Lends itself to browsing or opening to a page and random.......2002-07-07
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Facilitation Skills: Helping Groups Make Decisions by training and development manager and facilitator Gregory B. Putz is a step-by-step guidebook for organizing and promoting cooperation. Facilitation Skills concentrates specifically on the role of the facilitator, whose duty it is to remain neutral and help the team arrive upon a decision, as opposed to the role of team leader. Each individual page offers different tips, tricks and techniques in easy-to-read format that lends itself to browsing or just opening to a page and random. Simple black-and-white sketches illustrate this superbly presented, highly recommended, "user friendly" guide for anyone assuming responsibility for team facilitation.
Was this book ever proofread?.......2002-06-19
A very simple book, it does give some insight into facilitation, but I found it very irritating that there were typos on nearly every page! When words like 'expect' are used instead of 'except' the whole meaning has changed. And a whole page of this small guide devoted to how to turn and tear pages from a flipchart? This is a very low level primer on this subject. As a student of cooperative leadership, this book did little to enhance my knowledge of the process of facilitation.
Best Facilitating Book for My Company.......2000-12-01
I own a consulting firm and I needed a good book for my consultants to study to become good facilitators. I ordered and reviewed every facilitation book available on Amazon and sent them all back except this one. This book is well-written and organized, and hits all the important points needed to become a solid facilitator quickly.
Good Facilitation Template.......2000-09-06
I would recommend that this book be read by every project team leader as it does a good job clarifying roles of teams, its members and facilitation basics (right down to which color markers to use on a flipchart.)It's a good, nuts and bolts template for first-time facilitators. I'm an experienced technology trainer (6 years). This book was a quick-read and worked well for me when I needed to work with a task force troubleshooting interdepartmental communications. Book needs some proofreading - found lots of grammatical errors (distracting to me). Case study examples mainly focused on "what went wrong" but did drive some good points. Not an in-depth facilitation resource but worth it's price.
Book Description
Linking alchemy, anthropology, politics, and science, Antony Wild uncovers the intrigue that coffee has woven into its 500-year history.
Coffee trader and historian Antony Wild delivers a rollicking history of the most valuable legally traded commodity in the world after oiland an industry that employs one hundred million people throughout the world.
From obscure beginnings in East Africa in the fifteenth century as a stimulant in religious devotion, coffee became an imperial commodity, produced by poor tropical countries and consumed by rich temperate ones. Through the centuries, the influence of coffee on the rise of capitalism and its institutions has been enormous. Revolutions were once hatched in coffeehouses, commercial alliances forged, secret societies formed, and politics and art endlessly debated.
Today, while coffee chains spread like wildfire, coffee-producing countries are in crisis: with prices at a historic low, they are plagued by unprecedented unemployment, abandoned farms, enforced migration, and massive social disruption.
Bridging the gap between coffee's dismal colonial past and its perilous corporate present, Coffee reveals the shocking exploitation that has always lurked at the heart of the industry. 8 pages of color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A spider shouldn't drink it.......2007-01-09
Antony Wild's (2004) book is The Good Tea and Coffee Company book of the month for January 2007.
At the outset, it claims to be a 'dark' history and it certainly doesn't disappoint in that respect.
Though sounding a little extravagant in portraying coffee as the 'forbidden fruit' in the Garden of Eden of the Old Testament, each chapter touches on sensitive ethical issues which are moving ever higher on the priority list of European consumers.
Tracing the origins of the cultivation of coffee back to the Yemen and the early attempts to create plantations elsewhere by The East India Company, we are taken on a journey of unexpected complexity as coffee finds its way into the social and religeous infrastracture of every continent it touches.
By the end of the book, we've had a lot more for our money than simply history. Antony Wild makes us look anew at something we have grown up with and almost taken for granted. He gives us the tools we need to think again about coffee - to bring it out of the darkness.. and into the light.
Good Beans, half-brewed.......2006-12-05
One of the psychological effects of stimulant drugs is that they
are disinhibiting. That is, they erode our reluctances and our
inertia, they lull the pinch-nosed censor that lives in each of
us and stir up the grinning satyr. (Certain stimulants, like
the amphetamines, are so radically disinhibiting that their use
is associated with violent and self-destructive behaviour ).
There is probably no inhibition that we lay down as joyfully
as shyness and in the customary doses, that's just what
caffeine does. You might say that it turns up the pressure
on the expression of stray thoughts and feelings while it
loosens the valve that holds them in.
It's no surprise then that coffee was introduced
to Europe along with a social setting that harmonized
exquisitely with its use. The setting was the coffee
house, a place where coffee was served and conversation
was encouraged. The first coffeee house in England was
founded (in Oxford) by a man named Jacobs who brought
both the beverage and the idea with him from the Middle East.
The brew and the place proved to be very popular with
the students . It was so popular as a focus for meeting
and discussion that the Royal Society was founded there
in 1650. Lloyd's Coffee House in London eventually became
the famous insurance institution.
It's likely that the stimulant effects of coffee
would have been less appreciated had there not also been
an environment where those effects could be seen as a
virtue. It's hard to imagine that the taste would have
been appreciated at all if it had been presented by itself.
The popular reaction to coffee was nothing like
a response to a new food and everything like a response
to a medicine. Authorities in Prussia and England tried
to ban coffee and coffeehouses. Voltaire drank an
astonishing 50 cups a day and claimed that he could
not have written philosophy without it. Immanuel Kant
was reported to have whimpered when his coffee was
delayed. Perhaps most instructive is the testimony of
Balzac whose 100 novels suggest a certain frenzied
hyperactivity. Speaking of the effects of coffee, he said
."..Ideas begin to move like the Grand Army
of the Republic on the battlefield. Things remembered
arrive at full gallop. The light cavalry of comparisons
delivers charges, the artillery of logic hurries up with
trains of ammunition, the shafts of wit start up like
sharpshooters. Similies arise, the paper is covered
with ink; for the struggle begins and is concluded with
torrents of black water, just like a battle with powder."
This feverish testimony isn't an endorsement of flavor,
aroma and body., it's a love song to a psychoactive drug.
In the same way, Wild's useful book concentrates its energy
on the social and economic aspects of
the coffee trade. This discussion is not well-documented and
has a bit of a testy anti-american bias. The (to me) central
question of how this bitter concoction came to be the subject
of a grand connoisseurship is left untouched.
None the less, a useful book to introduce the subject.

the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN 9781601640005
Coffee: A Wild History.......2006-04-04
I recommend that you peruse the pages of this book at your local library or book store prior to purchasing. The author has compiled 308 pages of supposed facts, ideas, opinions, and "objective illumination." No doubt some of the data provided is true and the first 83 pages engross the reader to the beginning of the history of coffee. Unfortunately the narrative then seems to fall apart not because the information may be false or questionable, but rather the author goes off on tangents which seem to simply fill up the pages. Is Rimbaud's influence on Bob Dylan and Patti Smith necessary in the discussion of coffee?
There comes a point when the reader realizes that the author's writing is more of free flow of thoughts and assumed facts. Add to this the lack of citations and notes (which the author fully acknowledges) and the book becomes a jumble of many figures, dates, places and people that lacks organization.
Wild delivers a strong brew to the US.......2005-09-08
This is my first introduction to anything about coffee's history and how coffee affects the global market and economy. I am simply a person who likes my morning joe and an occasional coffee house treat! I found the history part of this book fascinating. However, was taken a-back by Wild's strong anti-US feelings about the USA's treatment of Central and South American countries. His treatment seems biased--still, the reader needs to remember that he's a Brit living in France. Overall, a good read.
Good book, more like a text book........2005-08-08
Library Journal
Wild (The East India Company) has been widely recognized for introducing specialty coffees to Great Britain. Here, he presents a 500-year history of the much-loved drink, drawing on science, politics, anthropology, and alchemy before concluding that today's large companies, with their demand for lower prices, have put coffee farmers out of business and thousands of workers out of jobs in Africa and Central America. Wild's explanation of how major corporations have taken over the coffee industry, supported by public information direct from the coffee distributors themselves, will inspire readers to comtemplate their contribution to this global situation. The only comparison would be Stewart Lee Allen's The Devil's Cup, which describes similar facts but from the first person. With its political and historical perspectives, this book reads more like a textbook. Recommended for academic libraries; an optional purchase for others.-Jennifer A. Book Description
Big Bang Cosmology is now a wide research field spanning the search of dark matter to space observations of cosmic background anisotropies. The proceedings of this conference bring together the work of high energy physicists and cosmologists. In each field, alternative interpretations and crucial future observations are discussed, such as: What is the best experiment for detecting dark matter? What is the crucial observation for measuring such cosmological parameters as the Hubble Constant? Are galaxies formed through growing gravitational instabilities or through the condensation of matter around topological defects? To what degree are the anisotropies of CBR observed by COBE and other experiments contaminated by known and unknown galactic components?

Book Description
Describing novel methods and catalytic strategies to conserve and maintain air, water, and soil quality, researchers from a range of disciplines discuss the role of interface science in environmental remediation. They detail approaches to separate, reuse, recover, and treat potentially valuable materials using techniques in ion exchange and adsorption; develop and design new catalysts to enhance production, energy, and cost efficiency; and evaluate and improve existing treatment strategies for recycling of plastics and wastes. The 17 studies were developed from presentations at the symposium Application of Interface Science to Environmental Pollution Control (Chicago, August 2001).

Book Description
This volume covers the proceedings of an international conference held in Oxford in June 2002. In addition to articles arising from the conference, the book also contains the famous as-yet-unpublished article by Graeme Segal on the Definition of Conformal Field Theories. It is ideal as a view of the current state of the art and will appeal to established researchers as well as to novice graduate students.
Book Description
This is no run-of-the-mill WWII book. It is the exciting story of a cook in the Army Air Corps. It tells of his unauthorized move from the kitchen to life as an aerial gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress in the unfriendly skies of Europe in 1943 to 1945. You will laugh cry and share in his life as he fights for his country while snatching moments of relief and love between missions. For those who were there it will bring back memories. For others, it will tell what it was like for grandfathers, fathers and uncles.
Customer Reviews:
I wish I had talked to him about it while he was still living.- Author.......2006-12-23
With a deep respect for my late dad's generation of WWII veterans, I recently listened as one recalled a bit of his WWII exploits as a B17 tail gunner. Time flew, the graduation party that brought us together was over, and I left to return home.
I looked forward to hearing more in future meetings. Sad to say, that'll never happen. Louis Holmer has taken his tales with him in passing away on December 6, 2006. WING DING Memories of a Tailgunner enabled me to appreciate him even in his absence. My thanks go out to Lt. Col. Gene T. Carson RET for writing of his experiences and allowing future generations a glimpse into WWII history on a very personal level.
Excellent.......2006-08-27
World War II is a long-ago event. In most of our minds, it's something we hear about but give little thought to. For many, all they know about this highly significant event in our past comes from literature. WING DING towers above the rest of that literature by putting a human face on the events that shaped a generation.
Compelling reading and gripping drama from the first page to the last. Gene Carson is a gifted storyteller, writing in a simple style which is free of hyperbole, moralizing or melodrama. The story is the main thing, and it is a story indeed.
Tragedy, humor and acts of courage are presented in a way that make for irresistible reading. We should be grateful that Carson has chosen to share his story with us, because what happened so long ago should not be forgotten.
How To Answer The Call At 30,000 Feet When It's 50 Below...........2002-12-06
..And The Fighters Are Making Their Run. Gene Carson does an excellent job relating the fear of not knowing where the next flak round is going to burst, or on which mission his luck will run out. After their 10th. mission, the aircrews were living "on borrowed time". Death in a B-17 came either from the determined cannon of German fighter pilots, or the random blast of German Flak. It came from flying or bombing accidents or it came from walking across Poland and Germany for 75 days during the worst European Winter in a hundred years. You could bleed to death in your flying suit, pass out and die when you accidentally disconnected your oxygen supply, or ride a doomed bomber all the way down because the centrifugal force kept you pinned to the airplane a few feet away from an escape route. Some died on their first mission, and some on their 25th. Not many fought the Army bureaucracy to get BACK into combat flying after they honorably completed their first tour. Gene Carson did. He also stayed in the Army and went from "glamorflyboy" to "groundpounder" with the 82nd. Airborne Division. "Wing Ding" (and it's not the name of his airplane) gives us a look at the Carson brothers' lives from the time they were "half orphans" in a Pennsylvania trade school, to the point where Gene goes back for another tour after learning John has been shot down. After his brother was shot down, Gene Carson's war was no longer about surviving the requisite number of missions and going home. It was now about staying in the deadly game until he knew his brother was safe. Gene goes back without the slightest objective reason to believe John is alive, because they're brothers. The book has it's humerous moments, such as the manner in which Gene dealt with two different species of predator in the Florida Everglades.
At a time when our nation is hungry for heroes, we often don't have to look any farther than the older guy living right next door. The "heroes" of my generation are too often a gratuitous, polished, packaged largely manufactured product. The heroes of Gene Carson's generaton were just glad they survived. They were indeed ordinary men who did extraordinary things. Carson's "Wing Ding" will go on my bookshelf next to my favorite first-person accounts of men in battle.
Wing Ding.......2001-08-20
Col. Carlson told his story without a lot of hype. He makes one feel like they are there. It is a pleasure that I had the chance to serve in the Air Force with such men who gave so much. We of that War are leaving at a fast rate. Such great stories are all that will be left too soon.
A totally Unique Book!.......2001-06-21
This is a TOTALLY unique book. I have never found another book on World War 2, much less concerning any other war, that has ever taken this approach to writing : that is, telling a true, and WONDERFULLY interesting account by an author, who happens to be a twin, and where the author's twin brother almost ends up being a co-author of this same work. What we have is a true account of 2 brothers who were separated by War, and then came back together during that War, and once again were separated, only to be BARELY re-united at the War's end, in May of 1945. The perspective of this book by LTC Gene Carson IS very unique, and lends itself not only to World War 2 studies, but to Twin studies, as well. I ought to know, for I am a twin like Gene and his brother, John.
This book UNDOUBTEDLY deserves the 5 star rating for 3 reasons : a) It is well written and VERY lively & interesting! I hate needless parentheses. b) It is brisk, without a lot of the dull, turgid style found in some military narratives. Lots of nice, brief chapters that contain short but often VERY humorous vignettes. c) It's "twin-brother" perspective is unique and creates a storyline fit to be made into a motion picture. May I add that Gene has given the BEST account, among the many that I have read, about what LIFE (as well as Death) was like for those who flew in the heavy bombers, during the Darkest conflagration of War that the 20th century, or any century has ever seen.

Ever since his childhood days of rescuing, raising, and releasing orphaned blue jays and raccoons, William B. Karesh knew that working with wild animals was his calling. After training as a veterinarian and working for years with zoo animals, he developed the International Field Veterinary Program (IFVP) for the Wildlife Conservation Society, providing advice and assistance to conservation programs worldwide. His adventures battling bureaucrats, poachers, and other short-sighted humans while endangered animals lay sick and dying are recounted in Appointment at the Ends of the World. The book is an exciting, inspiring read that appeals to animal lovers, environmentalists, and devotees of amazing stories alike.
From Borneo to Zaire, Karesh has shuttled through much of the world to bring much-needed medicines and surgical techniques to populations of animals that can't afford to lose even one to disease or injury. Plenty of illustrations and color plates bring the rhinos, peccaries, and macaws helped by the good doctor vividly to life, and the maps and sidebars help the reader achieve a sense of place missing from so many world-spanning books. Appointment at the Ends of the World is as certain to enrage as it is to delight; more than this, though, it kindles the desire to reach out and help those in need. --Rob Lightner

A good storyteller, doing a unique thing.......2006-08-09
Since the largest portion of the book was about his sojourns in central Africa, it's quite obvious that this is his favorite place, but his adventures in Indonesia, South America, and other remote locales were interesting as well. The book was as much about his colleagues and friends as it was about him.
His "postcards", which described local culture, history, and politics, were essential to understanding his missions.
You can learn the most about him by Googling Billy Karesh; this appears to be what he wishes to be called.
Critters, politics, and humor all in one.......2005-08-16
Excellent book! I originally checked out this book at my campus library based on a recommendation from my uncle, a biology teacher. I enjoyed this book so much that I bought a copy after I read it.
This book is a must read for future wildlife veterinarians and wildlife biologists.
Dr. Karesh is able to draw you in to the many fascinating and sometimes dangerous places he travels to as a wildlife veterinarian. He also offers up a realistic perspective on wildlife conservation efforts in third world countries.
Hope you enjoy it.
So enjoyable.......2004-11-24
THe stories are incredible. In his writing he delivers the visual scene and feelings through his eyes, the animal's scene and feelings through their eyes, and the past present and future for these creatures of the Earth. I have passed this book on and purchased copies for others to enjoy, and they did.
Just Plain Bad.......2004-06-19
I'm a huge supporter and reader of animal books, especially those with veterinarian authors. When I first saw this book at the library, I thought, "Wow, a new twist on and old idea... a WILDLIFE veterinarian." However, it wasn't far into the book I got sick of hearing about irrelevant, uninteresting happenings. The author is cocky and self-absorbed. His attempts at humor and general likeability are pathetic and easy to see through. I'm a hardy reader and will usually force myself to finish off even the most boring of books, but it was about halfway through I had to shut it for the last time. I actually got angry while reading it because it was THAT bad!
I'd love to read it again.......2002-03-03
I read this book when it first came out three years ago, and I still think about it. His stories about the wonderful animals around the world touched my heart and I would highly reccomend this book if you enjoy reading about animals.
