds the others (CPA Excel software, Conviser Duffy etc...) in ease of use, clarity of material and overall CPA preparation.
Overall, top marks.

Book Description
Bad Behavior, People Problems and Sticky Situations is a clear, easy-to-use toolbook designed to help managers, supervisors and team leaders efficiently work through interpersonal problems and difficult situations, generate win-win solutions, and move foward with confidence.
The first four chapters are practical "primers" on managing people, harassment, diversity and leadership- all written in Gregg Ward's engaging, information and personable style. Then, he introduces a raft of simple, down-to-earth, time-tested tools, many of which can be learned in less than five minutes. The rest of the book is packed with "real-life" case studies- all based on Ward's nearly 20 years of professional experience working with business, government and non-profit organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Practical tools for everyone.......2002-12-17
Mr. Ward's book is pleasantly free of theory and psychobabble and, instead, provides sound, practical guidance for dealing with the challenging people and situations that often trip us up. The "tools" section is especially helpful in providing specific solutions to a well-selected range of issues. Kudos to Mr. Ward for giving us what we need most -- practical tools for all levels of employees.
A Perfect Primer.......2002-09-06
This book was great! Practical applications for problems all of us in business encounter on a regular basis. I would recommend this book to every manager as a guide to handling those bad behaviors, problem people and sticky situations which, if you haven't had to deal with, you most certainly will. The case studies will be a great source of training for the rookies in my company and I think every training department should look at this as a 'basic' text for new supervisors and managers! Great book and great information.
Workable Solutions.......2002-08-27
This book provides managers with excellent, clear advice that is useful when seeking to remedy staff-related issues. A basic premise of this book is the application of workable solutions that ensure the on-going success of both managers and staff alike. The earlier sections address the basic principles of staff management and leadership while the latter sections provide case studies that are pragmatic, relevant, and readily applicable. The index is well constructed readily guiding the reader to those sections that are most pertinent for resolving specific issues. The material reads well and is logically presented. Gregg's writing style is energetic, candid, and to the point. I recommend this book to all who lead and manage staff.

Book Description
MCAT Success 2005 (the book was thoroughly revised in 2003) offers comprehensive preparations for all areas of the MCAT-Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and the Writing Sample. An essential part of any medical school preparation package, this book offers a thorough review of the science covered on the test-a benefit to those students who may have forgotten the information that they learned in their early college years.

Don't waste your money.......2005-06-23
The subject material was just glossed over, some important concepts were not discussed at all, the practice questions were too easy, and I found numerous errors through out the book. I was constantly referring to old textbooks and ended up giving up on the book. I suggest you save your money and buy a different study guide.

GREAT VALUE.......2003-11-08
Worth the price of the book alone are the key straategies for raising your score. They work!
Peterson's MCAT Success.......2001-03-26
This is by far the worst book I have used to prepare for the MCAT. I have found that many of the answers in the practice tests are wrong, there are many typos, and the verbal reasoning passages sound like they were written by high school students. Also, the biological sciences section of the MCAT is supposed to be 50% biology and 50% organic chemistry, but the biological sciences practice tests in this book contain no organic chemistry questions whatsoever.
Not worth it.......2001-01-12
This book is too simplistic. The areas that Peterson's is reviewing should be common sense to anyone planning on taking the MCAT. The only reason to purchase this book is to use its practice tests. They are not AAMC tests by any means. However, practice tests are important in quantity even if they lack the quality.
Not Bad.......2000-11-19
Its worth it for the price, but you better have other studying materials. Somewhat common sense, but good review.

Customer Reviews:
Average, but still better than most materials out there.......2003-08-25
The best features about this book are its science review sections that summarize concepts in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Organic Chemistry. At least for the 2003 MCAT, the book did a good job of condensing a huge amount of science material into a number of chapters that are easily readable within a few weeks. If you run into any completely new concepts, though, you'll have to refer to outside resources for more explanation.
The verbal and writing review sections are not too helpful, as they're easier than what you'll find on the MCAT. You'll need other resources.
Overall, this review book and set of practice tests definitely can help you prepare for the MCAT, though not as much as more commercial (and pricey) test-prep materials, such as from Kaplan, Princeton Review, or ExamKrackers. I'd recommend NOT BUYING this book, but instead borrowing it from your local library. Also, supplement this book with harder practice tests so you get used to more difficult items.
not the best or worst thing out there.......2003-01-03
I already took the MCAT and decided to retake it. This book gives a cursory glance at important info. and sometimes completely leaves out vital concepts. The examples are a little too easy especially for the verbal section. Also, the verbal section has not been updated for the 2003 test as advertised (they have 65 ques. instead of 60). Despite this, I did like the study tips that they give, most of which you can find in the AAMC student manual. It's an "OK" book to have, but the MCAT is way too important for you to risk depending solely on this book.

A Useless Book.......2000-08-05
This book had an insane number of errors, including incorrect formulae, incomplete questions and inconsistent answers. Not only that, but the "Practice Tests" were not anything like a true sample MCAT would be. Many questions tested irrelevant detail that would never be tested in this form on a real MCAT (e.g. "A midsagittal section will divide the body into: A. equal superior and inferior portions. B. equal lateral portions. C. equal anterior and posterior portions. D. unequal lateral portions.") Some of the Verbal Reasoning passages were on science topics--the true MCAT would never have science topics in that section. And even the writing prompts for the Writing Sample section are wrong! This book was a total waste of my money.
A horrible book.......2000-07-27
I found this book to be quite useless. It was poorly written and filled with editorial errors. Furthermore, the supposed "sample MCATs" did not at all resemble the actual test. Oftentimes, the science passages in the book were little more than a paragraph. In addition, the book stressed unimportant trivia while overlooking vital concepts.
inaccurate representation of the real mcat.......1999-07-25
the book doesn't even have organic chem questions! so biological sciences were just biology!!! and obscure biology w/ alot of terminology that you'll never need for the mcat! the science passages are far from the real mcat...everything is too easy!

I love this book.......2004-01-27
When I saw this book I thought that it was going to be just like the others, pretty boring and no life to it. So I just looked through it to prove myself wrong, Then I saw ,my sign so I had to stop and read it! I instantly feel in love, that book could describe me more than anything! What I like most about this book is it tells the truth ex: Your sign is not the perfic sign you have things to work on unlike the sign... I never read a book that told the truth in a fun way like this one dose. I hope you read this book I am sure you will like it too! : )
I love this book!.......2004-01-27
When I saw this book I thought it would be just like the others, all serious talk no fun to it, then I flipped to my sign. This book could not be more correct about me i was so amazed! This book was like for teens and it put everything with a funny twist.
The book talk about your sign in good way though it also points out that your sign is not perfict and what you need to work on an. Its a great book!

The Ambivalence of the Sacred: Religion, Violence, and Reconciliation (Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict)
ASIN: 0195102800 |
Book Description
As the Cold War era becomes history, we are entering an age when international conflict is increasingly based on racial, ethnic, national, and religious clashes--the most intractable sources of conflict, and those with which conventional diplomacy is least suited to deal. The particularly American tendency to separate political from spiritual life often tends to ignore a vital aspect of international relations--one that can be a powerful tool in negotiations. Religion plays a crucial role in many international conflicts, yet for the most part, diplomacy either ignores or misunderstands its role. This unified collection of case studies and theoretical pieces attempts to restore this missing dimension to its rightful place in the conduct of international diplomacy. Sponsored by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., this study offers the first systematic account of modern cases in which religious or spiritual factors have played a helpful role in preventing or resolving conflict and achieving non-violent socio-political change. Written by a distinguished roster of scholars, the cases presented span the globe, with examples from Europe, Central America, Asia, and Africa. Additional essays summarize the findings of these case studies to bring out their implications for foreign policy and the religious community. In the Foreword, former President Jimmy Carter states that the book "poses a challenge to diplomats and politicians, religious figures and laypersons, analysts and academics alike." Conceived to help call attention to and reinforce the positive contribution that religious and spiritual influences can bring to peacemaking, this important study offers practical guidelines for the future application of this kind of peacemaking in existing and incipient conflict situations.
Customer Reviews:
Earlier Review Has Vanished.......2007-08-04
Amazon sometimes eats reviews when editions change. I bought and read this at the same time that I bought and read the same author's book on "Faith-Based Diplomacy," and I just want to say, after reading the books and also hearing him speak, he is on to something very very important. I believe that we need an Undersecretary of State for Cultural and Religious Affairs just as we need an Undesecretary of State for Democracy and an Undersecretary of Defense for Peacekeeping. America is completely out of touch with the world, and genuine faith, not the American Fascist faith of the fundamentalist right, is a compelling moral advantage that we have lost sight of.
Here are some other books I recommend:
Faith-Based Diplomacy: Trumping Realpolitik
God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It (Plus)
The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right
The Republican War on Science
Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction
American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America
Shows Christianity at work not reported by press........1999-11-18
Many examples of Christians working, such as in Eastern Germany just after the wall came down. Very surprising. These are instances not reported by the press of actions for which the Christians sought to avoid media attention.
Book Description
Imagine you're a young boymaybe as young as three or fourseparated from your family by civil war, traversing deserts and mountains with little food or water, no medical care, and no protection from wild animals. Imagine watching hundreds of boys perish around you from hunger, disease, or attacks by enemy soldiers and wild animals. To most of us, it is unimaginable, but this was reality for "The Lost Boys of Sudan," thousands of young boys who were separated from their families and forced to walk approximately 1,000 miles to reach safe refuge from war and certain death.
For the first time, this award winning book offers readers a chronological timeline of the epic journey taken by these children, beginning in their rural villages of Southern Sudan and ending with their arrival as young men to the United States. Narrated through the voice of Joan Hecht, one of their American mentors, whom they lovingly call "mom" or "Mama Joan;" "The Journey of the Lost Boys" is a compelling story of courage, faith and the sheer determination to survive by a group of young orphaned boys. Because of Joan Hecht's personal relationship with them, she is able to portray their story in a way that most famous reporters and authors cannot. In addition to her extensive research of the political and historical events surrounding the long lasting civil war in Sudan, are the heart-rending personal stories and original drawings of the boys themselves. A must read for anyone interested in the the true story of the Lost Boys of Sudan!
Customer Reviews:
The tragedy of the children of Sudan.......2007-03-31
I can only summarize my comment about this book in a few words. The author Joan Hecht did a wonderful task in narrating the frightening and heartbreaking experience of the thousands of lost boys of the Sudan,Africa's largest country. Their dangerous journey involving thousands of miles in a very hostile landscape is incredible. The author's very kind heart, sincere consideration and admiration for these children is worth more than all the gold of the world. Very highly recommended for young and old.
Learning about Sudan? START HERE.......2006-10-15
This is the book you need to read if you are unfamiliar with the background of the issues in Sudan, the Lost Boys, and the issues faced by refugees who come to America. Ms. Hecht might not be an " academic", but she is the person with an enormous amount of first hand information on these subjects, and she breaks it down into managable pieces. Even if you are knowledgable on these subjects, this book is still useful as a clarifying tool. Ms. Hecht is also very committed, and that comes through on every page.
OUTSTANDING BOOK .......2006-08-11
Readers of this book will be touched by the stories of these incredible young men, who, at an early age, were separated from their parents and families. The atrocities witnessed by the boys are unspeakable. The author has provided the readers with stories that make those who have lived a life without fear take a new appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.
A good term paper.......2006-07-26
The endless conflict in Sudan is another calamity that the press should have been bombarding us with daily for years. A tragedy of such dimensions should torment our collective conscience. This is exactly why it deserves a better telling than Ms. Hecht is able to offer us. The writing is amateurish and the text cries out for the editing it appears not to have been subjected to. Easy streamlining and the correction of some grammatical errors would make the book more readable and more powerful. Ms. Hecht's devotion to the cause of the Lost Boys is clearly sincere and praiseworthy, however, and she does deserve thanks for contributing to making us aware of the atrocities that go on in the world while we turn the other way.
An accurate, heartfelt and well-written account.......2006-06-28
Joan Hecht's "Journey" is in this reviewer's opinion the most interesting and accurate book available on the topic of the Lost Boys. As a former foster father to one of the lost boys and a fellow author and researcher, I recommend the book without hesitation. It presents an extraordinarily complicated situation in a manner that is comprehensible, fascinating and accurate. It gives the reader a true sense of the horror, courage and hope that has gripped a generation of young Sudanese men.
For its rare photos, clear and organized presentation and sincere prose, I highly recommend this informative and inspiring book and thank the author for her outstanding efforts.

an orphan boys story.......2004-03-08
a true autobiography written by the author when far away from his childhood days yet he tells the story as if he was the age of his journey experiences. Hugo was evacuated to USA in 1940 - coming from tthe Actors'Orphanage in England he had to be sposored by British actors then resident in America. Hugo's sponsors were Gertrude Lawrence and Paul Robeson. He was also taken for summer holidays by other kind American families. He enjoyed being in the Boy Scouts of America. This is a story of interesting events of growing-up - including being caned when at the orphanage in England.(Noel Coward was the President of the Actors'Orphanage at that time. In America Hugo and his school mates were housed at the Edwin Gould Foundation in NY City and he attended Columbus High School in the Bronx. A real good read.
Memoirs of an Orphan Boy.......2004-03-05
This is a brilliant book. The author relates an entertaining and heart-rending historic account of his unusual childhood experiences in an actor's orphanage during the second world war period. It will make you both laugh and cry.

Book Description
The year was 1909, and one young boy found himself alone and unwanted, left to fend for himself in trying times. Russell J. Milne, Sr., orphaned at the age of five, was shuffled between relatives - and often strangers - to work for his room and board. Sent to live in Montana, he endured harsh winters working as a farmhand; braved treacherous working conditions as a miner in Butte's copper mines; and eventually owned his own successful business in excavation. Possessing an affection for animals, he also had an affinity for horses - of which he owned several in his time - and even trained one to jump into the back of his truck for a ride home, at the end of a long workday. He was also an excellent rider, and, at one time even participated in a rodeo. This story recounts his many adventures, how he overcame seemingly impossible obstacles as a young orphan, to rise to the top and become a successful entrepreneur and family man. His story is truly an inspiration to future generations - and that anyone can succeed, if they choose to do so.
Customer Reviews:
An inspirational and adventure-packed read........2002-11-03
Orphan Boy is an interesting read. The book recounts the true story of a boy left parentless at an early age, his struggles to earn a living--or sometimes just to survive--in the early 20th century West. It's an inspirational story of a boy who never relented, and always forged ahead to make a better life for himself. It was never easy for him, but his persistence paid off. As his life progressed, he became a very successful businessman--quite a change from the often homeless, disregarded boy of his youth, who sometimes wondered where he would get his next meal.
I encourage you to read Orphan Boy for its overall message of persistence and ingenuity. The story of how this boy (Russell Milne, Sr.) was compelled to survive and succeed in a tough world is truly a motivational read!

Book Description
The Lady and the Law The Remarkable Life of Fanny Holtzmann A WAIF FROM BROOKLYN, SHE BROUGHT THE MGM COLOSSUS TO ITS KNEES This is the amazing, true story of Fanny Holtzmann, a shy teenage high school dropout from Brooklyn who battled her way into Fordham Law (the only girl in the night school class of 1923), overcame ridicule and prejudice, and emerged as the most glamorous, unpredictable, brilliantly accomplished woman lawyer of her time. Noel Coward, Eleanor Roosevelt, the Grand Duchess of Russia and George Bernard Shaw were her friends; Joseph P. Kennedy her bitter enemy. Critical Comment: A lively, at times hilarious, and often moving account of the life of the witty and formidable lawyer Fanny Holzmann. Daphne du Maurier An admirable job. Fanny emerges not as a fairy-tale princess but as a generous human being who makes some mistakes and unwittingly hurts a few people along the road to success. A good old-fashioned success story is good for the soul now and then, and this one is a winner. Buffalo News An affectionate biography . . . more about the lady -- the negotiator, diplomat, party giver, painter and friend of artists, actors and authors -- than about the law; an account of a woman who had led a remarkable, charmed life. New York Times An awe-inspiring and highly engrossing life story, a major work of social portraiture for our era. Meyer Levin in Midstream An extremely well written and fascinating story. George Burns An absolutely fascinating book. Sheilah Graham A remarkable biography. Berkman, a fine writer, has looked beyond the obvious and inherent glamor in this story to write a coherent, compassionate and penetrating account . . . Even Walter Mitty would not have dared fantasize about the meteoric life Miss Holtzmann has so demonically pursued." St. Louis Post-Dispatch "When the subject is truly fascinating, and the biographer has done his job well, (biography) can provide the most soundly satisfying kind of reading. Ted Berkman's book is engagingly personal. The important point, enchantingly made, is that Fanny Holzmann is indeed remarkable . . . She is a joy to know, and author Berkman has done a magnificent kindness by sharing her with us." Norman Nadel, Scripps-Howard Cultural Editor "A wonderful mix of news, nonsense, humor - you name it. Fanny did work wonders which still amaze and dazzle the most jaded reader." Patricia A. Farrell, King Features Syndicate "With earthy Yiddish wisdom, Fanny Holzmann guided the personal lives and fortunes of movie moguls, diplomats, and royalty. She commuted between Broadway, Hollywood, and overseas capitals and entertained foreign ministers in her living room. Profoundly inifluenced by her grandfather's Talmudic reasoning, she acquired a persistent, flexible, and imaginative approach to the law. 'I don't follow precedent,' she once said. 'I establish it.'" Anne Bowers, Best Sellers "Berkman conveys the personality of Fanny Holzmann and a sense of her law practice with economy, wit, and lucidity. I had my copy with me in Boulder, Colorado. There I saw, the Rockies over my left shoulder and the world of the Shtetl eight thousand miles away. I read about Angela and Tante Fimme and cried from beginning to end. My hat is off to you." Irving Younger, Cornell Law School
