This is the best farming-as-a-business handbook I've read to date. You Can Farm is informative and empowering. Joel Salatin provides examples of how to and how not to farm. Running a farm like a hobby instead of a business is a sure way to fail. Farm enterprises and equipment should also pay for themselves--this includes big trucks and big tractors. Salatin also encourages potential farmers to get their families involved and see if it is something they really want to do.

This book is filled with stories of successes and failures of many people and various farm enterprises. While the book is almost ten years old, it still reflects the current state of farming, a quasi feudal system relegating farmers and food (not to be confused with nutrition or health) to mere inputs and outputs. Salatin also points out that we have very little, if any, knowledge about the materials we ingest many times each day. Many of us (yours truly included) do not know where our "food" came from or what it took to make it.

Once you get beyond Salatin's lamentations on how industrial farming has destroyed food, the environment, and people and his extensive use of modifiers ("Don't let anyone kid you into thinking amalgamated, extruded, irradiated, genetically engineered, adulterated fecal particulate pseudo- food from...), you will experience the valuable insight and encouragement he provides.

For years I asked myself if farming is really possible. It took me a while to get serious about it and then I read You Can Farm. Now, I believe it is possible. I've not only read this book, but as a result, I have read many other farm business-related literature, attended farming conferences, association meetings, and agricultural field-days in order to get more information on what will be the best approach for me to take in my move to the farm. I've also visited with farmers running successful and unsuccessful operations. Farming is possible for me because it provides an opportunity for me to exploit my zeal for innovation, build a successful environmentally friendly business, and healthfully feed and build my family and community.

Not for the faint of heart.......2007-06-03

If you don't like reality checks, don't read this book. With his no-nonsense attitude, Salatin walks you through several opportunities in farming that show tremendous potential as profitable enterprises, and he also tells you what to stay away from and why (e.g. starting a horse or alpaca farm is NOT the best way to break into farming and turn a real profit, no matter how pretty or cuddly they may be).

Yes, occasionally he does break into a radical conservative rant--but who cares what he thinks about healthcare and New York City? What matters to me is that I come away from the book equipped with knowledge that will help me make wiser decisions. For someone like me who's starting from scratch, what I want to know is how I will do things differently after reading this book, and in that regard, this book was EXCELLENT.

The most important message that Salatin drilled through my head with "You Can Farm" is this: Carve your niche first, start the farm later. Most of us have it backwards. Perhaps too many people have seen "Field of Dreams" and assume "Build it, and they will come." It simply doesn't work that way with farming. That's why so many agricultural operations depend on off-farm income and/or go out business completely.

Then there's the little fantasy of having a patch of land to call your own. I'm no stranger to it; I want to own the land I farm, too, for no reason other than I just want to. But it comes at a high cost, and Salatin won't let you forget it: "Land should only be acquired when you know what to do with it, and the size should be less important than location. Be patient and let your farming enterprise drive the land base, rather than the land base driving the farm." If you latch onto a piece of land too early on, you'll probably end up painting yourself into a corner--a tight, unprofitable corner.

And that brings me to Salatin's next major point: Stay flexible. In order to succeed in farming, you've got to be an opportunist. That means you've got to have an eye for chances to fill a niche, and be adaptive enough to fill them. If you invest in a specific type of farming, if you weigh yourself down with unnecessary expenses, or if you're too hung up on waiting for the "perfect" opportunity, then the REAL opportunities will pass you by.

This book is for farming ENTREPRENEURS: people who need to turn a solid profit from farming in order to pursue it at all. If you're interested in having a farm more for a lifestyle than for a living, or if you don't mind working an outside job, or if you're at all squeamish about livestock and everything it entails (including "processing" and "culling"), then you may prefer titles by Eliot Coleman and the like. But if you want to learn how to approach farming as a business, this is a must-have.

Though Joel has some strong opinions that some may struggle with, when I finished this book I believed him--I CAN farm! He gives great advice about pitfalls to avoid and issues to consider.

Not only a good read on farming, but I'd recommend to any entrepreneur-minded person. You might not agree with every social stance that the author takes, but he does offer thought provoking insights into the food system and the American consumer. I appreciate his take on living below your means, working hard and striving for innovation.

In The Emerging Consensus of Social Systems Theory Bausch summarizes the works of over 30 major systemic theorists. He then goes on to show the converging areas of consensus among these out-standing thinkers.
Bausch categorizes the social aspects of current systemic thinking as falling into five broadly thematic areas: designing social systems, the structure of the social world, communication, cognition and epistemology.
These five areas are foundational for a theoretic and practical systemic synthesis. They were topics of contention in a historic debate between Habermas and Luhmann in the early 1970's. They continue to be contentious topics within the study of social philosophy.

No end to the fresh ideas.......2003-01-16

People new to systems thinking and cybernetics are looking for handy resources to get started. This book requires something more. However, once a person gains a basic understanding, this book has proven to me to be one of the best. It points the reader in a number of directions for further study, and gives a useful summary of what the reader will find there.

Its treatment of the famous Luhmann-Habermas debates was especially helpful, and I plan to use a number of other sections in my own studies and college teaching for some time to come. I find that the writer understood the importance of orienting the reader who hadn't been comfortable with the science and mathematics that often go with systems thinking.

The author does an especially good job trying to integrate certain concerns with democracy, participative management, and widespread involvement that a systems approach sometimes neglects in pursuit of social engineering by a technical elite.

This book was heavier than a simple introduction, so it is not exactly the front door to systems thinking, but I have found it to be a hallway to many rooms that I am still exploring -- thanks to Kenneth Bausch.

awsome read! this guy went through hell and lived . i found how he described abandoning his PAK ( life-saver many times ) very moving.he always gave a damn about his troops ( which doesn't happen nowadays ).i highly recommend this read to anyone who wants to know how the heer ( not the ss or nazis etc. ) made it through this war of extreme depravity. excellent in my books!

first hand account of Herr soldier on the eastern front.......2007-08-08

I found this first hand account of fighting on the eastern front behind a Pak (anti-tank gun) interesting. The narrative could get monotonous at times, which reflected down time at the front. I got a better idea of what fighting was like in the southern and Crimean fronts and what Germans' experienced in the Soviet POW camps after the war.
That there was no index was a letdown since I like to look up many of the persons and events for future reference.
I sensed that Bidermann was a soldier doing his duty, not a Nazi. He was caught up in the turmoil of the times and was just trying to survive.

I was about to throw this book away................2007-05-19

I never bought this book but got it as a book club promotion. I had it at home and never bothered to read it. The cover is pretty dull which is a mistake by the publishers because it may cost them sales in my opinion. I was having a clear out one day and thought to myself that I must get rid of this amongst other unwanted books. I thought about putting it on e-bay but decided to throw it away instead. Something stopped me. I'm glad I kept it because it is a totally unputdownable memoir of a German soldier on the Eastern Front. I was totally engrossed in the book and really glad about the 'something' that kept me from chucking it out.

No-Nonsense Gritty account of day to day life in the Russian Front.......2007-03-18

Biddermann's memoir captures his gradual transformation into a battle hardened veteran as he and his comrades experience the changing fortunes of the German army in the Russian campaign. As the troops advance quickly through the Ukraine and the Crimea the Soviet resistance and intensity of the fighting increase and Bidderman relates in great detail both the mundane day to day details of the soldier's life with gripping descriptions of the actual combat. The feelings associated with being far from home, in a strange country and losing friends and comrades along the way are expressed in plain language.
AS you read this you cannot help but admire the troops from both the German and Russian side who endured this difficult phase of the War. This is a combat memoir that ranks among the finest and should not be missed by those with an interest in history and the second world war.

This book is the "real thing" a startling account of a dedicated professional German soldier and his real life experiences on the Eastern Front. What makes this book interesting is, it's factual, historically accurate, and does not bog down into irrelevant viewpoints - there is no filler - it's all action. The book exclusively describes the day-to-day life and death events of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. It also provides the reader with an unbelievable insight into what it was like to fight the Russians day-after-day, under horrible conditions, without adequate supplies and man power. The author provides a factual view into the daily life of the German solider on the battlefield. What I found interesting about this book is the author literally takes a back seat when he is telling his story. He praises his men and focuses very little on the fact he was a "hero" in his own right - the sign of a professional officer. Lastly, the author brings to light the brutal way the Russian's treated the unarmed German prisoners of war. The atrocities, forced labor, starvation, punishment, and beatings come to the surface in a brief description of life in the Russian POW camps.
