1 out of 5 stars More basic than title suggests.......2000-06-15

The title of this book is a little misleading in that you might assume it's more about the design of an accounting system as opposed to an introduction to Access. A better title would be, Introduction to Access 97 Using Simple Accounting Examples. The first half of the book introduces Access to beginners and includes no useful accounting information, while the second half discusses how to create an accounting database and the accompanying forms and reports. The sample database barely scratches the surface of what even a hot dog vendor would require. For example, the very core of any accounting system, the general ledger, is not designed into the database. In fact, you won't find any entries in the index under general ledger -- a glaring omission for a book on accounting. Too many pages are devoted to listing tedious, step-by-step instructions for creating the simple tables, forms and reports. The authors would have done better to do this only for the first example and then refer the reader to the accompanying CD in later chapters. They could have used the newly acquired space to develop a more complete database along with a higher level discussion. Somebody with no accounting experience, no programming experience and no Access experience may find this book useful, but anybody who needs to build a real accounting system will be frustrated.

3 out of 5 stars Finally an access book covering accounting systems.......1999-12-27

Finally a book that doesn't use useless access work-throughs like student databases to teach microsoft access. This book is very basic though. This book is what you would expect to find in an introductory accounting system course taught at most colleges. It covers all of the basic accounting cycles but leaves you with a lot of issues to figure out on your own. The chapters seem to be repetitive in that the book never moves on to more complicated issues such as creating modules. You will only see very basic macros in only one chapter. The book doesn't even attempt tell you how to tie all of the cycles into a general ledger and therefore ignores the creation of financial statements. So at the completion of the book all you have are bits and pieces of an accounting system. I question whether the authors have ever developed a full blown accounting system. If they have I hope they will expand the coverage of the book in future editions. If there were any other books on access and accounting I might not recommend this book. However, if you are a beginner to financial systems this book may get you started.

2 out of 5 stars Dashed Hopes.......2000-07-08

A great concept for a book. However, I was disappointed. I had hoped to find something that would address the issues faced in building a double entry accounting system in Access.

Instead I found something that missed the mark in terms of Access -- Access 97 Power Programming, Access Bible, and the VBA books by Getz et al. hit this mark much better -- and missed the mark in terms of accounting -- no discussion of how to integrate a chart of accounts, the authors dismissed the need for double-entry bookings and never developed it, and then the book only addressed a couple of the accounting cycles.

I awarded two stars because the book would have been a good book if I were just learning what a table was in a relational database and I had an avid interest in accounting and only wanted to get a feel for what the other book written by these two authors by almost the same title was like.

However, I do applaud the attempt for someone with an accounting background to write a book that might help others better understand accounting and apply it using an application that is so readily avaliable.

Anyone who works for a big corporation has probably had to sit through a mandatory workshop on diversity. Every year businesses and governments lavish millions of dollars on consultants who promise to remove discrimination from the workplace. In this comprehensive profile, Lynch shows that while some of the concepts introduced by the diversity industry are worthwhile, far too often these so-called experts do more harm than good. And their influence can be downright pernicious when they find racism, sexism, and homophobia where none exists. This book belongs in the must-read category for human resource professionals.

    Book Description

The latest fad in American businesses and universities is "diversity training." Most are familiar with the format: employees or students sit in a circle with their co-workers or classmates and engage in a variety of strange exercises. They role play, talk about their feelings, confront their prejudices. It all seems rather harmless, if a bit silly.

Whose idea was all of this, anyway? Where did diversity training come from, and where is it going? Frederick Lynch spent five years researching the diversity business from the inside -- interviewing its principals, attending numerous sensitivity seminars, and studying institutions, such as the University of Michigan and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which have transformed themselves into virtual showcases of diversity.

However innocuous this movement appears from the outside, Lynch finds that it is much more than it seems. Corporations, government offices, and colleges spend tens of millions of dollars annually to hire outside diversity consultants, who promise to turn these institutions into utopian meccas; in the institution that has learned to "value diversity," all tension between men and women, blacks and whites, gays and straights will be purged. But when these grandiose promises inevitably fall flat, the diversity merchants are expert in finding scapegoats. Either management didn't spend enough money on programs, or the organization was not aggressive enough in pursuing "non-white male" applicants, or there was a "white male backlash" against the inclusion of minorities and women in the institution.

Indeed, the diversity industry cites no studies or other evidence to back up its dubious marketing claims. Some diversity consultants allege that pursuing diversity enhances a company's bottom line. Others take an even more cynical approach, declaring a bogus moral authority by portraying their business as the heir to the civil rights movement. Lynch persuasively shows how both of these postures work in concert to hoodwink thousands of American managers and CEOs into spending scarce resources on diversity patent medicines. This exhaustively researched, readable book effectively exposes the self-righteous, greedy, and ultimately ineffectual underside of the diversity business.

just being a white male makes me want to die. Man it sure is depressing

    5 out of 5 stars Aughhhh!.......1999-10-24

So cowardly selfish white males want Women and minorities to suffer poverty and oppression; so what else is new??? Why do white males think that they "deserve" priviledge, while everyone else must suffer?? Why, why? Oh well, *they're going to lose in the end* Hah!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent view inside the belly of the beast!.......1998-11-07

Frederick Lynch is brave. As a former zombie who mechanically followed the Politically Correct guidelines of the "PC Party" I found Lynch to be incredibly fair in his delivery. Lynch reports on the moderate, thoughtful, and restrained among diversity trainers as well as those who are quite good and those who are extremely naughty.

Naughty is a real understatement and I'm being nice to the Stalinists within the far left-wing PC Party, but as Lynch has written, many careers have been lost over just being honest.

Bravo Mr. Lynch; you've hit the target spot on. Visit more college campuses, especially the division of "Student Services", "Student Affairs", "Student Development", etc. and you'll find a whole host of very enthusiastic PC Party Police (paid by the state) who will not listen to anything outside PC Party dogma.

PS - come visit soon; we need reinforcements!

This is a great read for anyone interested in old farm equipment. The only problem was that I recognized too many of the pieces from my childhood and started realizing how old I am.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book on Agricultural Machinery & Mechanization.......1999-11-09

    C. H. Wendel's Encyclopedia of American Farm Implements & Antiques is a first-rate work. The illustrations are exceptional, and the scope impressive. Wendel documents the machinery of manufacturing giants and the lesser-known manufacturers from the middle nineteenth century to the middle twentieth century. If you need to identify a machine or manufacturer Wendel's book ought to be your first source.

4 out of 5 stars The collector in our family loves this book!.......1999-09-06

I bought this book as a gift for my father, who collects antique farm tools and tractors, has done his own restorations, and goes to antique shows all the time. I have no higher praise than this: when he settles in for the night, he gets in his favorite chair and opens that book. He may read it for hours, or browse a few pages, but it's his favorite reading material.

5 out of 5 stars Most authoritative guide to old farming equipment EVER !.......1999-08-30

Once again, Charles Wendel shows that he is the undisputed master author of obscure antique farm implements and tractors.Wendel shows old sales brochure engravings of everything from hog oilers to corn shellers and hay loft pulleys. From feed grinders to hay tedders, and EVERYTHING in between.A MUST READ if you want a guide to antique farm implements from the 1800's through the 1950's.

It's hard to find info on old farm machinery. I especially liked the close-up illustrations of wooden windmills

Astrobiology is a very broad interdisciplinary field covering the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe, as well as the design and implementation of missions for solar system exploration. A review covering its complete spectrum has been missing at a level accessible even to the non-specialist.
The last section of the book consists of a supplement, including a glossary, notes, and tables, which represent highly condensed `windows' into research ranging from basic sciences to earth and life sciences, as well as the humanities.
These additions should make The New Science of Astrobiology accessible to a wide readership: scientists, humanists, and the general reader will have an opportunity to participate in one of the most rewarding activities of contemporary culture.

              Book Description

For thirty-three-year-old Mohammed al-Rehaief, this decision -- whether to risk his life and everything he held dear to save Private First Class Jessica Lynch, an American soldier he did not know -- was more than the everyday reckoning with death that permeates wartime. It was the culmination of a life spent at odds with the repressive regime that held his country.

Mohammed's story is the tale of what it was like to come of age in a society where violence and betrayal were everyday events, where one in five adult males worked for the state's security apparatus, where a president-for-life demanded absolute loyalty and adulation. Despite his affluent upbringing and a well-connected uncle, Mohammed was hardly sheltered from the surreal cruelties of Iraq. He was arrested and beaten for owning a satellite dish. His young daughter lost a lung to misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery. An idolized cousin was hanged for joining an Islamic political group. A favorite teacher was carted away for making subversive statements and was never seen again.

Yet even as he navigates a culture tarnished by brutality and corruption, Mohammed also reveals unexpected sides of Iraq, scenes of surprising tenderness and stubborn generosity. He writes with insight and humor about the Iraqi schools, the vagaries of its divorce law, the poignant dynamic between its fathers and sons -- between tradition and jolting change.

As Mohammed offers his powerful perspective on themost publicized story of this controversial war, he emerges as an unlikely hero, a complex and charming character whose values transcend ideology: honor, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the sanctity of human life.

5 out of 5 stars We Now Know: Jessica Lynch .......2007-04-17

Five stars for bravado. The Guardian reported on the astonishing faked rescue of Jessica Lynch as long ago as May 2003 [...]
including the fact that military producers were inspired by the story line and production techniques in Jerry Bruckheimer's fictional "Black Hawk Down." It has been clear for nearly four years that Al-Rehaief's reward for his part in the staged rescue was asylum in the US and a big book contract. Hey--knowing how grim the situation in Iraq has become--how the American war has devastated civil society and led to a civil war--wouldn't you do the same thing as Mr. Al-Rehaief?

If I taught journalism classes, I would use this book as an example of how effectively governments have learned to use media to hoodwink citizens.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome with very little J.L. in it.......2005-06-11

This book was an extraordinary look at the life of an Iraqi citizen and the trials he went through before he found JL in the hospital and what he and his family went through after. For those who don't think very highly of JL, you won't read much about her in here. It was a very fast read and hard to put down. Kudos to the author for putting his life and the lives of his entire family on the line to save an American life.

              4 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2004-06-01

So many reviews seem to center around whether the events were true or not or with they agree with Lynch's account. (Their paths only cross for a matter of minutes in the book so I don't know how much there is to dispute. Only a 3rd party witness could confirm.) I can say about the book that...
              - It was hard to put down.
              - It was more about the author's life than her rescue. I enjoyed this intimate look at an Iraqi's family life as much as the rescue.
              - It seemed at times too fantastic to be true but that may be simply because my everyday life is a cozy one in America compared to the author's in Iraq.
              - Some of the atrocities are hard to read about. I don't think this would be appropriate reading for young children.

5 out of 5 stars Destined To Be a Classic.......2003-11-27

This book is destined to be a classic, in several genres. If you start reading it, be sure you can afford the time to read it all the way through -- it's hard to set down. The opening is intense, yet the reader's hope that that level might be sustained is exceeded -- the story just keeps getting more gripping.

It's an adventure story, history, humor, sociology, a spiritual journey, and a patriotic work all together (it'll make you proud to be an American).

Mr. Al-Rehaief has done more single-handedly to redeem the Arab culture than all of the rest combined.

5 out of 5 stars Stranger Than Fiction.......2003-11-24

Being a Shiite Moslem, Mr. Mohammed Odeh Al-Rehaief has been a first-hand witness to savagery throughout his life. In his home city of Nasiriya, he had been an attorney, and was a wealthy man whose extended family owned properties and businesses. Yet, this did not shield him from the corruption and brutality of Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Who would ever have imagined that an Iraqi citizen would knowingly risk losing everything, including his own life and the lives of his family, in order to save one soldier; a soldier whose country was then engaged in bombing his city to pieces. Here, however, we are forced to believe it, simply because we know that it is true.

It has been pointed out that Mr. Al-Rehaief is given but brief mention in her own book, but the fact is that Pfc Jessica Lynch does express that she will be forever grateful to him. That she does not recall the events as he describes them should come as no surprise, since she was barely conscious of anything except pain during her captivity. By Pfc Lynch's own admission, it is unlikely that she would be alive today if it had not been for the efforts of this Iraqi civilian, and his success in reaching the US Marines, stationed outside the city as they continued their attack.

Maybe it is through his family that we can glean some insight into the character of Mr. Al-Rehaief and where his strong moral values originate: As the book ends, the rest of his family, headed by his father, the son of a sheikh, are waiting in international limbo, not knowing what will happen to them next. They have lost everything. Yet I detect no sentiment of regret, complaint or accusation in their descriptions of the hardships caused by the loss of their entire way of life. Such unselfishness seems unfathomable, but again we are forced to believe it, simply because it is true.

              Book Description

"Noble Conspirator" is the biography of Florence S. Mahoney (1899-), one of the driving forces behind the rapid growth of the National Institutes of Health in the three decades after World War II. Her crowning achievement was her almost single-handed creation of the Institute on Aging. As a close friend of presidents, members of Congress, and other influential citizens, Mahoney made her home a forum for public policy discussion. The book offers a unique insider's view into both the history of American medicine during this critical period and the workings of the American system of government.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman For All Seasons.......2001-12-11

Long before Ralph Nader and Common Cause became successful public advocates, Florence Mahoney worked for decades behind the scenes in Washington to shape federal policy on children's health issues and medical research. Her influence extended from the years just after World War II to the last years of the 20th century, through Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and her legacy today includes the United States National Institutes of Health. While raising two sons, she developed the intimate dinner party to a fine art of political influence, always fighting for federal assistance aimed at curing and preventing disease among children and adults alike. A fascinating biography of a woman who deserves to be known much better than she is.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Florence Mahoney is truly a heroine to remember.......2001-12-09

Noble Conspirator: Florence S. Mahoney And The Rise Of The National Institutes Of Health is the compelling biography of a singularly remarkable woman and her decades of unpaid advocacy for governmental biomedical research. Her legacy that is with us to this day is the National Institutes of Health, or NIH. Noble Conspirator is filled with anecdotes, courage, and the growth of the fledgling NIH into a gigantic complex with an annual budget of $16 billion in the new millennium. Noble Conspirators is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of medical research in America, political success stories of nonprofit lobbying, or biographies of women who helped to shape American society into what it is today. Ms. Florence Mahoney is truly a heroine to remember.
