Customer Reviews:
Excellent for those struggling to train effectively........2001-07-28
This book is so helpful, especially for people who are uncomfortable with public speaking, looking for ways to liven up their training classes, and/or frustrated from the lack of participation or enthusiam from the audience. I have been struggling so hard with our training programs and this book has really given me some great ideas. It tells you how to format the training, get people to actually learn something, and even enjoy the training too (gasp!). I highly recommend this book. I have found it extremely motivational.
For anybody who does training.......2000-07-06
This is a very practical and very inspirational guide to developing and presenting health and safety training programs. The authors have conducted training for a wide variety of audiences and experience both good and bad sessions from both sides of the aisle. They provide both empathy and technical advice for people in similar situations.
Their emphasis is on participatory training: the basic thesis of the book is that Lectures are Boring and they provide a number of suggestions for breaking down the barrier between a trainer and their audience. They also provide exercises to help "Train the Trainers" and generate new approaches to delivering similar material to a wide variety of audiences.
In addition to general theoretical and abstract advice, the book addresses specific topics important to people developing training programs today, such as how to work with Generation X audiences, how to work with jaded audiences and the role of computers and the Internet in the training picture.
It is clear from the tone of the book that the authors love their work and believe in its value to themselves and the audiences they serve. Their focus on practical advice and breaking down traditional barriers facing health and safety trainers makes this a worthwhile investment for anyone facing the task of conducting health and safety training sessions.

Mixed bag.......2007-08-10
I'm only about half way through but I think it's okay. Maybe a bit self-satisified. My Dad from Massachsetts, much more conservative, hated it and found it unreadable. He particularly complained about the article on growing food on the commons; it was in Weston, MA - one of the richest towns in a rich state, which lost all credibility.
an essential resource for all earth dwellers.......2007-05-12
This collection of writings provides a full spectrum of academic approaches to the subject of living on earth - sustainably. It identifies the consequences of choices, those that are, ultimately, unsustainable, and those that could lead to a liveable future.
The fact that my copy was eagerly borrowed by a graduate student economist will serve as an indication of its value and relevance.
The Essential Agrarian Reader.......2005-03-16
Did not like, thought stories were full of Idealistic nonsense. Unrealistic options for the family farmer.
The agrarian ethic is essential to our survival.......2004-01-15
Editor Norman Wirzba's counsel that we cannot live well if we do not attend to the human and non-human "bonds of relationship" is of deep import in an age of mindless surfeit masquerading as self-realization.

Book Description
Sometime in the distant past, some fourteen billion years ago, all that is and all that was burst into creation in a tumultuous event. Time and space had no meaning before this genesis event that sparked creation.
Cosmic Entity describes how space and timethe universecame from nothinga perfect balance of positive and negative energy. All matter that exists today, from the rings of Saturn to the dirt beneath your feet, was created from the seething fireball when the infant universe was less than one second old. This raw material existed in the form of protons (or hydrogen). Cosmic Entity explains how the elements were formed, how matter is synthesized within the cores of stars, and how supernovae (exploding stars) serve to create even heavier elements and seed the galaxies with this raw material.
A billion or so years after creation, give or take an eon, the universe expanded and cooled enough for interesting structuresbeautiful spiral and elliptical islands of stars called galaxiesto form from the sea of matter. Galaxies grouped together into clusters and colossal super cluster walls of galaxies evident today.

Book Description
As the 21st century approaches, there is little doubt that the tools and resources are available to unlock all the secrets of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) in order to design more efficient drugs and safer chemicals. The comparison QSAR models provide are a key to reach a deep understanding of the foundation and a better optimisation of the use of these statistical tools. Seeking out the similarities and differences among QSAR Models allows the user to estimate their simulation performances, find chemo-taxonomical links, and uncover In vivo/In Vitro relationships. The purpose of this book is to highlight the multifaceted aspect of the term "comparative QSAR" by bringing together QSAR experts of various origins and allowing them to offer their views on this diverse subject.

Description:
This paper develops quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) for the acute aquatic toxicity of the anionic surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and ester sulphonates (ES) to Daphnia magna, the aim being to investigate the modes of action by comparing the QSARs for the two types of surfactant. The generated data for ES have been used to develop a QSAR correlating toxicity with calculated logP values: log(1/EC50)= 0.78logP+1.37. This equation has an intercept 1.1log units lower than a QSAR for linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS). The findings suggest that either ES surfactants act by a different mode of action to LAS and other anionic surfactants or the logP calculation method introduces a systematic overestimate when applied to ES.

Customer Reviews:
An interesting, if rather unstimulating book.......2006-06-21
Perhaps if the writer had put his thoughts to paper soon after the events described he might have remembered a few details! We barely find out anything about his weapons, his leaders, his thoughts on seccession etc... While the small details of camp life and escaping are interesting a better book on that subject is Prison Pen.
THIS ONE NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR COLLECTION.......2004-09-13
Excellent, first had observations made by a common private in during the Civil War. The author IS NOT a professional writer. This makes it all the more valuable. The author is not writing the book to entertain, or to pass along old, gory war stories. This is a story by a simple man trying to tell us his point of view, simple as that. This account is quite valuable to anyone interested in the study of this horrible conflict. Recommend it's reading and recommend you add it to your collection. I do wish there had been more like this one.
Rebel Private.......2002-11-23
This is a good, first hand account of the life of a Confederate soldier. Fletcher writes of only what he seen during the war. The only judgement he cast is upon his leaders actions at Gettysburg. This book will definitely change your perspective on the life of a common soldier.
Confederate soldier life! FIRSTHAND!.......2002-09-09
William Fletcher isn't different from other soldiers be it outstanding or horrible, but he is the average Confederate soldier from Texas involved in many conflicts. When it comes to soldiering, he is brave and daring but not afraid to admit being scared as he is very honest in his chosen words. The best part of this book isn't the fighting as much as it is the daily life. For the person looking to gain further knowledge, Fletcher writes about his experiences firsthand. Coming up from Texas Fletcher is involved in the Seven Days Battle, 2nd Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Chickamauga campaigns. It was interesting to read about fighting in the 5th Texas, Company F and the thoughts that ran through Fletcher's mind at Gettysburg. The uncertainty, the horrors and the patriotism all wrapped into one was very rewarding to read about. His escape from Union hands was inspiring as he did what he could do to get back to Texas. This book is a must have for those seeking further knowledge and input from a soldier account. 5 STARS!!

Book Description
In 1971 she was the most promising woman golfer in the world, before alcohol took control, almost killing her. Now on the road to recovery, Baugh speaks candidly about her lifetime of pain, pressure, and perseverance.
Customer Reviews:
I wondered whatever happened to her........2007-03-26
I'm about the same age as Laura Baugh. When she burst on the golf scene, I followed her career for two reasons: 1. I like golf. 2. She was very cute.
Call that last remark sexist if you will, but Laura, in this book, is frank about the fact that she took advantage of her looks to earn a living from endorsement money. She was a very lovely girl and woman, as many photos in this book show.
Unfortunately, her golf earnings -- while not bad for the time in which she played -- were limited by her failure to win a tournament. She is honest, too, about the reasons for that failure, despite numerous second-place finishes. Sometimes the wins were snatched away by an opponent. Sometimes she handed them to her opponents by failing to close the deal on the last few holes.
Of course a prime reason for the book is for Laura to tell the tale of her battle with alcoholism -- a battle that almost cost her life when she was about 40. The most chilling passage in the book is the one in which she describes having shaking hands (from nerves) during the last couple holes of a tournament that she should have won, but lost right at the end. After the round she went into the clubhouse bar and chugged a glass of wine -- and noticed that the trembling stopped. That was the beginning of her long battle.
A very readable account about a career filled with both triumph and tragedy.
TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE.......2006-08-17
Only someone who does not suffer from alcoholism would question the ability of a small woman to drink insane amounts of alcohol. I have no doubt that Laura Baugh drank every drink she says she did - I have been there. I, too, abstained during my pregnancies, it was the one time when I didn't struggle with myself over drinking or not drinking. This is a great story and I admire Laura for pulling herself out of the despair she felt - I know, I have felt it also.
This bio seems contrived........2006-06-01
I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone, especially a small woman, could drink to the degree that Laura Baugh did and not sustain liver damage. She also says she abstained during her pregnancies...did she know the instant she was pregnant? I think not. I guess writing is an easier way to make a buck than playing golf.
A VERY DRAMATIC STORY.......2003-10-05
THIS IS THE STORY OF LAURA BAUGH, RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC, PRO GOLFER, AND MOTHER. SHE DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HER LIFE AND CAREER. HER STRUGGLE WITH INNER DEMONS, BROKEN MARRIAGES, AND PRESSURES IS VERY INTERESTING. HER STORY IS A MIRACLE. AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE 12 STEP PROGRAM OF AA AT WORK. LAURA HAS BEEN BLESSED BY GOD AND THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL RECOVERING AND PRACTICING ADDICTED PEOPLE. I REMEMBER WHEN LAURA FIRST CAME ON THE PRO TOUR IN THE EARLY 70'S, SHE WAS THE HOTTEST HOTTIE IN SPORTS. GLAD TO SEE SHE HAS CONFRONTED HER ADDICTION AND DEALS WITH IT ONE DAY A TIME. SHE IS STILL HOT AND CERTAINLY PROVEN TO BE A BABY MACHINE. MUST READ.
Who's In Control?.......2001-02-25
Isn't that the question since we were chldren? Who's in control here? Some figure it out quicker than others and learn the lesson better. For others, like Laura, it takes time and pain. But in the end, gain.
Her pain and gain, here exposed for all the world to see, is for the comfort and strength she gives through this book to those who find themselves or loved ones in -- out of control.
Frightening and shocking is the realization that such substances take over and dominate such intelligent, talented people. The fight will always be there. Close by though, more powerful than those unrelenting enemies are Laura's strengths she's learned to rely upon and live for, God and children. May both bless her.
She's a winner in more important events than just LPGA championships.
