As a consultant often tasked with conducting and validating Job Analysis products for management positions, there are a few important points to make about the rapid development approach that Hartley documents in this book. First of all, prior to consulting I was an internal manager like Hartley (who worked internally for the Dell Corporation), and fully appreciate the pressure placed on support personnel to come up with quick and inexpensive solutions to projects.

The result of all this corporate pressure to accomplish more with less while attempting to stay true to basic principles of task identification and analysis is where this book shines. If you already have experience in this area, then this book will be a nice resource on the shelf. Likewise, if you are already familiar with the DACUM model (Developing a Curriculum), then this book is like having a nice discussion between professionals. Imagine Hartley sharing his project experience with you over a latte at Starbucks.

For the same reasons I liked this book, I also hold some important reservations. Hartley's understanding of the validation process is seriously wanting. Instead of validation being accurately represented as a process of quantitative analysis, it apparently means that a task list is valid merely because an incumbent says so. Instead, the reality is that all identified task items are merely salient candidates for analysis. Assuming them to be valid is a wrong-headed conclusion.

Secondly, this book is quite dated (8 years old). There is an assumption made in chapter 3 and elsewhere that surveying, for example, is expensive, difficult, and most of all slow, but none of these accusations are even slightly true in 2007. He also makes it clear that compiling survey data results is simply too cumbersome a process to worry about. This may be true for him personally, but it is bad advice to give others, and holding such an opinion does not make data analysis any less critical to the Job Analysis process.

As such, taking Hartley's advice means that you lose not only statistical power, but real application relevance for the company. Item weighting becomes a shrugging guess as a result, error variances cannot be captured, and the job analysis documentation, once this "JASR" method is followed according to the book, will lack many critical details for assessing anything from comparative compensation profiles to designing effective learning systems and gap analysis studies. Furthermore, the lack of statistical validation means there are potential legal issues.

Anyone who has directed a Job Analysis project realizes some fundamental shortcomings about incumbent data. Just to name one: consider the incumbent selection process. No matter how careful the corporate director or task force coordinator is, there is great bias involved. Often only the best performers are present, or sometimes people whose expertise is actually not as advertised. Even when the incumbent pool is perfect there are a myriad of other issues, from regional differences to actual (but hidden) job expectation variances at different levels and divisions of the organization. This is all fantastic stuff to capture, and it is exactly why the task force process (using a delphi-type technique like DACUM or something similar) is so valuable! But the data should be assumed skewed, and in fact, it almost always is, at least by merit of relative weight and importance. Tasks are often partially true, partially complete, reflective of "what we 'should' do at work" instead of "what we really are doing at work" and it often reflects the objective workplace at a superficial level only. This is why the additional steps such as direct observation and qualitative interviews are so illuminating. Most important of all however, this is also why statistical validation is and always will be a mandatory part of the process that should never be circumvented--a step that Hartley glosses past without realizing the ramifications.

In sum, I enjoyed the book (but disliked the illustrations) and there are some really wonderful tips to capture. I am glad I own it. For projects where time is tight and resources are limited, when job scopes are expected to change rapidly from year to year anyway, and when it is difficult to get experts to take time away from the job, then this is an excellent resource for getting to the 80% mark quickly. My concern is that the remaining 20% is where the real value of the analysis can usually be found. Sometimes, producing something quicker is confused here with the actual goals behind the job analysis product from the beginning.

HR and business managers will find this book useful. It is full of important information and the writing moves along at a good pace. I would recommend its reading to my managers.

This was a great book. It overviews various methods of Job Analysis and compares their value and relevancy. The JASR method is a refreshing, effective alternative to more traditional, cumbersome methods that aren't efficient in todays business environment. This is a quick,easy to read book with a methodology that demystifies job analysis for the beginning practitioner and is appropriate for the seasoned practitioner looking to update their job analysis approach-to the speed of reality today.

The JASR Process.......2000-05-02

I found Darin Hartley's book, "Job Analysis at the Speed of Reality", to be an excellent book. The JASR process is easy to follow and perhaps more importantly, it does not require a great deal of time. I also believe that "Job Analysis at the Speed of Reality" also provides an excellent blueprint for mapping exemplary employee's characteristics and behaviors. These are obviously crutial to an organization's success and the JASR method facilitates the gathering of this information.

Overall this is an excellent read and reference book.

Great resource for those new to job analysis!.......2000-02-14

Easy read and well organized material. The facilitator's guide is useful. I especially liked the evaluation of other job analysis methods. The evaluation list the pros and cons of methods such as DACUM. This helped me cut and paste techniques from several methods which made more sense for my situation.

This book has an overview of diseases for most domestic large animals. I found this text to be too general to be very helpful as a reference guide for folks needing all the details. It does have some decent rule out lists.

Zwillinger's Handbook of Differential Equations.......2000-04-06

This and its predecessor of the late 1980s are the best compendiums of differential equation solution and approximation methods that I have ever seen in terms of (a) comparison of different methods, (b) number of methods compared, (c) description of details of each method, (d) organization such as alphabetizing under each category and categorization of methods, (e) description of and comparison of where each method can be applied in the physical and other sciences, both deterministic and statistical/probabilistic ("stochastic"). This accomplishment cannot be overemphasized from the point of view of Creative Genius - in my opinion, comparing and contrasting and organizing and summarizing data and information are fundamental requirements for creative genius. The book may be intended as a reference book, but it should really be used also as a textbook provided that the teacher overviews the areas and gives some supplementary background and latest results. Both the student and reference user can easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of methods, and I would recommend putting short descriptions of each (1-2 lines on front and 1-2 lines on back) on flash cards to keep them and their relationships fresh in your mind (shuffle the cards, learn them backwards and forwards, learn them alphabetically, in separate categories, then non-alphabetically and in mixed up categories, etc.). I would recommend that future editions list some of the unsolved equations and open research questions in the field.

For anyone that finds differential equations beautiful; for the theoretical scientist in whatever field; this is nearly as indispensable as Abromowitz and Stegun (The Big Ugly Blue Book).

Excellent visual presentation, excellent narrative.......2004-11-05

As the author or co-author of the bulk of the official biography of Sir Winston S. Churchill, few people can be said to approach Sir Martin Gilbert in their knowledge of the man and his life. Here, in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum, Gilbert has produced a wonderful visual record of "His 'Finest Hour' in Photographs."

The book is divided up by years, with each year receiving a brief narrative introduction. It is not a photographic history of the war, and there are few photos of Churchill "off duty" -- to the extent he ever was in those years. But what it sets out to be, it achieves extremely well.

Looking through this volume, I was impressed by the quality of (most of) these photos, and especially impressed by the sharpness and clarity with which they are reproduced here. I admit I have a particular distaste for photo-books with few or insufficient captions, and so I was very pleased to see that Gilbert gives each photo a thorough description, including not only what Churchill is doing in the image, but also naming other key people in the image and often even giving the date on which the photo was taken.

I think this would be an excellent addition to the shelf (or coffee table) of any member of the vast legion of Churchillians around the globe. I have no hesitation in recommending it for the gift list for the Churchillian in your life.

I REALLY LIKED THIS ONE.......2007-02-08

I really liked this one. It tells about the story of a 57 year of man who has Alzheimers,his love of gardening, his wife, son, love of cats,and his Italian family roots. It was a nice story about a man dealing with the disease and his family. I read this book in one night. Well written and a great choice of words. Parts of this book took me back to the old days when he talks of his family.

When it Gets Dark.......2005-03-05

Book illustrates that people with alzheimer's are human. Baggio , an Alzhiemer's victim) takes us on a journey of his life long affair with gardening. This sensitvely chronicles an ordinairy life as being something special. It lets us know that all of our lives are special and to be handled with care. This reader developed a bond with the author through his well chosen words. Worth reading if you are pre-disposed to alzheimer's though family history, have it or know someone who does. This is a delightfully sensitive and artistic book on a dreadful disease. It certainly helps with coping with it.
