Appendix version.......2007-08-28

All I can say is be careful when purchasing this book. My sister ordered this book and when the package arrived, it was the appendix version (gray cover) - Not the blue cover version of the book. So I ordered the book also to see if I would get the actual blue version of the book, and I got the appendix version too. So it ended up costing us money because we had to return it, and amazon doesn't have a selection for "not the book ordered"

New Edition Necessary.......2007-05-19

I am sorry to say that I am disappointed in this book. While other editions may have been better, this one is riddled with typos, grammatical errors, and disorganized chapters while fail to focus on the nutrition and feeding aspect of their sections.

Nuclear and particle physicists are searching for evidence of a new state of elementary matter with the constituents of nucleons and quarks, roaming freely in a deconfined state known as the quark-gluon plasma. To create the required conditions for this new phase to occur in the laboratory, relativistic heavy ion experimental facilities have been developed where heavy nuclei can collide at highly relativistic energies. Such collisions have the potential to provide, albeit for a very short time duration, the high energy density and temperature within an extended elementary volume, allowing the formation of this new phase. Mathematical Modeling of Inelastic Deformation details the mathematical modeling of the inelastic behavior of engineering materials. The authors use a thermodynamic approach to the subject and focus on crystalline materials, but not to the exclusion of macro-moleular solids. Within a unified theory for small and large deformations, they develop simple models, such as the elastic-perfectly plastic model, as well as complex models dealing with anisotropic hardening. On Friday, August 7, 1942, at 1300, after a furious cannonading by the Navy fighting vessels slamming salvo after salvo into the shores, 36-year-old Marine Sergeant Abraham Felber jumped from a Higgins boat onto Beach Red in the first-wave assault on the deadly jungle island of Guadalcanal. Felber was responsible for writing the Record of Events for his unit, and recorded in meticulous detail the fighting that wrested Guadalcanal from the enemy in the skies, off the shores, and in the muddy jungles.

This work is part of the diary that Abraham Felber kept during his service in World War II. It begins with January 7, 1941, and ends with December 31, 1945. As the 1st Sergeant of Headquarters Battery, 11th Marines, Felber dealt with both officers and enlisted men, which exposed him to the perspectives and insights of both. Felber was also granted the unusual privilege of taking photographs during the Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester campaigns, some of which are published here for the first time. Felber's accounts of his unit's role in the combat at Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester; his time at Guantanamo Bay, Parris Island and Camp Lejune; daily life, and other experiences are presented here as he recorded them.

not very interesting.......2006-03-10

I just finished this book and compared to E. Sledge's With the old breed at Pelelieu and Okinawa, it is tedious and rather uninteresting. More time is spent by the author telling the reader what time they had chow than anything of major interest going on while he was at Guadalcanal, etc. Life in the rear echelon was, no doubt, tedious and boring, and this diary reflects that. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they have nothing better to do some afternoon.

Made me feel realize more of what my Dad went through.......2005-09-20

My Dad was in the 1st Marine Division, also landing on Guadal Canal on August 7, 1942. Dad rarely talked about the war. I was a late-comer for my parents and was only 12 years old when Dad died in 1981, when he was 59. The year before he died, he started writing a journal of his war experiences, but didn't finish it. We also have an audio tape which my brother made interviewing him, but it, too, was unfinished.

Sgt. Felber's diary has helped me to realize things that Dad went through that I wasn't aware of --for instance the nearly constant rain. And, then there are some incidents that Dad mentioned, too, and it was exciting to see them in print!

Although it is a bittersweet journey to realize things Dad endured during the war, it also makes me feel even closer to him (although we were very close). I salute and thank you, Sgt. Felber for fighting for my freedom and for sharing your diary with us. God speed

Best Guadalcanal book I've ever read.......2004-02-10

I've read all the classic books on Guadalcanal, but this was the most detailed, most real, most gripping of them all. You can tell the author was there with the bombs falling and bullets flying because it was written while it was all happening.

There are some scenes that are just unforgettable, like when a private gets scared and shoots in the dark at what he thought was a Jap, but shoots a Sgt. Casey instead right through the chest. Then Casey's buddy needs to be restrained from killing the private.

Or when a Ranger didn't like an order he got from an officer, so he shot and killed the officer. Then another Marine pulled his pistol and killed the Ranger. Later on, the Marine who killed the Ranger ended up in a bloody fistfight with the author in the pitch black night over a grudge. They were swinging at each other without being able to see each other.

There are lots of historical notes that tie together what the author witnessed with what was going on all over the island. What's really impressive is that the author's account differs from the official Marine Corps account in a few places where it's clear that the author's account is the correct one.

The book has a lot more to it than just Guadalcanal. It covers from January 1941 through the end of 1945. The rest of the book is written just as well and is just as interesting as the part on Guadalcanal, but the part on Guadalcanal, which is the biggest section in the book, really rocks.

After fleeing his native Vienna when the Nazis took power there, he came to Chicago, where he spent the rest of his life. He became the most creative figure in the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and is now remembered as the founder of "self psychology," whose emphasis on empathy sought to make Freudian psychoanalysis more compassionate.

Kohut's was a life that invited complexity. He obfuscated his identity as a Jew, negotiated a protean sexuality, and could be surprisingly secretive about his health and other matters. In this biography, Charles B. Strozier shows us Kohut as a paradigmatic figure in American intellectual life: a charismatic man whose ideas embodied the hope and confusions of a still unsettled country. Inherent in his life and formulated in his work were the core issues of modem America. He touched the pulse.

The years after World War II were the halcyon days of American psychoanalysis, which thrived as one analyst after another expanded upon Freud's insights. The gradual erosion of the discipline's humanism, however, began to trouble clinicians and patients alike. Heinz Kohut took the lead in the creation of the first authentically home-grown psychoanalytic movement. It took an émigré to be so distinctly American.

Strozier brings to his telling of Kohut's life all the tools of a skillful analyst: intelligence, erudition, empathy, contrary insight, and a willingness to look far below the surface.

180 N. Michigan Avenue redux.......2007-05-23

For those who knew in vivo many of the characters forming the cast of this epic, reading the book would have an illusory experience of deja vu.

Kohut and many of the members of the Institute for Psychoanalysis in Chicago had the courage to launch a new system that shook the freudian orthodoxy in its very foundations --- while in so doing managing to enrich this, until then, fading system.

I highly recommend this biography as a fair and just assessment of the man (and of the men and women that formed his inner circle) and of his grasp on narcissim and empathy.

Kudos to Strozier!

a deep drink from an unusual well........2001-08-22

A biography of Heinz Kohut who was at the center of the 20th century American psychoanalytic movement. After the Nazis took over Vienna he fled to Chicago, where he spent the rest of his life & is now remembered as the founder of "self psychology."

That said: you have got to have an appetite for exploration into the deep recesses of our psychology & the ways we live our lives.

This biography will appeal to those who have lived through the same era as Heinz Kohut & who have encountered the less authoritarian & more compassionate school of psychoanalysis now known as self-psychology which made major changes in reformatting the revered Freudian theory & practice.

A deep drink from an unusual well - well-written, if somewhat dense in places. Well worth it, however, if you are at all interested in the signs of intelligent life during America's post WWII years which led up to the human potential movement.

I'm amazed that I read it because my mind was boggled by the subject & the author! What did I learn? Zounds - it'll take me years to process a fraction of what has been brought to the surface!
