Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal: War Stories From the Local Food Front

Book Description
Saving the landscape, rebuilding entrepreneurial rural families, and protecting nutritious food are the themes of this timeless treatise-hence the word "testament." Delving into the soul of the Salatin family's nationally acclaimed Polyface Farm, author Joel Salatin offers Family Friendly Farming as the key to dealing with resource issues, food policy, and social fabric.
With humor and personal stories, he opens his family and farm convictions for all to see, share, and enjoy. Written from his unabashed "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist" perspective, his ideas are guaranteed to encourage and challenge virtually every "ism" in the culture. It will captivate anyone passionate about healing the land, healing families, and healing the food supply.
For several decades young people have been leaving the family farm. The ones left behind are now responsible for society's greatest resources: clean land and clean food. Anyone dedicated to preserving these resources will find in these pages a nongovernmental, self-empowerment approach to environmentalism and food safety.
The heart of this book is aimed toward parents tired of their Dilbert cubicle at the end of the expressway who want to reconnect with their children through a pastoral lifestyle. It's written for anyone who yearns to grow old working with and being adored by value-sharing grandchildren and honored by passionate, productive adult children. Family Friendly Farming can make any family business more viable and any family more functional.
The ten-chapter section on how to get the kids to love the farm is an invaluable addition to any collection of child-rearing manuals. Salatin moves from the family team-building section into a practical discussion on how to increase income per acre and create new, white-collar salaries without buying more land, equipment, or buildings. He deals with the unique and thorny issues surrounding any family business by using his own multi-generational family farm experience as his base for insight and wisdom.

A must have........2005-09-03
I have read all but one of Joel Salatins books and every page is like feasting on chocolate. I have not been able to put them down. His wonderful books underline what is so important to me and they easily explain how to make family friendly farming work for you. No bells, no whistles, just pure simple advice.
His Faith in God shows in all his words, as well as his love for his family and his lifesyle.
We have been trying to find a way out of this rat race that we find ourselves in and want to give our children and ourselves a way to enjoy the land and Gods simple pleasures.
Our dreams have changed, and we are going to do everything we can to make that dream happen for us and our children.
We homeschool already and are ready to take that next step.
Joel Salatins books are the best investment we have ever made in our lives to date.
A long, pendantic denouncement of technology.......2005-03-22
I was excited to receive Joel Salatin's book, Family Friendly Farming, as I also am a Christian in a farming area, and a strong believer in good stewardship of the land. I have now read the entire book. It is simply a wandering diatribe of Salatin's beliefs about farming, with no hands-on, practical information whatsoever. The book is, to say the least, pedantic. Salatin's paradigm (his favorite word, found at least once per page)of farming entails a return to the 1800's, with the use of as antiquated, labor-intensive equipment as possible. Children are to be used as farm labor and, if they do not show enthusiasm, are to be disowned, and the farm given to someone more deserving (provided that someone has no dyed hair, no baggy pants, no earrings, no matted hair -- the list goes on and on). As for retirement planning for farming couples -- just say no. Salatin believes farmers in their 40's and 50's should not plan to financially support their own retirement -- after all, their children (or someone more grateful) will take care of them in their old age. As a medical provider, I was especially appalled that Salatin suggested to parents of autistic children that the childhood vaccines they gave to their children may have caused their condition, and added someone-once-told-me evidence that 90% of children with special needs can be "straightened up" with a diet that avoids processed sugar for a couple of days. Of course, I am one of those women with a job outside of the home, which he venomously denounces.
In deference to our common beliefs, I am placing Family Friendly Farming in our compost heap. Believe me, that is where it belongs.
A Life Changing Book!.......2004-10-01
After reading this book, we have definitively decided to move so that we can begin hobby farming with the goal of creating a life sustaining farm! Joel Salatin's philosophies (from this book, You Can Farm, Pastured Poultry Profits, and Salad Bar Beef) will be the foundation in which we build our family friendly farm. A must read if you are a parent (on the farm or not!), you are thinking about farming, dream of farming, or are already on the farm and want to make your lifestyle more family friendly. Thanks Joel!
Inspired my family to change and follow our dreams.......2003-10-29
Family Friendly Farming is about the recentering of your family on the important parts like your children. Every agrarian should read this book, kids or no kids. Do you want your hard work today to be carried on , or subdivided into housing?
This book was inspiring to my husband and I. After reading Pastured Poultry, we purchased all of them, as well as other small farm books and have completely changed our lives. We moved to a state with less restricitve, and more farmer friendly laws, and are working towards getting a small farm for ourselves and our kids. Joel offers alternatives to passing on the farm in Trusts, etc. Let yourself be inspired to dream!
Why your kids will want to farm, too!.......2003-06-17
Joel Salatin has achieved a great deal of prominence in developing his model of sustainable agriculture. His creativity in recognizing and integrating the holistic aspects of how nature prefers to work in raising poultry and cattle comes through in this work that applies the same principles to farm families. His analysis of the dehumanizing aspects of modern agribusiness and how it exploits both the farmer and his family manages to avoid the bitterness that so often accompanies helplessness. That's because rather than remain helpless, he advocates that the farmer change the nature of his business and the relationship he has with his clientele. Through the re-establishment of local agrarian cultures Salatin hopes we find models that renew the life that farming has often promised, but struggled to deliver.
For the Wendell Berry devotees, this is a practical way to live the agrarian life.
It is well written, only occasionally preachy, and well worth the money. This is not a "how to" book. Try his books "Salad Bar Beef", "Pastured Poultry Profits" and "You Can Farm" for the nuts and bolts of what he has accomplished. The guy is exceptional.

Book Description
Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a powerful, fast and inexpensive analytical method. It has proven its usefulness in pharmaceutical, food and environmental analysis. This new edition features a completely revised chapter on documentation, now including the use of digital cameras. Selected new sorbents and instruments are also introduced.
Why has the prior edition been successful? All steps of the analytical procedure are clearly explained, starting with the choice of a suitable TLC technique and ending with data evaluation and documentation. Special emphasis is put on the proper choice of materials for TLC. Properties and functions of various materials and the TLC equipment are described, covering e. g. precoated layers, solvents and developing chambers, and including information on suppliers. Many practical hints for trouble shooting are given. All this is illustrated with numerous coloured figures.
How to use TLC in compliance with GLP/GMP regulations is described in detail, including the required documentation. Therefore the reader can very easily compile his own standard operating procedures.

When Least Is Best: How Mathematicians Discovered Many Clever Ways to Make Things as Small (or as Large) as Possible
ASIN: 0691059470 |
Book Description
Have you ever daydreamed about digging a hole to the other side of the world? Robert Banks not only entertains such ideas but, better yet, he supplies the mathematical know-how to turn fantasies into problem-solving adventures. In this sequel to the popular Towing Icebergs, Falling Dominoes (Princeton, 1998), Banks presents another collection of puzzles for readers interested in sharpening their thinking and mathematical skills. The problems range from the wondrous to the eminently practical. In one chapter, the author helps us determine the total number of people who have lived on earth; in another, he shows how an understanding of mathematical curves can help a thrifty lover, armed with construction paper and scissors, keep expenses down on Valentine's Day.
In twenty-six chapters, Banks chooses topics that are fairly easy to analyze using relatively simple mathematics. The phenomena he describes are ones that we encounter in our daily lives or can visualize without much trouble. For example, how do you get the most pizza slices with the least number of cuts? To go from point A to point B in a downpour of rain, should you walk slowly, jog moderately, or run as fast as possible to get least wet? What is the length of the seam on a baseball? If all the ice in the world melted, what would happen to Florida, the Mississippi River, and Niagara Falls? Why do snowflakes have six sides?
Covering a broad range of fields, from geography and environmental studies to map- and flag-making, Banks uses basic algebra and geometry to solve problems. If famous scientists have also pondered these questions, the author shares the historical details with the reader. Designed to entertain and to stimulate thinking, this book can be read for sheer personal enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
Readable applied math........2004-05-16
This is a fine compendium of math applied to a variety of real world problems. The only thing that bothers me is, where are the problems for the reader to try on his own?!
I mean, a lot of people who are going to read this type of book like the challenge of solving a few problems on their own. The author provides scanty few problems to solve, but geez, even for those he doesn't provide the solutions?! - to me this is a cardinal sin when it comes to expository math books -sorry. So please, next time include a few problems for the reader "a la Martin Gardner"
But it is otherwise a very fine book full of spoilers for us math puzzle freaks.
Great, unusual problems solved in detail.......2002-07-04
The charm and attraction of most of the problems in this book comes from their unusual nature. I for one probably would have never thought to ask what the relative areas of the colors are in the flag of the United States. Another fascinating computation deals with how many times the world's water has been consumed (ingested) by humans. Not surprisingly, it is on the order of one part per million. An interesting supplemental problem would be the rate of change of this ratio. Given the high current population, the rate of increase is the highest in history. While the problems are extremely interesting, one is often hard pressed to find a practical application for the results.
My favorite problem is the computation of the length of the seam of a baseball. The problem fits in well with the mindset of baseball aficionados, who adore obscure statistics concerning the sport they love so passionately. When the weather turns bad, there is not one person among us who has not stood in a shelter and asked the question, "Will I get more rain on me if I run as fast as I can or if I just walk?" The answer here is thorough, as the author even considers the amount of water that splashes on you when your feet hit the ground. To learn the answer to this pressing question, you will have to read it for yourself.
If you ever wish to complete my childhood fantasy of going to China by the direct route through the Earth, then you will want to read chapter 11 before you make the attempt. Assuming you can iron out all the minor engineering details concerning the molten core of the Earth, you will need to understand what will happen to an object at one end of the shaft if it is dropped. The journey to the other side of the Earth would also be a surprisingly short one, roughly forty two minutes in duration.
Learning and teaching mathematics requires that certain problems be presented and solved. However, once the core is covered, consider taking a sideways trip and explore these delightful oddities. It is well worth the effort.
A truly excellent book on applied mathematics.......2000-09-12
This book, together with the author's earlier title "Towing Icebergs, Falling Dominoes" belong to the bookshelf of everyone who loves applied mathematics. They contain some of the best examples I have ever seen on "applied" math (versus many other great titles on "pure" math), represented by numerous fun and funny cases. Read the preface and be intrigued by the questions addressed in them. As all good scientists and engineers know, the key to problem solving is really not math, but how to apply them, how to "model" or "approximate" real world cases. That's what these 2 books are all about.
To fully appreciate these problem-solving skills, you need to be comfortable with advanced calculus or basic differential equations (probably at the halfway point of these courses). On the other hand, students who are taking these courses should read Banks' books just to see what they are really learning. Math really comes to alive through these pages. I had a great time.
Not for everyone.......2000-08-02
Don't be misled by the title; this book is not for everyone. Unless you are very comfortable with calculus and have more than a nodding acquaintance with differential equations this book isn't for you. The author does a good job of providing solutions to interesting problems through applied mathematics. However, he does something that mathematics professors always did that used to drive me crazy and it still does. He sets up a model, develops some defining equations and then makes a leap with something like "using these relationships, it can be established that ..." or "With this information, we easily determine that ..." Some intermediate steps would have been helpful.
The book is interesting and entertaining but without a background in calculus and an understanding of ordinary differential equations, you won't like it.
Fun with math........2000-06-05
This is one of the most delightful books I've read in a long time. I have one other book by Banks, "Towing Icebergs, Falling Dominoes, and other adventures in applied mathematics." Like "Towing Icebergs," "Slicing Pizzas" is jam packed with sometimes useful, sometimes trivial, but always entertaining mathematical excursions into some of the most interesting little "didja know?" subjects in applied mathematics. If you have inquisitive kids - or if you are one yourself -- it's a definite must read.
The book is a little over 250 pages long, and there are 26 chapters, so each chapter is pretty brief - typically only about ten pages. Most of the mathematics in the book is algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and a little bit of calculus, and the book is literally packed with mathematical equations and diagrams. Just because most of the mathematics is at the high-school level, however, does not mean that it's necessarily easy or trivial. When it comes to "mess'n with math" Banks is a real pro, and I found myself on more than one occasion taking up to 30 minutes filling in the details from one of his equations to the next.
What's fun about Bank's book is that it goes after problems you might not have thought about. And when Banks starts going into detail it can really make your head spin. Take, for example, the American flag. How much could you write about the mathematical description of the flag? Well, Banks packs more information than you might suspect into 22 pages (chapter 1 and lots of chapter 2). It seems that just about everything you can say about the flag (mathematically speaking) and about five-pointed stars and golden ratios is tied up in this chapter. Ever wonder what percentage of the flag is blue, white, and red? Banks will tell you.
Caroline particularly got a kick out of chapter 3. She is 10 years old and loves pizza, so when Banks decided to write a chapter on how to cut a pizza to get the most number of pieces for a given number of cuts she could relate. Think it's easy? Try working the problem and then compare your answer with Banks. When you are done, do it for watermelons (that is, do it in three dimensions).
Have you ever wondered what is the best strategy in getting from one point to the next through a rainstorm? Is it best to run fast and minimize the amount of water on your head whilst soaking your front and splashing your feet and legs? Or, should your run a little slower, get a little wetter on top, but keep your legs and shoes a little less damp? This is yet another example of the seemingly whimsical yet eminently practical and always mathematical problems that Banks entertains us with (chapter 4).
Then there are those tidbits for spouting out around the dinner table during awkward times when everyone stops talking. "Hey, guess how many times the oxygen in the world's atmosphere has been breathed by people" Or "Hey, guess how many times the water in the world has been drunk by people"
Now here is an interesting idea. Because the earth spins on its axis it is an oblate ellipsoid, which means that its diameter is greater at the equator than at the poles. Banks asks the question, "which rivers run up hill." That is, which rivers have their mouth further away from the earth's center than their heads? Think it isn't possible? Think again and then read chapter 6.
Many of the problems that Banks solves deal with spherical geometry and trigonometry. For example, how would you go about calculating the length of the seam on a baseball or tennis ball? Banks does it in chapter 24 in what is probably the most mathematically intense chapter. It's not as easy as you might think.
Chapter 9 is about great number sequences, and Banks finds a practical application in - among all things - the problem of how the captain of a destroyer would go about tracking down an enemy submarine. Who would have thought there was a connection? There are too many examples to mention them all, but rounding out my favorites are chapters on how to make a valentine, how to pursue prey, how many people have ever lived on earth, population explosions, and (my very favorite) what makes a rainbow.
This book is very much in the same flavor as Bank's other book, "Towing Icebergs." It also has much of the same flavor as James R. Newman's four-volume set "The World of Mathematics." If you are acquainted with any of those books, and found them interesting, I think you will like this one.
One of the things I like best about this book is the frequent use of homework assignments. In lots of cases Banks takes the reader through to the bitter end, but in others he leaves tantalizing tidbits for the really enthusiastic readers (though he often provides answers - something welcome, in my opinion). The only real complaint I have about the book is it's utterly useless index. This is such a fun book, and covers so much material that it's real shame you cannot go look up many of the topics it discusses by using the index. For example, some of the most interesting information in the book deals with the golden number and golden ratio, yet neither "golden number," or "golden ratio" is in the index. I read the book with a pen and marker, so I updated the index in several cases.
If you love mathematics and doing mental calethsentics I think you will really enjoy this book.

Book Description
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Three days later, a young Navy pilot-in-training won his wings and found himself flying torpedo planes against enemy targets in the Pacific.
From his days as a Naval aviation cadet aboard the "Yellow Peril" biplane trainer, to his first bombing runs on Guadalcanal, to his life aboard an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific, Norman Berg offers a fast-paced narrative filled with humor and meticulous attention to detail. Much more than a simple WWII memoir, this story goes beyond the action of battle to explore the author's innermost conflicts and chronicles one young couple's wartime struggle to balance love, duty, and commitment.
Customer Reviews:
A Gripping Human Story of a Carrier Pilot.......2003-04-15
I just finished reading My Carrier War by Norman E.Berg. It is an absorbing and interesting page-turner. Mr. Berg's memories of his WW II experience offer a gripping picture of what it took to be a naval pilot in 1941 and beyond, as well as the human story of a young husband and father who faced combat as leader and participant.
This account offers an in-depth variety of information and illumination, regardless of the interest of any particular reader. It's about learning to fly, about learning to be a naval pilot, about the characteristics of warplanes, about flying from an aircraft carrier, about life at sea, about falling in love, about making a personal life in the midst of war, about separation from your loved ones, about dropping torpedos and divebombing, about comradship, about U.S. strategy in winning the south pacific, and about humanity in a time of war.
Beyond the details, this writer knits the story together in an engaging way. There is no tedium in this book, nor is it a superficial recitation of dry history. It offers a timeless lesson in facing personal challenges and prevailing. The book is interestingly illustrated with photographs and maps. It is a satisfying read.
Absorbing story of one man's coming of age in a time of war.......2002-08-29
This chronicle is a rich tapestry of war time action woven against a background of a boy's transformation into manhood through duty, love, and acceptance of personal limitations. Norman Berg brings his combat missions alive with gripping vividness of detail. But it is the comparatively economical passges on his subjective experiences that give this book its poignancy. Staying the course in war and sixty years of reflection have added the tincture of a profound sense of fate to this writer's ink. It makes this memoir shine.
A Must Read.......2002-08-22
I couldn't put it down. As someone who was born after WWII, I was able to appreciate better the time period where we all went through this difficult period. May we never have to do that again. Thank you Mr. Berg for a well written book and am looking forward to seeing it in movie form.
A patriots story.......2002-02-28
Capt. Berg tells the true story of patriotisms conflict with his new family life and how he conquered his fears to serve two long flying tours in the Pacific war during the early and darkest hours of the war that affected and changed not only America but the entire world. Berg is one of the "Greatest Generation" and we are lucky to hear his story in his own words spoken from the cockpit of his torpedo bomber . I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. A Great Story. Eugene A. Olsen, Capt. USMM (ret)
Transports the reader back to a time of war and danger.......2001-12-14
My Carrier War: The Life And Times Of A Naval Aviator In WW II is a gripping memoir of Norman E. Berg, who was a pilot-in-training and earned his wings three days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. In addition to recounting harrowing battles, My Carrier War also explores the author's inner conflicts and chronicles a young couple's efforts to balance military duty with commitment and love. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the powerful, evocative text. A memoir so strong it transports the reader back to a time of war, danger, and uncertainty, when the fate of America and the world was at stake, My Carrier War is a very welcome contribution to the growing library of World War II memoirs and autobiographies.

Book Description
Cradled All the While is a beautifully crafted memoir in which the author recounts the story of her mother's death from cancer. In the midst of career and child-rearing, Corse becomes her mother's primary caregiver, but her story is a spiritual journey that will nurture the faith of people of many religious backgrounds. The themes encountered throughout the book parallel the issues dealt with in practical grieving resources; here, however, they are played out in the lives of a real family.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful memoir .......2007-02-28
This book is a moving account of Sara Corse's mother's death not as a moment in time, but as a culmination of life's journey. It is wonderful to see someone be able to look past the stress and burden of caring for a dying person and realize the emotional rewards. Sara is down to earth about her and her mother's relationship and demonstrates that you do not need a perfect relationship to fully appreciate one another. There are many ways that this book can touch the reader: daughters can relate to the many dimensions of a mother-daughter relationship; caregivers can be inspired by Sara's fortitude; those who lost a loved one can learn a way to fill a void. Death is a very difficult subject to discuss and the fact that this book presents it in such a beautiful way is a gift in itself.
A Psychologist's View on the book and reader's guide.......2006-03-07
"My mother's final gift to me was given when she was beyond believing that she had anything left to offer anyone, and was received when I was long past expecting anything from her." Thus ends the prologue to the author's moving personal account of her mother's cancer experience, and the way in which the illness transformed their relationship over time. In this memoir, Dr. Corse intertwines flashbacks from her own life with the unfolding story of her mother's illness, illuminating the complex web of family relationships within which she struggles to understand and cope with her mother's dying. Memoirs about personal loss run the risk of leaving the reader feeling depleted or emotionally manipulated. Dr. Corse's book does neither. Her book is about the redemptive and transformative power of caring for a dying parent, leaving the reader feeling hopeful and inspired. This book is for anyone with a disappointing relationship with a parent who has died or is dying, and for everyone who seeks grace and healing in their relationships throughout life. The reader's guide, available free at www.councilforrelationships.org/articles/staying-centered_2-20-06.htm, offers a vehicle for reflecting on and discussing the book's themes related to dying, caring, and healing. The guide is organized according to topic, referencing specific sections in the book, and contains thought-provoking questions suitable for book clubs and for students in psychology, psychiatry, pastoral counseling, social work, nursing, and religion.
Substance and style!.......2005-06-13
When I recently picked up this book again to re-read it, what I remembered best about it were the author's impressive honesty and the insights that gave me into my relations with my own mother.
This time I was struck by how gracefully she handles the language and tells her story. Ever since my Jane Austen kick a few years ago I have found myself putting down books that I believed had something to say because I didn't like the way they were saying it. Not so here. This book is thought-provoking, and it is also a pleasure to read (but not if you're looking for something light-hearted!). I think it would appeal to a wider audience than those especially drawn to it for its focus on grief and on mother-daughter relations. I hope the author will write more.
Recommended for anyone with a mother.......2005-02-01
I found this to be a beautifully written book. To be able to take care of the dying is a tremendous gift, a blessing, and Sara found unexpected grace and healing in it. I found it only made me appreciate my mother even more. I wanted to tell her how important it was to me to be able to take care of her now that she is older, and she mustn't prevent me from doing so. If your relationship with your mom is troubled, all the more reason to read this book. Most of us don't want to face the inevitable, but when we do, some surprising things can happen. An excellent book for anyone with a mother...particularly someone in midlife with an older parent. Thank you Sara, for this book.
A Courageous and Honest Memoir.......2005-01-04
As the author of this beautifully written book says, "The curtain between life and death is a gossamer veil." With insight and honesty, Sara Corse gazes through this gossamer veil as she recounts her experiences caring for her mother, dying of cancer. Part memoir, part reflection on the meaning of life and death, this book mainly gives a moving account of her mother's last months, but through the use of flashbacks and discursions, Corse shows how the tenderness and pain of this final illness are woven into the larger complexities of a mother-daughter relationship. Corse understands the anguish of losing a parent in the context of her own sometimes anguished struggle for a personal identity and a meaningful faith. For those facing the death of a loved one, this book will be a comfort and a help. For anyone seeking understanding in the presence of the mystery of death, this book will be a deep river of wisdom.
