    Book Description

"Oregon Viticulture" is a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide to successful strategies and methods for commercial vineyards in Oregon that will be extremely valuable both for current winegrape growers and for prospective growers.

The volume is unique in its approach of combining the expertise and experience of university researchers with that of professional grape growers and winemakers—most chapters were written by at least two authors with different perspectives.

"Oregon Viticulture" is the successor to the popular "Oregon Winegrape Growers Guide," with both broader coverage of more topics and greater depth of coverage than the earlier book. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the characteristics of a vineyard site, matching grape varieties to the site, and selecting and adjusting the most appropriate management practices for each unique site.

The structure and physiology of grapevines is concisely summarized, and viticulture principles are introduced throughout the book. Standard production practices are described, and separate chapters discuss sustainable viticulture practices and organic grape growing. In addition, "Oregon Viticulture" addresses important business management topics not usually found in similar books, including economics, marketing and contracts, compliance with government regulations, and labor management.

Commercial winegrape growers, students, researchers, serious home viticulturists, and individuals with a strong interest in Northwest wines and the wine industry will find "Oregon Viticulture" to be a valuable reference and easy-to-use textbook and guide.

    Very practical and well written
The book displays a passion which seeks to inform without predjudice.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference for any location.......2006-07-04

While there is information in this collection of articles that is specific to Oregon viticulture, there is also a good bit of information that is useful for any viticultural area. The sections on financial planning, site preparation, trellising, and labor were very useful. The diagrams on climate for Oregon are easy to read and done in color with a nice glossy finish. There is a good section on organic methods, but it mostly deals with certification, and not with actual organic methods. Oregon is probably one of the most promising areas for organic viticulture, and it is a little bit of a disappointment that this topic was not covered in more detail.

And although I am in the Northeast, I find this book to be a useful reference, and my copy is starting to show some wear and tear.

Very helpful for anyone thinking about growing grapes for revenue in the Oregon grape growing region.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but lacks some information for those touring.......2003-04-05

I thought this book was a beautiful book, but lack some information that is useful for those wanting to tour. The book is in order by geograhic location which is very useful and there is good information about the wineries, such as what they produce and a bit of history about the vineyards. But, I found it is not a great touring book. There is no mention of directions to the wineries, there are maps, but having done much wine touring in the Northwest directions are needed. There was also no hours of operation listed for any wineries, this would also be another useful piece of information for planning your tour. It would have also been nice to have some information about the area regarding hotel accomodations and food. My conclusion is if you are a Northwest wine lover, which we are, it is a great coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars An amazingly thorough look at an emerging wine region.......2002-05-20

This book offers all levels of wine lovers great information. While the geographically-organized chapters are heavy on trechnical topics, the author really tries to explain the reasons each area makes wine and what influences its taste, without talking down to the reader. It also makes a super resource for someone who seeks a touring guide. Every producer in each region is profiled, too, with comprehensive contact information, making planning a wine tour easy. The photos of both winemakers and vineyards are also wonderful. For anyone who loves NW wines or wants to understand them better, this book can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Not just some fluffy picture book.......2002-02-08

I love this book. It has inspired to venture out to the Pacific Northwest and go on a tasting tour of my own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book by a thoughtful, sincere individual.......1998-09-18

As a home winemaker, I've had the pleasure in the past to make wine from grapes grown by the author. Prior to reading the book, Lars had impressed me as an inquisitive, well-read and knowledgeable individual who cared very much about people and all living things in nature. His open & honest narration was truly a pleasure to read. In some respects, it's almost like a diary.

                      Modern Real and Complex Analysis

Thorough, well-written, and encyclopedic in its coverage, this text offers a lucid presentation of all the topics essential to graduate study in analysis. While maintaining the strictest standards of rigor, Professor Gelbaum's approach is designed to appeal to intuition whenever possible. Modern Real and Complex Analysis provides up-to-date treatment of such subjects as the Daniell integration, differentiation, functional analysis and Banach algebras, conformal mapping and Bergman's kernels, defective functions, Riemann surfaces and uniformization, and the role of convexity in analysis. The text supplies an abundance of exercises and illustrative examples to reinforce learning, and extensive notes and remarks to help clarify important points.

                        Book Description

The subject of real analysis is unified in this modern text by several central concepts, in particular the notion of absolute continuity. Absolute continuity, a major underlying idea in formulating and proving the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FTC), the Lebesgue Dominated Convergence Theorem, and the Radon--Nikodym Theorem, is essential in dealing with problems of switching limits and of understanding the amazing inverse relationship between integration and differentiation (FTC). Also, it leads to fundamental notions and results in terms of weak convergence of measures, a topic generally not treated in standard real variable texts. The topics are examined in depth and in a way that is valuable not only from a theoretical point of view, but in a way that presents a sophisticated array of tools with which to deal with a host of difficult practical problems. Key features: Historical remarks and perspective on the development of real variables. Important role of Vitali, as responsible for many "firsts" in the subject as well as for "modern" proofs given almost 100 years ago * Covers all basic results in real variables, showing many possible generalizations and both standard and nonstandard examples * Comprehensive bibliography that contains both original works of the founding fathers of real analysis as well as relevant modern ones * Expanded material on distribution theory and the Riesz Representation Theorem to present a more unified theory of measure and integral * A careful treatment of symmetric perfect sets is used as a foundation for the introduction of fractals and analysis on them --- a subject that has emerged in recent years * An extensive array of exercises, ranging from the routine to more challenging problems * Comprehensive index. The book may be used not only for graduate courses in real analysis but also for advanced independent study, or as a source of problems for more advanced student projects.

                            Book Description

Semiconcavity is a natural generalization of concavity that retains most of the good properties known in convex analysis, but arises in a wider range of applications. This text is the first comprehensive exposition of the theory of semiconcave functions, and of the role they play in optimal control and Hamilton-Jacobi equations.

The first part covers the general theory, encompassing all key results and illustrating them with significant examples. The latter part is devoted to applications concerning the Bolza problem in the calculus of variations and optimal exit time problems for nonlinear control systems. The exposition is essentially self-contained since the book includes all prerequisites from convex analysis, nonsmooth analysis, and viscosity solutions.

....one of the worst of which is that the Confederacy was a white, Anglo-Saxon monolith. The truth is that the Confederacy pioneered the idea of giving blacks and women positions of authority [the Matron Law], placed Jews in positions of power, and put General's stars on a Mexican. And, we had the first American Indian General; this wonderful book is his story.

Stand Watie was born in Georgia in 1806, and went west on the Trail of Tears. In Oklahoma, he became a rich, powerful, slave-owning rancher. [Yes, Indians owned slaves; so did Jews, Mexicans, and, surprise, Blacks]. He also gained both friends and enemies; as one of the two rival Principal Chiefs of the Cherokee Nations, he headed the Mixed Blood faction, which some thought got along a little too well with the government. [The other Chief, John Ross, was also a rich slave-owning rancher, living in a mansion, married to a white woman; he had less Indian blood than Watie]. Sort of like the Pure Bloods and the Mud-Bloods in the Harry Potter stories, only this wasn't funny........

When the Civil War came, both sides wanted the Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes in present day Oklahoma; enter another of the few Civil War characters who provide a measure of comic relief, Brigadier General Albert Pike, sent by the Confederacy to recruit the Indians; he did a pretty good job, too, capitalizing on the very real beef that the Indians had with the US. Pike's Civil War career is a minor footnote to a long, productive life. Today, he is best known as the philosopher of Scottish Rite Masonry. Pike resigned in late 1862 [Maybe---another topic], and was replaced by the more conventional, but less colorful, Douglas Cooper. Cooper said that Pike was either disloyal to the Confederacy, or was insane; Masons know which was the case.....

Oklahoma saw action all thru the war; the battles aren't as well known as the eastern ones, but the troops gave just as much, and the dead were just as dead. Stand Watie was a hero of Wilson's Creek, and proved to be an effective leader the whole way. Indeed, this was a theatre of operations where the Confederacy remained viable right to the end. Stand Watie was rewarded with General's stars in 1864, and was the very last Confederate General to stack arms.

This book is a true classic, a well written account of a part of the Civil War that most people don't even know existed.. Many thanks to Mr. Cunningham, and many thanks to the University of Oklahoma Press for making it available.

Well written chronicle of one of the South's finest soldiers.
Too little has been introduced about the struggle between North and South in the Nations. This book is the best I have read on the subject.
Watie and his gallant band are well represented in their struggle to defend their families and save their homes from ruin during the Yankee invasion.

I believe this book is a very inspiring book that tells you how one lives its life. It gives me a very vivid picture of what the author is writing about, It is like a book come alive, and it's like a movie in some way. I am very proud of this man who sees an opporunity and takes it and achieves it. I can see a deaf man who can do anything, Not even blood stops this man. Death overflows this book, I can see the smoke of the dark cloud come out of this book and it feels scary but is also a very inspirating book which is full of true scenes that happened to him. I recommend anyone to read this book. It may encourage young kids to achieve their dreams and not to let anything stop them. Who can be an Emt like this man and face alot of discrimation? I wonder who can stand this much?
