    Book Description

Faced with the ever increasing difficulty of reaching their targets, sales executives need new ways to improve their organizations' results. Thad Green, consultant, former university professor, and widely recognized authority on motivation and performance in the United States, sees it this way: there are two aspects that sales executives have some control over-- the way their sales force sells, and the way it is managed and motivated. Green draws on his extensive experience to explain how to motivate prospects to buy, how to motivate salespeople to sell, and how to prepare and motivate the organization itself. His method is remarkably obvious, but it works exceptionally well. Instead of trying to do something different, Green says get back to the basics, but in a way that is all his own. His book provides this essentially simple but proven method for leading the sales organization in a clear, easily grasped way that sales executives, and their people, can put to immediate use. Green shows sales executives how to improve the sales organization by equipping it with motivation techniques and a full comprehension of the selling process. His message is clear and proven. Sales results improve dramatically when selling is viewed as motivating people to buy and when sales organizations learn to use this concept. Sales executives who learn this--and it is definitely not common knowledge, says Green--can pass these techniques to their sales managers, who can then train and motivate the sales force. It's an approach that in practice "sounds right and feels good," Green explains, and it produces results. It also creates the desire to learn more about motivation and selling, and this in turn will have added benefits. For people in any occupation involving sales and a knowledge of sales techniques, this book will be a pleasant surprise: a way to understand sales strategies and how an organization can implement them, in a way that few have thought of--a simple way that works.

5 out of 5 stars A model for motivation, performance and results.......1998-08-07

This practical book presents guidance on how to improve sales organization results by applying the principles of motivation to both the process of selling, as well as leading those who sell. The author presents a central motivation model, built upon the expectancy theory of Victor Vroom. The model enables an understanding of why people buy. The book takes on the challenge of equipping sales people with this understanding of buyer motivation in order to achieve their sales goals. The primary focus is on the motivational dynamics of the selling process, which Green addresses with clarity and in detail. The chapter, for example, on closing a sale, is excellent and, alone, worth the price of the book. The final three chapters concern motivating the sales person, center on self-management, making goals motivating, and sharing responsibility. The appeal of this book is that it effectively uses a model of motivation that is clear, based on research, and has an intuitive appeal! . The origins of this model are far from new; what is new is the results-oriented way in which Green applies it to the sales arena. As one who is a consultant and develops incentive programs for sales organizations, I find Green's book highly valuable. Of special note is that he makes motivation central to his thinking; a refreshing departure from the usual cursory lip service typically given to motivation. This book is a serious effort to make the linkage between motivation, effort, and results, both meaningful and useful.

    Book Description

Willow Creek Press is proud to bring back to print Bradford Angier's classic One Acre & Security: How To Live Off the Earth without Ruining It. First published in 1972, Angier (deceased) is one of the pre-eminent voices of the back-to-the-earth movement. One Acre & Security is a book for all those who have dreamed of living close to the earth, not in the wilderness, but on land within easy driving distance of the city or suburbs. It begins by explaining what sort of land to look for, where to look and how to make sure of land titles. It goes on to discuss organic gardening on one acre of land, raising herbs for money and bees for honey, growing grapes, making wine, juice and jellies, and drying raisins. For the more serious back-to-the-earther, there are sections on how to build a house, keep cows, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry, raise rabbits, earthworms, fish, frogs and turtles, and how to find the best hunting and fishing. Angier's text is as useful and thorough today as it was 30 years ago, and deserves to be on the shelves of a new generation of back-to-earthers.

4 out of 5 stars good resource, but not for everyone.......2007-02-15

While this book was very thorough and had a lot of good info, there was a lot of emphasis on keeping animals for food or slaughter. This is fine for some folks, it just wasn't something that I was interested in. There was also mention of keeping rabbits and guinea pigs to sell to laboratories, which probably isn't something a lot of today's earth loving folk would be interested in. The book does have some good information about getting started gardening, as well as how to get started keeping a variety of animals along with bees, fish, frogs, and earthworms. All in all though, I think it is sort of more of a book to give you general ideas than anything else. If you wanted to really get into gardening or bee keeping, etc., I would opt to get a book specifically about such a topic. If you just want some ideas about what you might do and/or how to get started, then this book would be a good match for you.

5 out of 5 stars A classic on how to live in the country and off the land.......2001-02-27

Bradford Angier's One Acre & Security provides a classic on how to live in the country and off the land without ruining it.It first appeared in 1972 and was one of the forerunners of the back-to-earth movement: here it returns to offer new audiences discussions on organic gardening, how to build a house and keep animals, and how to live in the country.

                            Book Description

The importance of quality assurance in the production, storage and use of manufactured preparations is widely recognized. This book encapsulates the issues involved in the manufacture of non-steriles, such as creams, ointments, herbal remedies, shampoos, soaps and toiletry products (as opposed to sterile drugs and injectible products). Knowledge of the microbial limits is expanded, new standards are included, and coverage of the preservation issues of dosage forms is widened to include semi-solids and liquid preparations. This edition also contains new regulations regarding preservative efficacy testing and covers pharmacopoeial and industry regulations and guidelines. Rapid methods are also discussed, now more common in cosmetic and toiletry practice, in their pharmaceutical capacity.

                            Book Description

This two-volume handbook presents a comprehensive overview of nonlinear dynamic system identification. The books include many aspects of nonlinear processes: modelling, parameter estimation, structure search, nonlinearity and model validity tests. The book includes not only nonparametric models but also parametric models which include a limited number of parameters. Time domain parameter estimation is dealt with in detail; frequency domain and power spectrum procedures are also included.
Audience: This work is intended for postgraduate students, researchers and engineers whose work involves nonlinear systems. Many examples, case studies and experimental identifications of real processes have been included.

Note that I have not yet read enough of this book to provide a detailed review. I do feel obligated though to present information about the book that I feel is lacking.
                            1. This is a cookbook.
The authors (in the introduction) state that this book presents information as "recipes." So many different models are presented, but little is said about the reasons for picking particular models or the theoretical aspects of them. That being said, the book still can be useful since, presumably, the authors have surveyed the field of literature and picked out the "most useful" techniques for you. You can always follow the many references for further information.
                            2. Dated information in volume 1, and maybe volume 2.
Almost all of the references are pre-1990. They state that much of the information on this topic is "too mathematical." So I guess that's why they stick to the oldies.

                            Book Description

Acclaimed biographer Annette Kobak turns her attention to her own family as she sets out to uncover her father's never-discussed past. A mysterious and conspicuously silent figure in Annette's life for some forty-five years, Joe Kobak at last shared with his daughter his harrowing experiences during World War II, which she has turned into a riveting work of history and memory.

Born on the border of Poland and Czechoslovakia, Joe Kobak fled the Nazis, suffered imprisonment by the Russians, then joined Polish forces fighting in France. Later he escaped to London where he spent the duration of the war intercepting Soviet messages. In Joe's War, his daughter captures Joe Kobak's story in his own words, and interweaves it with her own search for a life story she can make sense of. Embarking upon a challenging and poignant journey of her own–retracing her father's footsteps across a barren and unfamiliar Ukraine–the author sheds light on the dark corners of her family history and on some of the darker aspects of the war, bringing history to life in unexpected ways.

I found this book fascinating and extremely readable. I was not able to put it down. I especially liked the way the author wove her father's story into the events of Hitler's attempt to take over Europe. I did not know the story of the brave Polish and Czech people and how after giving their all to the Allied cause they were ultimately "given up" to appease the Russians.

                            3 out of 5 stars Ultimately disappointing.......2004-11-22

This nonfiction story concerns the experience of the author's father during World War II in his native Poland and later as a decoding agent in the U.K. forces. In addition, the author weaves in her own travels through Ukraine and Poland, to the places that her father lived and traveled during the early war years. One learns in great detail, for example, about the British and allied betrayal of Czechoslovakia on the one hand, and of Poland, on the other.

The historical facts are interesting and of great import even now, for their relevance to parallel, current-day situations in which the world community is all-too-willing to sacrifice third parties like Israel and the Southern Sudan on the alter of promises of peace (albeit false). Clearly, the world has learned little from history.

But in the end, the author does not adequately explain her father's total silence about the war during her childhood. I kept expecting something of enormous import to happen in this book, and while it was interesting, and included a great deal of useful history, the end result was ultimately disappointing.

The biggest fault herein is the structure: the author would have better-served her purpose by detailing the precarious situation of Poles at the book's outset, and re-emphasizing it throughout, rather than explaining the point only in hindsight at its end. By then, I had all but lost patience and interest in the long, drawn-out tale, with no clear point.

                            Book Description

At 18-months, Ashley still didn't talk. When she wouldn't turn around when her name was called, her hearing came into question. She fixated on minute pieces of dirt and only ate a diet of crunchy foods. She wrapped herself up in a thick fog—impenetrable to everyone, except for Barney the Dinosaur. She worked puzzles like a kindergartener and was computer savvy before she was two-years-old. Late-night searches on the Internet hinted at a reason. A neurodevelopmental specialist confirmed it. AUTISM—a communication and social interaction disorder—a diagnosis that shook the foundation of a family and shattered a mother's world.

Ashley could hear. But she couldn't listen. A therapy to retrain her ears to perceive sound better took her back to the time in the womb—where listening begins. With the help of Mozart, Ashley was awakened! Her brain's desire to communicate was kindled, fostering a connection with her body, her family, and the world around her. Ashley had recovered!

But how could Sharon Ruben, a clinical researcher in her own right, convince the skeptics without clinical trial data to prove its effectiveness? She didn't need data. She had Ashley—it was all the proof she needed!

"Too many families are devastated and left without hope by a diagnosis of autism. Awakening Ashley restores that hope. This is a story of Sharon Ruben's courage to move beyond the label and her undying efforts to educate and advocate for her daughter's recovery." —Valerie Dejean, Director, Spectrum Center, Bethesda, Maryland

Ashley Ruben, the second of 3 daughters was born in 1999. Ashley displayed autistic behaviors from early infancy. She was placid; had low muscle tone; liked only crunchy foods and had difficulty sucking. She had poor oral coordination and literally had trouble understanding what she was hearing. She also suffered from several ear infections as an infant.

Ashley was diagnosed with autism shortly before she turned two. After some disastrous efforts at doing lab work to screen out the possibility of Fragile X Syndrome, Ashley was placed on a rigorous intervention program. Many of the therapies Ashley underwent included a casein/gluten free regimen, which "repaired" her leaky gut; one on one training and Auditory Integration Therapy (AIT) - Tomatis method.

The Tomatis AIT is much more rigorous and takes more time than the AIT program developed by Dr. Berard, who successfully treated Georgiana Thomas in 1976. (Georgiana Thomas' mother, Annabelle Stehli writes of Georgiana's recovery from autism using AIT - Berard and on her web site describes both the Berard and Tomatis methods).

In Ashley's case, the Tomatis approach was to strap earphones to her head and have her "retrain" her inner ears so she could, according to the theory learn to listen and make auditory distinctions. Mozart was played to her because the high frequencies in Mozart's music was "tonally closest to the human voice" and the high frequencies are the sounds people hear in utero, when the brain and audition are developing.

The method is described in detail in this book and readers will soar along on falcon's wings at Ashley's spectacular progress. This is one of the best books I have EVER read. The Tomatis method was plainly a success; Ashley is currently enrolled in classes for the gifted and is a proficient guitarist. Let's hope she plays Beatle songs.

Sharon Ruben, herself a scientist has done scientific research on the Tomatis method and has shared brilliant insights with readers in this remarkable book. She has appeared on SoapNet in 2004 with Ashley; on the Today Show on 5/3/03 and Ashley's story was first introduced to readers at large in the April 2006 "Exceptional Parent Magazine" and the June 2006 issue of "Spectrum Magazine." She has also started a web site with therapeutic teaching tools for children on the spectrum.

The biggest reward of all was seeing and hearing Ashley on these shows. A bright, beautiful and engaging child, Ashley has proven that autism really can be knocked out on its ear! The victory makes me think of Ray Charles' 1961 smash, "Hit the Road, Jack" and in the case of autism "and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more, hit the road, Jack and don't you come back no more!" It also makes me think of George Harrison's 1969 stellar gem, "Here Comes the Sun," the lyrics of which I think are very a propos.

AIT and its success with autism was introduced to the world at large in Sound of a Miracle: A Childs Triumph over Autism .
