Customer Reviews:
Great review of elementary stats.......2005-12-15
I have recommended this book to college students who:
* have always had problems with math, and have to take a stats course.
* had stats years ago in high school or college, and now have to take another course with the elementary course as a prerequisite.
* want to be able to explain the concepts better to others.
* took a class, but are not sure what they really know.
Rowntree, in addition to explaining the basics, has short assignments that he asks the reader to complete before proceeding on in the chapter (use a 3x5 card to cover the answer while figuring out the problem). It is a nice and effective technique for this book.
Effective, helpful, inexpensive (there are plenty of copies around for under $10), in many libraries, and readable. Try it!
The easiest way to learn statistics.......2005-08-18
This book helps to understand relevant statistics concepts in an easy way. The book is written in a direct way, and let you progress step by step learning additional concepts without stress. Also the questions that are made within each chapter let you realize if you have really understand the previous ideas and if you should go into the next paragraphs or chapters.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be introduced into statistics.

Small and Expensive? - Maybe Not........2003-08-08
This book is true to its title. It IS a primer for non-mathematicians. It teaches extremely useful concepts in a concise and simple way with as little math as possible. A small and easy to read book - you will want to take it with you and read it on the bus, plane, subway, etc.
The only drawback is the price - however, it may be not so expensive if it saves you several hours that would be otherwise spent trying to read other, less readable, books. How much is your time worth to you?
A great leap in understanding statistics but at a price.......2002-10-15
I just read this book, although I originally purchased the it a number of years ago. I'm afraid my "math anxiety" kept me from reading it although my desire to conquer this stuff remained. Finally, working on a PhD I was again faced with quantitative methods which set me to the task again.
Reading this text non-stop was relatively painless and exceedingly enlightening. Rowntree at least 95% of the material very clear and understandable and avoided too many side trips to the theoretical. Suddenly, the information I was confronted with in class began to make sense given his "down-to-earth" explanations. However, he doesn't stray far from the theoretical and mathematical roots of the science of probability.
He takes the reader from the point of understanding we all do statistical analysis informally regardless of any coursework. From there, he proceeds through the fundamentals until reaching the essence of correlation and regression.
My first of two critiques would be that he leaves out some basic symbols in favor of simplicity. Yet these symbols could easily have remained in. This would have aided the transition from understanding to classroom work. Second, the price for the volume is extraordinary. The price is a clear disincentive. Although the knowledge is easily worth [more money], I'm afraid this reduces the number of readers for an extremely valuable primer.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide comprehensive treatment of the use of the symmetric group in quantum chemical structures of atoms, molecules, and solids. It begins with the conventional Slater determinant approach and proceeds to the basics of the symmetric group and the construction of spin eigenfunctions. The heart of the book is in the chapter dealing with spin-free quantum chemistry showing the great interpretation value of this method. The last three chapters include the unitary group approach, the symmetric group approach, and the spin-coupled valence bond method. An extensive bibliography concludes the book.
Customer Reviews:
Only for the mathematically minded theoreticians.......1999-08-02
Although it probably provides an excellent theoretical preparation, the average quantum chemists with only simple HF and CI knowledge will find it very difficult to digest, as it is not easy to see the relevance between the theory outlined and actual application in the molecualr orbital theory.
It would have helped the readers greatly if the author could spare a little more consideration on the layout and contents so that those whose preparation does not go much beyond Szabo could also appraciate the theoretical significance therein.

Book Description
THEY FLEW LOW, SLOW, AND INTO THE FACE OF ENEMY FIRE....In Vietnam, an elite group of air force pilots fought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planes-flying as low as they could get. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemy positions, the forward air controller made an art form out of an air strike-knowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life and death decisions as a battle unfolded. For Tom Yarborough, the risk was constant, intense, electrifying. A member of the super secret Prairie Fire unit, Yarborough became one of the most frequently shot-up pilots flying out of Da Nang-engaging in a series of dangerous secret missions in Laos. This is Yarborough's adrenaline-pumping chronicle of heroism, danger, and brotherhood in Vietnam. From the rescuing of downed pilots to taking out enemy positions, to the most harrowing day-long missions, here is the dedication, courage, and skill of the fliers who took the war into the enemy's backyard.... AUTHORBIO: TOM YARBOROUGH served in the Air Force for thirty years in a variety of flying and staff assignments. A command pilot, he logged 5,000 hours of flying time, with over 1,500 of them in combat. During his two Vietnam tours as a forward air controller, he earned thirty combat decorations, including the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Now a business executive, he lives in West Springfield, Virginia, where he maintains ties to the academic community as an adjunct history professor at Northern Virginia Community College.
Customer Reviews:
A surprisingly great book.......2007-09-24
Really great read, a real page turner, funny. About a newby covey pilot who turns into the old man. His crew chief cringes every time he takes off because he brings back more ruined planes than anyone. One of the best FAC books out there.
Outstanding .......2007-05-04
A rare combination a true warrior, who survived some of the most dangerous flying of the Vietnam War and a highly literate author. One wonders where our nation finds the quiet Paladins of the 20'Th century.
At one level a warrior's story of near hand to hand combat from the air with a fully committed enemy. The evolution of the author's transition from a member of the Air Force to his very close identification with the Special Forces who operated under his wing adds to the story. Live at the Muff Divers Club also brings color to the tale. As a war story it has the same ring of aggressive sacrifice of other great warriors.
As a psychological study it is a great story of the magnetism / repulsion of war and the warrior culture.
Finally, it is a story of flying on the very edge. As a pilot what is so stunning is the difficulty of the conditions under which they operated. Operating under ceilings a fraction of that required for civilian pilots while performing a difficult mission and finally trying to stay alive stretches the reader's ability to understand. Most non pilots will take for granted the brief description of descending into cloud covered valleys, far from navigation facilities as another day at the office. Far from it, some of the most dangerous and challenging things a pilot can be called upon to do. But that's just for starters; those of us in civilian life almost always have the ability to climb back though the clouds to sunshine when we are overloaded. However, it must be a totally different experience to be flying against a dedicated enemy while trapped under the overcast. The equivalent of fighting on the edge of a cliff.
.The reader is fortunate that the author brings a great story and the skill to tell the story. Even more of a gift is that the author lived to tell the story of those who did not return.
Great job of telling the true story!.......2007-03-22
Tom has done an outstanding job of telling the tales of FAC work in Vietnam and the secret war in Laos. This book is a must read for anybody with a sense of patriotism and who is a pilot and really cares abot "getting the job done". Excellent book and story.
Thanks Tom
Another American Hero.......2007-03-15
Tom Yarborough (TY)has written an exelent book about his time as a FAC with the 20 TASS in Da Nang during the vienam war.
It is well written, very exiting and I had a hard time putting it down, the author dos a great job putting the reader in the backseat and you can almost taste the adrenelin and smell the sweat.
Go buy this book, you cannot miss out

Da Nang Diary.......2007-01-10
This book has personal significance for me. My sweetheart flew with this group and knows the author, so we will read it together and re-live history with a very intensely personal appreciation of this well-written, engaging book. I initially looked at a few sections and passages and found it interesting, engaging and not the least bit dry or boring as some historical stories can be. Amazed and thrilled that the author has captured such an important part of our mutual history that touched so many American families. BRAVO!

How Doctors Think
ASIN: 0684818760 |
Book Description
A promising young doctor, whose first book about becoming a pediatrician was hailed by Kirkus Reviews as "making the future of medicine seem brighter," now brings us into the lives of children and parents whom we all too readily reduce to statistics, to headlines, and to the purview of dispassionate bureaucracies.
Soon after Claire McCarthy chose to practice medicine in one of Boston's inner-city health clinics, she realized that she might as well have moved to another countryfor the world within the Martha Eliot Health Center was unlike anything she had ever experienced.
Written with the authenticity that only a doctor in the field could evoke, Everyone's Children introduces us to youngsters who, despite their poverty, are full of faith, hope, and potential. Through Dr. McCarthy's eyes, we meet young men and women struggling to overcome drug abuse. We cry along with a sobbing child who clings to the foster mother she has known only two short days. We meet the young mother of a seriously ill child, whose life is complicated by an abusive boyfriend. And we are amazed and uplifted by families who thrive simply because they consider themselves luckynot poor.
Writing with unaffected grace and wisdom, this young doctor shows us how all of our livesprivileged and poorare an unnerving mix of the predictable and the utterly unexpected. Everyone's Children sets forth no prescriptions or policies. Instead, it paints a portrait of children who are, in fact, everyone's children because they are everyone's future.
Customer Reviews:
Superior Account of a Doctor's Pediatric Career.......2003-04-23
This book, Everyones Children, is very deep. Dr. Claire McCarthy is a breathtaking pediatrician, who tells about her patients troubles and her life. Not only does McCarthy describe her medical career, she also describes how she helps teh families psychologically, and her home life. McCarthy's way of describing her patients' problems isn't often optimistic in the begining, but sometimes her view changes. Her descriptions of her patients, home life, and family are very intense and details are given. The book is written skillfully, catching the readers attention immediately, from the very first sentence. This is a wonderful book to read if you like medical/psychological child-care, or if you are interested in reading about working with children in a poor area.
A pediatrician describes working with low-income families........1999-03-13
Dr. Claire McCarthy has elevated the struggles of her busy workday into an interesting and realistic account of medical practice in a poor Boston neighborhood. She describes her routine work at Martha Eliot Health Center without dramatizing her patients or the mundane aspects of care. Her descriptions of families are sensitive and clear. Her description of her own attempts to have meaningful medical relationships in the context of poverty, disease, violence and drug addiction is careful and honest. This book portrays urban social problems from the perspective of one person working to make a difference; we should all have such meaningful vocation.
Wonderful, sensible, interesting - a terrific book!.......1998-07-08
This is a wonderful book about Dr. McCarthy's experiences as a pediatrician in a clinic. She writes beautifully about the patients, current welfare problems and she gives suggestions about what we - as readers, parents, etc. - can do to make things better. McCarthy writes a great column in Sesame Street Parents Guide.
