Book Description
A chicken tractor is a bottomless, portable pen that fits over your garden beds. Just set it wherever you need help in your garden. The chickens peck and scratch the soil to clean your beds, eat pest bugs and weed seeds. Best of all, they provide eggs and meat with that old-fashioned flavor. Chicken tractors have helped thousands of gardeners have better gardens and taken chickens out of factory farms and put them in the garden where they are your personal helpers.

Some good ideas for the beginner but needs some major improvement........2007-06-06
This book has some really good, practical ideas for the beginniner.
If you are into chicken production for meat there is a fair amount of information on that topic. If you are into chickens primarily for egg production (which is most of us) you'll need to figure out how to adapt the use for that purpose. This will involve implementing a nesting area and exterior access door into the design to collect the eggs. This is not a huge deal for the creative, mechanical types but might be an issue for some.
The book is extremely redundant and reads like a babbling person talking in circles. Cloudy, the information is sometimes conflicting and lacking in sufficient detail. The author would have done well to hire true professionals to organize/edit the content and draw the diagrams.
I have built and currently use 5 chicken tractors. The author suggests that you can build these things for less than the cost of lunch by using scrap materials. In my experience most folks would very hardpressed to find the materials needed for free. If you buy all of the materials needed they cost around $100 each.
Two people can build 2 of these in about 7 hours if they have only a smidgen of experience with tools/carpentry. Building one takes about 4-5 hours.
A few notes from my experiences working with chicken tractors:
1. I have used 3' tall chicken tractors for piglets (up to 4 months of age) with excellent results by wrapping the chicken tractor with a stronger gauge wire than typical chicken wire. The pigs root a large hole every day. When I move the "pig tractor" I rake their poop into the hole then rake the soil back into the hole covering the poop. This eliminates 95% of the odor and, of course, fertilizes my garden.
2. This method does not work well for waterfowl unless you have sandy or other soil that drains very quickly. On my farm in the NC mountains, confined ducks and geese immediately create a muddy mess unless there is a drainage system in place under the waterer. Drainage systems are not practical for chicken tractoring.
3. Chicken tractors work great for chickens, turkeys, and guineas. Birds raised in a chicken tractor will produce more eggs and be much more content living in this type of environment than those accustomed to ranging.
4. The author states that the chicken tractor protects poultry from predators. In reality this structure offers little protection from anything other than birds of prey and dogs. I have lost plenty of chicken tractored poultry to fox, oppossums and raccoons. Keep a baited live trap next to your birds or plan to camp out with them every night.
Hope this helps...
Good luck and good farming!
buy or borrow -- lots of good information.......2006-02-27
Because of the reviews I read here, I didn't buy this book when I bought Salatin's Pastured Poutry Profits, now I wish I had. It has a lot of good information and is entertaining to read. I borrowed from the library and am considering buying one for our home library in the future. Andy Lee gives you some good examples in both the NE and NC of how he has raised chickens, for meat and eggs. He has a good background with lots of hand-on experience. He does this for his own food and for some money, these are not just pet "no kill" animals. I found the most interesting part to be his ideas on using a greenhouse to start chicks on the ground in hay under the benches in the spring, then after moving the birds out to tractors, making your greenhouse into a naturally fertized and mulched bed for summer vegetables followed by a fall brooder for another crop of egg laying hens that can overwinter there. He moves his greenhouses and tractors, leaving behind beautifully fertilzed mulched garden beds, that's the most exciting thing for me -- my wrists and arms hurt when I dig with a shovel! He also gives a good idea of costs, of course you may need to adjust for the year and place you live, but it does give a good basic plan to follow. If you want to know how exactly how to build a chicken tractor, follow the basic plans and get some wood and nails and tools and try to do it! They are good enough if you have common sense and want to use what you have on hand or can scrounge up! I gave this only 4 stars (it would be 4-1/2 if I could) just because everyone needs room for improvement, but that's the highest rating I usually ever give. Best of luck to everyone with their farming enterprises, we need to step away from Walmart and the rest!
Very good for the suburban gardener.......2004-05-07
I originally got some chickens because Martha Stewart said they love to eat crickets and here in the desert we have quite a problem with crickets. I found out that chickens are wonderful pets, not much trouble, very friendly and they have personalities. And they really eat bugs - best pest control you can have. I read this book on the concept of the chicken tractor and realized for the suburban gardener this is ideal. Hens eat bugs, grain, and vegetable scraps from the kitchen. Hens are great little composters, and they eat weed seeds and pests up to and including scorpions and baby mice and snakes. They don't need much except food and water, and protection from predators. We allow ours to roam a fenced in yard freely, and pen them up at night. This is a useful book if you just want a few hens and want to improve your soil (we don't move our hens around, once a year we take 4 inches off the soil in their yard and spread it around our trees and gardens.) The eggs are great - I like giving green eggs to little kids because they all have read Dr. Seuss. This book isn't for someone who is more interested in egg-laying or meat production on a large scale. And, by the way, we don't eat our hens. We are running a chicken retirement home - they don't lay eggs any more, but they still till, compost, eat weed seeds, and control pests.
has good concepts, but the steps and details are off.......2003-09-07
I used this book for some research and experiment ideas in agriculture. while it has some great general ideas and concepts, i found that the entire instructions for building the chicken tractor were lacking in detail and had conflicting drawings and steps. some required materials were not listed, and the process was vague. in reading the book, it seemed to me like a great book idea, but was very hastily presented and lacked thorough attention to detail. it looked very "thrown together". it is a book i recommend checking out from a library if you want some ideas, but i wouldn't waste my money purchasing it in hopes of practical steps for a chicken tractor. (the book might give inspiration, but YOU will have to come up with the practical details of trying and experimenting to build your tractor.) hint...lightweight and portable materials and use creativity to adapt their basic (and vaguely presented) tractor
Fine book for right audience.......2001-08-11
amrdmr is worried about the wrong things. We don't raise chickens for pets. Why read this book if you have no plans to butcher you chickens some day. There aren't many old chicken homes.
The purpose of this book was to introduce you to the benefits of pastured poultry and give you a host of ideas. True, it didn't get specific enough when I wanted to implement one of the ideas. But then, the book would have been the size of an encyclopedia.
It was a great introduction book. There are very few that do as good a job.

Book Description
This book is about using game theory in mathematical modelling. It is an introductory text, covering the basic ideas and methods of game theory as well as the necessary ideas from the vast spectrum of scientific study where the methods are applied.
It has by now become generally apparent that game theory is a fascinating branch of mathematics with both serious and recreational applications. Strategic behavior arises whenever the outcome of an individual's action depends on actions to be taken by other individuals--whether human, as in the Prisoners' Dilemma, or otherwise, as in the "duels of damselflies". As a result, game-theoretic mathematical models are applicable in both the social and natural sciences. In reading this book, you can learn not just about game theory, but also about how to model real situations so that they can be analyzed mathematically.
Mesterton-Gibbons includes the familiar game theory examples where they are needed for explaining the mathematics or when they provide a valuable application. There are also plenty of new examples, in particular from biology, such as competitions for territory or mates, games among kin versus games between kin, and cooperative wildlife management.
Customer Reviews:
If you want to understand the concepts of game theory..........2003-05-08
look no further than Prof. Mesterton-Gibbons text. Although there are several classic texts in game theory, most proceed as typical mathematical works do: definition, definition, theorem, theorem, etc. This deductive path is great for rigor, but often a "feel" for the subject is lacking. The author's goal here is to proceed inductively, starting from examples and buliding up to the general principles. You'll finally understand, for example, what Nash equilibria in noncooperative games or the core of cooperative games really represents, and you'll be offered plenty of examples to demonstrate the concepts.
Kudos to Prof. Mesterton-Gibbons for writing a great text that really gets the reader thinking in a game-theoretic way!
Book Description
For more than 200 years, U.S. Army Rangers have earned their unrivaled reputation as the world's premier warriors with bravery, blood, and sacrifice. Being a Ranger is a function of attitude and a state of mind, as well as a matter of skills and training, and it is the mission of the U.S. Army Ranger School to meld and to fortify these attributes. Ranger School is a journey that must be taken one day at a time...and each day of that journey is captured in this book. It is the cumulative effect of each of those days, the arduous work, the deprivation, the misery, that leads to what is ultimately called "the Ranger School experience."
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-05-14
I have a whole library of of this type book , since I was in the Airbourn-Rangers 1951-1954.
an eye opener.......2006-03-24
This book is amazing because it contains his day to day activities. I, too, want to become a Ranger and I've done lots of research about them, but I must admit that I didn't always know what he was talking about, I did understand the hardship and I could picture myself going through what he did, it makes me think that I have no chance of making it through. I found that I would try to picture myself in his shoes, seeing what I would have done in his situation, or keep in mind on the tips he talks about to maintain weight, etc. It kinda gives you a heads up on what kind of mental preparation you need to have. It seemed that this course was EXTREMELY difficult physically, however mentally preparing oneself was the message I was getting from the book. I also liked all the little trivia he put in the book at the end, telling you who was eligible to go to Ranger training, and the meaning of hooah. hahahaha. Although i wish he explained things more in detail, i understand why that wasn't possible. I just hope i can prepare myself enough to take on the crap they dish out at you.
Insightful.......2005-08-06
I personally want to become a ranger when I join the army, and this book was an eye opener yet also inspirational. It shows the commitment and self motivation required for Ranger School. This book is a good buy.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic read!.......2005-01-05
I highly recommend this book. Especially interesting Rangers or soon to be Ranger candidates.
Read the day to day activities, night operations and tough moments of Ranger school from a new perspective. I couldn't put this book down!
I had chills!.......2003-04-09
John has done a wonderful job of putting me back into hell. I could actually feel the scrapes and bruises. There were times that the memories were real enough that I had to put the book down. I highly recommend The Coveted Black and Gold to anyone who has this experience under their belt and to anyone looking to take the challenge.
The Ultimate Survivor Game.......2003-02-10
Reading this book opened all the floodgates of memory of my own Ranger School class in the winter of 1970. I had forgotten so much of the physical punishment, of one C-ration a day while climbing the mountains and wading the swamps, of teeth-shattering snow and icy swamp water, of halucinating and sleeping on my feet, of dropping to 125 pounds on a 5-foot 10-inch frame. And more than the physical, there was the emotional and the mental toll. Heartbreakingly exhausting past exhaustion. There were times when the book invoked such vivid memories of misery that I really wanted to just put it down and walk away for awhile. What an outstanding book! I'm amazed that the author was able to pull off keeping the journal and his small Kodak cartridge camera through all the Ranger instructor equipment shake-down inspections. I'm also amazed at the consistency of his experiences and mine. People have asked me through the years, "What was Ranger School like?" I never could begin to find any words to do the experience justice. How do I describe the indescribable? Now, however, J.D. Lock has done just that. The next time I'm asked, I'll just hand them the book and answer, "Here. Read." Every Ranger or family of a Ranger should have this book. Rangers Lead The Way, Sir!
Drive On.......2002-04-23
This book is extremely valuable for its day-to-day description of life at Ranger School, to give aspiring Rangers an idea of what's in store when they tackle the nine-week course.
And for someone who completed Ranger School just a few years before the author, it was a stunning trip backward in time. The passage of almost three decades had blurred my memories substantially, but Lock's account resurrected a significant number of them -- little things that added so much richness to the course yet faded immediately upon graduation, plus some monstrous things that one's mind tends to dilute on purpose. It's all here: The kinetic, frenetic action of the first phase, the physical training, the long runs, the hand-to-hand combat sessions (along with taking a dive during the competitive portion, to avoid injury), the mess hall experience, chin-ups before every meal, reporting to the Tacs at every meal, low-crawling on that rocky road in the company area, the swelling unpleasance of Camp Darby, where night operations began the sleep deprivation process. The descripion of the Mountain Phase is equally vivid, the terrible patrols up and down horrendous, 60-degree slopes in the dead of night, with fallen trees blocking the way, the fatigue really starting to take its toll now -- Lock's account brought it all back... the rain, the sleep-starvation, the hunger, and even a photo of those little Mountain huts I thought I'd never see again.
Lock noted something I considered significant at the time, an excellent example of the Ranger Department's psychological choreography. At the end of the Mountain Phase, classes were roused early (0300) to make the return bus trip to Fort Benning from Camp Merrill. Some students were feeling great after the Mountains, having passed all of their graded patrols; others, like me, were one up and two down -- on the brink of failing the course. As the busses entered the Benning Ranger area later that morning, we saw the previous class standing on the old airstrip behind the City Team barracks, enjoying its graduation ceremony. Students who were doing well (such as Lock) were jubilant and inspired; students who were faltering (like me) experienced a massive wave of depression.
Lock's account of the Florida phase was terrific... cold, wet, exhausted and starving. I had forgotten how we surreptitiously obsessed over food, frequently murmuring about the things we would eat after we finished the course... fried chicken, cherry pie, gosh, hamburgers!
The last days of slogging through the swamps, the RELIEF when it was all finally over, the brevity of the double-time graduation ceremony (during my own, we saw the busses from the next class pass before us; more Ranger excellence in timing and execution!) -- it's all here.
Lock's constant use of vernacular was appropriate, reflecting how Ranger students, soon completely immersed in the training, communicate with one another. You'll pick it up, after a few pages.
This is a super little diary. I just can't imagine how he found the energy or time to do it. Enjoy, and Drive On.
Very well-done........2001-12-30
This is the real deal. An insider's look at the fabled Ranger School, a course designed to weed out all non-hackers and craft a group of the finest soldiers on God's green earth. The United States Army Rangers are truly an elite breed, and this day-by-day account of the qualification process shows how a man changes when placed under the stress of such rigorous training. Author John D. Lock is a talented writer and the account of Ranger School is his own quest for "the coveted black and gold." We should be grateful that Lock was able to clandestinely take notes on each of his day's activities, a practice that would have most likely earned him disqualification from Ranger School had he been discovered. His daily log lets perspective Rangers know what to expect, but can also be read for entertainment purposes for those who are not considering entering Ranger School. I have been seriously debating trying to become a Ranger after I am done with school, and this book made me think twice about it. However, it also made me think a third time and became an inspiration for me. Pick this book up, it doesn't get much better.
