The current widespread loss of species, genetic variability, and even entire biological communities has caused serious concern within the scientific community and among the general public. The new multidisciplinary science, conservation biology, has developed to address this crisis, and both research activity and student interest in conservation biology have rapidly expanded during the last fifteen years. The excitement of this field is highlighted by 2001-2002 being designated as the International Biodiversity Year by DIVERSITAS, a scientific body associated with the United Nations. Richard Primack's Essentials of Conservation Biology was the first textbook in this field, and continues to be widely used in undergraduate courses. Essentials of Conservation Biology, Third Edition, is an updated and improved version of the popular first and second editions, and includes current examples, study questions, and the latest literature.

Essentials of Conservation Biology combines theory and applied and basic research to explain the connections between conservation biology and environmental economics, ethics, law, and the social sciences. This new edition stresses the need for theory, research, and an interdisciplinary approach in solving conservation problems. A major theme throughout the book is the active role that local people, the general public, conservation organizations, and governments can play in protecting biological diversity. An additional theme is sustainable development: providing for human needs in a way that does not harm biological diversity. Essentials of Conservation Biology, Third Edition, is divided into 6 parts and contains 22 chapters. The first three chapters (Part I) define biological diversity and give general background information in ecology, evolution, and biogeography. Part V reviews the range of strategies for protecting biological diversity in the wild, both inside and outside protected areas. The establishment, design, and management of protected areas are emphasized. The book closes with a strong agenda describing the changes needed to protect biological diversity, and the roles that conservation biologists need to play to make those changes a reality.

Essentials of Conservation Biology, Third Edition, is beautifully illustrated and is written in clear, non-technical language. It is suitable for undergraduate biology students, as well as students in other disciplines. The book is particularly appropriate for students who do not speak English as a first language. Thought-provoking, but muddled.......2005-12-28

This was the primary textbook for a graduate conservation biology course I had. I found the book to be an enjoyable read and thought-provoking. However, the book's organization was at time muddled. A decent introduction to the field of conservation biology, but as a textbook, it falls short.

Great New Spatial Methods Book for Epidemiology.......2001-01-26

"Spatial Epidemiology" mixes practical application with theory to provide a critical review of methods, challenges, issues, strengths, and limitations of spatial analysis in epidemiology. Subsections of the book progress from types of data, to statistical methods, to disease mapping and clustering, then end with exposures and links to health. Each subsection includes at least one chapter presenting spatial analytical theory, one chapter providing an overview of spatial analytical methods, one chapter reviewing a particular spatial analytical method in depth, a chapter applying a method, and one specialty chapter. Authors have included equations, comprehensive examples from both chronic and infectious diseases, and extensive references to other chapters and other works for each method presented. Earlier chapters provide a thorough background discussion of data issues that will be particularily useful to novices in the field. Statistical chapters assume intermediate or more advanced experience with spatial analysis, however, provide references to background and seminal works that will allow novices to the field to optimize their learning experience. There are several chapters devoted to cluster analysis, Bayesian analysis, and modeling which are particularily useful.

Overall, this is a very useful book for researchers at any level of experience with spatial analysis. Although technical terms are used liberally, the overall text is easy to read, clear and concise, serving well as both a teaching text and a reference book.

Jesse Pitts was one of the relatively few aviators who survived and blazed a pathway for the successful Allied air campaign against Nazi Germany during the early days of American involvement in WWII.

His account in this book brings to life the heroism of those who were pioneers in what was essentially an experiment in so-called "pin-point" daylight bombing--without fighter escorts.

His early aviation training experiences were especially interesting to me as a private pilot. His descriptions of those days show us all how brave and motivated Jesse's generation was.

His book is a very moving tribute to the spirit of patriotism and courage, which I recommend to all.

Excellent Collection of Stories that Cover the Emotional Range.......2007-03-13

As the daughter of a semi-country doctor, I grew up with the experience of having a father who always seemed to be on call. Dr. Macdonald's anthology of cases was an excellent read, and after the first story I immediately called my mom to share it with her. We both had a laugh over it, and I am going to recommend that she buy it, along with my 2 older sisters. I enjoyed reading the stories, and they are set up such that you can read for as long or as short a time as you want. A must-buy for any child or spouse of a physician!

I thought this book was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book... you'll laugh out loud and you'll cry as you see everything through the eyes of one rural Minnesota doctor. I'm couldn't wait until his second one came out! Read it!!

Charming tales of the North Woods of Minnesota.......2003-11-11

I got this book because I too come from Minnesota and work in health care, but once started on Dr. MacDonald's A Country Doctor's Casebook Tales from the North Woods, I was hooked. The author was what we would now refer to as a family practitioner who worked in a small rural community near Duluth from 1947 to 1980. His charming collection of stories is a delight to read, and I literally read the book from cover to cover over about three hours without putting it down. The tales of the doctor and his patients pull the reader through the pages without tricks of style, just the author's natural talent for telling a simple story: the life and death struggles of members of his community, the happiness of new lives begun, the suddenness of unexpected death, incredible courage in the face of adversity, acceptance of the setbacks of life, amusing vignettes of simple people living life among their neighbors.

FOR THOSE WRITING PAPERS in English, creative writing, journaling, journalism, history, and sociology, this would make a nice format to follow or a good bibliography entry. The author has used his own life experiences to create a history of his practice, community, and time.

A tale of love from Minnesota.......2003-01-29

Dr. MacDonald's book is a welcome remembrance to those who lived in Northern Minnesota in the 40's & 50's. His stories of survival (and sometimes not surviving) are very descriptive and detailed. When he tells of a trip through a swamp he carried his wife through to help a patient, you almost feel as though you are sloshing through the mud with him. His stories are NOT about heroics that he performed on helpless rural Minnesota residents, although he certainly could do that as well. They are about the heroics of those people he cared for. This story has it's humorous parts as well as parts that make you cry for the brave and futile attempts at life of his patients. I am grateful to Dr. MacDonald for this book, and I hope to see more from him in the future.
