Book Description

This book was written to bring together a summary of the current knowledge on merit pay and to further advance understanding of this type of incentive pay plan. When the writing of the first edition was begun in 1989, there were no books devoted exclusively to the subject of merit pay. Thus, this book was written to fill a void in the compensation literature. Since then, surveys have shown that merit pay remains a frequently used method of incentive compensation, and research into the merit pay process continues to grow. However, other forms of incentive pay, such as gainsharing, continue to receive the most attention, as evidenced by the number of books and articles on this topic in the popular press. In response to the frequent use of merit pay in organizations and the growing body of research, a book-length treatment of merit pay was needed. What we hope to do with this second edition, beyond updating, is to link merit pay with the many changes going on in total compensation or "reward management" (R. Heneman, 2001a, 2002). We also will argue that, even among all the challenges and changes that organizations currently face, there is still "merit" in appropriately conceived and implemented merit pay plans (Bates, 2003c).

The approach of this book started out on the right track,by focusing on the parts of soil that can be observed after mixing it with water. But a major drawback of this title is that by oversimplifying, it perpetuates the misconception that plants eat soil, e.g. "Humus is rich with food that plants need to grow..."p.13 "As plants grow they use up the food in humus. Decomposers put more food back into the humus." p.15 "When plants use up the food in topsoil..."p.19 The inserted fun facts are distracting and/or of questionable worth. e.g."Fun fact: Dirt is so interesting that soil scientists study it everyday." I would recommend Dirt by Steve Tomecek in place of this title. It has similar content that connects to kid's experiences with soil and has a more accurate approach to the soil/plant connection. Raymond Bial's A Handful of Dirt is another good title on soil.

Great book!.......2004-07-25

My kids and niece love this book and I love the hands-on approach it uses. The book begins with a quick experiment that helps the kids visualize what the book will be talking about. It helps kids understand why dirt is so important and explains how bugs and worms help too. The illustrations are wonderful and that is what usually engages children from the get-go. The book would be great for classroom use as well and a good introduction to table of contents, glossary, and index.

The Gamma-Ray Astrophysics 2001 Symposium offered the opportunity for participants to discuss important results from the nine years of operations of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), which ceased operations on June 4, 2000. The Gamma Ray Sky with COMPTON GRO and SIGMA covers the new results of the COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) satellite, which covers six decades of energy from 15 keV to 30 GeV, the French gamma ray telescope SIGMA, the first imaging experiment on a satellite to observe gamma rays from 35 keV to 1.3 MeV, and of ground-based telescopes in the TeV range. SIGMA and the suite of four instruments aboard the COMPTON GRO are first described by the members of the COMPTON GRO Team and the SIGMA science team. Most of the rest of the book is then devoted to the astronomical implications of these observations. The topics covered are: galactic and extragalactic gamma ray sources; galactic and extragalactic gamma ray backgrounds; the galactic centre; gamma ray spectrometry; and gamma ray bursts. An original book in which both experimentalists and theoreticians -- both astrophysicists and particle physicists -- review the achievements, problems and prospects in the gamma ray field, from 15 keV to 1 TeV. Also suitable for young scientists working on related topics.

This book is devoted to the explanation of freeway traffic congestion, a fact of life for many car drivers. Results of empirical observations of freeway congestion, which exhibit diverse complex spatiotemporal patterns including moving traffic jams, are analyzed. Empirical features of these reproducible freeway traffic patterns only recently sufficiently well understood are reviewed. In the first part, three-phase traffic theory can be found, which is the basis for a physical theory of traffic phenomena and its applications in engineering. The Sino-American Friendship As Tradition and Challenge: Dr. Ailie Gale In China 1908-1950 by Dr. M. Cristina Zaccarini (History Professor, Adelphi University) focuses on the writings of Dr. Ailie Gale, an American female missionary and hospital administrator, and her erudite, up-close comparison and contrast between nations from the perspective of one who has lived in both worlds. Her beliefs in duty and service to God, spiritual equality between genders, and the efforts of her medical service are all brought to vivid life on the page, as are her forceful opposition to a patriarchal hierarchy and the subordination of women that she saw all too heavily inlaid within the traditional Chinese cultures around her.
