A well written book that falls far short of explaining in depth any complicated task. This book is for the novice user who is to lazy to use the built in help screens. Sorry I bought it.

I found this book to be very good. I wasn't using my copy of Quicken (it came free on my cmputer) because learning it seemed like such a chore. But this book showed me the ropes and got me going. Now I use Quicken with ease.

This book, as well as all books by this author, are excellent. They are obviously an good resource for its intended audience of coaches, but it is also useful for any leader. I consider, and recommend this book to others, as my bible for leadership. It is easy to read and understand. The concepts build logically and interact well with each other.

This is very good. Well written, easy to follow, and very practical applications for yourself and your team. Most of this stuff I am going to implement or had already implemented.

For any beginning coach, or coach that is struggling with reaching your players, you must have this book. If your team is underachieving, this book will help. The references to successful coaches and their experiences is really a positive.

The one funny about this book, is how much it refers to Gary Barnett in a positive light. This is kind of ironic based on what is happening to him right now...

Winning is not the only thing.......2002-01-03

An excellent resource not only for coaches and those involved in sport activities but also for parents and educators. Janssen and Dale talk about the importance of team building and the real reasons most kids get involved in sports: to have fun and to have social opportunities, among many others. That is not to say that winning is unimportant but rather that it is only one aspect of involvement with sports. A must read for parents and educators who believe winning is the ONLY thing.

Excellent Motivational Primer for the Small Business.......2005-12-24

think this is a book for two reasons. Many motivational or business books are about a guy that either started a big company because of a great product and statistically that is just a small number of business people (like a Bill Gates) or they are an executive that was a success in a larger organization (like Jack Welch) or they got a head start with a family business (like Sumner Redstone or Ted Turner). But here is a book about a small business operator. He is much closer to the average guy. He was running in fact a small business both inside and outside of competitive yachting.

Secondly he covers all the basic fundamentals in motivation and planning. I will not review them again here - you can look at the index - but it is simply a great summary of things to do and attitudes that must be developed.

This is a short but powerful book just 200 pages long and costing now only $5.00.

Better than it seems.......2003-03-14

This is a formulaic book with a great message. The writing style may drive you nuts, but the message about the commitment to performance is there. My favorite people are those who truly love something, especially something with measured performance, and Dennis Conner clearly loves winning yacht races. This book isn't about yacht races (there are other Dennis Conner books about that), it's about winning at whatever you do. I return often to this book for motivation and ideas on how to improve.

I've been using this book for several years now. And each year I buy copies for our farm interns and staff. I think the book does a great job of showing various pieces of equipment with the how and why it works. The vignettes of farmers who use those tools is very helpful in offering a three dimensional real life picture of how the tool may or may not work on our farm. Great book, one we refer to often for ideas and to make sure we all have the same "picture" in our heads of what a tool can and might do.

This book examines a nonlinear system of parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) arising in mathematical biology and statistical mechanics. In the context of biology, the system typically describes the chemotactic feature of cellular slime molds. One way of deriving these equations is via the random motion of a particle in a cellular automaton. In statistical mechanics, on the other hand, the system is associated with the motion of the mean field of self-interacting particles under gravitational force.

Mathematically, the mechanism can be referred to as a quantized blowup. A fascinating portrait of an American hero........1999-01-16

This book is nothing short of captivating. The author provides brief explanatory narratives to connect entries from Edwards' diaries, beginning with flight training, then combat in North Africa, and the early post-war years in America.

Just ferrying his airplane from the States to North Africa was a big adventure, considering the rather primitive nature of navigation aids and weather forecasts in that era.

Combat in Africa and Italy is described in detail, some of it surprising. For example, a military advance had a down side. Moving forward to a newly captured air field meant that the American aviators were subjected to more ground attacks by German aircraft.

The second half of the book covers the early post-war years, when American factories were building new airplanes almost faster than the Air Force could flight test them. Many exotic, one-of-a-kind vehicles are described here.

To some extent, the reader has a sense of foreboding at this point, knowing that this story is destined to end as unhappily as the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Yet this knowledge serves to accentuate the daily events described here.

There are many memorable tidbits in this book, such as tales of a man who actually intimidated Chuck Yeager!

Glen Edwards is portrayed in these pages as so heroic, embodying so many virtues, yet so modest and unassuming. This is someone you would want to know and to spend time with. Through this book, you can.

A superb book about Glen Edwards. I thoroughly enjoyed and empathized with his career. The pace was like reading a literary version of Ravel's "Bolero" with the crescendo building to the final flight. The description of the crash was wrenching, superb.

As a surgeon who enjoys the writings of other physicians, I was disappointed with Judith's Pavilion. His metaphors and analogies are frequently a bit far fetched. The writing lacks coherence while his stream of consciousness makes the prose difficult to read. The author rarely points to anything profound or intriguing, though he does write with conviction. There are plenty of other reflective books about medicine that would be better to sample than Judith's Pavilion. If this genre interests you, try something by one of these physicians: Paul Brand (The Gift of Pain, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made), Oliver Sacks (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Awakenings), Lewis Thomas (The Lives of a Cell, The Youngest Science), Richard Selzer (Mortal Lessons, Letters to a Young Doctor), David Graham (Thoughts Along the Way), Harold Klawans (Toscanini's Fumble, Newton's Madness), or Sherwin Nuland (The Wisdom of the Body).

I tried not to let my disappointment in the book's contents be reflected in my rating of it.

This book is about life and death, mistakes, regrets, transience, and a milieu of philosophical issues. The fact that the author is a specialist in neurosurgery has little to do with the book itself, except perhaps as evidence that scientists can be poetic writers as well. Admittedly I was hoping more for a book dealing with the issues and details of neurosurgical patients and their outcomes.

The prose was lovely and poetic, though fraught with metaphors. It was hard to follow at times, seeming more like a recording of a stream of consciousness. The book was not particularly mesmerizing reading, but it did hold my interest at a moderate pace.

The practice of medicine holds special fascination for me, a longtime practitioner myself. This work reveals a depth of feeling and a revelation of the human soul that is often overlooked in such an important profession as neurosurgery; still, Dr. Flitter's writing at times is difficult to stay with, and he sometimes wanders unneccessarily. However, writing from the heart as he does is honest and difficult, and for that I applaud his work. I would recommend his book to others in the healthcare field.

I love to read books on medicine/surgery, etc. But I don't think that I have ever read a book that, after finishing a chapter (or even a particular sentence), has made me put the book in my lap and sit back and marvel at the author's use of language. Many times, since I was reading it at work on break, I had to fight to hold back tears. Some of the stories are so heart-breaking. One that I will always remember told of a young boy that had to undergo 2 brain surgeries and a tough fight with life-threatening infection. But he made it through ! He would live a normal life afterall ! But a short while later when playing with his siblings, a balloon he was blowing up popped and the boy fell to the ground unable to breathe. An autopsy revealed that a small piece of balloon had become stuck in the windpipe. He had survived 2 very dangerous operations only to fall victim to a balloon !! I highly recommend this beautifully written memoir for all readers that enjoy being entranced by the skillful and astounding use of words.
