Communities and Ecosystems: Linking the Aboveground and Belowground Components (MPB-34) (Monographs in Population Biology)
David A. Wardle Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691074879 |
Book Description
Most of the earth's terrestrial species live in the soil. These organisms, which include many thousands of species of fungi and nematodes, shape aboveground plant and animal life as well as our climate and atmosphere. Indeed, all terrestrial ecosystems consist of interdependent aboveground and belowground compartments. Despite this, aboveground and belowground ecology have been conducted largely in isolation. This book represents the first major synthesis to focus explicitly on the connections between aboveground and belowground subsystems--and their importance for community structure and ecosystem functioning.
David Wardle integrates a vast body of literature from numerous fields--including population ecology, ecosystem ecology, ecophysiology, ecological theory, soil science, and global-change biology--to explain the key conceptual issues relating to how aboveground and belowground communities affect one another and the processes that each component carries out. He then applies these concepts to a host of critical questions, including the regulation and function of biodiversity as well as the consequences of human-induced global change in the form of biological invasions, extinctions, atmospheric carbon-dioxide enrichment, nitrogen deposition, land-use change, and global warming.
Through ambitious theoretical synthesis and a tremendous range of examples, Wardle shows that the key biotic drivers of community and ecosystem properties involve linkages between aboveground and belowground food webs, biotic interaction, the spatial and temporal dynamics of component organisms, and, ultimately, the ecophysiological traits of those organisms that emerge as ecological drivers. His conclusions will propel theoretical and empirical work throughout ecology.

Axions: Theory, Cosmology, and Experimental Searches (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540735178 |
Book Description
Axions are peculiar hypothetical particles that could both solve the CP problem of quantum chromodynamics and at the same time account for the dark matter of the universe. Based on a series of lectures by world experts in this field held at CERN (Geneva), this volume provides a pedagogical introduction to the theory, cosmology and astrophysics of these fascinating particles and gives an up-to-date account of the status and prospect of ongoing and planned experimental searches. Learners and practitioners of astroparticle physics will find in this book both a concise introduction and a current reference work to a showcase topic that connects the "inner space" of the elementary particle world with the "outer space" of the universe at large.

Manufacturer: American Institute of Physics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0735400628 |
Book Description
The 2K1BC Workshop was a meeting of scientists from all over the world involved in cosmological observations in the millimetre wavelength range. Current and upcoming experiments were reported with present results and future forecasts: balloon borne projects which have detected the tiny temperature fluctuations in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), satellite programs that promise to give a clearer picture of observational cosmology, and ground-based observations which are the necessary complement to these projects. A separate section is devoted to the CMBR polarization that seems to be the main challenge in the near future. Particular attention was devoted to specific instrumental topics (optics, cryogenics, and detectors) and observational techniques.

Computational Aerodynamics and Fluid Dynamics
J.-J. Chattot Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540434941 |
Book Description
This textbook is written for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as engineers who will develop or use code in the simulation of fluid flows or other physical phenomena. The objective of the book is to give the reader the basis for understanding the way numerical schemes achieve accurate and stable simulations of physical phenomena. It is based on the finite-difference method and simple enough problems that allow also the analytic solutions to be worked out. ODEs as well as hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic types are treated. The reader also will find a chapter on the techniques of linearization of nonlinear problems. The final chapter applies the material to the equations of gas dynamics. The book builds on simple model equations and, pedagogically, on a host of problems given together with their solutions.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of Shock Propagation and Reflection in a Pulse Detonation Engine Combustor
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423514394 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A943024. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ability to enhance detonation wave transmission at a diffraction plane through various shock reflection/focusing conditions was evaluated numerically. The geometry dimensions were generally representative of the condition existing in a valve-less pulse detonation engine developed by the Naval Postgraduate School and consisted of a small cylindrical "initiator" combustor which transmitted a shock wave to a larger diameter combustor. The wall cross section of the larger combustor was varied to evaluate the increase in reflected shock temperature and pressure conditions ultimately revealing the dramatic increase in local temperature for a "scalloped" outer wall condition over the cylindrical cross section cases. The initiator diameter was held constant and the larger combustor diameters varied in order to evaluate the effects of diameter ratio on the shock reflection conditions for both cylindrical and scalloped geometries. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver known as OVERFLOW was used to model the fluid dynamic processes but was limited in capability to shock wave Mach numbers less than about 4.2.
