Top Notch.......2007-05-19

I had the pleasure of doing media relations for Continental in the early 2000s, including the years after 9/11. The Gordon Bethune in the book is the Gordon Bethune you meet in person: incredibly smart, driven, concerned about the people whose paychecks he signed, and satisfied with nothing less than the best. Great read. (I sound like a PR guy... But I mean it sincerely...)

Remarkable Turnaround.......2007-01-22

This is an enlightening book on how CEO Gordon Bethune, together with his team, engineered a remarkable turnaround of Continental Airlines in the mid-1990s and then steered Continental to be a very successful airline. With literary assistance from journalist Scott Huler, Continental Airlines Bethune describes how he transformed the near-bankrupt airline into one of the best companies in the industry. He outlined his four-part "Go Forward" plan for turning Continental airlines around, and offers critical advice to all business professionals. He uses numerous examples, as well as stories and anecdotes; to make his simple, yet profound points.T he challenges faced by Continental Airlines in 1994 are somewhat similar to those faced by many airlines worldwide in the past six years or so, when the industry was going through a rough patch. Many of these airlines need visionary and decisive leadership of Bethune's mould to turn the familiar red ink at the bottom line to black.

The book is well written in an easy to follow and understand manner which enables it to benefit anyone in any industry to gain insights into how to turnaround a loss making business with dysfunctional structures and demotivated people. I learnt a lot from the various examples provided which helped me to get his message across. I also enjoyed the various humorous stories which illustrates how badly Continental used to be mismanaged and how the situation was straightened out.

Although there was a fair amount of repetition which may annoy some people, I had no problem with it as it helped to reinforce the author's message. This book is absolutely invaluable for any manager or leader in any organization undergoing a turnaround process, regardless of size.

light on the details but interesting.......2006-12-18

Continental airlines was a major disaster in 1994. Gordon Bethune did a major turnaround of that company and unfortunately he does not tell us how he did it with the exception of cutting costs. He was so busy talking about how wonderful he was that he forgot to tell us how to turn the company around and not just the end results. It is still an interesting book for those who are interested in the airline industry but don't expect to get much out of it if you are looking for the story of continentals turnaround.

Great read for business people.......2005-12-16

I have been a loyal frequent flyer at Continental since the late 90's, and I have no idea the airlines was that terrible at the early 90's. As a frequent flyer, I admire Continental's plane is always cleaner than other airlines, and the flight attendant attitude is always friendly than others. After reading the book, I understand the reasons.
If you work at a company need to be turned around, this book is almost a top read. For management, there are some good ideas worth considering from reading this book.
This book can be condensed to 2/3. The last one third of the book is somewhat repeating what has been said at the beginning. Otherwise I will give it a 5 stars rating.

Great book, Even for Non-Aviation hobbiest~.......2005-12-12

This is a great book on how Continental emerged from bankruptcy twice. Bethunes punes run throughout the book which make for easy and enjoyable reading. Even for a college student such as myself.

A must for experts, a waste for newbies.......2003-11-12

This book contains very useful data of astronomical objects, which of course must be known by any expert in this field. But if a newbie try to buy and collect this book, soon he/she will find it a waste, because he/she should buy the new edition in the next year if he/she really feel have to own it :(

Great intutive introduction to stochastic calculus.......2006-06-17

This book was such a relief after going through tens of books/lectures notes on stochastic calculus. Most math books give the theory behind Ito calculus (martingales, measure theory etc.), but fail to give the motivation and reasoning behind abstract definitions. This book does an excellent job in deriving many seemingly-complicated math formulas (or, theorems) using intuitive terms. It is an excellent read for people who have a reasonable background in probability theory, and are wishing to learn stochastic calculus (plus finance). I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the rudiments of Ito integral and see its applications in finance.

Great introduction to the Value at Risk measures.......2005-10-14

Got the friendly yellow paperback version. The book is in three major parts; Options, Time series and then Value at Risk.

The first section starts out well with an overview of Stochastic Processes and then moves on to Stochastic Integrals and Differential Equations. All of this is motivation to help with the pricing of Options, starting with European, then American and moving onto Exotics and Bond Options. It covers all the major points, though it is a little limited in the Exotics, it does have a good references to more thorough works.

The second section on time series works with ARIMA, ARCH and GARCH models.

The third section (labeled Selected Financial Applications) is mostly about the VAR though is has some really good commentary on the Volatility of Option Portfolios.

An added bonus is that you can download the PDF version of the book, and all the data for the examples from the web, with quite a neat one-time license.

I would recommend this book to people needing a good overview of the subjects listed above, and as a handy reference.

This is a wonderful piece of writing. It is is written in clear and sparkling prose, testimony to the way in which Ms. Kozhina carries on the great Russian literary tradition of such writers as Gorky, Chekov, and Turgenev. The book, in its simplicity, yet power, reminds me of that great French movie, "Forbidden Games", about children orphaned during World War II. Time after time, as I read through the book, I would stop and look at the picture of the author; in a way I was unable to believe that one could go through such terrible times as she describes, and yet still survive with such great depths of humanity. This is literature at its very best!

Elena Kozhina's Through the Burning Steppe: A Wartime Memoir is so much more than a highly compelling narrative of the horrors and heroism experienced by a young Russian girl and her mother during World War II. It is also a revealing glimpse into the realities of life in the Soviet Union, not just during the war, but from its earliest years to its final decade. It is a chronicle of a young person's growing literary, artistic and cultural awareness. And it is, ultimately, a timeless story - not simply of good and evil, or of simple joys amid enormous tragedy, but also of human frailties and strengths, of ruthlessness and compassion, of islands of clarity in a sea of complexity. The Brandeis-Frankfurter correspondence.......2006-06-06

This is sixth collection of Justice Brandeis' letters edited by Urofsky and Levy. This long collection, with 634 letters, covers some 630 or so pages. It contains only the Brandeis side of the correspondence; as the authors explain in their helpful introduction, they suspect FF destroyed his correspondence with LDB sometime in the early 1940's after the Justice's death. The book is particularly useful given the rather sensational twist given to their relationship in Murphy's "The Brandeis/Frankfurther Connection." Much as in their other volumes, helpful annotations abound, which explain terms and events, and add to the context of the letters. There is also a thorough index. The topics covered (from roughtly 1912 until August, 1941) demonstrate LDB's vast area of interests and expertise and his contacts with the notables of the day: Harvard Law School; Zionism; Croly; Laski; The New Republic; the "futility" of the Sherman Act; Roscoe Pound; Sacco-Vanzetti;Taft; Wilson; FDR; Cardozo, and Charles Beard. Issues of Supreme Court jurisdictional reform, intra-court politics, some key decisions (e.g. Whitney, New State Ice, Erie RR, etc.), and personality profiles of various Justices all add to the richness of the correspondence. To top things off, most of the correspondence simply is interesting and affords the reader with an unique insight into LDB's thinking and activities.
