A Landmark Book.......2005-11-20

This is one of my favorite books. I am a writer and happened to stumble onto this amazing book while researching Velikovsky, the current failed comet model, earth changes and much more. Aveni produced this fine scholarly work on the central american archaeological sites. I was blown away when I realized from this source that the grid axes of nearly all of the ancient meso american sites are skewed to the east. Aveni didn't grok on the reason but his reliable data is invaluable. And the reason? The ruins are much much older than the so called experts claim -- and date to before the last crustal shift which probably occurred at the close of the last ice age -- around 9500 BC. Thereabouts. The ruins, in other words, were once oriented N-S just like the pyramids of Giza today -- but when the crust moved so did the temples.

Aveni's analysis of the Berlin Codex is also a treasure. Amazingly, the Codex includes an authentic Mayan ephemeris of Venus -- and it is telling. Aveni is puzzled by it -- and wonders how these Mayans (whose calendar was accurate to how many decimal points -- and yet they) couldn't manage to record the stations of Venus accurately. Aveni doesn't get it -- but his translation and analysis is nonetheless a tremendous contribution. Of course the Mayans did record the stations accurately. They recorded what they saw: namely, a planet (Venus) that was in an extremely elliptical orbit. (Venus today has an almost perfectly circular orbit.) Velikovsky was right. Venus was then a comet in the process of being captured by the sun. And this confirmatory evidence - which Velikovsky did not know about -- has been lying around since 1980 when this book was published -- and no one (except for me) has even noticed.

Aveni's scholarship is second to none. The book is a gem.

Skywatchers of Ancient Mexico.......1999-12-11

Great book for Astronomy history buffs. The Mayans were some of the great astronomers of the past and this book details the methods and briefs. While the book leans to the textbook side, thus the 4 rating rather than a 5 star, it is very readable. I liked the decoding of the Mayan Gliffs. The book shows numerous gliffs and provides written intreputations. A Mayan astronomer, for example, is shown sitting with his eye reaching out and grasping a star. The book also details the Mayan calendar and how they determined rather precisely the orbital period of Venus and other heavenly bodies.

The book is great for anyone wanting a better understanding of anicent astronomical methods and a further understanding of the Mayan people.

What a joy to read this book!!!! So much history and excitement. John Tom Sisemore is my great-grandfather. I remember reading newspaper clippings about the murder but was never provided this much information of the incident and the events leading up to it. Mr. Harris has done an outstanding job of honoring the life and death of a wonderful lawman. One of the best books I have read in a while.

A Legend Remembered.......2000-02-20

This is a very good biography of a man that history had nearly forgotten. A historical review of the a lawman that "cleaned up the town" during the prohibition period, was feared by criminals throughout the region of Northern Louisiana and died in the line of duty...a murder which remains unsolved to this day!

If you like reading about tough, no non-sense lawmen of the west or historical accounts of Texas Rangers, you will really enjoy this book. This man had character, integrity, and a single-minded focus on upholding the law. He usually worked alone, most times outnumbered and rarely was outwitted by his adversaries.

This should be a required reading for students in Louisiana schools...they should revere and remember the heroes that help build their state.

Great lawman-outlaw story.......1999-12-28

I've read about many Old West-type lawmen, and John Sisemore is definitely one of the most interesting...his zeal for the job was unparalleled. Many of his arrests were recorded in local newspapers, so we know he spent a great deal of time chasing moonshiners...a typical assignment for U.S. marshals at that time. But few did it so doggedly and with such success. I particularly liked how the author weaved family members and townspeople into the story and showed how a community fought for law & order and how the results of that battle shaped the entire community for generations.

"Rediscovered" story worth reading.......1999-12-10

I had never heard of Deputy John Sisemore, having read everything available on U.S. Marshals. This account of his adventures beats anything John Wayne's "Rooster Cogburn" did. Sometimes the truth is wilder than fiction. The book is written with as a "non-fiction novel" to bring the story alive, with conversations and events carefully crafted from court transcripts and newspaper articles. Even though the book reads as a novel, the author gives extensive notes on his sources at the end of the book. If you love the Old West or enjoy classic stories of good versus evil, this book is a must read.
