5 out of 5 stars Logsdon is Amazing.......2007-09-24

Mr. Logsdon is a real farmer. Really! I say that without the sarcastic pun that he assigns to it. I am so thirsty for a knowledge of farming, and while I like the Extension Agency employees (they are dedicated and anxious to help), it is essential to read the truth about farming -- without the influence of the large agriculture bastards who have taken the nutrition out of our food and reingineered seeds to withstand extremely toxic Roundup sprayed over the fields! We eat that stuff! Anyone who wants live a productive life and touch the earth should Logsdon, Kingsolver, and other experienced small farmers. Thank you, Mr. Logsdon for documenting the experiences of farming and land/water stewardship. You are a gem!

4 out of 5 stars Old School Wisdom.......2007-05-26

Do not buy this book to find the latest and greatest information on farming or living independently. But if you want "Old School" wisdom etc on farming and independent living get this book. Many of the principles in the book are timeless and apply as much today as they did when the book was written.

                5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-12

I've owned this book for over 30 years. I had a copy, loaned it out, didn't get it back, and bought another. It is essentially a compendium of articles. Though some are dated, most have at least one piece of useful information for those wishing to try pre-chemical farming.

                3 out of 5 stars Five acres..........2006-06-30

Interesting book for those who would like to be more self-sufficent and gain economic independence. It was written at a time when it was more feasible to be totally self-sufficent by going back to the land. Some of it is quite detailed and would require some skills that not everyone possesses. However it has good ideas and most of the projects are easy to follow.

1 out of 5 stars Dissappointed- Not a Good Referance Book.......2005-07-06

I bought this book hoping I could find alot of information to start a small hobby farm on my 4 1/2 acres. The description of the book made it sound like it was very informative about raising animals, gardening, etc.

This book does cover all aspects. I wanted ideas on which animals are better to raise and such, particularly goats. I was very dissappointed on the section on farm animals. The writer wrote a bit about cows (probably because he raised them), he mentioned goats in about two sentences. All articles were so short and they were not helpful.

If you want to have a book just to read and not really use as a reference go ahead and purchase it. All the articles I wanted to know were all hard to find, had little information (really no information) and I felt that the writer just gave his own personal opinions and not facts.

For me I was dissappointed and now looking to find another reference guide to help me on my way to have a lovely hobby farm. I needed informtion on gardening, making maple syrup, canning/freezing, raising goats, raising beef cows, raising ducks and so forth. This book was not helpful at all. :( :( :(

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative.......2002-09-25

Full of history and mythology, I especially liked the section on archaeoastronomy. For a more detailed look at this subject, take a look at the books by A.F. Aveni.

The authors do seem to be supporters of the pseudoscience astrology, although they never make a case for it in this book.
Astrology is supposedly based on the movements of the heavens, but I have never met an astrologer who even begun to understand Kepler's laws or Einstien's relativity equations, all which describe the movements of the heavens.

Two technical errors in the book: They say (p72) that Pluto is bigger than Mercury. No, Mercury is over twice the size of Pluto.
                    P. 43 says there were 3 kings in the Christmas story - a common misconception. Technically, it doesn't say how many, which is why some traditions hold many more.

A note on p 105: They mention the "unknown God" that Paul refers to in Acts. They are apparently unware of the historical records which suggest this monument to the unknown god was dedicated to the God of Christianity years before Paul arrived after this God performed miracles for people in the area. An interesting look into biblical authencity that the author's overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars The sky belongs to no one. The sky belongs to everyone........2000-05-05

A fine generalist introduction to the metaphors of the sky. Generalist because it is concerned with more than western astrological symbols. At this stage in human history, with our emerging global viewpoint & understanding of the Earth itself as a living being, astrologers, too, must allow their knowledge to expand & deepen. We are slowly passing out of the Piscean Age & into Aquarius, & that means irresistable changes. Those with pagan or wiccan inclinations need a less Eurocentric comprehension of sky spirituality. The Secret Language of Stars and Planets, while rooted in the Western Zodiac, takes a multicultural path beyond those borders. So all of the Planets are provided with some identifications from Chinese, Egyptian, Incan, Indian & Pre-Columbian cultures, though not in especially great detail. Still, the artwork is lovely (if a bit less so than Dr. Fontana's "The Secret Language of Symbols") & the information is accurate.

The really outstanding part of this book is the section on Sacred Alignments. The astronomical designs and spiritual purposes of twenty seven ancient sites are explored. In addition to the obvious ones like The Great Pyramid, Stonehenge & Avebury, the book explains the layouts of such far flung power centers as Hashihaka in Japan, Vijayanagara in India, the Cahokia mound complex in Illinois, the Chaco Canyon "Ancient Ones" area in the Four Corners region, and several South American sites including Machu Picchu. Just enough to stimulate one's curiousity for more learning.

These wise, ancient peoples experienced the world in ways that are difficult for us to know. But we must try. To do so, we have to get past our limited geo-political views. Gaia deserves no less. The sky belongs to no one. The sky belongs to everyone.

                        Description:
High amplitude cathodic pulse polarization of ultra thin oxide film-coated heavily doped silicon electrodes induces tunnel emission of hot electrons into aqueous electrolyte solution, which probably results in the generation of hydrated electrons in the vicinity of the electrode surface. The method allows the detection of tris (2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) chelate at subnanomolar concentration level. This paper shows that both n- and p-type heavily doped silicon electrodes can be used, illustrates the effect of oxide film thickness upon the silicon electrode on the intensity of ECL of tris (2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) and discusses the basic features of tris (2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) chelate-specific ECL at these electrodes. Thin oxide film-coated silicon electrodes provide a lower blank emission and a higher ECL intensity of the present ruthenium chelate than oxide-covered aluminium electrodes. This suggests that thin oxide film-coated silicon is a very promising working electrode material, especially in microanalytical systems made fully or partly of silicon.

                          Description:
The electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of the Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ (bpy, 2,2'-bipyridine)/tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) system can be produced at an oxidation-potential well before the oxidation of Ru(bpy)"3^2^+. Here, we describe the unique features of the low-oxidation-potential (LOP) ECL. The LOP ECL exhibited strong dependence on solution pH with the maximum emission at pH~7.7. Compared with the conventional ECL, the LOP ECL was much more significantly diminished at high pH (>10), probably due to the short lifetime of TPrA cation radical which is a crucial intermediate for the LOP emission. It was also found that the preceding deprotonation step played an important role in TPrA oxidation at neutral pH and would remarkably influence the emission intensity. As excess intermediate radicals were produced upon rapid TPrA oxidation, only 5mM TPrA was needed to achieve the maximum LOP ECL intensity in detecting trace Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ ( <~1@mM) and the LOP ECL response to Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ concentration was linear. Compared with the conventional Ru(bpy)"3^2^+/TPrA ECL, the LOP ECL technique not only produces higher emission intensity at lower oxidation-potential, but also significantly reduces the amount of the coreactant.

                            Description:
The determination of indomethacin (INM) in pharmaceutical and biological samples by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with in situ electrogenerated Mn(III) chemiluminescence (CL) detection was proposed. The method was based on the direct CL reaction of INM and Mn(III), which was in situ electrogenerated by constant current electrolysis. The chromatographic separation was carried out on Nucleosil RP-C"1"8 column (250mmx4.6mm; i.d., 5@mm; pore size, 100A) at 20^oC. The mobile phase consisted of methanol:water:acetic acid=67:33:0.1 solution. At a flow rate of 1.0mLmin^-^1, the total run time was 10min. The effects of several parameters on the HPLC resolution and CL emission were studied systematically. Under the optimal conditions, a linear range from 0.01 to 10@mgmL^-^1(R^2=0.9991), and a detection limit of 8ngmL^-^1 (signal-to-noise ratio=3) for INM were achieved. The relative standard deviations (R.S.D.) for 0.1@mgmL^-^1 INM were 2.2% within a day (n=11) and 3.0% on 5 consecutive days (n=6), respectively. The recovery of INM from urine samples was more than 92%. The applicability of the method for the analysis of pharmaceutical and biological samples was examined.

                              Description:
A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the determination of total urinary hydroxyproline (Hyp) in rat was developed and validated. Urine samples hydrolyzed with concentrated hydrochloric acid were filtered using a disposable centrifugal filter after the sample solutions had been adjusted to a slightly acidic condition by a buffer solution. Hyp in the fraction could be separated by column-switching HPLC and detected with electrogenerated chemiluminescence detection using tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) within an analysis time of 25min. The calibration curve gave good linearity in the concentration range of 30-1500nmol/ml, and the lower limit of quantification was 30nmol/ml. The recovery of Hyp from urine samples was more than 96%. Precision and accuracy including within- and between-run values were less than 6 and +/-5%, respectively, in the assay range. We concluded that the present method could be used to measure Hyp in rat urine.

                                Description:
Cathodic DC polarization of oxide-covered aluminum produces electrogenerated chemiluminescence from hydrated and chelated Tb(III) ions in aqueous electrolyte solutions. At the moment of cathodic voltage onset, a strong cathodic flash is observed, which is attributed to a tunnel emission of hot electrons into the aqueous electrolyte solution and the successive chemical reactions with the luminophores. However, within a few milliseconds the insulating oxide film is damaged and finally dissolved due to (i) indiffusion of protons or alkali metal ions into the thin oxide film, (ii) subsequent hydrogen evolution at the aluminum/oxide interface and (iii) alkalization of the electrode surface induced by hydrogen evolution reaction. When the alkalization of the electrode surface has proceeded sufficiently, chemiluminescence is generated with increasing intensity. Aluminum metal, short-lived Al(II), Al(I) or atomic hydrogen and its conjugated base form, hydrated electron, can act as highly reducing species in addition to the less energetic heterogeneously transferred electrons from the aluminum electrode. Tb(III) added as a hydrated ion in the solution probably luminesces in the form of Tb(OH)"3 or Tb(OH)"4^- by direct redox reactions of the central ion whereas multidentate aromatic ligand chelated Tb(III) probably luminesces by ligand sensitized chemiluminescence mechanism in which ligand is first excited by one-electron redox reactions, which is followed by intramolecular energy transfer to the central ion which finally emits light.

Atomic layer deposition was used to fabricate optically transparent tunnel emission electrodes for the purpose of generating electrogenerated chemiluminescence from aromatic Tb(III) chelates. Y"2O"3-coated aluminium-doped ZnO glass working electrodes proved to be suitable for injecting hot electrons into the electrolyte solution during cathodic pulse-polarisation of the electrode. Observed cathodic emission at these electrodes was clearly based on ^5D"4->^7F"J radiative transitions of Tb(III) and calibration curves of Tb(III) chelates at these electrodes were found to be linear over several orders of magnitude of concentration down to subnanomolar levels when emission was monitored at 545nm by a photon counting detector and using time-resolved detection.

Hydrogen peroxide (H"2O"2) can be used as a coreactant to generate reductive-oxidation ECL of Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II), Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine), in pH 7.5 phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Although Ru(bpy)"3^+ is adsorbed and precipitated on the electrode upon reduction of Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ in aqueous solutions, ECL can still be generated and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) experiments verified the presence of some dissolved Ru(bpy)"3^+ in the solution. When H"2O"2 is electrochemically reduced, it produces hydroxyl radical (?OH). ECL is generated by an energetic electron transfer (ET) reaction between Ru(bpy)"3^+ and ?OH. The ECL intensity depends on both the Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ and H"2O"2 concentrations. However, a relatively high concentration of H"2O"2 (>1mM H"2O"2 with 0.1mM Ru(bpy)"3^2^+) quenches ECL significantly. H"2O"2 also quenches the photoluminescence of Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ with a quenching rate constant of 5.7x10^6M^-^1s^-^1.

A new electrogenerated chemiluminescence biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing ECL reagent Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ and alcohol dehydrogenase in sol-gel/chitosan/poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) organically modified composite material. The component PSS was used to immobilize ECL reagent Ru(bpy)"3^2^+ by ion-exchange, while the addition of chitosan was to prevent the cracking of conventional sol-gel-derived glasses and provide biocompatible microenvironment for alcohol dehydrogenase. Such biosensor combined enzymatic selectivity with the sensitivity of ECL detection for quantification of enzyme substrate and it was much simpler than previous double-layer design. The detection limit was 9.3x10^-^6M for alcohol (S/N=3) with a linear range from 2.79x10^-^5 to 5.78x10^-^2M. With ECL detection, the biosensor exhibited wide linear range, high sensitivity and good stability.

                                        Description:
A novel sensitive electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) method for the detection deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) hybridization based on gold nanoparticles carrying multiple probes was developed. Ruthenium bis(2,2'-bipyridine)(2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)-N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (Ru(bpy)"2(dcbpy)NHS) was used as a ECL label and gold nanoparticle as a carrier. Probe single strand DNA (ss-DNA) was self-assembled at the 3'-terminal with a thiol group to the surface of gold nanoparticle and covalently labeled at the 5'-terminal of a phosphate group with Ru(bpy)"2(dcbpy)NHS and the resulting conjugate, (Ru(bpy)"2(dcbpy)NHS)-ss-DNA-Au, was taken as a ECL probe. When target analyte ss-DNA was immobilized on a gold electrode by self-assembled monolayer technique and then hybridized with the ECL probe to form a double-stranded DNA (ds-DNA), a strong ECL response was electrochemically generated. The ECL intensity was linearly related to the concentration of the complementary sequence (target ss-DNA) in the range from 1.0x10^-^1^1 to 1.0x10^-^8molL^-^1, and the linear regression equation was S=57301+4579.6lg C (unit of C is molL^-^1). A detection limit of 5.0x10^-^1^2molL^-^1 for target ss-DNA was achieved. The ECL signal generated from many reporters of ECL probe prepared is greatly amplified, compared to the convention scheme which is based on one reporter per hybridization event.

                                        Book Description

This book contains around 80 articles on major writings in mathematics published between 1640 and 1940. All aspects of mathematics are covered: pure and applied, probability and statistics, foundations and philosophy. Sometimes two writings from the same period and the same subject are taken together. The biography of the author(s) is recorded, and the circumstances of the preparation of the writing are given. When the writing is of some lengths an analytical table of its contents is supplied. The contents of the writing is reviewed, and its impact described, at least for the immediate decades. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary items.

Each landmark writing is discussed in a 10-15 page article that has a little bit of everything: biography, historical context, summary of contents, reception and impact. The diluted-soup effect is very noticeable. This is not a history of mathematics, nor a guide to reading the sources, nor anything else except a fairly useful reference. Some day we would like to see a book like this with the same level of ambition and density of ideas as the Encyklopädie of Klein et al. On the other hand, half the fun is to comment on the selection, complaining with mock anger over the inclusion of Monge's descriptive geometry at the expense of Gauss's differential geometry or Bolyai's or Lobachevsky's non-Eucliden geometry, for example. Fortunately, we don't have to pay hundreds of dollars to indulge in this pleasure.

                                        Book Description

The opening chapter of this book tells of a boy who lost his father at the age of two and went with his mother and seven siblings to live with their maternal grandparents in Southwest Louisiana. Confronted with a huge increase in the size of his family, the boy's grandfather established a dairy farm, called Magnolia Dairy, and put his grandkids to work earning their keep while attending the nearby consolidated school. The author portrays this life as contributing to his own internal discipline as well as sustaining the family through the Great Depression. A second chapter chronicles the family's antecedents from Revolutionary America to the present. As the boy reaches adulthood World War II looms. He joins the Air Corps and trains for work as a radio and control tower operator. After Pearl Harbor and a failed attempt to become an Air Force pilot he rejoins his radio squadron and is eventually sent to China. His wartime experience with new and different cultures abroad inspires him further his education at LSU and Yale and prepare himself for a diplomatic career, a story that he has told in A Farm Boy in the Foreign Service, 1st Books Library, 2003.

I've just finished this book, and find myself very impressed. Mr. Kendall's writing skills make the narrative flow nicely; the details he provides -- of people, places, the sequence of events, and how all that related to the larger picture -- constantly amazed and delighted this reader. His forthright and honest candor in relating personal experiences (including youthful romances) enhances the sense of realism most effectively. Readers who will identify with much of this charming story include anyone who comes from a rural setting or a large family, remembers the World War II years, knows about determination to pursue higher education via the GI Bill, worked in journalism and/or the foreign service. His insights into the cultural values of China, from both his colorful wartime Army duty and subsequent experiences in that part of the world, are particularly rewarding. It's a book worth reading twice.

I have a number of comments on this book, but the most important would be to question why it was written. It does not go into enough detail in the cases to be of use as a legal text, and the same lack of depth in cases makes it boring for the average reader. I had a hard time finishing the book, due to boredom, and only finished through sheer determination. The only possible value that I could see would be for a historical society in Oregon, or a legal museum.

The author describes a number of cases over a forty year career. None are coverd with depth, and contain only his memories of the highlights. Some trail cases were detailed in as little as three or four sentences, and many were a mere one to two paragraphs in length. It was somewhat interesting to see what has changed in product liability law over the years, but even the description of that was rather weak.

In addition, there were numerous errors in spelling, missing words, or incorrect tenses. I would venture a guess that there was no editor for the book and makes me wonder if it was published by a "vanity" publisher.

While the author appeared to have an interesting career, I cannot think of a reason to buy this book. Check it out of a library if you want to read it, but don't waste your hard earned money on it.
