A place to start.......2007-05-12

I have to agree with three out of the four reviewers prior to mine. This books is focused on broad breasted commercial breeds and industrial or for-profit raising of turkeys. I was looking for a little more info on turkeys and the various breeds, but they are dismissed in the beginning of the book. There are some good ideas on housing and home made feeders, etc. but this information could be found in a more general poultry book. If you need a place to start for turkeys I suppose this is as good as any, but if you are looking for a book about the breeds and why turkeys are different from other poultry, I don't think you'll find what you are looking for with this book. We are not a commercial outfit, we just want to raise our own food in a manner that is humane and takes advantage of the local environment. This year we are starting with Royal Palms, a smaller breed for just the two of us. Next year we'd like to try hatching bourbons. The other books ("Turkey Management" and "Birds of a Feather: Saving Rare Turkeys from Extinction") cited by Gene Hart, above, look more interesting and along the lines of my interests. They did not appear on the usual searches.

Worst of the Storey's Guides.......2005-05-07

If you want to raise a few dumb broad breasted white turkeys this book will be useful for you. But don't! Instead raise some of the interesting heritage breeds. They are intelligent, fun, and delicious. However, they won't gain weight as fast as the broad breasted white.

The best book on raising turkeys is long out of print. It is "Turkey Management" by Marsden and Martin. Any edition. To learn more about rare heritage turkeys see Christman's "Birds of a Feather: Saving Rare Turkeys from Extinction".

Great guide for students and new farmers.......2004-05-02

I highly recommend this book to farmers and students because the information is practical and useful, and the text is easy to read. Dr. Mercia revised and updated this book with more information on selection, breeding, and birthing techniques which I was particularly interested in. Also updated in this edition is more info on housing and behavior as well as health problems and the remedies for those problems.

There are many photos and illustrations included which also helped me a great deal.

very dissapointing.......2003-04-15

After reading Story's chicken and duck book, I felt very much let down by their turkey book. Mercia's attempt to cover the subject was too superficial to be of any real value to someone such as myself wanting to get started with turkeys. Like what are the pros and cons of each breed? How about a little about the breeding of turkeys? Which breeds are best noted for temperment? Cullinary appeal? Which are better for the free range or surviving a winter? How many birds per acre? Holderread's duck book put this one to shame and I felt buying it to be a complete waste of my time and finances. I have found much more useful information on the internet from those that have actual experience raising turkeys in their back yards.

Not that helpful if you know anything about raising poultry........2000-12-24

This book is probably only helpful to a person who has never raised any kind of poultry because it is so basic. There is not much information specific to raising turkeys and the last half of the book is about killing & eating them. There are not many pictures in this book, and none of the more unusual breeds like Slate or Royal Palm are shown. The internet is probably a better resource for information on caring for turkeys.

The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.

A Biography of one of Americas first hero's. Nathanael Greene was a Quaker from Rhode Island who abandoned his religious upbringing and strived to learn more than only what he found in his own backyard. Educated by some of the greatest minds of the late eighteenth century, as well as be self-taught, Nathanael Greene became a master of human nature, politics and military tactics. As a young man he served in the Rhode Island Assembly prior to the Revolutionary War and with a fever pitched love of freedom, soon joined the members of the Sons of Liberty in their quest for independence from their oppressor, England. With the onset of the Revolutionary War, Greene joined the militia as a private and rocketed to the rank of Brigadier General in less than a year. He soon would be George Washington's most trusted general and the most dreaded foe the British would face in the war. Contrary to what is in most history books, the war did not end in 1781, and Greene was alone in the American struggle to oust the British from our shores. For two years, Greene fought a bitterly contested war in the Southern States and ultimately emerged victorious. Denouncing the call of his fellow countrymen to enter politics, Nathanael Greene chose instead to settle down with his family and live the life of a gentleman farmer on his plantation in Georgia. The service and devotion Greene gave to his country has never been recognized and is long overdue. This author intends to rectify that situation.

Telling Greene's Whole Story .......2005-04-11

This is by far a more comprehensive book then the recently published work on Nathanael Greene. There's more to Greene than the battles he fought and the letters he wrote. Anderson's book is obviously a work of love and compassion for the man and not just a general under the command of Washington. In Greene's time he was an icon, but today he is all but forgotten in the annals of history. Anderson's book delves into the complicated mind of Nathanael Greene and not the events surrounding him. Yes, the author could have found a better editor, but in no way does it distract from the honesty with which this book was written. This is the true, modern Greene biography

Awful Writing and Worse Editing!.......2004-12-07

Sorry, but this is a travesty. Despite the author's good intentions, the book is practically unreadable. The constant errors in grammar and punctuation are overwhelming. Sentences without verbs (like this one)! I guess we'll have to wait until the new bio of Greene comes out in early 2005. I hope (and suspect) that the new bio is as good as Greene deserves!
Edit/Update: Having read the Golway, it really didn't deliver either. It's not tortuous to read but, as noted by another reviewer, Anderson's has more depth. I'm really sorry it's so hard to read.
