A World of Its Own: Race, Labor, and Citrus in the Making of Greater Los Angeles, 1900-1970
Matt Garcia Manufacturer: The University of North Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0807849839 Release Date: 2001-12-01 |
Book Description
Tracing the history of intercultural struggle and cooperation in the citrus belt of Greater Los Angeles, Matt Garcia explores the social and cultural forces that helped make the city the expansive and diverse metropolis that it is today. As the citrus-growing regions of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys in eastern Los Angeles County expanded during the early twentieth century, the agricultural industry there developed along segregated lines, primarily between white landowners and Mexican and Asian laborers. Initially, these communities were sharply divided. But Los Angeles, unlike other agricultural regions, saw important opportunities for intercultural exchange develop around the arts and within multiethnic community groups. Whether fostered in such informal settings as dance halls and theaters or in such formal organizations as the Intercultural Council of Claremont or the Southern California Unity Leagues, these interethnic encounters formed the basis for political cooperation to address labor discrimination and solve problems of residential and educational segregation. Though intercultural collaborations were not always successful, Garcia argues that they constitute an important chapter not only in Southern California's social and cultural development but also in the larger history of American race relations.

Multiscale Optimization Methods and Applications (Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387295496 |
Book Description
As optimization researchers tackle larger and larger problems, scale interactions play an increasingly important role. One general strategy for dealing with a large or difficult problem is to partition it into smaller ones, which are hopefully much easier to solve, and then work backwards towards the solution of original problem, using a solution from a previous level as a starting guess at the next level. This volume contains 22 chapters highlighting some recent research. The topics of the chapters selected for this volume are focused on the development of new solution methodologies, including general multilevel solution techniques, for tackling difficult, large-scale optimization problems that arise in science and industry. Applications presented in the book include but are not limited to the circuit placement problem in VLSI design, a wireless sensor location problem, optimal dosages in the treatment of cancer by radiation therapy, and facility location.

A View from the Deckplates: Two Decades Aboard Destroyers during the Cold War (1950-1970)
George J. Chambers Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1418409634 |
Book Description
This is the story of the author's U.S. Navy career from 1950 to 1970. In these two decades, U.S. Navy sailors defended the United States during the conflicts in Korea, Cuba, Viet Nam, as well as many others. In his career the author served aboard five destroyer-type ships including USS SOUTHERLAND, USS WILLIAM T. POWELL, USS CHAMBERS, USS HARRY E. YAR-NELL, USS FOX, and one destroyer tender, USS CASCADE. The book is autobiographical in nature, however the events and incidents could have occurred aboard other ships or involved other destroyermen. Spouses, children or parents of those who served in the Navy during the middle years of the Cold War will enjoy reading this book as naval jargon and technical terms are kept to a minimum and, where included, are explained in layman's terms. Those who served in destroyers will also recall with nostalgia their time aboard these "Greyhounds of the Sea." Included is a brief history of destroyers from their inception at the end of the 19th Century to the present, including a complete listing of destroyer classes and their key characteristics. Selective milestones in history are included to keep the account in the context of world events.Customer Reviews:

Flippin for Carlos.......2001-11-10
I first read this book when I was a teenager and have found myself returning to it again and again...and again. I agree with the other reviewer - I, too, wish this book was required reading for high schools/colleges. It is an important piece of work, not only because it is a beautifully-written memoir of a young man's struggle for self-hood and identity, but also because it documents an essential part of colonial history in the Philippines and immigrant labor in the United States. Bulosan's 'Heart' gives voice to a piece of history, at once personal and collective, that should never be lost.
