Customer Reviews:
Great coverage of difficult material.......2007-09-07
Having studied under another book on the same subject, I'm able to appreciate how well this book is written. It makes the seemingly impossible to understand not only doable but almost fun, by including plenty of illustrations in a straightforward format as well as real-life boxes on current events.
The Excel tutorials made learning even easier when I got stuck occasionally on a particularly difficult concept.
The 70's are over.......2006-09-24
This text is absolutely horrible. This book is a throwback to the textbooks of the 70's. Incredibly boring and very poor examples. The accompanying study guide is a complete joke and not worth the money. This book is loaded with errors. If you have problems going to sleep, then read this text. No color, no diagrams just plain text like the olden day books. Not a good book for learning.
Advanced Accounting .......2006-02-20
The product was completely new when I received it. I liked the on-time delivery.
Tension Headache.......2005-10-24
I am disgusted that of all the Advanced Accounting books available my university chose this book. If you want to learn Advanced Accounting, chose another alternative. This book will give you a headache.
awefully written.......2004-02-08
this book is undoubtedly awefully written. I normally do not bother to make any comments unless it is beyond bear and forbear. This one fits nicely and consequently got my comment. Can someone write a better book?

** how learners can keep learning after the training
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide!.......2006-06-15
I'm an independent trainer and often look for resources that can keep me on top of my game. I have a library of training books -- some very comprehensive; some with only a few chapters of information that I can use. This book concisely covers mostly everything that I need to know as an experienced trainer. It's also a useful guide for new trainers or those who facilitate learning. Every bit of it was useful. If you need a good book to add to your own reference library, I would highly recommend it.
Not bad for novices.......2002-02-10
A good resource that covers everything from Facilitation to Techniques passing through evaluation and personal development. If you are a beginner or you are asked frequently to help other beginner-level trainers, then you would probably benefit from this book.
The Book is written in an easy and simple style that takes the reader through the different aspects of training logically and smoothly.
Solid, If Dry, Guide for the First Time Trainer.......2000-10-29
This is a reasonable summary of current techniques and strategies for training. The writing is a bit dry, and I got the feeling that this book was oriented towards human resources professionals. There is nothing wrong with that, but my preference is for a less academic style of writing. Still, it's not a bad choice, just not one of my favorites.

How to Measure Training Results : A Practical Guide to Tracking the Six Key Indicators

Book Description
In today's highly competitive business world, people are the critical - sometimes only - difference between success and failure. As technology evolves, businesses must train employees, clients, and even customers more quickly and more often. In this rapidly changing climate, almost anyone can be called upon to be a trainer. Some relish the role, but most view it with trepidation. The Professional Trainer provides both full-time trainers and those who train only occasionally with the tools and techniques needed to rise to the challenge. A basic primer covering the entire training process, the book can also be used as a troubleshooting guide, with chapters on how to determine what skills and knowledge to include in a training program and the development of on-the-job lesson plans, checklists for progress evaluation, and information on when and how to use media support, and tools for making the learning process effective and attractive.

Book Description
Written for "Trainers of Trainers", this is a no-nonsense Tour-de-Force of the training field, containing many valuable tools and references for those new to training and facing the "What If?" questions of their first day on the job. Drawing upon years of experience as a trainer in both the private and public sectors, the author provides a plethora of "hands-on" examples and applications, both within the text and in helpful appendices (CD supplement).
The book is distinguished from others in the field by its coverage of: Adult Learning Theory, Instructional Design and Alternate Delivery Systems.

Keep this close to the toilet (spare paper).......2003-05-09
Have you ever picked up a book and not been able to set it down? Don't worry, this isn't one them. Dry and ever meandering from one unrelated topic to the next, I felt confusion after just a brief reading period. Thankfully it was fairly inexpensive, and luckily for me another training book I own was able to fill the voids (and yes there are expansive voids).
It's your money, but don't look here for original thoughts.

Generous, balanced information.......2005-10-07
For three centuries people have been taking important medicinal plants from the wild, but this book explores the much better way to meet the demands of a rapidly growing market. Persons and Davis provide state-of-the-art information on growing and selling high-value herbs such as bloodroot and black cohosh as well as the plants named in the title. There are plenty of stories from experienced growers, too, which helps to make this book remarkably enjoyable to read. The authors' emphasis never veers far from guidance that is both practical and profitable. Whether you want to grow woodland medicinals commercially or simply want to enrich your pocket of woods with useful plants, this is a treasure of a book.

Book Description
Crystallographers have to apply many mathematical methods in their daily work. If ever they have a problem, this book will help to solve it. The newcomer starting work will learn how to apply these tools, the practicing crystallographer will find all the data and background material he wants to look up. In the decade since the first edition was published, new things have happened that required revision beyond correction of errors. Two chapters have been added: a section on the projection matrix and another on fast Fourier Transform. The author collected the information during his professional career. The success of the first edition indicates that many other practicing crystallographers just need exactly that information.

Book Description
This concise book is for chemists, material scientists, and physicists who deal with description of crystalline matter and the determination of its structure, and would like to gain more understanding of the principles involved. The main purpose of the book is to introduce the reader to principles of crystallographic symmetry, to discuss some traditional, as well as modern, experimental techniques, to formulate the phase problem of crystallography, and present in some detail the methods for its indirect and direct solution which are indispensable for further work. The book also contains discussions of structure-factor statistics, of value for resolving space-group ambiguities, and atomic displacement parameters which form an inseparable part of the structure. A discussion of the refinement of structural parameters, conventional, constrained and restrained, concludes the book. Derivations are, as far as possible, self contained and wherever mathematical detail might disrupt the line of reasoning the reader is referred to one of four appendices present in the book. The book is of course valuable for students of crystallography at a graduate and upper undergraduate level. No previous course on crystallography is a prerequisite for graduates in the above fields.

Book Description
This book presents the analysis of textured images using fractal geometry, and discusses its application to imaging science and computer vision when modeling natural objects. The authors explore the methods which can be used to simulate, analyze, and interpret coherent images, and demonstrate a new approach which segments each image into regions of similarity that can be characterized by a random fractal with a given fractal dimension.
Fractal Geometry in Digital Imaging is based on a research project, but has been written with a broad coverage and user friendly math to make the book accessible to a wider audience. It includes real world experiences and applications using the techniques described.
* Discusses the analysis of textured images using fractal geometry
* Explores the methods used to simulate, analyze, and interpret coherent images
* Contains coverage of real world experiences and applications
* Written in a user friendly style

Customer Reviews:
An all too rare collection.......2006-02-21
This collection of Ed " Doc " Ricketts letters rates 5 stars if for nothing else the glimpse it gives into a man that is all too rare. For the non-biologist reader considering reading Ricketts book, Between Pacific Tides, The Life and Letters of Edward Ricketts is a good place to start. If any reader is interested in exploring what John Steinbeck called " a mind without horizons", this is a very valuable resource as well. What we find in this collection of letters is really what his friend Steinbeck saw, a man with unlimited understanding of the human condition and a man who still, almost 60 years after his death, has much to teach.
A charming, decent guy, with a charming decent mind..........2005-05-18
...and that's it.
There is little penetrating biographical detail in the short essay that begins the book, and the failures of action and inconsistencies of thought are shrugged off. Everyone has failings and Ricketts's were substantial; but they are also what make us interesting, and are what often create the context in which greater aspects of character can be realized. There is little critical analysis of Ricketts's thought and work (which is probably not a bad thing), but we are left thinking, "Wow, what a nice clever guy; wish we could have shared a beer." Which is about right.
The letters are about as engaging as such collections go, and do sort-of flesh out the evolution of the man and his thoughts. But Ricketts was careful, as we all are, about the manner in which he projects and portrays his character. He is at a distance, more often than not, and somewhat armored.
Not a bad read at all, mind you, and I am grateful the editor has pursued the project. Pull up to a tidepool, have a beer, and do some non-tele(ological) thinkin'.
Good but limited by unfortunate circumstances.......2003-11-20
Ed Ricketts had an important influence on the developing science of marine ecology during the 1930s and 40s. Even if John Steinbeck had never met or written about Ricketts, his work Between Pacific Tides (co-written with the forgotten Jack Calvin) would stand as a significant contribution to biology. But Ricketts also was a close friend of Steinbeck's, and so Ricketts himself (as he appears in the Log from the Sea of Cortez) and the caraciture "Doc" (Cannery Row) overshadow his written accomplishments. For better or worse, Ricketts now is remembered mainly as Steinbeck's friend. Besides reading and thinking about his scientific work, we want to know what it was like to hang around Pacific Biological Labs and drink with Ricketts, listen to music, and talk about big or small things.
Ricketts was a hard-working and prductive biologist (without a college degree), a struggling small businessman, a father separated from his two daughters and wife, but close to his son, a serial monogomist, a drinker, a reader, a music fan, and by all reports a very appealing guy. Someone who almost anyone would enjoy spending a few hours talking to.
Ricketts important previously unpublished writings were collected in The Outer Shores (2 vols.), edited and with biographical notes by Joel Hedgepeth. Hedgepeth knew Ricketts and wrote in an entertaining iconoclastic style. It's long out of print and hard to find, but provides greater insight into Ricketts than this collection of letters can. Readers willing to wait should be encouraged from an NPR news report a few months ago that Ricketts son, Ed Jr., is editing a collection of writings which presumably will include much of the same material.
Ricketts wasn't a great philosopher, but he wrote 3 essays of philosophy that he was proud of. He was interested in music and poetry and felt he knew what characterized really good work. His ideas wouldn't fit into today's postmodern world, where a basketball in an aquarium can pass for art. Fans of Robert Pirsig's Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance might find Ricketts philosophy appealing.
Katharine Rodger has collected about 100 letters, written to various friends, family members, professional contacts, and John Steinbeck. She also has written a bare bones outline of Ricketts life, with little insight into his thoughts. We can fill these in ourselves from the letters, assembled mainly from Ricketts own papers (he kept carbons of his correspondence). Sadly, they cover only his later career, because his lab and its contents burned down in 1936. There are no letters addressing Ricketts marriage and how he came to spend both his nights and days at the lab instead of home with his family. Further, after Ricketts was killed, Steinbeck went through Ricketts files and destroyed most of their correspondence.
I found most of the letters here unsurprising. Most of the really revealing letters are the ones to Steinbeck, but there aren't many of them. I wasn't rivited to the book until the last few pages, when Ricketts (near) step-daughter dies, his long-time partner Toni Jackson leaves, and he suddenly takes up with 25 year old Alice. The emotional impact of these changes all within a short time must have been immense, but we get only a hint of it in the last letters to Steinbeck and Jackson.
A worthwhile read, but it doesn't leave you feeling like you know him any better than you did before. I hope for a more comprehensive biography some day.
About Time!.......2002-11-14
Renaissance Man of Cannery Row finally puts flesh on a real person who has been perceived as a caricature for too many years. In this book Edward Ricketts, a father, a marine biologist, a hard-working figure found for two decades along Cannery Row in Monterey in California (shades of Steinbeck?), and the persona found in at least six of Steinbeck's novels and short stories comes to life. Katharine A. Rodger has done a masterful job of editing that allows a wonderful insight into Ricketts personality and philosophies. The letters include Ed's correspondence with such figures as John Steinbeck, Henry Miller, Joseph Campbell and Paul De Kruif.
The book is a must read for any student of Steinbeck, Cannery Row or the Monterey area and is beautifully done. As professor Richard Astro stated "to know Steinbeck one must know Ricketts." How true.

Book Description
Doctors and Discoveries tells the story of Western medicine through the lives of its most influential figures, chosen for their relevance to contemporary medicine. With eighty-six profiles-from Hippocrates to today's gene hunters-this is the most extensive collection to be published in a single volume in more than fifty years. Famous figures like Louis Pasteur and Claude Bernard are profiled alongside lesser-known but intriguing figures such as patent-medicine pioneer Lydia Pinkham and the founder of chiropractic, D. D. Palmer. Founders, modernizers, and heroes are presented in a spirited and engaging style that makes for engrossing reading or browsing. Doctors and Discoveries is the perfect gift for anyone interested in history, science, or just great storytelling. "For the history of medicine, and much of modern medicine itself, there can be no better introduction than these biographies skillfully woven into our accumulated knowledge. They make for compulsive reading." (Edward O. Wilson, University Professor at Harvard University)

How today's health practitioners work.......2002-09-07
Centuries of research and medical insights have contributed to the fundamental principles of today's medical and research practices: Doctors & Discoveries is dedicated to the pioneers who made these initial medical discoveries. Key figures in medicine from past to present are detailed in a collective biography of medical history chronicling their lives and achievements. Solid links are drawn between discoveries, discoverers, and how today's health practitioners work.
A great addition to your reference library.......2002-07-01
A splendid book for writers, doctors, scientists, reference librarians and any educated reader who wants to understand the history of medicine through the biographies of its chief proponents. From Paracelsus and Harvey to Koch and Gallo, this is a highly readable history.
Many unfamiliar names lie behind numerous major discoveries and the reader is in for a real education discovering the pioneers of molecular biology, enzyme chemistry, viral theories of cancer, medical education, electrocardiography, cellular immunity and much more. A pefect gift for the young daughter or son who is looking forward to a medical career.
Great book on physicians as explorers/inventors!.......2002-06-27
I am always on the look out for decent books that can be used to teach students about phenomenal lives and mentors. This book accurately fills that need. Most of the physicians in this book were also researchers before scientific research was even a field. Many of these men (they are mostly men) came from backgrounds that were not particularly conducive to doing medicine, let alone the research that they ended up doing. Their families were not aristrocratic or learned, many had fathers who were tradesmen...yet for some reason, they chose to enter fields of medicine. Medicine was not always the prestigious field or career that it is now. Often, it was looked down upon, especially prior to its consolidation as a science. The work that these men did helped to raise the prestige of medicine, anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience.
Medicine, like most sciences, is a long ongoing process of learning. Not just about the body, but about what chemicals and what therapies are going to work for individuals. One of the things that this book makes clear is that those who succeeded in furthering medical knowledge all possessed great curiosity as well as often possessing great courage. So many times, these guys had to buck the current establishment, whether it was clergy, current medical knowledge (often dating back to Greece even in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance), and even governmental authority.
This book is well-written, and provides a lot of diverse stories about medical achievement mainly in European countries. There are a few chapters dedicated to women and only a couple involving men from the Middle East, none from the Orient. The author does bring up alternative medicine, but since I can think of several other medical discoveries and physician/inventors from parts of the non-European world that could and should be mentioned, I think this book should be followed by another including the inspiring stories from the rest of the world. All children and all adolescents, need to see mentors, scientists, and physicians that are like them; that it is possible to achieve in this area no matter where you are from, what gender or race or ability you have. This book is a critical and good start, but it is essential to take it farther...
It's important for kids to have diverse meanings for the word 'hero'. With so many in the sports world, in the world of entertainment, and now in the business world providing bad examples, it is paramount that teachers and parents provide alternatives to these people as to what actually constitutes a 'hero'. So many in the media and in government lambast how poorly our students are doing in science and math education, yet part of the problem lies in the fact that adults are not providing good examples of what is important and what is not. This book helps to place this critical emphasis back on the importance of intelligence, of creativity, and of compassion for fellow human beings. A truly vital book to have for educators and those who would be mentors.
