Forget the 98 in the title, this is the Bible for Quicken........1999-02-01
As a technical support representative for Intuit for the last two years, I supported Quicken 5 through Quicken 99. Quicken 5 was the last program to have a manual with the program. From Quicken 6 on to the current version, the manual has been incorporated in the now extensive Help Menu.
Customers were always asking me if I knew of a good reference book for Quicken. As one customer told me, "I like to take my software manuals to bed to read. Have you ever tried taking your laptop to bed to read?"
Since I left Intuit to privately consult users of Quicken and TurboTax, I have been looking for a few good reference books to recommend to my clients.
Quicken 98 Bible is a quick reference with it's comprehensive table of contents, good index, a highlighted chapter title on the left page, a highlighted subchapter title on the right page, with various tips, notes, cross-references and cautions.
I was glad to see the Caution icon in Chapter 13,Managing Files. Some new and older users of Quicken fail to understand the need to backup to another source other than the harddrive.
My only complaint is that the caution is not direct enough. I would have put a Warning icon and something as direct as " If you do not backup to another source, such as a floppy disk, you will loose all of your transactions you have entered. In other words, your year's worth of data will be gone if and when your harddrive needs to be reformated."
Other than the mild-mannered Caution icons, I would recommend this book for those who need a quick reference at their desk or for those who love a good read at bedtime.
It covers Quicken98, Quicken Delux, Quicken Suite which includes Family Lawyer, and Quicken Home and Business.

Good for new Quicken users.......1998-04-01
Not a bad book for new Quicken users, although it reads more like a software manual. Provides some useful tips on how to get more out of Quicken besides using it as just a glorified chequebook, but there aren't any deep secrets about Quicken to be discovered in this book. At least not for what I use it for anyway. Like most of IDG's other books, it's big, easy to read and easy to follow along. Probably worth getting if you're a new Quicken user. Veteran users probably won't get much out of it.
Book Description
A comprehensive guide, this book covers employee relations and the legacy of quality and reengineering, and discussions on the growth of public personnel management in state and local sectors. The authors discuss affirmative action and equal opportunity case law, work and family issues, the Volcker Commission findings, an analysis of federal pay reform and innovative classification and compensation systems currently implemented by federal agencies, a discussion of constitutional and legal issues facing public personnel administration in areas such as AIDS and drug testing, figures and tables on collective bargaining laws and trends, and more.
Book Description
The only book written on modern home grain milling. This book manages to present a technical topic in a fascinating and entertaining way. Unusually detailed and littered with historical tidbits. Includes mill selection criteria, an education on bread wheats, secrets for making deliciously light whole meal breads, and purchasing contacts for dozens of grain mills, plus oat rollers and bread wheats.

flour power.......2007-09-06
This book does what it does very well. What it does just wasn't what I wanted.
good for a beginner, of limited value for those experienced.......2007-05-13
Far too much 'preliminary' stuff and not enough recipes. Over half the book describes grains, grinders, stuff like that, which is interesting to a beginner, but of little value to someone who knows something about using fresh-ground grains. It would be nice to find a more advanced version with more creative recipes and ideas.
A top pick - and a 'must' for any serious whole foods cook.......2006-05-25
FLOUR POWER in its revised new edition remains the ONLY comprehensive guide on the market to home flour milling - and therefore remains a top pick for any serious home or public library cookbook collection seeking a strong representation of whole-grain cookbooks. Almost all commercial flours have lost fiber and minerals from processing - but home millers have a unique opportunity to retain these lost food values. FLOUR POWER: A GUIDE TO MODERN HOME GRAIN MILLING covers everything; from equipment needed to stone grinding, obtaining the best grains to mill, stocking the home granary and much more. A top pick - and a 'must' for any serious whole foods cook.

A Flour Powerful Book.......2005-12-16
I'm a bread-baking microbiologist with a different take on this book. One reviewer thought it had too much info but I think when an author examines a topic microscopically - without leaving a
who-what-where-when-why question about any aspect - the reader can't lose. And even if you happened to decide milling wasn't for you (a possibility another reviewer speculated about), the book is still a treasure trove of tidbits, details, history and how-to's that make for satisfying reading on a hot-tea evening.
Once I got my mill (I took one of the "quick-pick" options the author provided.) and some good high-protein wheat (I'm lucky to have the legendary Bob's Red Mill within driving distance.), it
was surprisingly easy to get bread without a hassle every three days or so. Although the bread machine makes a crust slightly thicker than I like, the rest of the bread is incredible and it's truly a time-saver. As the author of this book stresses, it's not the milling that takes time, it's the bread making.
Another book I recommend to real gourmet bakers (the kind who wouldn't stoop to a bread machine) for some delicious and heart-healthy ways to use home-milled grains is "Mediterranean
Grains and Greens" by Paula Wolfert. Similarly well written and detailed, it provides a tantalizing glimpse of a whole new realm of possibilities for using whole grains (and greens).
A very informative book on milling technology and home milling........2005-09-08
`flour power' by Marleeta F. Basey covers a much broader agenda than a coverage of grinding wheat for bread at home. While this book makes many, many good points, especially to an old style `Whole Earth Catalogue' hippie like myself, it starts of on the wrong foot with me with some exaggerations about the history of bread and milling grains at home.
Two early statements give a misleading notion of the history of bread and home milling, where the author gives us the sense that early agricultural households were baking baguettes in 3000 BC and that the majority of households were grinding their own flour up to the early 19th century when the industrial revolution took milling under its wing. On no less an authority than Elizabeth David in `English Bread and Yeast Cookery' and various authorities writing on French and Italian bread baking, I am sure that both grain milling and bread baking became very early specialities in development of civilization. In the ancient Roman world, especially, I know that both milling and bread baking were specialized crafts since home milling produced a product very inferior to what could be done with the great water driven mills and very few homes could afford to have an oven.
Fortunately, the value of this book is not in its historical perspective as it is in its two major agendas concerning the superior nutritional value of home ground wheat meal and the contribution to self sufficiency made by the use of a good home grain mill. I need to emphasize here that what home grain mills produce from wheat berries is NOT white all-purpose flour. This point needs to be made clearly to be sure you do not anticipate being able to buy this book to find an alternative source to your handy blue and white bag of King Arthur unbleached bread flour. In fact, one of the two points of the book is that wheat meal is nutritionally far superior to King Arthur's finest white or whole-wheat flour. The author goes to great lengths to be clear on the point that a modern mechanical process that simply cannot be reproduced by a home machine produces white flour. One result of this situation is that your beautiful, freshly milled wheat meal may simply not work in your favorite Peter Reinhart or Rose Levy Beranbaum or Peter Ortiz recipes. They will certainly not produce the classic Italian and French loaves from Parisian batards to Foccacia, let alone egg breads or holiday specialities like brioche, paska, or panettone.
This book is assuming that you are reading it for material for a fairly basic lifestyle change. It is not for nothing that the author is recommending you consider a home mill which can be operated both manually and with electricity. It is also no accident that the author tells us of ways to buy and store up to a year's supply of grain for milling. Ms. Basey is every bit the reincarnation of the hippies we see in the second reel of the movie `Easy Rider' who embrace a lifestyle where they grow their own grain and presumably have the means of milling it themselves, which, if it is corn, is not too far fetched as the Indians in their southwestern terroir still hand mill their corn. But that doesn't work if you live in Saddle Brook, NJ or even Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which brings to mind the question of why there are no references to the Amish in this book, but that is an entirely incidental issue. My last word on the survivalist aspect of this book is that a hand cranked mill may not be much good if you install the gizmo in your basement and the power goes out. A more likely scenario is that you will have a gas powered generator to run your hand mill and provide power for your laptop computer and the oven needed to bake your bread.
The two most important issues in the book are the major nutritional advantages of wheat meal and the selection of the best home mill to meet your needs, which may go far beyond the simple ability to turn wheat berries into flour. A device that can grind hard foodstuffs into a powder or paste has immense utility in processing the whole range of food grains including corn, barley, dried beans, nuts, and seeds. The problem here is that not every device sold as a home wheat mill will handle oily nuts and seeds and do a credible job of producing nut butters.
Getting back to bread, part of Ms. Basey's case is based on the ease with which bread can be made in modern bread machines. Unfortunately, I can't offer an opinion on this aspect, as I am have never used a bread machine and suspect that even the best bread machines are incapable of reproducing truly good artisinal or speciality breads, so I'll stick with my KitchenAid and Kenmore oven. She also does not address the situation about what to do with your bread machine when the power goes out.
All in all, this book is a lot of fun to read and to fantasize about what the neoprimitive life would be like with your basement stocked with bags of wheat, rice, oats, and corn, bunkering your bench on which your grain mill sits in anticipation of that long anticipated weekend when you really get down to grind some flour. It's biggest problem is that while it gives us everything we need to evaluate mills ourselves, it doesn't stick its neck out to evaluate and recommend the models made by the manufacturers we can access by phone, mail, or internet.
Like good books on pickling, cheese making, and tofu making, this is a fun book to read, even if you have no intentions of ever buying one of these gizmos. It may even succeed in talking you out of doing it.

Book Description
This is a classroom-tested and developed textbook designed for use in either one- or two term courses in Partial Differential Equations taught at the advanced undergradute and beginning graduate levels of instruction. In addition to covering the standard PDE topics taught in such courses, there is a heavy focus on vector analysis. Maple examples and exercises for the students are presented strategically within the book, and an Appendix on Maple facilitates the use of this computer algebra language, acting as a quick reference source for readers. In addition, a cross-platform CD-ROM which is packaged with the text contains many analytical examples for students in the use of Maple. However, despite its general computational orientation, this book is designed so that it can also be readily used by instructors not wishing to bring the computational aspects of a computer algebra system into the classroom. This book will have strong appeal to interdisciplinary audiences of engineers and scientists, particulary in regard to its treatments of fluid mechanics, heat equations, and continuum mechanics, inclusion of the latter being a unique feature of the presentation.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating book ..........2005-12-29
After reading a brief biography of Napoleon, I picked this book to get acquainted with the tough lives of soldiers. I agreed that Napoleon was a great soldier and strategist, but the events that ocurred in the Russian Campaign were disastrous, with a total disregard for the lives of soldiers, especially the allies. These people died slowly, mostly because of starvation and cold, fighting and dreaming to get home alive.
A few people did manage to get home save, and this story is a unique account of that, in particular when the army have to "reculé" from Moscow. A fascinating book to learn the unknown facts of wars in this period.
Wonderful!!.......2005-01-28
An outstanding book for anyone interested in history. Although it was somewhat common for politicians, generals and admirals to keep logs, it was extremely rare for a person of lower rank to write anything. Mainly because few of them could read or write.
The main part of the book and by far the most interesting is the authors diary of Napoleon's march into Russia during 1812. Nearly half of million men entered Russia. Jakob details the problems of such a large army and the lack of food. The Russians were destroying everything whilst in retreat. These problems however were nothing compared to that which was to come after the army left Moscow to return home. Only 25,000 from 500,000 survived. Jakob barely got out alive despite the hunger, attacks from other soldiers in his own army and the Cossack raids onto the rear of the retreating army.
The book was not written as a daily diary. That was just not possible. Jakob wrote the diary years later. The main item that stands out is that he details the facts without clouding the images with any political views or emotions.
I truly wish that there were more books of this nature by the common solider or sailor.
Extremely interesting.......2004-03-18
I had absolutely no knowledge of war in general or of this era but just happened upon this book and found it a totally compelling read. Absolutely fascinating. Keep in mind too that I am female, college educated (engineering/art) but one who avoided all history and related classes like the plague in high school & college--but I truely enjoyed this book and it made a huge impact on my mind. I plan to insist that my children read it. It certainly makes one thankful for what one enjoys in our society today.
Great read for those interested in 17th-18th century warfare.......2003-11-09
I find this book to be a great read. Almost everyone has some knowledge of the glory of Napoleon and his mighty army but few have heard about the common soldiers who fought them. This book truly depicts the hell that is war. Although it's an easy read for anyone, it's of considerable historic value. It provides a first hand account of the methods of warfare for the better party of 16th-19th century. Excellent read, go get it.
interesting - but for a narrow audience.......2003-08-06
The "diary" (it was put together years after the Napoleonic Wars0 privides the reader with a decent perspective on the hard life of a conscript in Napoleon's Grand Armee. The fact that a conscript was literate is in itself remarkable - even more so when you judge the book's command of language (maybe with a little "help" from the editor.) But the book, as short as it is, is not for everyone. I would recommend it to those who are familiar with the Napoleonic campaigns, military historians, or those (like myself) who enjoy memoirs. The brutality and senslessness of the combat, and especially his account of the retreat out of Russia are fabulous. Less so the rest of the book, especially the letters at the end.

Martha Manning's previous memoir, Undercurrents, reveals her struggle with suicidal depression and her slow recovery, ending with the spiritual peace she found during her time in a monastery. Its sequel, Chasing Grace, is divided into sections based on the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church: baptism, penance, Eucharist, confirmation, matrimony, holy orders, and last rites. Using this structure she relates episodes from her Catholic girlhood, her adult search for spirituality, and her own work as a therapist. Throughout, a sense of humor enlivens her account of a life spent in search of grace.
Book Description
From the author of the "absolutely absorbing" (USA Today) memoir Undercurrents comes an unforgettable portrait of childhood, family and community. The eldest child of a devout Irish-American Catholic family, Martha Manning weaves her story around the seven holy sacraments: baptism, penance, communion, confirmation, holy orders, marriage and last rites. She recalls her childhood pratfalls, adolescent yearnings and entrance into motherhood with wisdom, wit and remarkable honesty. At once poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, Chasing Grace is a wholly original tale of family and friends, happy times and difficult ones -- and thepainful, joyous journey from childhood to adulthood.

Catholic Kids - Flashbacks from the classroom.......2006-11-10
Absolutely a delightful group of stories of how catholic kids were taught to look at their world from Kindergarten through High School. Loved the milestones such as the celebration of First Communion and the precious rosary beads, the white pearl prayerbook, and ahh yes the rote confession we all went through, confessing our made up sins in the black box with the weird screen inside, hoping that the parish priest did not recognize us and tell our parents what we had confessed, which was mostly made up. Reading these stories, which were humorously written took me back to days I had almost but not quite forgotten. Martha's description of the nuns, priests and other kids was right on. She was equally funny when she talked about getting married and having a child. I was especially touched at the end of the book where she discloses her beautiful last will and testament containing heartfelt thoughts of her loved ones.
Absolutely Delightful.......2000-08-17
Not being Catholic, I was afraid when I picked this book up that parts would be over my head. However, Manning does an exceptional job of describing Catholic rites without getting bogged down in the explaination. I thought this book was touching and hysterical at the same time and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, even non-Catholics, who is interested in the religion.
Pay no attention to the Kirkus review of this book.......2000-04-07
The review by Kirkus Reviews of Chasing Grace shows a completemisunderstanding of the book. The reviewer states: "Her textseems like the record of a pleasurable, meandering conversation exchanging anecdotes about their childhood than a measured, reflective study." Maybe that's because it was a conversation about childhood, not a study of the Catholic Church. I was wary of this book. I thought that it might be a "I survived Catholicism" Catholic-bashing type book. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is about a woman's journey from childhood to adulthood. It is centered by experiences with her religion. That makes perfect sense because the seven sacraments are rites of passage for Catholics. To be sure she did have some horror stories to tell about her experiences in the Pre-Vatican II church, but she seems to have learned that The Church is populated by people - and people fail. Those wretched nuns she described did fail the church and maybe the church failed them. But, as anyone who knows anything about the Catholic Church, the Church has made such progress. Manning seems to recognize that. Or at least forgive the Church for it's transgressions. She sees past the human failings of the Church and sees the grace within. END
Life as Sacrament.......1999-08-04
Martha Manning not only writes a delightfully charming and hilarious account of her Catholic girlhood, she also, and more importantly, connects adult life experiences with acramental spirituality. Relating real life experiences in the context of each of the 7 Sacraments celebrated in the Catholic Church, she gives a tangible reality to spirituality and explores life as a place where one encounters the living presence of God. It is obvious that for Ms. Manning, all of life is sacred and sacraments are to be lived - not just as ritual moments, but as the very fabric of everyday experience. This is a gem.
Laughing out Loud.......1999-07-24
This book is insightful, well written, very real and all of those other adjectives which are used to describe Amazon's 5-star books. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys coming of age type books; it is a must read for any product of parochial education in the 1960s.
One warning, though- it is unbelievably funny, and I found myself in stitches throughout the whole thing. Great for me, not so great for those seated around me on the Miami to LA flight. Rereads yield the same result. Write more, Martha!
