I'm a student studying to become a teacher and I used this book to build a lesson plan. I think the concept of how seasons changes is presented in a manner for 2nd or 3rd grader to easily understand. The hands-on demonstration included in the book was also helpful is enforcing the concept of why there are 4 seasons. The additional resource information provided at the back of the book is also a helpful tool for use with modifying your lesson plan to meet various student learning levels. I will keep this book in my library for use when I do become a teacher.

if you have an energetic child like my 5 year old who is always asking why - this is a great book. I got this book around summer soltice when my sun did not understand why he is going to bed when it is so bright outside. By doing the "experiment" with an orange and a flashlight, I think he understands why we have seasons.

When you touch the cover of the book, you feel the recent trend of regression. I bet you will and you should. It covers most of recent topics in 90's. ARC is a superb software and it provides so many excellent features and tools to look into the real aspects of data analysis. It is also easy enough for beginners to follow the steps.

I tried this for the textbook for my class last semester. My students loved it so much that some of them decided to pursue their career as a statistician.

But many statisticians don't appreciate what is the real value of the book. Too bad.

mainly a book about Arc, not applied regression........2000-12-19

Basicly, this textbook is too confined in the context of the software Arc. And I think this software isn't useful at all beyond the textbook. This textbook is not well-organized logically, and it doesn't state well the reasons of some methods and algorithms and how they come, and it has some concluson that are built upon nothing. Besides, it takes a lot of time and efforts to sort through the many useless words, sometime you just feel that the authors are just trying to increase the volume. There are some good methods, but the textbook state it in a way that after some time, you won't even think of what they are about. I think it should be more general, more reasonable, more well-organized and clearly-narrated.

Anyway, it might be good for a beginner of regression.

I used Cook/Weisberg's book to teach a required graduate data analysis class. Students found the text easy to understand. In previous classes they had used S-Plus; they raved about how easy ARC was to use --- especially since they could download it for free and use it after graudation without licensing. I found the statistics and mathematics clearly presented and the examples useful. Several of the students used ARC for the data analysis for their theses.

This is a great teaching book with a fabulous software package supporting it, by two of the best statisticians in the world.

I disagree strongly with the previous reviewer: this is much much more than a software manual. It is first a world class regression text, and secondly it supports the new methods with first-rate freeware. Who could complain?

regression emphasizing graphics.......2000-08-08

Dennis Cook and Sandy Weisberg have written a number of excellent books on regression analysis (jointly and separately). The most recent Wiley books attempt to provide an integrated approach to regression analysis based on graphical methods. Cooks other book deals with the theory. This one is more detailed with examples and is more applications oriented but the philosophy of the two books is the same.

Good coverage of a large topic.......2000-05-07

Cook and Weisberg provide good coverage of such a large topic. Unlike Weisberg's Applied Linear Regression book, this book goes into more theoretical detail. However, the mathematical aspects are left to the end of each chapter so the reader that's not interested in details will not have to wade through pages of equations.

NOT about the real American Civil War.......2006-11-21

This book was not exciting, nor is it realistic of antebellum life in Virginia. From the title, you would think that the book would be about the War Between the States and about Robert E. Lee. It is neither. It is what an Englishman thinks it might have been like to be in the South before the war begins, but he doesn't know. The research, if there was any research, was not done well. Because most of the book takes place away from any battles, it is a very tedious, boring, and painful book to read. There are much better books to describe life as it was in the war, such as Across Five Aprils or The Red Badge of Courage. If you want good books from a Southern perspective, I recommend Iron Scouts of the Confederacy (for historical fiction) or The History of the Confederate States. I asked my kids to read this book for history, and when they complained, I read it myself. I'm sorry that I ever put them through this, and I will check more carefully the next time I think about asking them to read a book by G.A. Henty.

Wonderful history lesson of the Civil War.......2001-03-27

An extra bonus in this Henty book is that it includes both the English preface and the American one, which Henty wrote to the `lads' who would read this book. In With Lee in Virginia Vincent Wingfield is the main character, one who lives on a plantation run by slaves, but who is strongly against being cruel to slaves. When he clashes with the overseer over Pearson having whipped a slave, Vincent never imagines it will cause such trouble. Soon, though, Vincent gets involved in the fate of the slave he saved, Tony. Will Vincent be able to help the man escape from the wicked Jackson? What about Tony's wife, who Jackson is selling for revenge? This book draws you right in plantation life in the 18hundreds, you will feel happy with the knowledge that `your' slaves are safe, and will never even consider that you are doing wrong by keeping slaves. Vincent enlists as a volunteer after Virginia secedes and accomplishes many deeds of bravery. This is just another in a long line of thrilling books writing by George Alfred Henty, don't miss reading a single one!!!

Superb!.......2000-04-18

This book is definitely one of Mr. Henty's masterpieces. It gives a clear view of the South's situation and why the Civil War was fought. I highly enjoyed this book, both for its content and the way history is mingled with a gripping plot. I can't tell you too much because I might spoil it, but it is about a young Southern man who joins the Confederate army and distinguises himself through his many adventures.

I really loved this book written from a rare Confederate view point. The author beautifully portrayed virtues such as honor and courage in the young hero, Vincent. They say these books are written for teenage boys, but I'm a twelve year old girl and I couldn't put down the book for three days. It is probably won of the most exciting books I've ever read.

Good but not the best.......2003-04-29

This a moving account of a family's struggle to deal with a grown son's head injury, but it suffers from a lack of judicious editing. There is a bit too much repetition and inclusion of unimportant details that detract from the central, compelling story of their son's recovery. I found myself frustrated by descriptions of homes and meals that had little or no bearing on this central story and its powerful message. I think people read these books to learn more about brain injury or to be inspired by the courage and perseverance of the brain injured person. This book accomplishes those goals, but I have read other memoirs that do a better job and make for more focused accounts of the pitfalls and triumphs of the brain injured and their loved ones.

The book was a moving example of what humanity & family should be. Makes me believe that real life heros are still out there
