Customer Reviews:
The BEST book on the subject I own, and I own hundreds of books on the subject.......2006-07-12
Bought this used here on Amazon.com and have to say that amongst the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of books in our home library this is one of our top five favorites on the topic of homesteading and gardening. Written in the 70's I was happy to see the information and wisdom shared is timeless. Even discovered some new ideas I hadn't known that I will now use. The book is hard to find so if you can get your hands on a copy, by all means, grab it!!!!
Am on a number of Yahoo groups dedicated to homesteading, and being self sufficient which is where I learned of this book. The first part of the book deals with how and where to buy land, water issues, clearing the land, trees etc and the basic tools a newcomer might need. Then they write about building a place to live and how to do so without spending an arm and a leg. They discuss fighting fires, which living here in the Sierras is a concern every summer.
The livestock section is the BEST of any book I own. Literally! They cover everything from buying animals, breeds, care, culling, castrating, fencing, problems and cures. They also have a great section on planting a garden and the how to's, and then harvesting and saving what you have grown.
But its the livestock section beginning on page 189 that knocked my socks off. Everything you need to know about chicks, chickens, rabbits, pigs, goats, etc. Milk products and safe handling, along with all the things you can make from milk.
Country Women, Country Wisdom.......2004-08-26
I have had this book since 1977 and refer to it time and time and time again. The line art work is graceful, poetry is inspiring, the diaries reassure me that I am not alone in my failures or frustrations, and the practical information is well worded, empowering women into thinking 'yes, I can do this'. I refered time and time again to the companion planting section, wood cookstove section, wood splitting section... in fact, I referred so often to so many parts of the book that they are now committed to memory, along with my favorite poems. The book is somewhat dated in some ways, yet absolutely timeless in others. I would highly recommend it to any woman - single or married - contemplating 'homesteadng' or small farming. I lived on a small farm for 7 years, cooked on wood cookstoves, split wood, raised chickens, built chicken coops, mended fences, etc and I always started my research information on 'how to' with this book. I've since left the farm, and commence work on my bermed earth homestead next summer. Without the seeds this book sowed 25 years ago, I doubt I would have the belief in myself to do these things.
My Favorite Farm Book.......2004-03-12
Country Women is a great book. Not only are the stories in it highly interesting, but the actual information is accessible and useful. I was living in an urban setting when I bought the book, but it happened to be in a town that allowed chickens. I learned more from this book than I did from the poultry department and agricultural extension unit at the local university. It was my handbook through problems and gave me my successes. Highly recommended for the casual and new small farmer. Highly recommended just for the stories.
women with grit........1998-04-26
If you have ever considered homesteading as a woman alone or with another woman this book is a must. I read it when it first came out in the 70's and was homesteading myself. It helped in more ways than I can count for me as a new "back to the lander". If you're into the new movement back to the land, you must buy this book.

Book Description
A practical approach to wetland restoration
Can wetland restoration be successful? Tracing over two decades of progress in wetland restoration, the authors of this book come back with an affirmative, resounding "Yes." They draw on lessons learned in four long-term restoration projects from Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, and California to clearly demonstrate how to achieve success in diverse regions and reverse wetland losses of the last two centuries. This pragmatic, goal-oriented approach avoids the polarization that typically characterizes the subject, while offering a wealth of useful technical information. Key public policy issues surrounding wetland restoration today as well as future directions are also thoroughly examined.
A timely, indispensable resource for engineers, scientists, and professionals involved in wetland restoration and floodplain and wetland management,
A Case for Wetland Restoration:
- llustrates the importance of wetlands and wetland restoration
- Debunks the notion that wetlands can't be successfully restored
- Describes the shift in federal public policy from the destruction to the restoration of wetlands
- Explains how Section 404 of the Clean Water Act has worked in the interest of the environment
- Analyzes landmark projects with sufficient history to yield reliable lessons

Description:
This paper describes seven case studies in which ecotechnological approaches are being used to reduce the discharge of nitrogen to the environment in three local government jurisdictions in the moist subtropical zone of eastern Australia. Both technical performance and factors relating to acceptance of the technologies are examined. Three of the technologies have survived early setbacks to achieve increasing acceptance. Composting toilets and reed beds (sub-surface flow wetlands) have achieved takeoff in the on-site wastewater context in the Lismore City Council area where the level of adoption (based on 2004-2005 figures) for both technologies was approximately 30% of newly approved systems. In both cases, the level of adoption has been favoured by local scientific studies which have confirmed claims regarding technical performance and by regulations which encourage the reduction of nitrogen discharge to the environment. Free water surface (FWS) wetlands are installed as polishing devices at three of the 10 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Lismore and the adjoining Byron and Richmond River Shires. Early problems arising from inexperience at design, construction and management of these wetlands have been overcome as local familiarity has increased. This confidence has been a factor in the decision to support a major upgrade to the West Byron constructed wetland system and to install a further three wetlands locally. A further two technologies each have one full-scale system in operation. A 24ha multipurpose wetland regeneration project for effluent polishing and transpiration, acid sulfate soil management, wetland regeneration, and carbon sequestration, recently installed at the end of the West Byron STP treatment train, is reducing total nitrogen concentrations from approximately 4-1mg/L. A landfill leachate treatment system incorporating pond, macrophyte zones, horizontal flow gravel filter and single pass sand filter is reducing NH"4-N and TKN concentrations by 95% and 84%, respectively. The final two technologies described are associated with the reuse and/or treatment of municipal wastewaters. The annual crops hemp and kenaf have both exhibited high N uptake rates in irrigated crop trials. However, their short growing season has resulted in rejection as production crops at one STP in the Byron Shire. The recent realization that the perennial pasture grass Setaria sphacelata can perform the role of wetland macrophyte has given rise to the concept of the ''wet-and-dry-land'' cell. Still at the pilot stage, this ecotechnology may have application in areas with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Description:
A method was developed to utilize an airborne laser swath mapping-produced digital elevation model to evaluate and compare several restoration alternatives for the 660ha Levy Prairie in north-central Florida. Detailed water budget analysis and a histogram of the elevation data points coupled with a level-pool assumption over the prairie basin allowed for determination of the hydroperiod on an areal basis. This analysis method facilitated comparison of restoration alternatives in terms of the restoration project objective to create permanently inundated conditions at water depths 0.15-0.61m (for waterfowl) over greater than 50% of the prairie area within the first 5 years after construction. Construction costs were estimated and compared for each of the alternatives that attained the restoration objective, with the least cost project identified as the recommended alternative.

Book Description
Quantitative methods and mathematical modelling are of critical importance to fishery science and management but, until now, there has been no book that offers the sharp focus, methodological detail, and practical examples needed by non-specialist fishery scientists and managers, and ecologists. Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries fills that void. To date, methodology books in fisheries science have been limited to cookbook approach to problems; simple compilations; or expositions in which either too much theory or insufficient methodological detail is given. The text is organized into three sections: an introduction to modelling in fisheries and ecology, a straight methodology section covering a range of methods, and a section focusing on specific fields in fisheries science. This book is timely as it addresses a topic of recent debate in fisheries and ecology, describing and comparing the uses of Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian quantitative methods. Designed as stand-alone units, each chapter provides examples from both classic and recent literature and comes with dedicated Excel spreadsheets that permit you to delve into every detail of the analysis. All of these spreadsheets serve as active examples, which can easily be modified and customized and can be used as templates for analyzing your own data. The spreadsheets permit you to learn at your own speed and cover the simplest linear regression to the more complex non-linear modelling using maximum likelihood. Data analysis and modelling are best learned by doing and not just by reading. This book illustrates, step by step, the analyses it covers. More detailed in terms of introductory quantitative methods and modelling as applied to fisheries than any other book available, Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries gives you the advantage by supplying the full details of the analysis so that understanding the material is a matter of following the book.
Customer Reviews:
A primer for all of us.......2003-12-29
In my opinion, Malcolm Haddon has managed a "tour de force" with this book. He not only covered most of the modern methods of quantitative analysis and modelling in fisheries science but he did so in a clear and relatively simple language. His book is approachable to all biologists with a basic understanding of mathematics and statistics. Yet, he managed to cover both the theoretical underpinnings of the methods and the practical aspects of their use (options, pitfalls ... etc.). In addition, the book gives MS Excel examples of the methods which should allow those of us who are not programmers to fully appreciate the methods by using them interactively. The Excel spreadsheets are also available for download on two web sites.

Interpersonal Relations in Nursing
ASIN: 0826138829 |
Customer Reviews:
Read this book.......2007-02-26
To understand Peplau's theory of interpersonal relationships, I decided to read this book. Since Peplau was a detail person and kept all kinds of records, this book is filled with fascinating stories of her life.Through her stories pictures emerge of who Peplau was, the state of nursing in the first half of the century and the importance of her theory for nursing. One of her goals was to change nursing from a job to a profession. Early on, there was no set curriculum for nursing. The stories you will read will change you and make you enthusiastic about the nursing profession. I believe this book will inspire nurses and anyone will find it a fascinating life story.
