Dashed Hopes.......2000-07-08
Instead I found something that missed the mark in terms of Access -- Access 97 Power Programming, Access Bible, and the VBA books by Getz et al. hit this mark much better -- and missed the mark in terms of accounting -- no discussion of how to integrate a chart of accounts, the authors dismissed the need for double-entry bookings and never developed it, and then the book only addressed a couple of the accounting cycles.
I awarded two stars because the book would have been a good book if I were just learning what a table was in a relational database and I had an avid interest in accounting and only wanted to get a feel for what the other book written by these two authors by almost the same title was like.
However, I do applaud the attempt for someone with an accounting background to write a book that might help others better understand accounting and apply it using an application that is so readily avaliable.

The Diversity Machine: The Drive to Change the "White Male Workplace"
Manufacturer: Transaction Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0765807319 |
Amazon.com
Anyone who works for a big corporation has probably had to sit through a mandatory workshop on diversity. Every year businesses and governments lavish millions of dollars on consultants who promise to remove discrimination from the workplace. In this comprehensive profile, Lynch shows that while some of the concepts introduced by the diversity industry are worthwhile, far too often these so-called experts do more harm than good. And their influence can be downright pernicious when they find racism, sexism, and homophobia where none exists. This book belongs in the must-read category for human resource professionals.Book Description
The latest fad in American businesses and universities is "diversity training." Most are familiar with the format: employees or students sit in a circle with their co-workers or classmates and engage in a variety of strange exercises. They role play, talk about their feelings, confront their prejudices. It all seems rather harmless, if a bit silly.
Whose idea was all of this, anyway? Where did diversity training come from, and where is it going? Frederick Lynch spent five years researching the diversity business from the inside -- interviewing its principals, attending numerous sensitivity seminars, and studying institutions, such as the University of Michigan and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which have transformed themselves into virtual showcases of diversity.
However innocuous this movement appears from the outside, Lynch finds that it is much more than it seems. Corporations, government offices, and colleges spend tens of millions of dollars annually to hire outside diversity consultants, who promise to turn these institutions into utopian meccas; in the institution that has learned to "value diversity," all tension between men and women, blacks and whites, gays and straights will be purged. But when these grandiose promises inevitably fall flat, the diversity merchants are expert in finding scapegoats. Either management didn't spend enough money on programs, or the organization was not aggressive enough in pursuing "non-white male" applicants, or there was a "white male backlash" against the inclusion of minorities and women in the institution.
Indeed, the diversity industry cites no studies or other evidence to back up its dubious marketing claims. Some diversity consultants allege that pursuing diversity enhances a company's bottom line. Others take an even more cynical approach, declaring a bogus moral authority by portraying their business as the heir to the civil rights movement. Lynch persuasively shows how both of these postures work in concert to hoodwink thousands of American managers and CEOs into spending scarce resources on diversity patent medicines. This exhaustively researched, readable book effectively exposes the self-righteous, greedy, and ultimately ineffectual underside of the diversity business.

Excellent view inside the belly of the beast!.......1998-11-07
Naughty is a real understatement and I'm being nice to the Stalinists within the far left-wing PC Party, but as Lynch has written, many careers have been lost over just being honest.
Bravo Mr. Lynch; you've hit the target spot on. Visit more college campuses, especially the division of "Student Services", "Student Affairs", "Student Development", etc. and you'll find a whole host of very enthusiastic PC Party Police (paid by the state) who will not listen to anything outside PC Party dogma.
PS - come visit soon; we need reinforcements!

Because Each Life Is Precious: Why an Iraqi Man Came to Risk Everything for Private Jessica Lynch
Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief Manufacturer: HarperCollins ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0060590548 Release Date: 2003-10-17 |
Book Description
For thirty-three-year-old Mohammed al-Rehaief, this decision -- whether to risk his life and everything he held dear to save Private First Class Jessica Lynch, an American soldier he did not know -- was more than the everyday reckoning with death that permeates wartime. It was the culmination of a life spent at odds with the repressive regime that held his country.
Mohammed's story is the tale of what it was like to come of age in a society where violence and betrayal were everyday events, where one in five adult males worked for the state's security apparatus, where a president-for-life demanded absolute loyalty and adulation. Despite his affluent upbringing and a well-connected uncle, Mohammed was hardly sheltered from the surreal cruelties of Iraq. He was arrested and beaten for owning a satellite dish. His young daughter lost a lung to misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery. An idolized cousin was hanged for joining an Islamic political group. A favorite teacher was carted away for making subversive statements and was never seen again.
Yet even as he navigates a culture tarnished by brutality and corruption, Mohammed also reveals unexpected sides of Iraq, scenes of surprising tenderness and stubborn generosity. He writes with insight and humor about the Iraqi schools, the vagaries of its divorce law, the poignant dynamic between its fathers and sons -- between tradition and jolting change.
As Mohammed offers his powerful perspective on themost publicized story of this controversial war, he emerges as an unlikely hero, a complex and charming character whose values transcend ideology: honor, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the sanctity of human life.

Destined To Be a Classic.......2003-11-27
It's an adventure story, history, humor, sociology, a spiritual journey, and a patriotic work all together (it'll make you proud to be an American).
Mr. Al-Rehaief has done more single-handedly to redeem the Arab culture than all of the rest combined.
Stranger Than Fiction.......2003-11-24
Who would ever have imagined that an Iraqi citizen would knowingly risk losing everything, including his own life and the lives of his family, in order to save one soldier; a soldier whose country was then engaged in bombing his city to pieces. Here, however, we are forced to believe it, simply because we know that it is true.
It has been pointed out that Mr. Al-Rehaief is given but brief mention in her own book, but the fact is that Pfc Jessica Lynch does express that she will be forever grateful to him. That she does not recall the events as he describes them should come as no surprise, since she was barely conscious of anything except pain during her captivity. By Pfc Lynch's own admission, it is unlikely that she would be alive today if it had not been for the efforts of this Iraqi civilian, and his success in reaching the US Marines, stationed outside the city as they continued their attack.
Maybe it is through his family that we can glean some insight into the character of Mr. Al-Rehaief and where his strong moral values originate: As the book ends, the rest of his family, headed by his father, the son of a sheikh, are waiting in international limbo, not knowing what will happen to them next. They have lost everything. Yet I detect no sentiment of regret, complaint or accusation in their descriptions of the hardships caused by the loss of their entire way of life. Such unselfishness seems unfathomable, but again we are forced to believe it, simply because it is true.

Noble Conspirator: Florence S. Mahoney and the Rise of the National Institutes of Health
Judith Robinson Manufacturer: Francis Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 096650514X |
Book Description
"Noble Conspirator" is the biography of Florence S. Mahoney (1899-), one of the driving forces behind the rapid growth of the National Institutes of Health in the three decades after World War II. Her crowning achievement was her almost single-handed creation of the Institute on Aging. As a close friend of presidents, members of Congress, and other influential citizens, Mahoney made her home a forum for public policy discussion. The book offers a unique insider's view into both the history of American medicine during this critical period and the workings of the American system of government.Customer Reviews:
