Extememly Useful.......2005-08-15
Whether you are a new dog owner, just got a new puppy, are training an adult dog or are not new to dog training, this book is filled with lots of valuable training techniques, just like the title. Many techniques you teach and use to build upon later. Lots of diagrams, pictures, illustrtations, and lists. Would be great for a 4-H member training a dog or for the casual pet owner just wanting to learn some basic training stuff up through the professional obedience trainer. I refer back to it throughout the year in all my training. Everyone who has a dog should get this book and use it!!
Building block for performance.......2005-07-20
When I first ordered the book I never received it from the first company I ordered it from. I finally found the phone # for amazon.com and talk to a respresentive who was very helpful and the book arrived 2 days later from amazon.I never did hear from the original company.
A Must-Have Book for Performance Dogs.......2003-11-23
The content of this book was great. The author gives a lot of examples of games you can play with your puppy to make training fun. I found several training errors I have been making with my own dogs in this book and, once I saw it in print, could see how that might affect motivation.
Contrary to what another reviewer previously mentioned, this book is NOT full of harsh corrections. In fact, there is not one instance where the author advocates harsh corrections or hard-handed training methods. When she does discuss corrections, it is with a very fair, gentle approach that seeks to get the dog immediately back to a position of earning praise while not letting a situation get to the point where the dog feels like commands are optional. This ENTIRE book is about FUN with your dog and learning how to make training, learning, and being with you something your dog can't wait to do. It is one of the most positive training books I have ever read.
She has great information about the use of food and toys and tells you how to use them appropriately while still making time with you be your dogs ultimate reward. She also talks about how to structure your puppy's life to make the most of your time together.
The author uses many real examples from working with her own dog or from her students. She also has a very nice chapter or two at the end about how to set goals to help yourself be successful with your dog. There are a lot of pictures and boxes highlighting the main ideas or offering in quick bites some additional ideas of how to utilize the information.
The ONLY complaint I have with this book is in its organization. She mentions having your puppy do a sit or a down all throughout the book but doesn't talk about teaching the sit or down until the 3rd to last chapter. She also gives TONS of examples of how to train your dog through play throughout the book but it can leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed feeling like you should train your dog 5 hours a day! It isn't until one of the very last chapters that she gives some ideas of how much set aside training time should be done each day and also talks about incorporating 30 seconds here or there as you are doing something else with the puppy anyway.
I would definitely consider this book a must-have. I plan to try to read it at least one more time before my next performance puppy arrives.
Devour this book!.......2002-11-06
This is a fabulous guide for starting a puppy to be any kind of competition dog. It shows you how to train your puppy, through day-to-day interaction, for a playful, confident attitude (you can teach precision later). The authors explain how to gradually move your puppy away from treats training and how to use praise effectively. The book describes how to get your puppy's attention and focus, primarily with games, so your puppy will LOVE to train and work with you. Sidebars describe how to work with some special dog personality types. Read this book before you bring your next puppy home!
Outmoded training ideas.......2002-10-16
Although I eagerly hoped for a good book about introducing agility to puppies with positive reinforcement, this book gravely disappointed me. In fact, this book was so filled with punishments ("corrections") of the puppy that I could barely believe that the book had been recently written; it read like dog training books written 20 years ago. It appeared to me that the author had been left behind in the revolution in positive reinforcement dog training. The author's ideas are particularly disturbing because they are applied to puppies.

Book Description
Distance protection provides the basis for network protection in transmission systems and meshed distribution systems. Initially this book covers the fundamentals of distance protection and the special features of numerical technology. The emphasis is then placed on the application of numerical distance relays in distribution and transmission systems.
For the second edition all contents, and especially the product descriptions have been revised and updated.
This book is aimed at students and engineers who wish to familiarise themselves with the subject of power system protection, as well as the experienced user, entering the area of numerical distance protection. Furthermore it serves as a reference guide for solving application problems.
Book Description
Why another book on the finite element method? There are currently more than 200 books in print with "Finite Element Method" in their titles. Many are devoted to special topics or emphasize error analysis and numerical accuracy. Others stick to the fundamentals and do little to describe the development and implementation of algorithms for solving real-world problems. Introduction to Finite and Spectral Element Methods Using MATLAB provides a means of quickly understanding both the theoretical foundation and practical implementation of the finite element method and its companion spectral element method. Written in the form of a self-contained course, it introduces the fundamentals on a need-to-know basis and emphasizes algorithm development and computer implementation of the essential procedures. Firmly asserting the importance of simultaneous practical experience when learning any numerical method, the author provides FSELIB: a software library of user-defined MATLAB functions and complete finite and spectral element codes. FSELIB is freely available for download from http://dehesa.freeshell.org, which is also a host for the book, providing further information, links to resources, and FSELIB updates. The presentation is suitable for both self-study and formal course work, and its state-of-the-art review of the field make it equally valuable as a professional reference. With this book as a guide, you immediately will be able to run the codes as given and graphically display solutions to a wide variety of problems in heat transfer and solid, fluid, and structural mechanics.

Excellent Personal Memoir .......2005-10-28
"Sea Of Sharks" by Elmer Renner and Ken Birks. Subtitled: "A Sailor's World War II Survival Story". Naval Institute Press, 2004.
Many years after the events, these two gentlemen got together to write the ever so brief history of the World War II minesweeper, YMS-472. This was a tiny vessel, constructed of wood, so as to avoid setting off magnetic mines. The beginning chapters deal with the commission of the ship, the accidents during practice and drill, and the routine efforts of the YMS-472 operating out of Governor's Island, in the harbor of New York City. As the war wound down, a group of minesweepers were ordered from the East Coast to the Pacific theatre. Mr. Renner's description of the voyage to the Pacific is an excellent sea story in itself. The crew had been concerned with the fact that the vessel's number, 472, added up to 13 ... which sailors considered unlucky,. Then, their date of arrival was scheduled as the 13th. Renner brings up many of the superstitions of the crew ..."hard luck ship", and the need for him, as an officer, to deal with such personnel problems (see Chapter Two, entitled appropriately , "Thirteens", pp. 29-51). There is a lot of old Navy in this section.
From Chapter Three ("Typhoon"), to the end of the book, Renner deals with the so-called "Makurazaki Typhoon", September 1945, the destruction it wrought, and the capsizing of the tiny YMS-472. Renner's description of actual shuddering and capsizing of the vessel is extremely frightening. The last few chapters deal the survivors' days in a very small raft, their attempts to swim to an island (with one sailor being eaten by a shark), the lack of search and rescue by the U.S. Navy, and their rescue, apparently by a chance sighting.
Renner indicts the U.S. Navy for either a sin of omission, if the Navy staff at Okinawa did know that the YMS-472 was missing at sea, or for a sin of commission, if the same Navy staff did not even make an effort to find the YMS-472 and her survivors. Twenty five men went down with the ship. RIP.
Thank you Mr. Renner.......2005-02-09
Elmer Renner's narrative of his near death experience in the waters off Okinawa immediately after World War II is a gift to those of us who grew up in the post-war generation. On the surface, this is a story of eight men who survived the ravages of the Pacific during and after the worst typhoon on record. But the simple survival story is a metaphor: the immediacy, the tenacity, and the endurance, of the eight crew-members provides an example of the kind of heroism that, multiplied a thousand-fold, protected this nation from the wartime threat posed by the Axis nations.
In a moving description of the harrowing days at sea on a skeletal raft without food, water, or enough square inches to sleep, the author invites us truly to experience the determination of the stranded sailors to survive and to return to their families. We seem literally to experience the sailors' hunger, their thirst, their disorientation, and finally their hallucinations. We approach that reality as closely as a reader may come vicariously.
Other reviewers have noted the astonishing failure of the Navy to search for the survivors of the minesweeper after it was sent directly into the path of destruction by the Naval command. There seems to be no question that there were ships, planes, and personnel available for the search which was inexplicably abandoned.
And other questions remain. Were the weather warning systems actually so primitive that catastrophe could not have been predicted? Why was a shallow water minesweeper sent into deep sea water to battle the worst weather imaginable? Why was the treacherous sailor who made it to safety never disciplined for his failure to seek help for his companions? And who is to answer for the callous abandonment of the search for survivors?
Mr. Renner's sense of disappointed resignation seems an understated response to the reader who has become furious on his behalf. His own review of Naval documents recording the inquiry into the disaster reveals only inconclusive, unsatisfactory, and self-serving answers. No one was found to be at fault. The administration of justice to those responsible for the deaths of 25 crew members and the nearly indescribable suffering of the survivors may seem a very small matter in the entire context of World War II. But the dead and the living of YMS-472 deserve nothing less.
A harrowing and horrifying true story.......2004-12-13
Sea Of Sharks is the true story of a Marine Corps veteran who served as a radio operator in the Pacific theater of war during World War II, and the occupation of Japan. Yet Sea Of Sharks is not a saga of the war itself, but rather of a handful of men caught in the grip of one of the worst typhoons in recorded history, off the coast of Okinawa. Their Navy minesweeper was unable to withstand the fury of nature, and the author and eight others barely escaped on a raft. Not only did they have to weather the horrific storm, but afterward, they endured days of hunger, thirst, shark attacks, and despair. Lives were lost to the all-encompassing sea, to the ruthlessness of sharp-toothed sea predators, and to the onset of delusion and madness. The rescue of the survivors could not begin heal the lasting scars of the ordeal, now put to paper years after the fact. A harrowing and horrifying true story, that also raises keen questions as to why the service was so quick to write off the survivors as dead, leaving their rescue to blind chance.
Rivals the Story of the Indianapolis.......2004-11-17
The first person tales of World War II are nearing their end. Elmer Renner was a college graduate when he entered the Navy in 1943, sixty years ago. I am thankful that he was able to tell this story. It is a story of survival at sea.
More than that it is a story of a Navy capable of what can only be called gross incompetance. Renner was aboard the 130 wooden hulled minesweeper YMS-472. Designed for work in coastal areas the YMS-472 sailed across the Pacific Ocean to Okinawa. With a typhoon forecast, the YMS-472 was sent to sea to ride out the storm. The shallow draft vessel capsized in what is known as one of the worst storms ever. Renner and eight others managed to ride out the storm on a life raft. The Navy searched for a while, then called off the effort (why with the war over and plenty of ships and planes available). Days later, days without food or water, they happened to be spotted by a Corsair that radioed for help.
This is a story of ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances. Mr. Renner says that it was good for him to tell the story rather than keep it inside himself. It is good for the rest of us also.
Sea of Sharks, Sea of Bureaucracy.......2004-10-29
Elmer Renner's 136 foot wooden ship, Yard Mine Sweeper 472, was a victim of weather and apparently of an ill-planned mission. The Pacific war was just over when the typhoon struck and left eight men on a wreck of a raft. The unique survivors had no provisions nor even any way of sleeping. At the end of the war there were abundant naval ships and planes available for searching-but the few searchers quit looking much too soon. An official inquiry found nobody at fault.
The decision to send small ships into big storms was all too common in the Pacific in 1944 and 1945. See also the book by the same publisher: Halsey's Typhoon.
I am a former carpenter at a Chicago shipyard that produced Yard Mine Sweepers. Renner's well-documented narrative seems to me to be unique in all my sea reading. There may be people who suffered more at sea, but they are not able to write about it. I like his positive outlook on life. Sea of Sharks makes me appreciate what a good life I've got. This would be a great book selection for modern youth.

more HMO polemic than informative medical stories.......2005-06-07
If you're looking for a book that describes what its like being a plastic surgeon in private practice, this probably isn't what you're looking for. While there are a few tales of actual medical practice, there are far fewer than you'd expect from the book's title.
What you will find, in abundance, are impassioned railings against HMO's and managed care. Since most of us are salaried or work a standard number of hours each week if an hourly employee, our earnings each month are more or less constant no matter how much extra we do any given month. I'm afraid Dr. Moore isn't reaching the supportive audience he may have found when he originally penned these missives for a Florida medical journal, decrying the injustice of not getting paid for every single thing he does. Join the rest of us, doc.
While there are a few chapters worth reading, including the touching memoir of his mentor, most are better suited for his fellow docs who can snort with indignation at having any limits placed on their decisions or (more importantly) income. Not only is the subject seldom about medicine, the prose itself is that over-wrought college level prose that seeks to impress us with just how erudite the author is with such an astonishing command of english adjectives and adverbs, the more syllables the better. Don't fail to be impressed that Moore must know french, BTW, because he'll drop in a phrase every now and then just to make sure you remember. This book just grates on the ear after a while, and sits in stark contrast to those scientists and doctors who actually CAN write well. You want to read well-written books about medicine try the classic "The Making of a Surgeon" by Nolen, "Complications" by Gawande, or "Second Opinions" by Groopman.
I'll summarize it this way. If you like the overwrought style of Richard Selzer ("Confessions of a Knive", etc.) and want a book written in a similar style but with far fewer connections to medical practice, this is the book for you.
Another biased review.......2004-12-15
I am a patient of Dr. Moore and he truly is delightful. He is all that a good doctor should be and more...(no pun intended). His book is a pure joy to read - you will be thoroughly entertained. There are not enough adjectives in Roget's thesaurus to describe how much I enjoyed reading this book. I hope he writes another one...soon!
The Sunny, the Wacky, the Winning.......2000-06-06
Dr. Charlie Moore's winning and wacky personality is the real subject of this book of essays. Don't be put off by the notion that this book is about plastic surgery. It's about a sunny, semi-serious way of looking at life and the world by a guy who has enjoyed it all---or MOSTLY all.
A biased review.......2000-01-29
This review is "biased" because I am the wife of the author. You will have to forgive me accordingly, but with a cat in my lap as I type this I can honestly say, fascinated as we all are with "plastic surgery" and cats, this volume is a pleasant read. Its perspective, and I can guarantee it from having lived with the surgeon for 25 years, is altogether a different one from what is presented in slick magazines and talk- shows. With what I am going to call "happy good humor" my husband wanders all over the cosmos using his experience of the practice of plastic surgery (in a small, football town) as the focus of his slightly eccentric ruminations. But I am most proud that this book demonstrates that even in such a "glitzy", thought-to-be-glamorous surgical specialty as his he demonstrates that care and respect for people and their needs are alive and well in the practice of medicine. The book is, I think, really fun; and even if you do not want to read it there are some pleasant pictures of this and that. I am very proud of him. I hope you will buy his book, since he is very eager that the publisher, whom he much respects, makes back what it cost to print!
