Book Description
Utilizing original drawings and examples, this book refines technical jargon to help scientists understand and create the apparatus and mechanisms fundamental to their studies.
This best-selling book removes the mystery in building scientific apparatus. Every scientific apparatus requires a mechanical structure, even a device that is fundamentally electronic or optical in nature. A successful scientist must acquire many engineering skills in order to proceed efficiently with an experimental investigation. This volume provides a practical guide for working scientists who need to capitalize on new and unfamiliar technologies as they go about their work.
Customer Reviews:
Essential for Experimental Physics.......2007-06-24
This is THE book that you want if you are starting out as an experimental physicist.
It includes key information on optics, electronics, vacuum techniques, machining,...
The information in here is the "lore" that you often only learn after working in a
lab for many years; its not taught in school.
Every graduate student in experimental physics should get this book on their first
day in the lab. I don't know how to say it any stronger than that.
Top Notch!.......2006-11-10
I have a library of nearly 500 books on optics and this falls in the top 5. But this book not only covers optics (theoretical and practical, lens design to thin-film deposition), it also include topics such as vacuum physics (better than standard texts such as Harris), electronic design and mechanical design considerations.
Any inventor, systems engineer and instrument builder must have a copy of this book.
Excellent guide for practical physical scientists and technicians.......2006-11-02
I recently purchased the updated edition of this book, after having owned the previous edition for many years. It is concise, well-written, expertly illustrated and thoroughly referenced.
The book covers a number of areas, all of which I've had occasion to use in my career as a materials scientist and chemist. The book is aimed at the practical aspects of design, construction and use of apparatus, primarily what might be termed "physics apparatus", but the principles may be applied to many scientific fields. It provides sufficient theory and mathematics necessary for an understanding of the designs, as well as pointing out common pitfalls.
When I am designing and building equipment this book is never out of reach.
very useful.......2006-04-06
this is a great book to design and build instruments. It will give you a quick background on pretty much every thing you need to know for instrumentation. I'm a physicist by training, but I realized that when it comes to build stuff, there are many gaps in my 'tech' expertize. This book helps me fill those gaps.

All that and less.......2004-09-14
I agree with everyone else, if you are a grad student or new researcher you need to buy and read this book. BUT BEWARE: This book refers to turbo pumps as a new innovation, and ignores magnetic charged particle optics. Discussions of topics are fairly through but lack the depth of schematics, however many of the references are now considered seminal letters on their topics. The references alone will save you a lot of time.
The physics covered is accurate and usable, and the references, clear presentations of topics, and lists of suppliers make this book essential for any serious experimental scientist to be.
Buy it! :)
A Sometimes Handy Book.......2001-08-14
I would like to cast a somewhat dissenting view of this book. It is certainly a good place to start for information on various projects but comes up short on construction techniques. Perhaps an older source, Procedures in Experimental Physics (Lindsay Pubs), is better. Of course, it was written in 1938, so materials cited might be out of date, but the construction techniques aren't bad. I recently decided to build a good sized water tank (40" by 6" by 3") of acrylic and found nothing about construction tips. I was thinking of building something that probably required casting, and found a paltry two pages on the subject.
It would be good to see it updated every 5 years or so. I see the pub date is 1991. Things have changed a bit. It has a very good list of references, but with the advent of the web, it would be good to see some the reference material cite the web.
You cannot work in my lab unless you've read this!.......2001-08-10
This is a _great_ book! I buy a copy of this for every student who starts work for me--which I consider to be a fine investment. Practical, hands-on information is given on a huge variety of skills needed by those working in Physics labs. From glass blowing to vacuum systems, to instruction on attaching BNC connectors, it's all in here.
Awesome.......2001-07-19
Have never seen a book which was able to pack so much practical information into so few pages, and able to explain complex concepts so simply.
If you have to work with any type of laboratory equipment you would be insane to NOT have this book on your shelf.
Not just for researchers.......2000-06-14
This book is an invaluable reference source for anyone whose work requires them to become involved in unfamiliar (physical science related) technologies. Though it would certainly be useful to laboratory researchers, it is equally valuable for the scientist or engineer who needs to apply these disciplines. As a physicist involved in design of commercial instrumentation, I have often had to become involved in various disciplines which were outside of my area of formal training and this book has commonly been my point of entry into unfamiliar terrain. This isn't just a "how to do it" book, but also provides a solid grounding in the basic theory. Over the years I have used this book as a primer/refresher for: (a) vacuum technology; (b) light optics; (c) charged-particle optics; and (d) mechanical drawing. In each case, this book provided me with the fundamental concepts, equations, and techniques to become productive, often without access to any other source of expertise. Though I do, of course, employ other sources as my knowledge advances, I still find myself regularly referring back to this book.
I know of no other reference that manages to pack so much useful information into so few pages. And yet, it remains easy and enjoyable to read. Part of this may be due to the abundant drawings which have a certain charm of their own -- echoing the style of the famous C.S. Stong illustrations in the "Amateur Scientist" section of Scientific American.
This book is so good that I own two copies: one for my office at work and the second for reference at home.

Book Description
This is the last in a set of three books covering the practical aspects of receptor biochemistry, receptor-effector coupling, and neurotransmitter/hormone receptor-ligand interactions. It focuses on the preparation, performance and interpretation of receptor-ligand binding studies, which are
widely used in mainstream pharmacology, both in academic laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry. Binding studies are difficult to effectively perform, hence expert guidance and many practical tips are given throughout. The book contains a wealth of valuable protocols, and will be a useful
bench manual for researchers in pharmacology, neuroscience, molecular biology and biochemistry.

Book Description
Since the original publication of the bestselling Modelling Binary Data, a number of important methodological and computational developments have emerged, accompanied by the steady growth of statistical computing. Mixed models for binary data analysis and procedures that lead to an exact version of logistic regression form valuable additions to the statistician's toolbox, and author Dave Collett has fully updated his popular treatise to incorporate these important advances. Modelling Binary Data, Second Edition now provides an even more comprehensive and practical guide to statistical methods for analyzing binary data. Along with thorough revisions to the original material-now independent of any particular software package- it includes a new chapter introducing mixed models for binary data analysis and another on exact methods for modelling binary data. The author has also added material on modelling ordered categorical data and provides a summary of the leading software packages. All of the data sets used in the book are available for download from the Internet, and the appendices include additional data sets useful as exercises.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Binary Modeling Text.......2007-09-21
This text is perhaps one of the best for what it aims to do. There is so much here for the applied statistician / modeler that you can't help but pick up something new.
The treatment on graphical analysis of logistic regression residuals is extremely well done and very well presented. I have yet to find a better treatment that collects the constructed, added variable and partial residual plots (among other techniques) and ties them together in a single chapter.
Again, there is a -lot- of information here for practicing modelers to pour through. Definitely give this one a look, read the excerpts and judge for yourself. I have no regrets and love this book. My only regret is that I didn't get it sooner.
Check the library then buy it!.......2005-10-19
Dr. Collett draws together material on many aspects of analysis of binary data. But the author can't organize and express them in statistics language.
Excellent Intermediate Level.......2003-06-24
Probably the best in its class, Dr. Collet's work is among those books that contain a great deal of information and clarity. It deals with model building with binary data. A vey good explanation on the rationale behind maximum likelihood aproach to parameter estimation, it also shows the application of the asimptotic properties of the most commonnly used models for cross tabulated data.
I hold a Ph.D. in agronomy and plant breeding, and this volume certainly gave me a good start for analyzing binary responses. Lots of examples help in understanding the theory. A 5 stars without any doubt.
an excellent self-learning guide to modelling binary models.......1999-05-14
This is an excellent volume on how one should tackle binary data. Whether you have previous experience on this type of data or not, one can learn a lot on the subject with this book.
It was written in an easily understood way so that one can really follow the examples and have a real go at one's own data while consulting the book.
As a former student of Prof. Collett I recall how clear his presentation as well as lecture notes had always been on even the most complicated subject he taught. I treaure this volume very much.

Book Description
OVER THERE
When Raymond Gantter arrived in Normandy in the fall of 1944, bodies were still washing up from the invasion. Sobered by that sight, Gantter and his fellow infantrymen moved across northern France and Belgium, taking part in the historic and bloody Battle of the Bulge, before slowly penetrating into and across Germany, fighting all the way to the Czechoslovakian border.
With depth, clarity, and remarkable compassion, Gantter--an enlisted man and college graduate who spoke German--portrays the extraordinary life of the American soldier as he and his comrades lived it while helping to destroy Hitler's Third Reich. From dueling with unseen snipers in ruined villages to fierce battles in which the lightly armed American infantry skirmished against Hitler's panzers, Gantter skillfully captures one infantryman's progress across a continent where guns, fear, and death lay in wait around every bend in the road.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful History - man in nursing home.......2007-07-13
I was asked to purchase this book for a gentleman in our nursing home. He requested this book because he was the character in the book named Shorty and he was there in 1944 and knows the author.
He is thrilled to have this book.
Thank you.
A truly accurate account.......2007-07-07
I know the villages of Waimes and Faymonville very well as my mother's family came from that area. Gantter obviously took notice of what he saw and experienced there. He mentions people by name who actually existed and tells the readers exactly what these people did at the time. A well written and accurate account.
Real War.......2006-11-14
Mr. Gantter really brings out what the war was like in the European theater of operations. This is the best I have ever read. I highly
recommend it and it should be required reading in all US history classes
One of a Kind.......2006-07-19
Possibly the finest combat memoir ever written, "Roll Me Over" easily ranks alongside the works of veterans who went on to become professional writers, such as William Manchester's "Goodbye, Darkness", or David Kenyon Webster's "Parachute Infantry." Mr. Gantter's work has a remarkable day-by-day continuity to its narrative that is not found in other works, most memoirs are as confused and disjointed as only a battlefield can be. Sometimes an absolute gem awaits discovery in the bargain bin!
Best War Memoir Ever........2006-05-15
Roll Me Over: An Infantryman's World War II, is among the best and certainly among the most unusual combat memoirs to emerge from the Second World War. Its value lies in Gantter's unique and honest perspective; its peculiarity in his eclectic style.
Raymond Gantter's story is his own. He makes no claim to typicality and does not fit the profile of the average American soldier. When he was drafted he was thirty years old, married with two children, the college educated programming director of a radio station in Syracuse, New York. He was considered for officer training but passed over because of his eyeglasses. He writes as an educated, mature, and intellectually active man.
For the junior officer, the most important distinction of Gantter's experience is that he went into combat as a private and ended the war as a lieutenant. This is not to say that the book is a guide to early promotion. Instead it illustrates, better than could a book that only told one side of the story, some of the things that officers may forget about enlisted men, most importantly that they are men, no less than an officer and not particularly different, and how little enlisted often know about the demands placed on an officer from above. In recounting the self-inflicted wounding of a long-serving veteran as a result of battle fatigue, Gantter rails bitterly against his platoon leader for not knowing or caring enough about his condition to send him to the rear before he broke. He then reexamines the incident from a later perspective and concludes from his own hard experience as a platoon leader that the officer may very well have known and cared deeply about him but, due to a surplus of missions and a shortage of replacements, had no choice but to keep him in the line. He devotes his last chapter to a scathing discussion of the Army caste system as it operated in Europe during and immediately after the war, illustrating his points with outrageous and sometimes hilarious examples from his own experience.
Gantter discusses many subjects in the course of Roll Me Over, jumping from music to politics, religion, the Big Picture or whatever comes to mind in lengthy digressions that can at first be disorienting. Another quirk of his style is that, as the book is an amalgam of journal entries, letters home, narrative written after the war, and even a short story, he may at any given point write in the first, second (in all of his letters and many of his journal entries he seems to be addressing is wife), or third person. This is not from lack of skill; his writing is excellent. It seems instead to have been part of the mid-century fad for breaking the rules, like Gertrude Stein never using punctuation. Again, this can at first be disorienting but quickly becomes an enjoyable and engaging way of bringing the reader into Gantter's frame of mind at the time of writing (which, depending on the passage, may be at the front or in the rear, during or after the war). This engagement is important, as one of Gantter's favorite topics is the great physical discomfort and strain of combat. His accounts of days without sleep, dysentery, digging foxholes at night in the pouring rain, scavenging food, killing and being shot at are among the most vivid I have read.
