Book Description
"The book is readable and well organized. . . . I recommend this book to human resource professionals who are interested in bringing change to their organizations. This book's broader perspective on diversity provides insights that can lead the thoughtful reader toward innovative approaches for recruiting and training organizational members. " --Personnel Psychology "This book provides interesting reading as well as useful insights into managing by using all the human resources in an organization and helping people to learn how to continuously improve and develop. . . . A thought-provoking book that will be of interest to anyone concerned with innovation and organizational learning." --Journal of Managerial Psychology In this stimulating and accessible volume, the authors argue for building learning into the heart of our organizations. The first part of the text looks at people and discusses the diverse knowledge and contributions that different individuals and groups bring, and the importance of appreciating and working with diversity. The second part of the book is concerned with joint practice. Successful innovation occurs only when diverse individuals work effectively in teams and can learn from the outcomes of their actions. The authors explore effective teams, including the interaction of context, tasks, team roles and processes, and learning outcomes. Finally, the authors address knowing and learning as an organizational process. They present their model of this process, including the implications of information technology. They also address the crucial need to encourage development and create conditions where learning and innovation can flourish throughout an organization. Developing the Learning Organization is essential reading for students and professionals in human resources management, organizational psychology, and organizational change and development, as well as for all those concerned with issues of organizational learning and innovation.
Book Description
This book ignites a new understanding of poultry industry abuses. Citing research from poultry industry publications and studies, Davis builds a chilling account of a morally handicapped industry driven over the edge. The techniques and attitudes that produce suffering in chickens and disease in humans are carefully examined.
Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2007-07-31
The author is very knowledgeable about the subject but she sees chickens as human beings which will be a point of view that her readers may not share. However, it is sad and unhealthy that chickens are treated so badly.
Astonishing..........2005-11-11
After reading this marvelous work, I can't help but wonder if imprisoned humans make poisoned license plates. Definitely something which should be researched.
Probably more information than you care to know..........2005-10-07
This book does a very thorough job of being convincing about becoming vegan. The book talks about how chickens are crippled because their skeletons can't keep up with the enormous amounts of flesh they're genetically bred to grow. It talks about how unwanted male chicks are ground up alive as feed, how chicks are carelessly crushed underfoot when loading them, how the chickens uteri are forced out of their bodies to be pecked at by fellow hens because the eggs they bear are too big for their bodies. Even being lacto-ovo vegetarian is contributing to this cruelty because this is what happens so the egg industry can flourish and provide us with cheap eggs. It talks about how hens are de-beaked because they are stressed into cannibalism, they are starved and dehydrated to force them into another laying cycle, and how they are exposed to levels of ammonia that it drives them blind. After reading this book, I have concluded that unless one raises ones own chickens for eggs and meat, there is no way to eat chickens with a confortable conscience. Even ritual killing supposed to be more humane is cruel, letting the chicken bleed itself out in pain and panic. Even if it were not for animal rights, the fact that the chicken carcasses have huge amounts of antibiotics, hormones, cancerous tumors, pus-filled innards...would be enough to convince me that eating the meat does me no good at all, karma or no karma. I've heard it said that cooking something in your toilet is about the same as eating a chicken...after reading this book, I'm inclined to believe what I once thought was just hype.
I would have given this book 5 stars but for the fact that the author doesn't really go into what eating these products over time could do to humans. I think that if she had gone into that, it would probably be more effective at convincing people. After all, nothing better to deterr people from eating too much meat than to tell them it's potentially cancer-causing. Which, considering they say you are what you eat...eating carcasses that had cancerous tumors...
A Compelling Case to Stop Cruelty.......2005-07-17
Karen Davis shows with passion, science, and close-up observations how we take billions of delightful, smart, social animals and put them through Hell each year because we like the taste of their flesh or eggs.
It's all unnecessary and easy to stop. Veggie chicken, either out of the freezer case at your local grocery store, or made from a recipe, tastes like chicken but without the bitter aftertaste of knowing that you've supported severe confinment, mutilations, forced starvations and other cruelties.
If you're thinking about reducing meat consumption, adding more vegetarian dishes into your diet, or just wondering how you can help make the world a more peaceful place, buy this book, and before you're halfway done you'll be saving lives.
(Dr. Davis' book on turkeys is superb, also. It's amazing how we put animals down, and use that as an excuse to make them suffer.)
An Inside Look at Inexcusable Atrocities.......2004-10-07
Dr. Karen Davis postulates "[c]an one regard a fellow creature as a property item, an investment, a piece of meat, an `it,' without degenerating into cruelty and dishonesty towards that creature? Human slavery was brutal. Does anyone really believe that nonhuman slavery operates on a higher plane?"
The first portion of this very important book beckons the reader to view chickens as more than mere food, more than simply an aspect of agribusiness, but rather sentient beings capable of a wide range of emotions not too different from our own. Davis accomplishes this by incorporating various personal stories and anecdotes regarding her own chickens, as well as quotations from other chicken owners and those who have visited slaughter houses and hatcheries first hand.
After making this key point, the reader is treated to the appallingly repulsive goings-on at hatcheries and slaughter houses, as well as other malevolent profanities we humans put chickens through so we can continue to eat "well." Davis describes in excruciating, brutally honest detail the horrid environment in which chickens (particularly egg-laying) spend their lives, in their entirety. This lack of a proper, more naturalized, environment leads to disease and malnutrition in these chickens, as well as "cannibalistic" behavior (in actuality a manifestation of their natural pecking instinct), which in turn lead to hideous vaccination and de-beaking processes. Furthermore, the actual process of slaughter is described in meticulous detail, including electrocution, gassing, and neck-slicing (all of which most chickens are still alive for). In addition, it isn't exactly news that broiler chickens are being genetically "engineered" to have larger breasts in order to enlarge profits, and that these chickens frequently suffer ill effects such as broken legs and orthopedic disorders.
If the atrocities that chickens experience aren't enough to spur the reader into disgusted amazement, Davis points out ill effects for humans as well. For example, uric acid from the fecal matter abundant in the close confines of egg-laying hens releases ammonia into the atmosphere, which has been shown to absorb into the eggs slated for human consumption. Not to mention the illnesses and diseases running rampant in chickens that still find their way onto dinner tables across the globe. Is ignorance really bliss, or would you prefer to be enlightened as to what exactly goes into the chicken contents of canned soup, school lunches, pet food, and chicken nuggets?
By the end of this book, Davis is stating that vegetarianism, or more specifically veganism, is the answer to the aforementioned problems. Though that may seem extreme for most people, Davis does make a thorough and well-researched argument.
Though most of this information is somewhat dated (most data coming from 1995), the issue is no less pertinent. I would, however, be curious to see more recent data. This is a book everyone should read before their next flesh-devouring feast. Indeed, non-human slavery should not operate on a higher plane, and it would seem that there are those who need to be reminded of this.
Book Description
Mystery Women, Volume 3, is the most recent in a series about the changing roles of women in the mystery novel. Volume 3 contains more than 580 series with female sleuths who were introduced during the years 1990-1999. This is an astounding number, barely falling short of the total identified in the first two volumes, which covered one hundred years.
Increasingly, the mystery novel explores major issues of interest to women, considering both the positive and negative impact of changes in status. Volume 3 covers female sleuths from more than a dozen countries, of assorted ages, education and employment, religious beliefs and political ideologies, states of life and historical periods. The authors include both men and women. The focus is on the protagonist, not the writer. The biographies of the women are based on personal reviews of the books in which they appeared.
In order to be included in the survey, a character must have made a substantial appearance in at least two books published between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 2001. Volume 2 in the "Mystery Women" series was nominated for an Agatha Award for non-fiction published in 2002.

Customer Reviews:
Slightly outdated but solid book - more theory than apps.......2000-05-15
As the title indicates, this book has some good, solid papers on wavelets/wavelet analysis. The title is a bit misleading -- the book is very theoretical and few of the papers address how wavelet techniques can be used to solve scientific and engineering problems. This is not to say that the book is not valuable -- it is edited by Chui, an extremely successful organizer of conferences, who has extensive experience writing and editing very good books. It is a mathematician's book.
At the time of its publication, this book was one of the better applications books, the other two comparable applications books were edited by: (1) Combes et al. (2) Ruskai et al.. This book has many more references to relevant works than the Combes and Ruskai books.
Unfortunately, 8 years have passed since the publication of this book, and a lot of progress takes place in the field of wavelets. Some techniques which looked promising 8 years ago did not live up to expectations, and some new ideas with very practical applications are not addressed in this book. This second remark may not be entirely fair since applications of wavelets have become so widespread that it would be impossible for any one book to cover all.
This book does not contain problems to assign for homework. It might be appropriate to use some chapters in the book for supplementary reading. in a graduate course or in an upper division special topics course. Unfortunately, the price is a bit high to make it required reading as a supplementary text for a course.
Some of the the theoretical papers, particularly the first 3 in Section I would not be of interest to applications oriented people since no work has followed from these papers. They are very specialized theoretical works. The papers in Section II cover topics which have become a standard tools in wavelet analysis, e.g., splines, biorthogonal wavelets, multiresolution analysis (MRA).Papers in Section III are a bit outdated. There was a period when wavelets were hyped and people in the research community believed that they could lead to improvements in the solution of PDEs. Unfortunately, few new practical tools have emerged. Only the paper on MRA in section IV may be of interest to a wide audience, but it too is rather theoretical. Sections V VI and VII were intended to cover applications to digital signal processing (DSP). If the primary interest of a reader is DSP, this is the wrong book to purchase in this day and age. Mallat's book: a Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing is far more comprehensive and up-to-date.

Book Description
When North Korean forces invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, Otto Apel was a surgical resident living in Cleveland, Ohio, with his wife and three young children. A year later he was chief surgeon of the 8076th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital constantly near the front lines in Korea.
Immediately upon arriving in camp, Apel performed 80 hours of surgery. His feet swelled so badly that he had to cut his boots off, and he saw more surgical cases in those three and a half days than he would have in a year back in Cleveland.
In addition to his own story, Apel answers the questions anyone interested in a MASH unit would ask: What were the operating conditions like? What was a typical work load? What level of care did patients get? How did the doctors, nurses, and enlisted personnel get along? And, perhaps most obviously, how realistic was the TV series?
Along the way, he tells the history of the MASH and the appalling lack of training received by the newly drafted doctors staffing those units. He also reveals many significant medical innovations in emergency medical care, from advances in arterial repair to the use of blood plasma in the treatment of hemorrhagic shock.
Customer Reviews:
Content makes up for writing.......2006-03-07
It's clear that the author is a doctor and not a writer. The book cries out for editing; writing errors and organizational issues permeate the book. That said, after I got about halfway through these things stopped bothering me. The story made up for it. The reality of the MASH is much more interesting than what's portrayed on the screen. It gave me a new respect for military medicine. If you can make it through the starting chapters it's a great read.
An Excellent Tribute to the M. A. S. H. Units in Korea........2002-12-07
Dr. Appell's book "M. A. S. H.: An Army Surgeon in Korea" is an excellent tribute to the men and women of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals by a veteran surgeon of the 8076TH M . A. S. H. unit. My only complaint is that the book was not a little longer. For any fan of the movie or t. v. series this book is a must-read. Dr. Appell (who was a consultant for the series), tells us what life was really like in a M. A. S. H. unit. The series took some liberties with actual events, but its overall portrayal was fairly accurate-though the series lasted 10 years compared to the three years of the Korean War itself, and the average length of stay for surgeons in a M. A. S. H. was about 8 months. Dr. Appell has written a very interesting book.
Good Read.......2002-06-09
This book is not about the T.V. show M*A*S*H. But the tv show did get many of its episodes from this book. From arterial transplants to make shift clamps these Doctors opened many new doors to the medical world. Chapter 6 "In the O.R." is pretty gruesome. Details of intestinal wounds abdominal wounds and pretty much everything a war could destroy on a body.
But its not all blood and guts. D.R. Apel talks of the korean's who helped around the camp. The use of the white rocks in the compund. Plus his first day at the MASH was spent on his feet for 72 hrs. operating. Amazing.
I would have ggave the book a five star rating but there was a section on a paper the D.R. wrote on arteral repair which IMO took away from the book. It might have worked better at the end of the book.
Nice pictures of procedures and Korea. This book is a must for people who like the TV show and would really like to see what went on in a real MASH outfit during the real Korean war.
"A Hit among hits!".......2000-05-16
All i can say is at the end of this book you will be speachless, this a a timless classic that inspired a spawing fox tv series that is still shown today. I Don't want to give any of the book away so i wont tell you alot, but this book is a very highly recomennded book for those who loved the series and loved the movie (also found on amazon.com). "One of my favorites ever! "
Book Description
The author tells what it's been like to be one-legged for over ten years. After having had chemotherapy, radiation, and amputation, he chose not to have a prosthesis, but to use a wheelchair at home, and crutches there and wherever else he goes. His adaptations to the condition were remarkably easy. They involved many ways to simplify living for the one-legged, some of which would have been useful when he still had two legs. He debunks the common wisdom that "You have to grieve for a leg", and tells about living with Sharlie, his phantom leg. In addition to the disadvantages of having only one leg, he points out a few real advantages of the condition, like no longer having to sort socks into pairs. He has in general enjoyed the "interesting experience" of the title.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but..........2004-05-17
This book was interesting in that it provided a good insight as to how a 'one-legged' person adapted after the amputation. Unfortunately, this book was in serious need of an editor, or at the very least, a copyeditor. Though the material overall is interesting and useful, you have to wade through quite a bit of rambling and repetition to get to it. The 'poems' are nothing more than restatements of the previous paragraphs in fragment form. I did like the drawings; they helped me imagine the positions and assistive devices the author used. And I very much admire the author for what he has gone through! I hate mentioning anything negative about this book, because I do appreciate that the author took the time to share his experience. I just wish he had someone edit the book for errors and conciseness.
As a 23 year old hemipelvectomy survivor (had bone cancer in the pelvis, my right leg and hip were amputated), I did find much of the book to be encouraging. My surgery was four months ago, and yet my physical therapist won't let me try crutches, as he believes a one-legged person should not use them. This book has given me the courage to at the very least try them--as the author shows, you never know what will help you best unless you try. I too have opted not to use a prostetic leg, and I found it refreshing to note that I am not the only one who has chosen that path.
I am very glad the author wrote this book, and I do recommend it to anyone who is one-legged, will soon be one-legged, or knows/cares for someone one-legged.
