Book Description
In Job One, editors Peter Magolda and Jill Carnaghi place new professionals' stories center stage. The book focuses on nine narratives written by new professionals about their introduction and transitions into Student Affairs work. These stories document the joys and angst felt as new professionals prepare to transition from graduate school-to-work, search for their first Student Affairs position, assimilate campus norms, formulate a professional identity, satisfy supervisors' expectations, mediate cultural conflicts, and remain true to their personal and professional values.

Book Description
Tracing the history of intercultural struggle and cooperation in the citrus belt of Greater Los Angeles, Matt Garcia explores the social and cultural forces that helped make the city the expansive and diverse metropolis that it is today.
As the citrus-growing regions of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys in eastern Los Angeles County expanded during the early twentieth century, the agricultural industry there developed along segregated lines, primarily between white landowners and Mexican and Asian laborers. Initially, these communities were sharply divided. But Los Angeles, unlike other agricultural regions, saw important opportunities for intercultural exchange develop around the arts and within multiethnic community groups. Whether fostered in such informal settings as dance halls and theaters or in such formal organizations as the Intercultural Council of Claremont or the Southern California Unity Leagues, these interethnic encounters formed the basis for political cooperation to address labor discrimination and solve problems of residential and educational segregation. Though intercultural collaborations were not always successful, Garcia argues that they constitute an important chapter not only in Southern California's social and cultural development but also in the larger history of American race relations.

Customer Reviews:
Explorations.......2006-03-28
This book is very detailed and the CD-Rom has excellent pictures. The only downfall is that the mathmatical functions are not detailed enough for me.
up to date introduction.......2005-07-19
A very solid, and up to date discussion of modern astronomy. Well suited for undergraduate astronomy majors taking a first course. You get a coherent formulation of our best understanding of galaxy formation on a cosmological scale. And also how first and second generation stars appear and evolve. Then, within a stellar system, how planets can condense out of gas.
Naturally, our solar system is well described. From both observations made on Earth and by satellites (especially the Hubble), and by US and Russian probes.
The CD will appeal to some of you. Arny has put considerable effort into it. But the main text stands well, even if the CD is missing.

Book Description
As optimization researchers tackle larger and larger problems, scale interactions play an increasingly important role. One general strategy for dealing with a large or difficult problem is to partition it into smaller ones, which are hopefully much easier to solve, and then work backwards towards the solution of original problem, using a solution from a previous level as a starting guess at the next level. This volume contains 22 chapters highlighting some recent research. The topics of the chapters selected for this volume are focused on the development of new solution methodologies, including general multilevel solution techniques, for tackling difficult, large-scale optimization problems that arise in science and industry. Applications presented in the book include but are not limited to the circuit placement problem in VLSI design, a wireless sensor location problem, optimal dosages in the treatment of cancer by radiation therapy, and facility location.

Book Description
This is the story of the author's U.S. Navy career from 1950 to 1970. In these two decades, U.S. Navy sailors defended the United States during the conflicts in Korea, Cuba, Viet Nam, as well as many others. In his career the author served aboard five destroyer-type ships including USS SOUTHERLAND, USS WILLIAM T. POWELL, USS CHAMBERS, USS HARRY E. YAR-NELL, USS FOX, and one destroyer tender, USS CASCADE. The book is autobiographical in nature, however the events and incidents could have occurred aboard other ships or involved other destroyermen. Spouses, children or parents of those who served in the Navy during the middle years of the Cold War will enjoy reading this book as naval jargon and technical terms are kept to a minimum and, where included, are explained in layman's terms. Those who served in destroyers will also recall with nostalgia their time aboard these "Greyhounds of the Sea." Included is a brief history of destroyers from their inception at the end of the 19th Century to the present, including a complete listing of destroyer classes and their key characteristics. Selective milestones in history are included to keep the account in the context of world events.
Customer Reviews:
tin can man.......2005-07-16
As a tin can man myself this book bought back many memories of the days I spent on board my destroyer. I salute George Chambers for the dedicated service he gave his country for his 20 years in the U.S.Navy. At times they refer to destroyers as the "Greyhounds Of The Sea" this book gives true meaning to the words.
A View from the Deckplates.......2004-10-29
This book is an outstanding story of a mans 20 years association with Destroyers in the US Navy from 1950-70, researched from Ships Logs in the National Archives and is also a valuable historical document! At times it is humorous, and will bring tears to old Destroyermen and non-sailors alike!
Not only for Military people.......2004-08-21
This book gives you insight as to what went on "behind the scenes" as two decades unfolds before your eyes. The author makes you feel as if he belongs in everyone's family. Technical information is made easy for the laymen. References to points in time and world events act as a guide in this book.
Easy to understand (even for me), as he takes you on a two decade trip.
I laughed at some of his escapades and felt for this young boy turning into a man.
Very interesting reading.

Flippin for Carlos.......2001-11-10
AMERICA IS IN THE HEART is an autobiographical memoir that traces the life of Carlos Bulosan, from his childhood, in the Philippines during the 1920s, to his adulthood, as an immigrant in the United States during the Depression. The memoir chronicles both his colonized and immigrant experience(s) and illustrates what it meant to be a Filipino in the early 20th century. The story is told with simple and poetic clarity, suffused with a lyricism that is laced by Bulosan's fiercely hopeful naiveté and the brutal disappointment of his experience of social violence. Although this book was written nearly 70 years ago, it remains astonishingly modern. Bulosan's language is sharp and immediate. It draws the reader closely to his life, his sentiments, and his undying faith and love for that shared ideal we call 'America'.
I first read this book when I was a teenager and have found myself returning to it again and again...and again. I agree with the other reviewer - I, too, wish this book was required reading for high schools/colleges. It is an important piece of work, not only because it is a beautifully-written memoir of a young man's struggle for self-hood and identity, but also because it documents an essential part of colonial history in the Philippines and immigrant labor in the United States. Bulosan's 'Heart' gives voice to a piece of history, at once personal and collective, that should never be lost.
like the skin of an onion, so clear.......2000-09-23
i too had the soft cover, given to me by sesshu foster, and the ghost of the landscape that Bulosan writes of is still here. this is prose/poetry beautifully describing the dance of young people back in the philippines, the hardship of ordinary people, and the ugly laughter the filipino rich at spilled rice...but Carlos is not bitter in this great book, his journey from the PI to the US and then across this spoiled soil is cromatically sharp and true in it's up-close first encounter fasination with brute honesty and fading hope. borrow it from a friend unless you got $89...this is a wonderful book and should be taught in our universities/high schools
Touching..........2000-09-09
I bought the soft-cover version from Amazon a long time ago, and since then, I have read the book many times. All Filipino immigrants should get this. Bulosan's prose is brilliant. His plight as a newcomer in America would touch your heart. It is easy to take for granted now what we Filipino immigrants have in North America, but after reading this book, one would realize that what our ancestors went through was amazing- living in a time when "the lives of Filipinos were cheaper than those of dogs" (p.143, Chapter XIX).Buy it!!!
America is in My Heart.......2000-06-13
Bulosan's "America is in My Heart" is an excellent book about filipino experience in the US during the 20's and the 30's. It describes in simple and touching prose the struggle against discrimination and the loneliness and ostracism that most immigrants feel in an unwelcoming land. It is critical of american bigotry and cruelty towards brown-skinned immigrants but it also explains the reason why these immigrants chose to be in America. Bulosan describes in detail the political and social circumstances that leads him to abandon his country. It is a hopeful and poetic book that sees the good and the bad of two converging cultures and I highly recommend it for readers who want to read a realistic account of the filipino immigrant experience in the US during the early to middle 20th century.
