5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Resume Writing.......2000-06-14

I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking advice on writing a killer resume and cover letter. I really liked how the author included "real" examples of people struggling to write a good resume; giving a whole sense of practicality. Also, the "real world" advice sections is very useful in providing information regarding what top executives want to see in resumes and cover letters.

                          Book Description

In this richly detailed memoir, the author evokes life in rural Michigan fifty years ago when he was young, inexperienced, and unaware of the blessings of being a boy on a farm. Jager tells of his rural childhood with warmth, intimacy, and an affectionate irony. We enter the spirit of a Dutch family farm, with horses and outhouses, pregnancies and berry picking, haying, antique farm implements, cats and dogs and churches. We feel Jager's affection for family life, yet we understand also his criticism of passivity and narrowness. Heart-wrenching yet funny at times, deep memories from a vanished world rise from their slumber and tramp across the horizon.

"Jager's memoir is full of life, an act of preservation tendered to us from an irresistible perspective of love." (New York Times Book Review)

                          5 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING.......2006-12-13

I have the audiobook version and I feel like I lived every moment of Jager's childhood. It's well written, open and honest; it's not only interesting, but a journey through the history of the American family farm.

                          5 out of 5 stars Pure Delight.......2004-06-19

I couldn,t put it down, but I wanted it to last...Every page evoked a memory and a smile, or an outright laugh. It paints a picture with broad stokes, and fine insight. Wit and wisdom and loveable folks throughout...Sorry to see it ended.

                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-05-24

I did not grow up in the Great Depression, nor Michigan, when and where this book takes place. I grew up on a farm in Iowa in the 1960s, yet this book described my childhood perfectly! The work ethic, parental discipline and life in rural America Jager describes is now a part of history. I am thankful he captured it so well for future generations. If you grew up on a farm, you will love this book as well!

5 out of 5 stars an invitation to michigan farming.......1997-12-02

The book was absolutely fabulous! It was as if the reader had been invited to take part in the michigan farm. It was heart-wrenching, yet funny at times. It made me remember that I'm a farm-boy at heart!

                              Book Description

The Solar Wind Nine Conference was the ninth in the series of solar wind conferences established in 1964 by Dr. Marcia Neugebauer to provide a forum for the interaction between solar physicists and space physicists interested in the origin and evolution of the solar wind. One of the scientific goals of the conference was to reflect the importance of the synergistic interaction between theory, numerical modeling and simulations, in situ measurements and remote sensing observations, in the exploration of the solar wind. Indeed, the opportunity provided by the many concurrent missions Ulysses, Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, SPARTAN, WIND, and ACE, which probe the Sun and interplanetary space from different vantage points, provided very rich material for the contributions. The presentations included invited reviews and contributed talks as well as poster presentations. This conference took place almost 40 years after Parkers prediction of the existence of the solar wind.

                                Book Description

Computer algebra systems have the potential to revolutionize the teaching of and learning of science. Not only can students work thorough mathematical models much more efficiently and with fewer errors than with pencil and paper, they can also work with much more complex and computationally intensive models. Thus, for example, in studying the flight of a golf ball, students can begin with the simple parabolic trajectory, but then add the effects of lift and drag, of winds, and of spin. Not only can the program provide analytic solutions in some cases, it can also produce numerical solutions and graphic displays.
Aimed at undergraduates in their second or third year, this book is filled with examples from a wide variety of disciplines, including biology, economics, medicine, engineering, game theory, physics, chemistry. The text is organized along a spiral, revisiting general topics such as graphics, symbolic computation, and numerical simulation in greater detail and more depth at each turn of the spiral.
The heart of the text is a large number of computer algebra recipes. These have been designed not only to provide tools for problem solving, but also to stimulate the reader's imagination. Associated with each recipe is a scientific model or method and a story that leads the reader through steps of the recipe. The recipes are also included on the CD-ROM enclosed with the book. Each section of recipes is followed by a set of problems that readers can use to check their understanding or to develop the topic further.

... These authors are masters. Each author, I find from surfing on the web, has a computer learning lab. The early reading introduces the fact that without the constraints of paper, undergraduates can learn to compose solutions to more realistic problems, eg. golf balls do not go on parabolas but do depend on your irons and crosswinds.

My last read text by the same authors, "Nonlinear Physics with Maple" edition 1 was a really inspiring book full of exercises. A master of solitons, Ablowitz, wrote (with) "Complex Variables" available at [Amazon.com]. Riemann Hilbert problems chapter 7 ought to further flesh out "Nonlinear Physics with Maple" last chapter concerning inverse scattering method in a to me readable manner.

                                  Book Description

Hundreds of novel and innovative computer algebra "recipes" will enable readers starting at the second year undergraduate level to easily and rapidly solve and explore most problems they encounter in their classical mechanics studies. While the aim is not to try and teach the fundamentals of the subject, the recipes are organized to correlate with topics found in standard classical mechanics texts.

Using the powerful computer algebra system MAPLE (Release 8) --- no prior knowledge of MAPLE is presumed --- the relevant command structures are explained on a need-to-know basis as the recipes are developed. This is a self-contained and standalone text, similar only in style and format to Computer Algebra Recipes: A Gourmet's Guide to the Mathematical Models of Science, ISBN 0-387-95148-2, Springer New York. The computer algebra recipes are introduced in the context of interesting tales, a teaching approach that has been successfully classroom tested by the authors. For the reader's convenience, all recipes have been placed on a Windows Platform CD-ROM that comes with the book; MAC and UNIX systems are also compatible. The CD-ROM also includes computer algebra solutions to hundreds of problems.

This new problem-solving guide can serve in a variety of ways: for use in the classroom or self-study, for reference, or as a text for an on-line course. Science professionals, engineers who need to quickly solve complex classical mechanics problems relevant to their work, and instructors seeking a modern approach to teaching this venerable subject will find this work an invaluable resource.

Ernesto "Che" Guevara was one of the greatest exemplars of the revolutionary 1960s, a man whose heroic adventures were essential to the success of the Cuban Revolution and whose legend fired the imaginations of a whole generation. In 1965, amid worldwide conjecture, Guevara left Cuba, where he was a minister in Fidel Castro's postrevolutionary government, and traveled incognito to the heart of Africa. People's hero Patrice Lumumba had recently been assassinated, and Guevara was to put his theories of guerrilla warfare to use helping the oppressed people of the Congo throw off the yoke of colonial imperialism. The first task was to assist the young Laurent Kabila in his struggle against Mobutu and Tshombe, the two key figures in the newly independent nation. For the first time, The African Dream collects Guevara's unabridged journals of the expedition. They are the record of the bitter failure of a political and ideological dream, and a telling complement to the subsequent rise of Kabila and his recent demise. Most of all, the diaries afford the reader a very personal insight into the thoughts and emotions of Che Guevara, the twentieth century's great revolutionary martyr.

While it might not have been intended as such this is actually a pretty funny read. 'Che' may have been motivated by high ideals but in his diaries he documents the nitty gritty of daily life and the trials of trying to whip a revolutionary army into shape. Frequently beset by attacks of 'the runs' (many times a day) and having to deal with Congolese soldiers who wanted nothing more than to run away from the first sign of trouble unless they had consumed their magic drink that made them impervious to bullets, the campaign seems to have been doomed from the start. If you want to get a different view of the reality of revolution from that presented in manifestos this strikingly honest diary seems like a great place to start.

The African Dream is a great book for people interested to learn what happened during the first of Che's 2 "lost years." In April, 1965, Che left Cuba, not to be seen again until his murder in Bolivia in October of 1967. Che first tried to bring about revolution in the Congo, which was undergoing the beginning of the Apartheid government that was to take the lives of millions of innocent Africans in the coming years. In Che's own words, you will gain massive insight into what went on during that nearly year long struggle for freedom and justice.

Galvez fought with Che during the Cuban Revolution and here he takes Che's Congo diary and expands upon it to offer a comprehensive overview of a historical event whose details remained elusive for more than three decades. The story begins in 1961 when Patrice Lumumba, one of the great African leaders of independence, was assassinated at the behest of foreign and native oligarchies and with the complicity of the United Nations. Che had visited Africa as a representative of the Cuban government and realized that the winds of change sweeping away colonial governments in Africa had made that continent a flashpoint of struggle between the forces of liberation and those of exploitation. By 1963-64, Che was planning a guerilla movement in his native Argentina, but the nascent insurrection was crushed before he was able to join it. With that avenue closed off, Che looked to Africa instead. Vowing to avenge Lumumba's death, he arrived in the Congo in early 1965 with a group of Cubans intent on joining forces with those fighting against the Belgian mercenaries and their native army. Almost from the beginning Che sensed a lack of revolutionary character among many of the leaders of the opposition, as well as poor training, superstition, and lack of military bearing among the rebel army. Believing that this could be overcome through training and an awakening of revolutionary spirit among the troops, Che launched a program of instruction and leading by example that was ultimately unsuccessful, despite great effort by him and his Cuban compatriots. After several months of largely inconclusive skirmishing, Che and the Cubans withdrew at the request of a group of African independence leaders.

Perhaps the most enlightening part of the book is reading Che's self-critique along with his analysis of what was wrong with the conditions of the struggle and other things that contributed to its failure. These same elements, including Che's intense and unyielding sense of mission, would reappear in his Bolivian diary. The interviews with Che's contemporaries that served in the Congo are fascinating and historically invaluable. Anyone interested in Che Guevara or African nationalism will find this an indispensible reference.

Filled with excerpts from Che's own Congo diary and replete with insights into the failures of the Cuban backed People's Liberation Army. A haunting look at some of the same failures that would befall Che and lead to his capture and execution in Bolivia. A great read!

My main complaint with "A Doctor's Life: Unique Stories" is that I wish there was more. In this book Dr. Close shares many unique and moving stories from his medical practice in New York, Congo/Zaire, and Wyoming. His stories from his time in Africa are especially interesting to me. In the pre-independence Belgian Congo he worked first as a hospital surgeon in Kinshasa, then in independent Zaire, as President Mobutu's personal physician. From his perspective as a physician he sees the end of colonialism in central Africa, and the beginning of the chaos of independent Zaire. One very touching story is that of his domestic security guard, an elderly veteran of WWII, whose wish is for a doctor to see his dying wife, just so he can tell his grandchildren that she was seen by a doctor before she died. The chapters about Mobutu depict a man very different than is typically seen in print; apparently even dictators have their good side. This book is recommended to anyone who is interested in medicine or Africa. [Note: most of this book is the same as the out-of-print "A Doctor's Story"; the newer version has two new chapters and photographs.]

In A Doctor's Life: Unique Stories, Dr. William Close draws upon his many years of practice to present the reader with invaluable insights into compassionate care giving in today's high-tech world of medicine. A medical memoir sharing cameos drawn from fifty years as a practicing physician and surgeon in New York's "Hell's Kitchen", sixteen years in Africa's brutal and chaotic Congo, and as a country doctor in rural Wyoming, these vignettes and observations include a broad spectrum of patients and notable characters ranging from African leaders to oil field roustabouts, casualties of civil war in the Congo to older people in rural Wyoming reaching the end of their lives at home. A Doctor's Life is highly recommended reading as both an autobiography and as a persuasive testament that compassion and courtesy are as important as scientific excellent when working for the benefit of patients and the advancement of the medical profession.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A trilogy in one book -- A Doctor's Life.......2001-01-19

An elephant in the maternity ward? A carpenter's brace and bit to drill a hole in the cranium? The "Urine Man" at the Presbyterian Home for Women? Oh, and much more! Here is the story of a doctor who, using the most primitive of equipment, performed a host of procedures in this African outback so far removed from high tech medicine as most of us know it today. From the often violent, always political machinations of civil authorities in the African Congo to the quiet complacency of a small Wyoming community . . . from the hectic internship in New York to the broad expanse of the western plains . . . it's all there. A Doctor's Life is the embodiment of the tragic, the hilarious, the truly compassionate. This is a trilogy in one book: New York, Africa, Wyoming -- an exciting, wonderfully human account of Dr. William Close and his keen insight into, not just the world of medicine, but the human condition -- witty, inspiring and stunningly true to life.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read- for Patients and Medical Personnel Alike.......2001-01-06

"A Doctor's Life; Unique Stories" is a gripping, funny and touching real life depiction of the odyssey of Dr. William T. Close, with a description of his career as a surgeon and physician in New York, Africa and a small Wyoming town called Big Piney. His experiences speak humbly of an individual who is a humanitarian and a practical idealist, who exhibits a deep commitment to his fellow human beings, regardless of their circumstance.

But there's more! This book goes well beyond a collection of stories about a remarkable man's life. The messages illustrated in the descriptions of the patients Dr. Close encounters refocus attention on the human side of medicine. Dr. Close effectively reminds individuals working in the medical field that it is the patient whose health crisis brings the medical team together with the multiple goals of understanding the pathophysiology of disease, the delivery of optimal expert treatment and compassionate care. The patient, Dr. Close teaches us, is more than a disease, more than `a case to be plugged into a treatment protocol'.

This respect for human life is evident in the stories of his practice of rural medicine in Big Piney, Wyoming. Dr. Close describes spending the time necessary for good care and seeing many patients in their homes, especially at the end of their lives.

The messages in this book will inspire many who practice nursing and medicine to approach the care of their patients with expertise and compassion, for the sake of the patient, and for the optimum experience as a healer. Potential patients will yearn for the kind of patient/doctor relationship that Dr. Close's patients enjoy.

"A Doctor's Life; Unique Stories" is a celebration of an approach to life and fellow humans that is dedicated, passionate and honorable. Everyone who reads this book will be inspired and entertained.

5 out of 5 stars If You're An Aspiring Doctor..........2001-01-06

If you aspire to be a physician--not just any physician, but a good one--these memoirs should be required reading. I first read these stories in manuscript form as a medical student, and they became the template for my professional life. As Doc told me in my last year of medical school: "Let med school teach you the science of medicine; I'll show you the art." And he did, through his life and through these very stories. For as physicians, we are trained to guard our professional boundaries, to not get involved in the lives of patients, and to equate curing with healing. Dr. Close's encounters, chronicled in this very readable first-person account, prove that's not always the best medicine. In "Tata Felix," he exposes with candor, warmth, and humility the foibles of his own humanity and demonstrates how powerful (and often overlooked)a simple act de presence can be. In his Wyoming anecdotes, he convincingly shows that while knowledge without compassion may cure, it doesn't always heal. The stories are well-written, the real-life characters vivid in your mind's eye, and you feel like you are there with him in Africa and in Big Piney. Most of the stories leave you with the distinct impression that here was one of those sublime moments in life when you learned something profound about what it really means to be a doctor. This book is, in essence, an impassioned plea to physicians everywhere to not assume the mantle of medicine lightly nor haughtily, but to wear it in humility and reverence, even perhaps with awe, remembering that they are called not to be served, but to serve.
