    Book Description

HR Strategy: Business Focused Individually Centred addresses the two key themes of translating business strategy into a workable, measurable HR strategy while simultaneously tapping into the needs and motivational patterns of individual employees in order to unleash their maximum value. The ultimate aim of any HR strategy is to design the highest value organization.

Strategy may be a notoriously difficult topic to pin down but the author produces both a wide-angle view and specific examples of what a real HR strategy looks like in different organizational contexts. This is a book that covers the theory but swiftly moves on to the question of how anyone might actually start to develop a high value HR strategy. It shows the key ingredients and practical steps involved in implementation.

    * Provides a total re-appraisal and critique of the theory and practice of HR strategy
    * Incorporates references to companies such as British Airways, GE, Microsoft, Sears, Siebel, Toyota and Verizon
    * Demonstrates how different organizations have to develop their own unique HR strategies

5 out of 5 stars A sine qua non for business people and serious HR practitioners.......2005-08-24

For some time now, Paul Kearns has contributed some very stimulating articles in various management and HR journals. In this book, he sets out to clarify the direct lines of sight needed to ensure that the HR and Business strategies are entwined in the same strand of DNA, and along the way comments quite unequivocally on some of the perceptions of what is deemed to be "HR strategy" and some of the current fads that are considered to be part of it.

Kearns has produced a gem of a book, accessible, written without jargon and with a logical and analytical challenge to much of what is happening in HR departments today. As the cover states, this is "...a mandatory read for anyone with HR in their job title". This is not going to make comfortable reading for many senior HR people, either on the Board or aspiring to it, and I would advise them to get hold of this before the CEO or the CFO, or risk facing some very awkward questions. For anyone setting out in a career in HR this is an indispensable handbook, and I await his next work with anticipation.

2 out of 5 stars Hunh? What next?.......2001-11-11

I feel this book left me with more unanswered questioned than answers. What should I expect from the calf? How do I get it from place of purchase to the field? What do I do with the left-over animal parts from butchering? Where do I get the calf? Would it be better to buy a heifer? What are the advantages?

3 out of 5 stars Short on husbandry details - long on butchering details..........2000-11-28

I'm sorry Phyllis, but I'm going to have to slam this book hard against the ground. I bought it at the local Co-Op at a time when I desparately needed important details for raising a small herd of beef calves. But the details just weren't there leaving me feel burned for the.. money.. I spent. Assuming a person is raising one little perfect calf - then the book will maybe get them through. But important information about eye problems, footrot, branding (what if your calf runs off?), giving shots (like, how do you get a calf on the ground to medicate it..not all calves will let you just poke a needle in them), and parasites are omitted or dismissed with the advice to "call the vet." I just couldn't figure out what to do next from reading the book - cover to cover, and that's not what you need for a book like this. It's not a practical guide for the events that actually happen when raising calves. For example, Ms. Hobson goes through the details of blending a delicious grain ration from homegrown gardens for your one calf. Isn't it far more practical and realistic to buy inexpensive pre-mixes from a feed store when you need them? Can you really replace in time and effort the economies of scale of Nebraska grown corn with your little garden? Why waste the time? Similarly, she advises growing hay - but she leaves the reader on their own to figure out how to get it in a bale. Again, for one calf? However, The book is excellent on one topic: slaughtering. Half the book is devoted to it. If you want to heave up a carcass in your driveway (instead of hiring a butcher), you can probably find a way to do it with the excellent instructions in the book. Again, practical tips, like what to do with the hide, aren't included for some reason in the otherwise excellent step-by-step butchering directions. In conclusion, Ms. Hobson's book has too few details for practical application on a living calf...meaning that if you buy this book, you'll probably need to buy another one as soon as you get your hands dirty.

I'm fifteen and am in FFA I recently purchased my first calf. My Dad got this book for me and it has helped out from purchasing a sound heifer to shelter and feeding. The chapter on calfing is also very helpful. A great book for a first calf project.

              Book Description

The reviews and highlights included in this book of proceedings of the plenary sessions, of the Joint European and National Astronomical Meeting (2002), cover some of the major fields and projects which will determine the research in astronomy in the next decades. The highlights have been presented by young astronomers from several European countries, selected from a list of proposals submitted by different institutions across Europe.

This book reflects the multi-disciplinarity and interaction that took place in the meeting. By including reviews on space and ground-based observational programmes, the scientific topics are associated with the new observational efforts in instrumentation. These projects, under development, are expected to drive the research in the coming decades. With such a wide and interdisciplinary coverage this book provides a comprehensive review on the present status and expectations for some of the major fields in astrophysics.

This work is of great relevance for students and researchers alike, as it provides an introductory approach to a wide range of fields in Astronomy, but also includes some detailed reviews for the major topics in each field.

This is a general mathematics text specifically written at the junior college level. The book begins with the number system and surveys the whole gamut from Algebra to Trig to Matrices to Calculus. I use this text to refresh my skills AFTER reading a standard college textbook (ex. Stewart's Calculus). There are numerous worked problems. A great feature are the boxed segments that show formulae and special rules. The layout of the text is very good with wide margins and a good font size. I highly recommend this text as a good review tool and to brush up on your math skills.

                    Book Description

Through the impassioned and emotion-evoking stories of two men half a world apart we get a look at aspects of the Vietnam war that were not in the news, and of life after the war for the soldiers who went home and for those left behind under North Vietnamese control. We become witnesses to the impact of evangelism and cultural imperialism as we are both inspired by the devout and unwavering faith of this Christian convert and tormented by the years of torture he and his family sustained as a result of their faith. We are compelled to think about what it means to take responsibility for who one is and what one does. And as we grapple along with one man's questions of the practices of his faith and another man's struggle to be able to live his faith, we grow in our own understanding of what it means to be Christian.

5 out of 5 stars Vietnam Redux:A hero's search for healing and forgiveness.......2004-12-07

This is a wonderful story, almost spellbinding. It is beautifully written and will open the reader's understanding to the consequences of war and the personal, gutwrenching decisions required to survive battles fought side by side with comrades and the personal psychological aftermaths of those battles. This is a story of forgiveness and redemption after 40 years of pergatory.

Although published by Chalice Press, the theme is for everyone who has been affected by war in any way.

3 out of 5 stars A moving account of her terrible ordeal.......2007-08-25

This is a strange book. The terrible accident this woman suffers is heart-breaking. Her recovery is slow and she suffers much. Still, reading this book was a struggle for me because the author writes too well, if one can say that. Nothing is ever just described. Each action must be documented in detail, creek crossings must be described with color, texture, recollections of other creek crossings. Finally, it just became too much.
One other thing that was off-putting for me: as you read the book, it slowly becomes clear that her greatest achievement was leaving Berkeley and moving to Wyoming and working on a ranch. somehow, one bond was broken and another forged. While of obvious importance to her, it is not compelling enough to keep me interested.

4 out of 5 stars A book about a physical and spiritual journey........2003-02-17

In this book, Ehrlich uses many different techniques that all work together to make a good book. Basic ground rules of writing command us to ?show, don't tell? and keep the reader as involved as possible in the story. In general, Ehrlich uses special techniques where the story of her journey might become too abstract, too metaphysical, or too obtuse, or too personal to sustain us as readers. Here are a few techniques I found interesting.

If I understand Ehrlich's intent, this is a book about a journey. But the journey isn't just a physical journey (Wyoming to California to North Carolina to California then back to Wyoming), it's also a spiritual, religious and emotional journey. In this sense then, this is partly a book about ideas.

Interestingly, Ehrlich does not begin the book with a big set of ideas. She begins in the present tense, a voice and tense of intimacy and immediacy. She places us at the beginning in a dream or a dreamstate she experienced at the moment of the lightning strike. It seems to me, this sets Ehrlich up nicely to deal with the potential problems of a ?talky, head-game? narrative. My guess is she knows she's got a long journey ahead of her, filled with speculation, thoughts, feelings, readings, science facts, and what not, so she looks for devices to keep the narrative grounded and interesting. Her first technique is the present tense opening. Another technique she uses is to concentrate her details on the natural world. Although we learn about the physics of lightning, Ehrlich spends countless paragraphs describing every species of plant and animal one can encounter in California or Wyoming. With such a heavy dose of color, shape, sound and smell details I never encounter the accumulated feeling that I am too much absorbed in the narrator's head.

Ehrlich's attention to the sensory details around her help us trust her as a narrator on subjects we don't understand. We trust her when she tells us how kelp smell, how fish look and feel, how the birds fly, the feeling of snow between her toes. Likewise, when she tells us something about lightning, about it's electrical charge, about the currents it follows, or tells us something about Tibetan philosophy, we believe her. Her credibility as an observer of nature carries over to her explanation of abstract or unobservable phenomenon. This makes the whole story much more believable, richer, and more concrete to us readers.

In one section, Ehrlich talks about a legend she read about a lighting victim always being thirsty. In the next paragraph she switches to a scenic description of her filling water bottles because she's always thirsty. She goes on to cite some more similarities between her situation and the legend she read. This works to her advantage as a credible narrator because now, in other places, I will subconsciously project the description of other legends onto her.

In Chapter 24, Ehrlich comes right out and tells us why the book is structured the way it is. She says it is shaped like a convection cloud, and that inside the narrative would zigzag like lightning. When I read this page, I admit it did make the structure of the book clearer to me, but I have to admit I don't like it. First of all, she says she dreamed this. I don't believe it. It seems incredible that in the middle of this search for peace and health, she would dream about the structure of a book. This bothers me most because, now I doubt all her dreams. When is she really dreaming and when is she dreaming for the convenience of putting something interestingly metaphysical at just the right place in the book.

By contrast, the surgery scene is told mostly in straightforward scene. We hear the dialogue, see the things she sees without too much reflection and very little mysticism. This strikes me as a wise move, because by that point in the book, I needed a break from thinking too hard. It was nice to get a straightforward dose of scene, something fascinatingly interesting, yet at the same time as presented in scene form, it remained very present and accessible to me. I enjoyed just sitting back and watching the show. This let me catch my breath before hurtling into the thicker and thicker mix of narratives coming together at the end of the book.

All in all, Ehrlich pulls off a masterful collection of writing techniques to tell a compelling story.

1 out of 5 stars Please stop the pain!.......2001-03-22

First of all, I would just like to say that I was forced to read this book for my English class. Second of all I would like to say that if you don't have to read this book, by all means to not read it! Erlich is a pity-hungry, pathetically lonely, and not to mention, a horrible writer that does not deserve to write books. I really didn't have a problem with this book to begin with until I realized that the book was horrible and full of useless information that no one really cares about. So, if you want to know about getting hit by lightning, don't read this book because there isn't too much real stuff about that. If you want to know about things like: Erlich being sad and whatever other bits of information she wants to talk about including hermaphrodite animals, starfish, and her stupid problems with the beach, read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Left longing for substance........2000-05-12

It began promisingly enough. But I was left wondering what the story meant to achieve.

Though intrigued by Ehrlich's battle to live normally and make sense of what had happened to her with the strike of lightning that put her life in jeopardy, I found this book increasingly mired in a wandering, vague search for a point.

Not to say that I didn't learn a lot; but there was room for a whole heck of a lot more. And the reader gets a sense of profound isolation because Ehrlich provides very little in the way of any human subject but herself. Perhaps this was intentional, as she surely must've felt alone in her trials many times, but it was frustrating nonetheless.

And, as with about any Gretel Ehrlich piece I've read, I found her preoccuption with sex to be overwhelming to the story at hand. She is obsessed at times with the topic, and though it was essential to, say, Heart Mountain, I felt it was rather distracting in A Match to the Heart.

(By the way, I gave this book to a friend of mine who studies lightning and appreciates a good read, and she, too, found it to be lacking.)

4 out of 5 stars Read and learn.......1999-08-23

I chose to read this book simply because I've enjoyed Ehrlich's style and prose previously. I did not expect to learn so much about human physiological response to electrical injuries, and how unknowledgable and unresponsive the medical community is to those persons who suffer such injuries. This is an excellent source book for persons who have suffered electrical injury, for both the description of the vagarities of symptoms, with Medicine's inability to measure such injures by traditional testing, and for the reassurance offered by naming victim support groups. As a medical professional, I have offered this book to several persons who have suffered electrical injury, and it has helped them cope.
