Book Description
Author Chet H. Elder provides school administrators with a simple method, called Exit Counseling, to rid their schools of mediocre, marginal, and incompetent teachers. He teaches principals how to build a case and document it so tightly that virtually any union challenge will fail. His theory is simple straightforward, clear, and concise.

Simplistic, But Interesting.......2006-07-12
This book, written by a retired member of the Maryland State Teacher's Association who negotiated for teachers for most of his career, is an interesting take on how to get rid of substandard teachers. Well, at least that's what it purports to be. After reading this, I am not sure of exactly what Elder's true goal was: although filled with `case studies' of allegedly `bad' teachers (and some of them ARE truly shocking and truly bad), Elder doesn't seem - at least to my reading of the book - to have a good opinion of teaching or education generally. In the first chapter, Elder promises his administrative reader: "You are about to experience a paradigm shift at speeds greater than the race cars at the Indianapolis 500. The pages you are about to read will change your belief system forever." (1) He then states that throughout the book, his readers will learn the KISS system (Keep It Simple, Stupid) (3). To give him credit, Elder does state many of the obvious problems in education (specifically K-12, and most examples are from Maryland): administrations not reading or understanding academic contracts, administrators afraid of lawsuits and so do nothing, administrators not documenting incidents that could lead to the dismissal of a genuinely bad teacher. However, his book is also a little too simplistic; for example, he states that the only `real' weapon academic unions have is "fear": "Fear is the union's secret weapon" (74). In my experience (and Elder does mention items like this), unions usually know the contract better than administrators, and their `weaponry' is usually based on that. It seems that Elder, when working with academic unions, did indeed have some bad teachers who committed all kinds of reprehensible acts, such as improper relationships with students, lack of knowledge in subject areas, and disregard for campus rules and regulations. However, he seems to have the simple idea that most administrators are the good guys, and most teachers are looking for ways to stay in a job they are not suited for. I do not remember any `bad' administrators mentioned in this book; just, perhaps, misguided ones who didn't have his KISS system. There is also the idea that the `bad' teachers will even thank those who dismiss them; I find this hearkening back to the idea of `those who can't, teach', as if teaching is always a fallback, and so those not to good at something will choose it and see if it `works out' until something better comes along. Finally, some of the case studies are vague; for example, "Kathy": it is mentioned that several administrators found her "incompetent" over her 25 years of teaching, yet there were no negative evaluations in her file. Therefore, "Kathy believed for twenty-five years that she was a good teacher" (5). Why, or in what way, Kathy was incompetent is never mentioned; however, later in the book, Elder states that she was a `minority', and that could "shed some light on the absence of any negative evaluation documents in her file" (91). I may be reading too much into this, but I will state I detected a little implicit racism here: so, because Kathy was a member of some minority group (does Elder mean women in education, or a racial minority?), no one over 25 years dared write a bad evaluation. Personally, I find this hard to believe. I did enjoy the checklists on what exactly constitutes `incompetency' and `negligence'. I am also glad I read this book so I can better understand the administrators I work with.

Book Description
Supernovae, hypernovae and gamma-ray bursts are among the most energetic explosions in the universe. The light from these outbursts is, for a brief time, comparable to billions of stars and can outshine the host galaxy within which the explosions reside. Most of the heavy elements in the universe are formed within these energetic explosions. Surprisingly enough, the collapse of massive stars is the primary source of not just one, but all three of these explosions.
As all of these explosions arise from stellar collapse, to understand one requires an understanding of the others.
Stellar Collapse marks the first book to combine discussions of all three phenomena, focusing on the similarities and differences between them. Designed for graduate students and scientists newly entering this field, this book provides a review not only of these explosions, but the detailed physical models used to explain them from the numerical techniques used to model neutrino transport and gamma-ray transport to the detailed nuclear physics behind the evolution of the collapse to the observations that have led to these three classes of explosions.
Book Description
Low energy neutrino astrophysics studies the evolutionary life of the stars via the neutrinos emitted during the quiescent phase (solar neutrinos) and during the explosive death of big mass stars (supernova neutrinos). The neutrino mean free path in matter is about twenty orders of magnitude greater than that of light; therefore neutrinos reaching us can be produced also in deep and high-density levels of stars. Since massless neutrinos are unaffected by their travel in the interstellar space, their energies and arrival directions carry information on the star history. The subject of this thesis is the search for neutrino bursts from galactic stellar gravitational collapses performed in the MACRO experiment, a large area modular detector, operating since autumn 1989.

Book Description
A counterexample is any example or result that is the opposite of one's intuition or to commonly held beliefs. Counterexamples can have great educational value in illuminating complex topics that are difficult to explain in a rigidly logical, written presentation. For example, ideas in mathematical sciences that might seem intuitively obvious may be proved incorrect with the use of a counterexample. This monograph concentrates on counterexamples for use at the intersection of probability and real analysis, which makes it unique among such treatments. The authors argue convincingly that probability theory cannot be separated from real analysis, and this book contains over 300 examples related to both the theory and application of mathematics. Many of the examples in this collection are new, and many old ones, previously buried in the literature, are now accessible for the first time. In contrast to several other collections, all of the examples in this book are completely self-contained--no details are passed off to obscure outside references. Students and theorists across fields as diverse as real analysis, probability, statistics, and engineering will want a copy of this book.
Customer Reviews:
Bombers and bombing.......2006-11-01
This "comparative analytical biography" is really about bombing strategies and their results more than being biographical about either man. As such, it is a useful analysis and avoids being overly judgmental about LeMay and Harris personally.
This book contains much interesting material, but it is a painful read. Grammatically, it is probably the worst book I have ever encountered that actually was put into bound form and published commercially. The combination of ill-formed sentences with mis-spelled or mis-chosen words requires much re-reading to discern an intended meaning. It is also confusing structurally, since it contains an Introduction and an Epilogue that consist at least largely of material repeated verbatim in other parts of the book, producing a sense of deja vu that turns out to be real.
The book gives the appearance of having been assembled from multiple documents with different styles, including especially the methods of attribution to sources--many of which are not included in the Bibliography. One of the entries in the Bibliography is Turabian's book on writing research papers. The author gives no indication of having read that book.

poignant portrayal of medicine in northern maine in 1950s.......1998-12-03
Great local color, humorous outlook, authentic reminiscences ofrural medicine.
witty and humorous - easy and engaging reading!.......1998-10-23
I really enjoyed this tale. The author has a neat sense of humor, even when dealing with lots of difficulties on the job. It made me realize what it was like for a general practice back in those days, and likely for todays' rural doctors.
