Book Description

Liquid crystals, polymers and polymer liquid crystals are soft condensed matter systems of major technological and scientific interest. An understanding of the macroscopic properties of these complex systems and of their many and interesting peculiarities at the molecular level can nowadays only be attained using computer simulations and statistical mechanical theories. Both in the Liquid Crystal and Polymer fields a considerable amount of simulation work has been done in the last few years with various classes of models at different special resolutions, ranging from atomistic to molecular and coarse-grained lattice models. Each of the two fields has developed its own set of tools and specialized procedures and the book aims to provide a state of the art review of the computer simulation studies of polymers and liquid crystals. This is of great importance in view of a potential cross-fertilization between these connected areas which is particularly apparent for a number of experimental systems like, e.g. polymer liquid crystals and anisotropic gels where the different fields necessarily merge. An effort has been made to assess the possibilities of a coherent description of the themes that have developed independently, and to compare and extend the theoretical and computational techniques put forward in the different areas.

Solitons: An Introduction discusses the theory of solitons and its diverse applications to nonlinear systems that arise in the physical sciences. Drazin and Johnson explain the generation and properties of solitons, introducing the mathematical technique known as the Inverse Scattering Tranform. Their aim is to present the essence of inverse scattering clearly, rather than rigorously or completely. Thus, the prerequisites are merely what is found in standard courses on mathematical physics and more advanced material is explained in the text with useful references to further reading given at the end of each chapter. Worked examples are frequently used to help the reader follow the various ideas and the exercises at the end of each chapter not only contain applications but also test understanding. Answers, or hints to their solution, are given at the end of the book. Sections and exercises that contain more difficult material are indicated by asterisks.

Many badly printed pages.......2002-07-02

I am still in the process of learning solitons from this book, hence it is not very easy for me to offer an opinion of the merits of the book. But I assume that there is a whole batch of copies out there with awful printing quality between pages 117 and 147. The ink from the one side of each page has penetrated almost all the way to the other side making the reading very tedious. I returned my first copy, only to have it replaced with one having exactly the same problem

Introduction to non-Kerr Law Optical Solitons is the first book devoted exclusively to optical soliton propagation in media that possesses non-Kerr law nonlinearities. After an introduction to the basic features of fiber-optic communications, the book outlines the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), conserved quantities, and adiabatic dynamics of soliton parameters. It then derives the NLSE for Kerr law nonlinearity from basic principles, the inverse scattering transform, and the 1-soliton solution. The book also explains the variational principle and Lie transform. In each case of non-Kerr law solitons, the authors develop soliton dynamics, evaluated integrals of motion, and adiabatic dynamics of soliton parameters based on multiple-scale perturbation theory. The book explores intra-channel collision of optical solitons in both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian type perturbations. In addition, it examines the stochastic perturbation of optical solitons, the corresponding Langevin equations, and optical couplers, followed by an introduction to optical bullets. This book offers an elementary and unified introduction to the non-perturbative results obtained in relativistic quantum field theory based on classical soliton and instanton solutions. Such solutions are derived for a variety of models and classified by topological indices. The methods are then developed for quantizing solitons to obtain quantum particles. Vacuum tunneling, &ugr;-vacua and the dilute-instanton-gas approximation are described in detail. Other instanton effects related to quark-quark forces, confinement, the U(1) problem and Borel summability are also discussed. The emphasis is on presenting the basic ideas in a simple pedagogical way. Technical tools like functional methods, Grassman integrals, homotopy classification, collective co-ordinates etc. are developed ab initio.

The presentation of this work is kept at a fairly simple level and ideas are developed through illustrative examples. Techniques not covered in older field theory textbooks, such as functional integral methods, are presented in some detail to the necessary extent. These techniques are important in their own right. Although the book is mainly addressed to particle physicists and quantum field theorists, several portions will be of relevance to other branches of physics, particularly statistical mechanics. These include three chapters devoted to deriving classical soliton and instanton solutions and one on collective co-ordinates, as well as sections devoted to general techniques.
