I didn't like it, but you might.......2003-01-16

It wasn't what I thought it would be. I took a class last summer and this was the book we used. If you are a technical type of person, you might understand it, or even a business person. The first half of the book talks about how you need a proposal and how to write one, why web training is ideal for business, etc. The last half is about how to set up a training website.

The book uses a lot of case studies, which seems like a good idea, but the book uses too many, and not enough concrete examples.

Too much common sense, not enough innovation........2000-06-13

I don't really know why this is called a cookbook, it isn't set up like that at all. While it does have some interesting features, I think it's a little outdated and really should be revised to discuss some of the newer technologies available to trainers. This, and because it covers a lot of the very basics, might be why it seems to be filled with too much common sense and not enough truly innovative ideas. I've seen Brandon Hall speak at training shows, and he's obviously a leader in the industry. I just didn't think this book was worth (the money). I'd say only about a quarter of the book is useful. To top it off, the CD-ROM is a waste. I wouldn't recommend this book to trainers or instructional designers with any amount of real-world experience.

Not a cookbook.......1999-12-23

If you have much experience developing CBTs or multimedia projects, this isn't the resource for you. It's better for aspiring managers or managers of training depts. It's a good book to read if you want to know a whole lot ABOUT the field of WBT. The CD-ROM is not a model of good design. It provides a list of URLs but does not categorize the list. Unless you're very familiar with the training world, you don't know which are links to resources (most aren't) and which aren't. The NASA link takes you to a login page for NASA employees and contractors (I assume most of us are not either of these). All in all, I regret buying the book. It does have useful information and interesting asides, but I did not use it in developing my department or WBT strategy.

An easy read and well-organized........1999-11-20

Excellent book. It was an easy read because it was well-organized. Apparently the author knows a thing or two about good instruction.

I got a good overview and some new insights into WBT development. The book is probably most valuable to training executives and managers than to courseware designers and developers.

There were lots of valuable project walkthroughs, which conveyed a good feel for all aspects of the process of creating web-based training programs. It includes good discussions of project management and how to create proposals to motivate the projects in the first place. I can see where Hall's focus on return on investment and how each affected worker in the project may react positively or negatively to aspects of WBT.

The book has the best and most concrete explanation of storyboarding that I have seen.

The technical stuff was pretty good, despite the fact that the book is old (mid-1997) and tools, plug-ins, and development environments have changed a lot since those ancient times. For instance, by "browser" he really means Netscape, which in the spring of 1997 had an 87% market share and represented hot technology. Now, we have the advantage of not only of a more advanced browser, but also more advanced international standards in browser authoring, such as Dynamic HTML and Cascading Style Sheets.

The book was great for an introductory and great on ideas. It was in no way a cookbook though.

As a floral designer myself, I have been searching for a visual guide to fresh cut flowers for years. This book not only features cut flowers, but has a section on foliage as well. The expected life spans and common names are provided. This book is the encyclopedia of flowers that I have been looking for!

Love Love Love It!.......2007-06-27

I'm 21 and I run my own flower shop. I know my way around a design bench, but unfortunately my inexperience has left me with a limited knowledge of cut flowers and foliages. This book has helped me so much! And the CD Rom is amazing. You can search for flowers by species, family, even color and distinguishing characteristics! Definately two thumbs waaay up!

Not what I expected............2007-03-07

I bought this book thinking it was another book. I was going to return it, but it does serve its purpose at the moment. I wish the photographs were larger. I thought a bit pricey for what it was and the cd rom is not Mac compatable, so I have no use for it!

CD included, and its good!.......2006-11-16

Overall, this is a good buy, and as others have noted, a great staple for the floral designer. I love the disk - you can run a search for "pink flowers," for example, and all flowers with pink variations fed back to you in list form -- you are then able click on the list for pictures of each flower. I wasn't sure if the CD would be included (although it is mentioned on the cover of the book in the picture shown, it is not referred to in the product description) and was pleased to see it is indeed part of the package. I only wish they showed all the color varieties for each genus--instead, there is just one picture and the color variations are listed. With roses, for example, it would be nice to see the many popular types used in common arrangements --vendelas, cool water, versalia....

Great Reference Book.......2002-07-14

I just got this book today and I am so happy that I purchased it. It is the perfect reference book that i have been looking for. It has great pictures of the flowers and foliage , pronunciation as well as design applications. Great book, a must have to all beginner florist.

A Must Read!.......2004-01-04

This is a great story for people who enjoy a look into our past, but are often put to sleep by normal history books. By focusing on the virtues of Joshua Chamberlain, the Author took me on a ride through the civil war like never before. Not only do I have a better understanding of the war and the time period in general, but Oliver did a wonderful job of reminding me what a hero really is. This book is a quick read and admittedly the first history book of its type that I couldn't put down. The author did a great job of mixing history with the personal struggles of one of our nations finest men. Oliver puts a human face on the war many of us have forgotten. A must read for anyone!

I was given this book as a gift, and although civil war history wasn't a topic I had a serious interest in, the story captured my attention right away. The author made the character very appealing and really brought him to life, including stories of his personal life and relationships with his wife, parents and children. It was a memorable book, and a good depiction of the hardships of the Civil War. The book brought tears to my eyes several times - he was really able to bring out the heart of the character. I'd recommend this to those with an avid interest in the war, as well as to those who love history as a novel instead of a textbook! I bought extra copies to pass along as gifts this season.

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Read!.......2003-12-14

I had read much about the Civil War and much about Joshua Chamberlain. I though I knew the man and his life but Thomas Oliver taught me a lesson or two. Within his clear and precise prose he has brought a book which is a very pleasant experience. Oliver's style lends itself to "just turn another page" and before you know it you're far into it and unwilling to put it down. I read it in one evening. Chamberlain's life is a true American story: The sheltered professor who became a soldier and ultimately a hero at Gettysburg. A Medal of Honor winner, promoted to general and selected by Grant to accept the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The book is full of wonderful details, both historical and personal, and is guaranteed to keep your interest. I learned, for instance, that Chamberlain's medal was awarded decades after the fact and was actually mailed to him. Thanks, Mr. Oliver, for a fine historical effort and bring us more!

I enjoyed the book very much. It was easy reading and kept my interest. I found it hard to put the book down. If you like reading about the civil war you will find this book a must.

If you love American history but like hearing it or reading about it from a story teller and not a stuffy old professor, this is for you. I've taken up to a month to finish your typical long-winded popular American Hero biographies before and when I finally closed those books, I could appreciate the main character's endeavors but I've never literally sat in a chair afterward with a lump in my throat. This book gathers momentum quickly and because it's only a few hundred pages, it's simply almost impossible to put down. I challenge you to read this book and not want to run out and shake every American war veteran's hand.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while because I passed it over for other newer books... How sorry I am I waited this long! This book is so good... the stories about the different dogs are heartwarming, and heartwrenching...they are filled with almost any dog immaginable and are a delight to read especially for dog lovers. I can't recommend this book enough...

50 Warm And Comforting. Hug Your Dog!.......2006-08-13

Do you have a passion for animals? If so, you'll inhale this book. The authors heartfelt emotions can be felt on every page. He clearly adored the animals he cared for over the decades. He described the colorful European countryside, the diverse pets, and the people who owned them in fine detail. Each story is accompanied by an ink sketch that added some warm visuals. My favorite stories were of "Tricki Woo", "Judy The Nurse Dog", "Granville Bennett", and "Cigar." What was nice is that since the stories were broken up, you could not lose your place when you took a break. Yet, I only took one because this was a fast page turner. I have had several dogs in my life and these are the most honest depictions of dog behavior I have read thus far. All animal lovers will enjoy this. Time to hug my dog and adopt another.
