Information for Victims and the Workplace.......2006-01-05
This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
NOLO Press is noted for making legal information accessible to ordinary people. This topic is something that every supervisor and employer needs to be briefed on.
Good Resource.......2003-01-28
I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.
An Excellent Resource.......2001-07-08
As an employment attorney and human resource consultant who trains organizations on harassment policy, I use this book as a great reference material. I often suggest it to supervisors who want to know more about how to deal with this complex and difficult problem....
The Skinny on Sexual Harassment for Employers.......2000-11-28
Every business with employees that does not have a sexual harassment policy in place needs to buy this book now.
Actions the authors say employers need to implement regarding sexual harassment include: Do whatever it takes to understand the law, the issues, and keep current; put in place a zero tolerance sexual harassment prevention policy that prohibits specific behaviors of verbal harassment, non-verbal tactics, and physical harassment; take action to stop sexual harassment that does occur and prevent reoccurrence and reprisals.

This fascinating book is a valuable guide for farmers and the general public concerned about the overuse of nonnatural medicine, herbicides, and insecticides in farm management and animal husbandry. The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. She asserts that poor and inadequate natural habitat, unnatural feeding practices, and a reliance on medicine to fight individual symptoms of disease without addressing the whole animal have weakened farm animals' innate disease-fighting ability. Her argument for a return to reliance on the natural and away from the synthetic and artificial rearing and feeding methods of farm animals becomes more urgent and relevant given the outbreaks of "mad cow disease" and other ailments caused by these practices. This book, used in conjunction with proper consultation with a veterinarian, can help animal owners and farmers move back to natural and healthy farming practices. --Julia King
Book Description
The pioneer of herbal veterinary medicine has again thoroughly revised, updated and expanded her book on natural and organic cures and farming methods, first published in 1952 and now a classic in its field.

Indispensable book for natural/organic livestock raising.......2007-09-29
We raise our animals naturlaly/organically. We had been searching for a book that would help us with our animals in such a way medically, if needed. A friend of ours, who has been doing what we're doing for decades, highly recommended this book, telling us it would become our farm "bible". After reading just a few pages of this, we quickly realized what she meant, and we have been reading from it and using it ever since. It is very clearly written, easy to understand, and a joy to use. The author gives a wonderful history of herbal medicines in a farm/livestock setting. She clearly explains how to prepare the herbs (in tinctures, poultices, etc.) for the animals. She breaks it down for the different animals as well. This book is a joy to own-- we're very pleased with our purchase.
A must have for every farm.......2006-03-14
THis book is a great resource for anyone who wants to keep their animals healthy. Prevention is the best medicine, and this gives all the best prevention tips you could need. Your cattle, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and sheep dogs will thank you for purchasing this book.
This book has already paid for it'sself on my farm
If you own goats, own this book.......2003-07-31
I am a goat farmer for many years now. I have bought many books on goats, veterinary manuals, and so on, but this book is the first one I turn to for animal ailments. Natural rearing methods produce better and healthier kids than any other method. I bought one doe kid who was so ill with a disease that affected her brain that I was going to put her out of her misery--- it was too late for a vet to do any good. With the herbal treatments in this book, the goat recovered and lived over a year in good health.
Herbs are the best!.......2002-03-14
I have used this book for years and it has done wonders for my animals. It difinitely saved lives of animals the vet had given up on.The information is specific, with easy to understand instructions for preparation of herbs and what/when/why of their use.
Too much ranting.......2000-04-26
There may be some useful knowledge in here, but I was completely turned off by the author's...theories (she doesn't believe germs can cause disease, for example) and ranting against modern veterinary medicine and farming practices.

Book Description
Covers the current state of theoretical and experimental studies of oligomeric mixed systems from the physico-chemical standpoint and provides a technologist with the means for the quantitative approach to preparing liquid oligomeric compositions and choosing proper operating conditions for their processing into materials and articles. Recommendations are given on the practical use of found physico-patterns as well as the physico-chemical analysis of the effect of the composition ingredients on the final properties.
Book Description
Nonlinear ordinary differential equations was first published in 1977 and has since become a standard text in the teaching of the subject. It takes a qualitative approach, and is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of dynamical systems in mathematics or mathematics-related subjects. The text of this third edition has been completely revised to bring it into line with current teaching, including an expansion of the material on bifurcations and chaos. The book is directed towards practical applications of the theory, with several hundred examples and problems covering a wide variety of applications. Prerequisites are kept to a minimum, with appendices containing the necessary mathematical theory new to this edition. From reviews of the first edition: The book can profitably be used in a senior undergraduate course. It is well written, well motivated and contains some recent developments of interest which have not been readily accessible before at this level. V. Lakshmikantham in Mathematical Reviews From reviews of the second edition: The subject has wide applications in physical, biological, and social sciences which continuously supply new problems of practical and theoretical importance. The book does a good job in motivating the reader in such pursuits, and presents the subject in a simple but elegant style. P. K. Kythe in Applied Mechanics Reviews
Customer Reviews:
Not an instructive textbook.......2006-03-06
I am in an introductory graduate level math course using this textbook. I agree with the other reviewer who criticizes its lack of rigor, numerous typos, and overabundance of examples. The text is not well-written, so the authors wander among seemingly related topics within each chapter without giving much explanation of their background or intuitive insight into the physical phenomena they describe. Moreover, the examples have not been very instructive for me. They often leave out several steps (for example, many assume that you already have an analytic solution for a differential equation, thus I sometimes find myself needing to use Mathematica to derive one). The problems are loosely related to the examples, but there is enough of a disconnect between the two so that I have trouble doing the homework assignments. I find myself referring to other (more elementary) texts on differential equations for better insight into the problems.
I strongly discourage the use of this book and am looking forward to when the class ends.
very non-rigorous approach with a sizeable number of typos.......2006-02-24
(I am referring to the paperpack 3rd edition)
The text serves as an ok introduction to nonlinear ODEs. I would not recommend it for any kind of rigorous course, since the approach is very nonrigorous. There are no theorems, and no attempt at analysis, so you must take everything at the author's word. The book is mainly a large collection of examples. The difficulty of the problems depends on how rigorous you want the answers to be, and there are a lot of answers in the appendix (but without any comments about how they were derived).
Personally, the book irritates me, but I can see its usefulness. One of the main causes of irritation was the unusually high number of typos, at the rate of one per page in some chapters (and in the problems and their solutions too). I find this quite significant. This is the third edition, and there is no excuse for so many errors. I have never encountered a published book with this kind of error rate.
I do not have much experience with similar books, so I can't rate this text in context very well. It is similar to, say, Marion and Thornton's Classical Dynamics, except with less physics (of course) and more on difficult nonlinear ODEs, and with more typos.
Approachable introduction to nonlinear ODE's.......2000-04-07
Certainly worth the price. Very approachable. I haven't reviewed many similar books -- this text is good enough that I haven't felt the need.
Covers: solution, characterization, and stability analysis, including bifurcation and chaos.
The new 3rd edition is much better and significantly longer than the earlier editions.
Book Description
Many narrative accounts of men in combat during World War II have conveyed the horrors and emotions of warfare. However, not many reveal in such an intimate way the struggle of innocent youth to adapt to the primitive code of “kill or be killed,” to transform from lads into combat soldiers.
Another River, Another Town is the story of John P. Irwin, a teenage tank gunner whose idealistic desire to achieve heroism is shattered by the incredibly different view of life the world of combat demands. He comes to the realization that the realm of warfare has almost nothing in common with the civilian life from which he has come.
The interminable fighting, dirt, fatigue, and hunger make the war seem endless. In addition to the killing and destruction on the battlefield, Irwin and his crew are caught up in the unbelievable depravity they encounter at Nordhausen Camp, where slave laborers are compelled to work themselves to death manufacturing the infamous V-rockets that have been causing so much destruction in London, and that are expected one day to devastate Washington, D.C.
At the end of the war, the sense of victory is, for these men, overshadowed by the intense joy and relief they experience in knowing that the fighting is at last over.
Customer Reviews:
Brisk read with a lot of heart.......2005-10-02
Take one teenage soldier who later earns a PhD in philosophy. Place him in the midst of a conflict in its final days. Stir generously with passable writing ability.
What you get is Another River, Another Town : A Teenage Tank Gunner Comes of Age in Combat-1945.
This is something different in the way of soldiers telling their tale. Here's a guy who got into the war when it was practically over, during the final few months of the European campaign, all post-Bulge. And he's a tank gunner. Most books of this sort are from the perspective of the grunt, and usually from guys who saw more "action" (which is not to say the author did not - his life was in grave danger on a number of occasions).
With Another River, Another Towns we get some insight into the mind of a soldier and a good glimpse at the life of a tank gunner during the last days of World War II, when the European Theater saw more surrendering and looting than actual combat. This isn't a "becoming buddies in the foxhole" book ... but it did have some merits, primarily in that it looked at a period of the war usually glossed over fairly quickly. Once you get past the Africa campaign, Sicily, D-Day and the Bulge, the European conflict becomes much less "sexy" from the American perspective. This book fills in some of those gaps and shows us what the soldiers experienced during this late period in the way.
It was not a melodramatic or sepia-toned book, which is a positive, and offered a glimpse into an aspect of World War II not often explored - the mass surrendering at the tail end of the conflict, and how the Army often did not want to deal with prisoners of war because they only served to slow down the advance. German soldiers intent on surrendering were often turned away.
Nothing here is vital reading, even for the WWII buff - it's a pretty typical soldier's tale, told simply - but I really enjoyed this glimpse into the world of the tank gunner and would certainly recommend this for a good Saturday read on the war. It had a lot of heart.
Classic WWII Tanker Memoir.......2005-02-01
What a great book. Despite it's brevity, author John Irwin has penned one of the best WWII memoirs I have ever read. He's honest, humorous, and pulls no punches. He was only in combat for a brief period (March-April 1945). In this time, the Rhine had been crossed and the German forces were rapidly disintegrating. Still, it was no picnic as some WWII histories try to paint. There were always some Germans trying to destroy a tank with one of their vaunted Panzerfausts. Plus, one can say honestly that in combat, time takes on a different meaning. This book in a ideal read for World War II buffs of all ages. Enthusiastically recommended!
Great Short Read- Very Intence.......2004-10-22
I do not read a lot, but I have to admit that this was a well written, and very interesting book. For not finishing High School, John P. Irwin does a fantastic job telling his story. He leads you through his experiences and tries to let the reader know how horrible war really is. A story that everyone should know about!
Hard to beleive they were just kids!.......2004-01-09
I have to go with 5 stars too. This is a great first person account of the way it was. I found the book riviting and well written. A compelling, well written story of what it was like being a tanker in WWII. I thank and salute the author for having taken the time to get his story told, you will enjoy it start to finish.
France, Belgium, what's the difference?.......2004-01-03
The first sentence of chapter one indicates that the Battle of the Bulge was fought in France. This will be a great surprise to the many French-speaking residents of the Ardennes region of Belgium, a sovereign nation quite distinct from France. If you check a map, Bastogne, one of the main battle sites, is indeed in Belgium. I hope this major factual error was corrected in subsequent editions of this otherwise wonderful book.

"Medical research." When most of us hear those words, our imagination conjures up bored graduates with white jackets in a sterile porcelain laboratory, knowing no more about their subjects than ID number and blood type. This depersonalization of modern science is a myth, of course, but a powerful one that guides the way science is perceived and performed. This myth neglects or marginalizes the work of those men and women who take the human aspects of their research so seriously that they feel compelled to experiment on themselves. Who Goes First? tells their stories and thus gives us a view of medical research that diverges from the alienation of the nameless number heads.
Lawrence K. Altman has pursued research on the subject of medical self-experimentation since his days as a medical student, and this personal interest shines throughout the book. His writing is smart and enthusiastic, shedding light on a little-discussed aspect of research that raises important questions of ethics and scientific validity. Can a researcher be as objective about his or her own reactions to a drug as to a stranger's reactions? Should a scientist subject others to risks that he or she wouldn't take personally? What, if anything, do we have to gain from self-experimentation?
As you might imagine, this book is not for the squeamish. Even if you're not put off by the ocean of body fluids, you may find the terrors of curare-induced paralysis or life under quarantine a bit troubling. Still, for those willing or eager to confront such details, Who Goes First? provides an outstanding, highly readable introduction to the rehumanization of medical research. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Lawrence Altman has authored the only complete history of the controversial and understudied practice of self-experimentation. In telling the stories of pioneering researchers, Altman offers a history of many of the most important medical advancements in recent years as well as centuries past--from anesthesia to yellow fever to heart disease. With a new preface, he brings readers up to date and continues his discussion of the ethics and controversy that continue to surround a practice that benefits millions but is understood by few.
Customer Reviews:
A Magnificent Book.......2000-02-26
This is one of the few nonfictional books that I have ever read that I have literally had a hard time putting it down. Dr. Altman not only wrote a book of significant importance about the need for self-experimentation, and the history of it...but he wrote it so well that I wanted to know what and who did the next group of experiments. It also explained a lot of procedures I learned about in medical school, but sometimes without the knowledge of the history behind it complete understanding is impossible. The author also explains quite clearly why we can't use just animals in experimentation, and gives numerous illustrations of physicians and scientists who...surprise!...actually think about others compassionately and are able to put themselves in the shoes of the patients. After undergoing an experimental cochlear implant which failed (in its early days), this book makes it a lot easier for me to explain to others why I undertook such a risk and didn't sue when it failed and made me ill. The book also makes clear the need for both patient and doctor awareness of informed consent...for all patients, including those who are disabled or those who lack a complete education. Dr. Altman wrote a book that should definitely be required reading by all medical personnel in ethics classes. Karen L. Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu
A gripping book.......1999-07-19
This book discusses a taboo in medical research--self-experimentation. The self-experimenters ranged from the oddball to the dedicated, experiments ranged from shots in the dark to well planed out Gives a glimpse into the courage of these men and women. I highly recommend this unusual and thrilling book.
"Excellent".......1997-05-11
This is a wonderful book about a nearly wholly ignored aspect of medical research - - doctors who are the cutting edge of experimentation. Hopefully it will be in paperback soon

Book Description
This is the story of a Mongol warrior who lived during Jenghiz Khan's empire. It is a new look at a frequently misunderstood culture and history. The participants are not bound by ideals of what is good or bad. Like their ancestor the wolf, they do not act out of cruelty or mercy. They live by a natural law, which has been lost on modern society. To judge them in the midst of our politically correct, industrialized world is like trying to convince a caveman of the merits of having a personal computer. Jenghiz Khan was perhaps the most brilliant uneducated man in history. He was a master of human nature. The men who helped him create his empire, like He-Who-Goes-First, were making their lives from the "raw materials" of the times they lived in. The warrior in this story struggles with his spirituality and his role as a soldier.

Inspiring and heartwarming story.......2006-03-12
He Who Goes First is a very inspiring and heart felt story written by first time novelist Kevin J. Curtis. It takes you back into the time of 13th Century Mongolia with such vivid details that you are truly transported. The characters are rich and full of life and internal conflict, which makes for a great drama. I especially loved the story between the main character and his wife. Told from a very realistic perspective, this is a book you won't soon forget.
