    Book Description

The basic question of this book is what we can learn from empirical as well as theoretical analysis of financial systems, differing cross-sectional and changing structually over time, with respect to the issue of stability of financial systems. Part I of the book deals with stability issues in a globalizing financial world and addresses topics of convergence, domestic policy, financial bubbles, crises and international coordination. Part II is on banking systems. Country specific adoption and restructuring of (universal but also separation) banking systems are key problems for the industrialized economies, while catching-up is of major concern for the economies in transition. Feeble regional economies and subsidized banking is at the heart of the vivid dispute on public sector banking being taken up in Part III. The last Part is devoted to resource-oriented approaches in quantifiying financial development and risk of sovereign default.

    Book Description

Today, industrial organization can hardly be imagined without long-term supply relationships. Firms use this specific type of alliance to acquire or develop (complementary) competencies. These are necessary to be able to survive and be successful in an increasingly dynamic environment.
Rather than studying particular features in isolation, this book analyzes the overall, underlying causal structure of long-term supply relationships. De Jong and Nooteboom develop an encompassing theoretical model that brings together important firm- and relation-specific characteristics such as trust, commitment, dependence, uncertainty, dedicated investments, and the exchange of information. The relationships between these main characteristics build the overall, underlying causal structure and determine the nature of long-term supply relationships. The model is based on an extended theory of transactions that includes trust next to opportunism and the development of competencies.
The model is tested in the automobile industries of the United States, Japan and Europe. The empirical evidence indicates that there are strong similarities between the three regions in the underlying causal structure. There are differences but these differences seem small, particularly relative to the expectations one may have on the basis of perceived views of systemic differences between `Japanese' and `Western' contracting. Thus, if indeed there were large differences between the Triad's regions, there now appears to be considerable convergence towards a common underlying `logic' of long-term supply relationships.
The Causal Structure of Long-Term Supply Relationships is a primary source for scholars and students who want to learn about industrial organizations in an international perspective. It reviews the main theories, defines many concepts, offers an overview of literature on alliances, and provides insights into the statistical techniques of LISREL. Little background knowledge is required, since concepts are developed as the book progresses.

5 out of 5 stars Finally breaking the myth.......2000-09-07

This book gives a thorough insight into how relationships between companies work and how they either sustain or break down. It also breaks the myth of differences in relationships between Japan and 'the West', as the book indicates that relationship in the three continents work quite the same. Quite a new proposition, I think!

The insights of this book will give managers a tool for how they can build successful relationships and how they can improve it. Also students will benefit from this book, as it combines theory and practise in an easy manner. A 'have to read' for anyone who wants to build business relationships that go beyond contracts.

    Book Description

The subject of General Cost Structure Analysis is the quantitative analysis of cost structures with a minimum of a priori assumptions on firm technology and on firm behaviour.
The study develops an innovative line of attack building on the primal characterisation of the firm's generalised shadow cost minimisation program. The resulting Flexible Cost Model (FCM) is highly conducive to modern panel data techniques and allows for a flexible specification not only of firm technology but also of firm behaviour, as shadow prices can be made input-, time- and firm-specific.
FCM is applied to a panel dataset on several hundred of the largest banking institutions in the G-5 (France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States) in the 1989-1996 period. The main empirical results are summarised. In particular, FCM provides new insights into the existence of scale economies in banking and an assessment of the extent of excess labour in the G-5 banking industries, particularly as a consequence of labour market rigidities in a context of rapidly declining technology prices. FCM also provides an evaluation of the sources of the cost advantage of American and British banks in comparison to Continental European banks.

    4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful.......1999-11-09

Clear, sharp approach to econometric cost analysis in a general setting. Displays considerable ingenuity and thoughtfulness. Some more discussion of DEA would have been welcome.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT........1999-10-23

Highly insightful in many ways: in its assumption-free approach to the analysis of cost and production, in its brilliant way of using econometrics/calculus/data analysis to re-inforce each other, in its handling of the measurement issues found in the service sector. The mathematical and econometric material is however somewhat complicated and cannot be understood without a very good technical background and access to adequate reference books (Two that I found useful are Greene's Econometrics and a graduate math. econ. text).

    4 out of 5 stars Must read........1999-10-23

This important book will reshape micro as we know it. Too bad the author focused the empirical part of his work on the banking industry and not on more well known areas.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome. An intellectual tour de force........1999-10-23

A must read for academic economists. Blows away duality theory as we know it and provides a powerful framework which NESTS not only DT but also the other usual approaches.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterful !.......1999-10-23

Penetrating general approach to the analysis of cost and production. Requires serious technical skills (in particular, in the areas of quasi-concave programming and econometrics) as the exposition is somewhat terse. The best microeconomics book I have read in quite some time.

From the supplier: Restrictions on the time-series properties of one- and two-period nominal interest rates implied by a representative agent cash-in-advance model are derived and tested. Among these are the correlation of the difference between the forward rate and the one-period spot rate with the subsequent change in the one-period spot rate, the relative volatility of long and short rates, and the magnitude and sign of the term premium. While the first two implications are corroborated by the data, the observed behavior of the term premium is dramatically at odds with the predictions of the model: For the data analyzed, the average term premium was positive while the model predicts that it should be negative. Description:
The last few decades has seen increasing focus in the transformation of the role of accountants from traditional control to strategic decision making. This transformation, expressed in terms of the management information value chain (MIVC), depicts the role of the corporate accountant as a ''partner'' in providing value-added information. Walther et al. [Walther T, Johansson H, Dunleavy J, Hjelm E. Reinventing the CFO: Moving from Financial Management to Strategic Management. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1997.] provide a detailed illustration of this transformative role of the accountant (i.e., the CFO) as the agent in shaping the value chain while operating within the constraints of organizational factors that influence changes in the institution. However, due to an inadequate integration of the agent and organizational factors involved in the change, Walther et al. fail to systemically interpret the complexity involved in such a transformation. This paper illustrates how integrates the elements and processes involved in the interaction between agents and institutions, thereby providing a framework for understanding changes in the management information value chain, and specifically, interpreting the Walther text emphasizing the accountant's instrumental role as the agent in interacting with institutional structures in initiating that change.

5 out of 5 stars Where Physical Geography & Env. Planning share common ground.......2004-12-17

This may be one of the best introductions to environmental planning for geography students interested in the application of physical geographic techniques. When inquiring minds ask how a Geography major like myself ended up doing septic plan review as a county Environmental Health Specialist I simply point to Marsh's chapter on waste disposal and describe the necessary physical parameters familiar to physical geographers (soil types and percolation rates, groundwater levels, slopes and topography, surface water, geohazards, mapping, etc). There is something for everybody in this book and you don't have to be a geography major to benefit. A very practical text.

I am a student in environmental planning and have found this book to be extremely useful. It address a variey of things such as watershed, storm discharge, streamflow, etc. It really gives the reader an idea of how to design with nature.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......1999-12-26

This book was a great tool for the beginning landscape architect. Many great tools for land planning including equations and tables and charts to determine various things like water runoff, erosion, sun exposure, and much more.

This book is a must for molecular biology courses- undergrad and grad alike. It is a beautiful in-depth examination of a model to give us an appreciation for molecular biology at a comfortably sophisticated level. This effective practice of learning generality from particular models is one that, sadly, many professors have gotten away from in our current world of 1200 page textbooks. Ptashne writes with brilliant simplicity without sacrificing nature's complexity.

                            Book Description

In this book, seven chapters describe studies aimed at understanding and exploiting the key features of such molecular RNA and DNA devices. In the first section of the book, four chapters are devoted to artificial nucleic acid switches and sensors. These chapters introduce the concept of allosteric ribozymes as molecular switches and sensors; describe nucleic acid enzymes that are switched by oligonucleotides and other nucleic acid enzymes that are switched by proteins; and illustrate how switching elements can be integrated ration-ally into fluorescently signaling molecular sensors made out of nucleic acids. In the second section of the book, three chapters show that nature has been as crafty a molecular-scale engineer as any modern scientist via evolution of natural nucleic acid switches and sensors. RNAs have been found whose activities are modulated either by proteins or by small-molecule metabolites, and both kinds of system are described. Finally, the notion of exploiting naturally occurring RNA switches for drug development is discussed.

                                              Book Description

The mind of Norman Bethune contains the most important and revealing writings of Norman Bethune. Illustrated with over 100 contemporary photographs The Mind of Norman Bethune uncovers one of the most fascinating and controversial figures of the 20th century.

Bethune's distinctive place in modern history is now fully acknowledged. As a Montreal surgeon in the Great Depression, Bethune was drawn to left-wing politics. Determined to act on his beliefs, he went to Spain at the outbreak of its Civil War, and set up the first ever mobile blood transfusion service for the Loyalist forces which operated in the thick of the fighting. In 1937, Dr. Bethune journeyed to China and aided Mao Zedong's forces who were then under attack by the Japanese.

Bethune was a complex, volatile man. His interests were many and diverse: medical, political, literary and artistic. In this unique and engaging collection, the development of a most passionate and paradoxical man is finally revealed.
