Book Review.......2000-04-23
I liked this book because it had more and better examples than the competition such as Lambers Review Course. It will not repeat practice excersices. It has pointers and tips on how to build knowledge in a logical and reinforcing way. The first time I took the exam I paid $1000 for a Lambers Review and I did not pass any part of the test. The second time, using Wileys Review books ( $129.99 approx.)I passed two parts.

Great for Non-Accountants.......2006-10-19
I found the book to be attractively put together and full of examples. They address both manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments - including service industries. Managerial Accounting is a vital tool for businesses as it provides techniques for making better business decisions based on data instead of "hunches". Nonetheless, the material can be difficult to get through. The authors understand this and use real-life examples to help give insight as to the way businesses use these analysis techniques. Because the material can be challenging, I can understand some people finding the material boring. However, given the type of material, I feel the authors have done a commendable job in communicating the material in an appealing way.

Reading through this book is a BORE! :( Examples are almost non-existant, there's like nothing (like definitions) on the sides of the pages, and no glossary. How poorly written! Please find an alternative to learn this rather interesting subject. Thank you!

Disappointing.......2001-05-01
Having previously read "Fundamental Financial Accounting Concepts" by the same people, this book was a disappointment. It came off as incredibly dry, and was not all that clear in its presentation of the concepts. The "Fundamental Financial Accounting" volume is great, but I'd recommend another author for the managerial book.

This book is essentially an introductory managerial accounting book which purports to be an undergraduate text but is really at a high school level. As promised, it has an "easy-to-understand presentation" and uses a "hands-on learning approach". The book is clear in its presentation, it does a good job at providing plenty of easy-to-read tables, and it uses plenty of real-world applications as examples. However, it is extremely lacking in depth. Instead of providing you with a large quantity of useful, practical information, it gives you a small amount of that information and just a taste of what the field is about. After I finished it, I was left with an idea of what Managerial Accounting is about, but I was still rather ignorant regarding the details. I wouldn't recommend for professors to use this as a main textbook in any class, but it might work as a "suggested reading" for students who are having some difficulty with the more depthful textbook that you should be using.

Not worth it-- get "Worms Eat My Garbage" instead-.......2006-08-12
Mary Appelhof's book is the superior introduction to vermiculture. Both books are too cutsey in tone, and the illustrations are equally unbearable, but typos abound in "Recycle", and that really burns my butter. While there are some unique ideas in this book (using sprouted birdseed to aid in aration is one), there is little else in here not covered by Appelhof. Appelhof's book is vastly more readable, despite the sometimes condescending tone she takes. I can't recommend "Recycle" unless you want to own as many books on vermiculture as you can get your hands on.
Composting with worms is sooooo much fun!!!!!.......2003-12-06
This book offers the absolute perfect explanation of vermicomposting and explains everything you need to know in order to setup and maintain your own composting system. It's an excellent resource for the topic! I highly recommend it! In my opinion, it deserves much more credit than Mary Appelhof's famous book on vermiculture! I'm so excited to have my own worm bin in operation now! Everyone deserves the experience and should definitely get a bin started for themselves!

Great!..I have a problem with math and ordered this book--wrong!!...This book is basically comprised of "PROBLEMS"--but very little or NO SOLUTIONS on how to solve them confidently!
example: "Find the ratio of the revolutions per minute for the fan pulley to the revolutions per minute for the motor pulley"
explanation of RATIO: "A ratio of 2 1/2 to 3 would be changed to a ratio of 5 to 6 (this is the same ratio and was found by multiplying both numbers by 2)"---HUH???
IF, I wanted a book full of PROBLEMS---I would buy THIS ONE!!...but I wanted a book that would EXPLAIN THESE MATH PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!
Unless you are a math brainiac---avoid this book like the plague!!!
(no wonder I purchased this book from Amazon reseller for $4--the prior user knew it was a piece of junk!!!)

Normally I read books by authors that I know and trust. I am not familiar with author Jim Horsley. I was hesitant in buying and reading his book. I did buy his book and have read his book--I am glad I did. The content of the book kept me moving through the book. The way his life is now compared to when he graduated from college is definitely an inspiration to me and I believe his life will inspire others as well.
A book loaded with action and great examples for life........1998-06-26
From the moment I cracked this book open I knew I was in for a great read. The author knows how to grab hold of the reader's attention and keep it throughout. I enjoyed the stories about Horsley's military training and his exploits in VietNam. The book is loaded with all the testosterone things most guys only dream of doing. The writing of the book gives the reader a way of living vicariously thourgh Jim Horsley as he navigates his A-6 Intruder through the triple-A fire of VietNam. The extreme concentration necessary to land a jet on an aircraft carrier. And, probably my favorite stories were of those while Horsley was a member of the Blue Angels. I think every guy wants to be a Blue Angel and perform some of the incredible manuevers they do. This book gives you an inside look at what it takes to be a Blue Angel and just how good these men are. But, the book is about more than just guy-stuff. It gives a person a great example of how life can be rewarding even when you are not the envy of most people. It shows that a relationship with God and your family are the two most important things in a person's life. Once those relationships have been cemented, then it becomes eaiser to help those around us and make a difference in someone else's life.I was able to relate easily with many of his experiences in coming to know the Lord. The "mistake of going to church" was dead-on, as well as many other things he encounters on his trip to being saved. This book has inspired me to re-assess my own life and what God has in store for me. It is also helping me look for someone for whom I can make a differnce in their life. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to get an inside look at one of the greatest jobs in the world: Being a Blue Angel. But, more importantly, this book and it's author set an excellent example for people to follow. I strongly encourage this book be added to your collection.

Before and After Zachariah: A Family Story About a different Kind of Courage.......2005-07-09
Fern Kupfer captures the essence of raising a child with special needs. She expresses all the mixed emotions, including anger and rage, that most families in this situation wish to express, but fear what others will think of them, if they do. Our society has told parents that raising a child with special needs can be done, and done well. Parents are often told that they have been specially chosen by a higher power to carry out this noble task. Fern Kupfer questions all those platitudes. She and her husband are doggedly committed to doing all they can for their child, and she realistically examines the effects this has on them as a couple, and a family as a whole.
This book should be required reading for all individuals working with children and families with special needs. This book would help many families in this situation understand that ALL of their feelings are normal,and that only they can make the best decision for their child and family, and not a society that shows little regard for individuals in this situation.
I applaud Fern and her husband for their courage to do what they believe is best for Zachy and the family.
A Good, Realistic Picture of a Child w/Multiple Challenges.......2000-09-01
The world was first introduced to Zachariah in a 1980 article of "Redbook" magazine. Fern Kupfer writes with a clear, clean, crisp and very direct style that is sure to reach all readers.
In more recent years, her severely developmentally delayed son's progress has been updated in this book. It made the reader feel somewhat bonded to the Kupfers (Fern Kupfer has written some delightful fictional stories that have appeared in "Redbook" and other magazines) and all the more interested in the approaches used to teach and raise this perpetual infant.
Zachariah's older sister, Gabi, provides comic relief. Bright and verbal, Gabi possesses a savvy that shows up at a very early age. Wonderfully original, Gabi is never at a loss to express herself and her mixed feelings about her brother. One does sense that Gabi feels a real loss. Her brother is on the developmental plane of an infant and most likely will remain an infant for the rest of his life. She is funny, lovable and unflinchingly honest in her assessments. It is through Gabi that one gets an even clearer picture of life with a loved one who is severely developmentally delayed.
Some years have passed since the latest update on Zachariah's progress. The residential program in Iowa where we last checked in with Zachariah sounded like a wonderfully humane place and one where persons living as perpetual infants got good, loving care and full protection.
An important and rarely-heard perspective.......2000-02-23
As the sister of a profoundly retarded young man, I recommend this book to anyone related to or otherwise close to a person whose mental functioning is severely impaired. While there is much material available on the mildly and moderately retarded, few books are written about the lives of the severely and profoundly retarded and their families. Fern Kupfer tells her family's story well, and by including quotations from many other parents of severely retarded children, she also puts that story into perspective. Her family's decision to place Zachariah in residential care was not made lightly or easily, and those who are struggling with their choices in caring for their relatives will find this book compassionate and helpful, as well as refreshingly honest. This book is also an important reminder to all that while the vast majority of retarded people can be "mainstreamed" with success, a significant minority do need a level of lifetime care that is extraordinarily difficult for a family to provide.
If I ruled the world, every parent would have to read this!!.......1999-07-23
This book is especially helpful and insightful for those of us who have handicapped children, but I really believe every mom or dad could learn from it. Although the "I'm so glad it's you and not me" phrase is thrown at us "special" parents way too often, there's some truth to the fact that most parents never have to deal with anything that remotely comes close to the things that happen daily when a family includes a disabled child. I especially appreciated the stories in the book from other parents of disabled children. Ms. Kupfer hit it right on the mark when she brought up the issue about "accepting" her child's disability. I wish the therapists and care providers and docs could get hold of that concept and really understand it. Awesome, wonderful book. It's old, but still good -- and very applicable in our society today that is pushing to do away with institutions for the disabled. What has always made our country great is our freedoms and our wonderful ability to choose out of all the opportunities available to us. Some would take this choice (to make use of institutions) away and call it a step in the right direction. They are sadly mistaken. Read this book and you will not be disappointed.

This book has a slow start. At first I wasn't sure how the two characters were supposed to be interacting with eachother. However, if you hang in there, the book does pick up, and it all comes together. It is a good read altogether. It is not scary for younger kids either.

A "must read".......2001-04-12
While reading this book, I often had to stop to read passages (even entire chapters) to my husband...I just had to share! It tells in an engaging way about life in a place I can only imagine...the armchair traveller will just get completely absorbed in this description of life far away. It's funny and extremely well-written. His "Don't Let the Goats Eat the Loquat Trees" should be read first for maximum enjoyment.
Funny yet inspiring.......2000-04-29
After reading Dr Hales first book - Don't let the goats eat the loquat trees, I couldn't wait to read this book. The reality of his adventures and the honesty of his faith made me long to return to Nepal. Being willing to forgo the luxuries of America, Dr Hale was led to serve in Nepal, raise a family and be a Christian witness to the people. The style of writing was quite enjoyable and the content real, so easy to imagine being right there with him. I could only hope for another book of his.
