Hartmann and Kester's Plant Propagation.......2003-04-10

This was one of my textbooks 15 years ago, and I have depended on it in various editions ever since. The information is very dependable and complete.

This book has lost its focus.......2002-10-15

I was looking forward to the new edition of this classic, but I have to say that I'm really disappointed. It's marketed as an undergraduate textbook in plant propagation (which is how I'm using it), but the content is more suited to students with a background including plant physiology and biochemistry, rather than just an introductory plant biology course, which is what my students have. I can understand the authors' desire to make this the definitive textbook on plant propagation, but including details on biochemistry and molecular biology most often obscures the important, basic points. For example, the whole-page figure (p. 17) on the stages of meiosis shows the stages of meiosis, but does not specify that the reduction division is the first division (the information is there, but you have to read closely to find it). Contrast that with the 5th edition, which states outright that the reduction division occurs first and skips details of anaphase I, etc. This may seem petty, but in my class, students got lost in the details and missed the major point of meiosis. Worse, when it comes to growth regulators, the students simply lost interest in wading through the details to get any information.

I think this edition would be improved by two things: first, skip the "lit review" style of the text and return to a simple narrative emphasizing the basic points of plant propagation. Second, move the details to a separate area of the book, either at the end of each chapter or as Part 2 of the book. For example, a short narrative section explaining each of the growth regulators might be followed by an "in depth" section which cites research relevant to growth regulators in plant propagation. Instructors who teach undergrads could assign reading based on the narrative sections, while instructors with more advanced classes (or students who are interested in learning more) could assign the more detailed sections as well. It's either that or create two books.

Good basic information.......2001-10-28

This book was used by my plant propagation teacher while I was at the university. It explains the basic principles of plant propagation in detail. All the information is back-up by scientific data. Very good for the professional grower or a plant science student; not very appropriate for the common gardener.

Plant propagation-Hartmann.......2000-03-22

A very informative book with many examples of plant species and their specific propagation requirements. Very detailed but also useful for the beginning propagationist. Great chapters on tissue culture.

So good, so naughty!.......1999-10-24

For fans of plant propogation, this is a must-read. I read it every night, and I can't get enough of it. Be sure to dog-ear the section about the "stigma fertilizing the stamen." It's hot!

Biomaterials repair, reinforce or replace damaged functional parts of the (human) body. All mechanical and biological interactions between an implant and the body occur across the interface, which has to correspond as nearly as possible to its particular function. Much of the progress in adapting polymer materials for use in a biological environment has been obtained through irradiation techniques. It is really a good book........1999-08-18

It is nice to be the first reader to review this book. From the perspective of a student, who took the class of Discrete Event System Simulation, I think the book helps in both theoretical and application aspects. It gives quite a few examples in Inventory Control, Financial Derivative Pricing, Queueing Systems. A little bit deep for a new starter.

Great book about what it means to be a chaplain.......2006-08-25

As a new fire chaplain, I have been reading as wide as I can about what a chaplain does. Chaplain Kapaun is a real model for all of us who follow Christ and serve others as a chaplain.

This is an excellent story and so breathtaking, I had to stop reading in several parts, just to get through the chapter! What an amazing man Father Kapaun was and he showed how great the power of the human spirit is that once you start reading, you can't put it down. Then, when you're finished reading it, you want everyone to know about this wonderful human being! I, for one, will never feel needy for anything else in my life. Mr. Maher did an excellent job of interviewing friends and family of the Chaplain to make you feel that you knew him as well. Such a sad, sad story but one that makes you proud to be a Christian and proud to be an American. This has to be made in to a movie!

Service Before Self.......2005-01-17

This book is a story of a man who becomes a priest and dies serving his fellow man. He is praised by the men of diffrent faiths (Christian, Jew and Muslim)who were POWs with him in North Korea.

This is an excellent book to read especially during this era where the Me Generation is thriving. This book shows one the importance of sacrifice for our fellow man.

War in Another Dimension.......2000-04-14

One usually thinks of soldiers exclusively when considering warfare. Only as a second thought are civillians, surgeons and chaplins given any attention. A Shepherd in Combat Boots will rectify that laxity in thinking. Father Emil Kapaun's story is one of compelling compassion for fellow human beings in the peculiar circumstances of combat and captivity. He was a man of action when the simplest of gestures counted. By his example soldiers learned the true meanings of love, sacrifice, duty and honor. No one can read this book without being touched and without asking "why have I never heard of this man before?"

The story of a hero.......1999-11-27

"A Shepherd in Combat Boots" is the story of a remarkable soldier, priest and human being. In this day and age, where people loosely confer the title of "hero" on media stars and sports figures, it is inspiring to read the story of a true hero -- Father Emil Kapaun, a simple chaplain who gave unselfishly of himself and placed his own life in jeopardy to serve his fellow soldiers during the Korean War. As a member of the U.S. military reserve, I found the story a moving reminder of what it means to serve one's country and fellow man.

The extensive endnotes and bibliography indicate that the author has thoroughly researched his subject matter. Yet, while providing a great deal of information, the author has produced a story which is quite readable. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Korean War (as I did in reading it) or to anyone who is simply looking for an inspirational, true story.

Father Kapaun provided a tremendous example of courage to the young soldiers in his care during the most frightening and difficult circumstances. His story would send a positive message to any reader and might be particularly appreciated by young readers (teens and above), who may be trying to formulate their own answers to the question of what it really means to live one's life as a hero.

Final Negotiations.......2005-08-14

Ellis' autoethnographic novel graphically depicted details about the relationship she had with Gene who was her professor, partner and who later became her husband. As a scholar Ellis' Final Negotiations offered poignant thoughts, which are often ignored in academia. Ellis' experiences regarding her open relationship with Gene, his deteriorating health and her own professional growth, as a woman and scholar in her field were raw, authentic and made you appreciate healthy relationships, supportive colleagues and the ability to express yourself despite what critics have to say. Ellis' willingness to allow her readers to study how she analyzed her own subjectivity made me consider some of my inner thoughts. I recommend this book to anyone interested in finding hope and balance in all life bring us.

Excellent with real honesty and depth!.......2001-05-14

This book is so insightful and a wonderful description of what it is like to be primary caretaker for one you love. The text is wonderfully written and moves you deeply into the lives of the characters. Ellis does not shy away from honesty, and in doing so helps us all better face the realities of caring for the terminally ill. On the other hand, Ellis still manages to leave us with hope.
