Mastering Quicken 99 shows you how to use the latest version of the most popular personal-finance program on the market. It's a sort of super-manual that thoroughly explains how to use every single feature of Quicken 99.

Like the program itself, this book focuses on "registers" for checking accounts, consumer loans, assets, and credit cards. Nelson explains how to set up and maintain these accounts, and then shows how to convert their contents to tax-form entries at the end of the year.

If you want to learn how to store options transactions--something Quicken can do if you follow a special procedure--Mastering Quicken 99 can't tell you what you need to know. However, there's a solid amount of information in these pages about using Quicken to track business finances, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll (but most people who need to track business finances do so with a different program).

Coverage of securities transactions is good, but somewhat narrowly focused. If you want to know how to record stock, bond, and mutual fund transactions, this book has the information you need. It also explains obscure transactions--like capital-gains distributions from mutual funds--in some detail. --David Wall

Book Description

Delivering 250 more pages than any other Quicken book, here is the most comprehensive book that goes way beyond the basic coverage. What will you learn in those extra 250 pages? Learn to track investments, use Quicken in a small business, do online banking, connect to the Internet with Quicken, and take advantage of Quicken Financial Network (one of the top 50 websites!). Plus you will get expert financial tips and a glossary of financial terms. This book is the complete guide to getting the most out of Quicken.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the basics........1998-12-24

I recently purchase Mastering Quicken 99 expecting to find some of the complicated techniques of debiting and crediting multiple accounts in one transaction. For the price, I didn't get what I needed. The book does go into good detail to explain the basics of using Quicken. I have been using Quicken since the beginning and really like the product; however, I need examples and explainations relative to long term loans made to other people. The book doesn't include information on using the new Invoice feature and Mr. Nelson advises that they were working with a bata version of Quicken 99. It's a shame, I'd like to receipt an invoice that will credit a loan account using a split transaction to account for P&I. Maybe next time I go to the book store, I'll have more time to read for the detail I need. I would enjoy sharing my circumstances with Stephen Nelson or Cathy Kenney.

From the supplier: Beans are fast becoming popular among consumers of processed food products. Health-conscious consumers who may be vegetarians or are cutting down red meat consumption know that beans are the best source for protein. The growing popularity of Mexican food and Mexican cuisine is another factor for the processed beans market growth. Another factor that enhanced the market is the technological development in processing beans. Innovations in dehydration techniques make cooking beans easier and faster.

                        Book Description

Finite element modeling has developed into one of the most important tools at an engineer's disposal, especially in applications involving nonlinearity. While engineers coping with such applications may have access to powerful computers and finite element codes, too often they lack the strong foundation in finite element analysis (FEA) that nonlinear problems require. Finite Element Analysis: Thermomechanics of Solids builds that foundation. It offers a comprehensive, unified presentation of FEA applied to coupled mechanical and thermal, static and dynamic, and linear and nonlinear responses of solids and structures. The treatment first establishes the mathematical background, then moves from the basics of continuum thermomechanics through the finite element method for linear media to nonlinear problems based on a unified set of incremental variational principles. As the use of FEA in advanced materials and applications continues to grow and with the integration of FEA with CAD, rapid prototyping, and visualization technology, it becomes increasingly important that engineers fully understand the principles and techniques of FEA. This book offers the opportunity to gain that understanding through a treatment that is concise yet comprehensive, detailed, and practical.

It has been several years since I read Soul of the Lion. However, although the Civil War years of Chamberlain are quite interesting and alive, the rest of the book is quite dull. Chamberlain's remaining days in Maine and Florida are just not very interesting reading. I attribute most of this to Wallace's weakness as a writer.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute to an outstanding General and Soldier........2000-08-15

This is an excellent book by Willard M. Wallace that was first written in 1960. It begins with the family background of the Chamberlain family and its historical roots back in Europe and then goes to the birth of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and details his life story, in which many triumphs and tragedies happened. While this book was written in a "romantic glossy tone", it is an excellent resouce for material about this gallant soldier and his contribution to save the Union at Gettysburg and Petersburg

A man of immense intellect Chamberlain spoke many languages and was a gifted writer and poet. His natural leadership abilities was an inspiration not only to the students at Bowdoin College in Maine, but also to the 20th Maine on the hard fought day of July 2, 1863. This man quite possibly saved the Battle and thus the Union with his suprising and daring charge down Little Round Top thus suprising the men of the 15th Alabama and the rest of Confederate General Evander Law's Brigade.

A true leader, as the book points out, Chamberlain was elected Governor of Maine and in later life was a great speaker at many GAR Reunions.

This is an excellent book and highly recommended to anyone who wants to know more about the brave and amazing Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

4 out of 5 stars Very good biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.......2000-06-19

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is one of the greatest American military heroes of all time. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous leadership of the 20th Maine Volunteer Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, thereby ensuring his place in history. "Soul of the Lion," by Willard M. Wallace, is a well written biography of Chamberlain. With clear and lively prose, Wallace chronicles Chamberlain's early life and career as a professor at Bowdoin College; his rise from command of the 20th Maine to general officer rank in the Union army; and his unfailingly heroic performance in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, including Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Five Forks.

Wallace also details Chamberlain's post-Civil War career as Governor of Maine (1867-1871); President of Bowdoin College (1871-1883); and unsuccessful businessman. Especially interesting was how Chamberlain, as commander of Maine's militia, saved the state from violent anarchy during the 1880 gubernatorial election.

Despite being well written, "Soul of the Lion" doesn't quite approach the depth found in the best biographies of military leaders. I would have especially appreciated more detailed information concerning Chamberlain's relationships with his family members. This is only a minor reservation, however; "Soul of the Lion" is a good basic survey of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's life, and a highly recommendable book about one of the great Americans of the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Biography that Stands the Test of Time.......1999-12-11

Although John Pullen recently wrote a biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Willard Wallace's 1960 classic remains a highly readible and informative gem. This was an era of great writing about the Civil war, including Bruce Catton's Centenial trilogy and the first two volume's of Shelby Foote's masterpiece. Wallace's writing is equally lucid and his coverage is vast in scope. He devotes nealy as many pages to Chmaberlain's post war career as he does to his heroic years as the Colonel of the 20th Maine and later General. We all know of the heroics of Bowdoin professor (turned military leader) Chamberlain on Little Round Top but he also was instrumental in the final battles near Petersburg at Five Forks and Quaker Road. Despite being wounded (for what seems to be the umpteenth time) he went on to rally his troops. After the war he went on to serve a governor of Maine and President of Bowdoin College. His Presidency of Bowdoin was progressive but troubled. Quite simply, his innovations were ahead of their time thus opposed by many in the Bowdoin community. In politics, he was independent, answering to no bosses and as head of the Maine militia, he put down a near inserection, after a disputed election, without calling out his troops. This is a great book about a great American. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Common man with an extraordinary life as soldier & statesman.......1999-01-10

The biography of Joshua Chamberlin is about a common man who had an extraordinary life as a result of a seminal event at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was a professor in Maine who decided it was his duty to serve his country. He had no military training, but became one of General Grant's most trusted generals. He fought in some of the most terrible battles in the war. For his courage at Gettysburg by turning the Confederates flank on the Little Roundtop with a bayonet charge, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. After the war, he was Maine's governor and statesman until his death. A truly inspiring life story.

                              Book Description

"Lord, have mercy." This was Alliette's simple but profound plea as she drove herself to the hospital. She had been standing in her kitchen doing dishes. . . . Her husband and older daughters were not at home. Suddenly she felt something like water running down her leg.

Alliette knew what it meant, but she couldn't believe it. She was only twenty-two weeks along. . . . She decided to drive herself to the hospital. She soon regretted it.

In these pages you will find five stories of babies born before their time, fifteen to eighteen weeks short of the nine months allotted to form a child. Written by Daniel Taylor from extensive interviews, each story arises out of the practice of Dr. Ronald Hoekstra at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

You will enter the neonatal intensive care unit, a quietly crowded place of babies, doctors, nurses, parents and machines. A place of drama, heartache, waiting and joy. And a place where God is found.

The questions raised by the stories of these smallest of infants are as large as life itself. What makes life worth living? What is the balance of medicine and faith?

This book is not a collection of case studies but the stories of women, men and tiny children with whom we explore the meaning of life, death and faith. Here is a book to encourage and inspire, a book about both the struggle and joy of life.

"In the high-tech intensive care nursery of a major American hospital, we meet six premature babies, their devoted parents and a praying doctor. Their miraculous stories told in Before Their Time remind us that the most important formula we can feed our children is faith." Diane M. Komp, M.D., author of Images of Grace: A Pediatrician's Trilogy of Faith, Hope & Love

"Daniel Taylor is one of the finest writers of our age. . . . The stories read like mysteries of grace which rivet us to the seasons of our own lives that feel premature and incomplete. What I learned not only brought me to tears of joy but to a deeper passion for the glorious timing of God's plan in my life." Dan B. Allender, coauthor of The Cry of the Soul

5 out of 5 stars Treasured and Loved.......2005-11-03

What a delight to share in the love and the pain as the families of these preemie-babies struggle with the issues of our time. What a wonder to have a peek, not inside the womb, but outside, as these babies continue development that is normally hidden from the world.

There is nothing weak in the love of parents who spend weeks at their baby's bedside, reaching through tubes and machines to assure a little one he/she is loved. There is nothing callous in a doctor spelling out the almost insurmountable obstacles a baby must overcome in order to survive.

Intensive care neonatal units are places few of us will ever see. Healthy children are a blessing most of us take for granted. Yet this book takes us into the lives of several families, with all the drama of repeated life-and-death crisis. This book lets us feel the pain, and the joy; the frustration and the wonder. It confronts us with the questions. It does not preach, yet dependency on God breathes from its pages. These infants, so astonishingly small, are precious and wonderfully made.

This is a book you'll want on your shelf. You'll find your eyes overflowing at times. You'll find yourself sharing pain too deep for words. You'll also find yourselves lifted with a sense of wonder at the Majesty of God's handiwork.

5 out of 5 stars A well written and affirming book........2003-10-29

My daughter spent 90 days in the NICU unit at our local children's hospital. It was the most difficult and most joyous time of our lives. Fortunately, our story had a happy ending and she came home without needing medication or reliance on medical equipment to eat or breathe.
I came across this book about two weeks into our NICU stay. It gave me hope in that it expressed many of the thoughts and feelings that our family was going through, and describing the unique intersection of parents, neonatologists and premature or critically ill newborns that make up the NICU. (It was also difficult to read with my child being hospitalized at the same time)
I really enjoyed a brief essay in the last chapter of the book about perseverence. Every parent of a child in NICU should read that last chapter. It was very affirming to me in light of how tiring (and rewarding)the experience of being present each day with your child in the hospital can become. The experience is emotionally draining, and a parent will experience hope and fear and discouragement, and many times will wonder where they will get the energy to interact with the medical staff, learn the medical terminology and interact with the different personalities of the nursing team, and be able to deal with the incredible emotions that are generated when they receive medical updates on their baby. Parents need a lot of affirmation.
I also recommend this book because the stories of the newborns are well written. You will laugh and cry and become attached to all the babies and their families. I bought a copy for the library at the childrens hospital where our daughter was treated. This book would be appropriate for parents of critically ill newborns or for those who love a good story. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

There need to be more books like this one. An important topic like prematurity needs more attention.

Dail R. Cantrell was recently nominated for a Book of the Year award for Equal to the Task, one of the best books on the subject ever written. This book is a good companion.

5 out of 5 stars Before Their Time is very true to life........2001-11-08

I thought this book was wonderful. It helps people who have never experienced life in the NICU get a glimpse of it. I have quadruplets and all 4 of my babies went through the NICU at Chidren's Hospital in Minneapolis. Dr. Ronald Hoekstra took care of my babies and he is as wonderful as the stories in this book make him sound. It is very difficult and hard to explain what life is like in the NICU and this book does a marlvous job of conveying that. I have given this book to many friends and family members to help them understand what I went through.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great storytelling.......2001-02-14

I loved this book. I often read and the gym on the exercise bike and my mind will wander. Not with this book! I was engrossed with the stories and tears came to my eyes often as these people of faith go through very challenging times. Although written to partially explain how the Christian faith of these parents and some of the staff helped them through their individual ordeals, it was not offensive. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the wonder of new life.

But I too, like another reviewer, made the mistake of reading it as I am going through birthing a 27 weeker preemie and a long stay in the NICU. It does not have a happy ending, and I intend to. This book was in the "parent library" of the NICU, and I am telling all the mothers that I see on a regular basis in the unit to steer clear of this book. I was a mess for a couple of days after reading it. I just wish I had waited until my baby was older and out of danger before I read it. I do think it would be helpful for parents who lost their preemie.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-06-11

This book is both true to life and intriguing. Emily and her mother's experience in the NICU was scary but also prepares a mom-to-be with the reality that your baby might have to face this situation. All around a great book.

5 out of 5 stars One excellent book.......2002-10-19

I am not very big on reading- in fact, this is one of the first books i have read in a LONG time for fun. I am still quite young, so i really dont know what it is like to have a baby. Elizabeth Mehren is by far the best author i have EVER read, and the book was fabulous- i couldnt put it down. It teaches you what she had to go through with her premature child, the struggles she had, and how her life changed. Her child went through many ups and downs, and she was there to experience it all. The ending was quite sad, and i cried for a while after it, but i would definitely reccomend reading this book to anyone- especially someone experiencing having a child in the NICU.

4 out of 5 stars A journalist account of the life of a preemie.......2001-06-02

I am amazed at accurately it captures the thoughts and experiences of a generation of NICU parents. While the ending is sad, the reader is left with the feeling that little Emily's life was truly valued by those who knew her and by everyone touched by this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very True to Life.......2000-05-20

I thought this book was very well written and very descriptive. I reviewed this story after my own experience with my slightly premature baby. Lucky for us, his NICU stay was only for one day, and for us, we had a happy outcome. When Elizabeth conveyed her thoughts and feelings on leaving her baby in NICU and not being able to hold her, I could very much relate to her feelings. I remember well how I cried when I had to leave my own baby. Elizabeth, if you read this, I applause you for getting your story out there, to share with others. It really gives other people a perspective on having a baby that was "born too soon". Of note, I am a HELLP syndrome survivor and wish I could have done like Elizabeth and used the type of media she did.

                                        Book Description

Doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists and others whose work is concerned with assessing the performance of children known or suspected to be suffering from a variety of handicaps are becoming increasingly interested in the possible antecedent factors. Among the perinatal factors which are considered to be possibly relevant, low birthweight is prominent: but it is important to know whether the effects of being born too soon carry the same implications as those being born too small, and what may be the effect of associated biological and social factors. This knowledge is important not only as a contribution to the diagnosis, but also as a help in deciding about prognosis and the likelihood of response to a particular form of treatment.

A premature baby weighing less than 2 pounds at birth defies the medical odds stacked against her. The following excerpts are taken from the book about her premature birth, "Born Too Soon... But Not For A Miracle!" During the early morning hours of Monday, May 25th, while sleeping soundly in my own bed in our new home, I was abruptly awakened around 1:00 AM, as though someone had called my name or shaken me. After listening for a moment to determine the cause of my awakening, and finding none, I decided to make one of my frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom, which was located just a few steps from the bed. As soon as I was seated in the bathroom, my whole world spun out of control! At that moment a huge clot left my body, and a faucet of blood began to flow. When that happened, I thought I had just given birth in my bathroom and was now bleeding to death! "HELP!... SOMEONE HELP!" the delivery room nurse frantically yelled as she leaned towards the open door. Although this professionally skilled woman had assisted with countless deliveries over the years, this particular birth was causing her tremendous anxiety, because it was not a delivery that could be managed single-handedly. My baby was making its grand entrance three months too soon, and the nurse knew it was a life-or-death situation.
