It was poor policymaking by corporate heads that brought Lockheed and Chrysler to the brink of bankruptcy; it was the failure of top managers to respond to new market conditions in the early 1980s that led to the demise of hundreds of corporations, both large and small; and it was "quick-and-easy" decisions by Presidents Kennedy and Reagan that resulted in serious mistakes in foreign policy. Now, Irving Janis, one of the world's leading authorities on decisionmaking, presents a comprehensive analysis that shows corporate executives, government and organizational policymakers, and general managers how to avoid making critical errors and ensure quality in making vital decisions.

Using cogent evidence and illustrations from studies of top-level policymakers in government, business, and public welfare organizations, Janis shows how the likelihood of failure is substantially reduced if sound procedures of information search, appraisal, and planning are used. Consequently, the risk of failure, especially in critical situations, is substantially lowered.

Janis also details how executives can deal with challenging threats and opportunities and reveals what specific leadership practices are likely to improve crisis management. A profile of twenty leadership practices will help managers function as effective executives who practice and promote high-quality decisionmaking on issues that affect the vital interests of the organization. A set of seventeen characteristics for selecting the best personnel for policymaking positions is also provided to aid managers in reducing their sources of error. Missed the Point.......2007-09-28

I don't think that LeGault even read Blink. More likely, he looked at the cover, scanned a few pages, and decided to write a cultural book as a "counterarguement" to a much better book that was really about human and organizational psychology (and in the process score a few extra book sales by piggy-backing on a much better and more popular book). Save your money. If you really want to read about decision making, I recommend Sources of Power by Gary Klein, and for business people, Certain to Win by Chet Richards.

Could use a bit more thinking...........2007-09-26

One would expect a book call "Think" to exhibit more thought. I expected to see examples of carefully thought out analyses, but found none, really. There are knee-jerk rants, unsupported opinions, and really nothing that challenges anyone to change the way that they think.

The first chapter hints that we are about to discover a better way to think--but mostly we discover is that the world is not reaching the conclusions that LeGault thinks that it should, and we are not presented with any evidence why the world is wrong. The world may very well be wrong, but in most cases LeGault attacks the same old straw men, presenting only a parody of the ideas he opposes. He presents no data to back the ideas that he supports. He intends to champion objectivity, but does not exhibit it himself. He particulary misrepresents the book "Blink," which is more about how to avoid the pitfalls of unconcious bias than how to avoid thinking.

There are many examples of great thinkers presented, but in a rather shallow way. LeGault does not really pinpoint what it is that separates great thought from mediocre; we gain no insight into the thought process of his exemplars. This is not the book to read if you want to find out how the great thinkers do it.

Critical Thinking Not Found In This Book.......2007-08-16

What irony that a book about critical thinking was written without the use of any critical thinking by the author. In contrast, I see a lot more critical thinking in the reviews written by the irate readers of this book than from the author, editor, and publisher combined.

The premise of this book is worthwhile, but it needed a real critical thinker and writer to execute.

dichotomy in cardboard.......2007-08-15

i looked forward to this book, but someone else should have written it. the author, the longer the book is read, disproves his own theory. he begins to write emotionally, taking potshots at everything from michael moore to global warming theories to the use of ritalin to psychologists in california, without the slightest evidence of critcal thinking. he states the obvious, and groups an entire people, such as the greeks, romans, americans, etc. as critical thinkers or not. actually the book, to me at least, would discourage logic. if this guy is what critical thinking produces, you can have it. it is a jumbled mess. a smart guy with a thesaurus, does not produce clear thinking. trying to separate logic from emotion is a fool's errand. it ignores humanity, which is what really separates us from the beasts. i guess i am trying to say is that this book, contains little logic. in fact, the whole premise is illogical.

Not the book it claims to be.......2007-07-16

Marketed as a rationalists response to Gladwell's "Blink", LeGault spends precious little time explaining the books thesis and inordinate time presenting his personal political viewpoints. For example, the author claims that the vast majority of scientists disagree with the threat of global warming, and he accuses those that believe in the problem of falling prey to poor thinking again, and again, and again. The author also feels that radical feminism is a serious threat to American culture (I still haven't met one of these mysterious radical feminists). In general, the author seems to think that simply being a contrarian makes one rational. If you think like he does, then you are being logical. LeGault's real thesis appears to be an attempt to conflate rationalism with conservativism. Still, if you can wade through the author's obvious biases, there are a few thoughtful passages that offer a valuable counter-point to "Blink".

My husband & I recently got a kitten & trying to read up as much as we can on his care.. This book takes you through step by step in choosing & caring for a kitten. I found the book very informative but I also found it contradicted some things that other cat care books mention.. Also the book doesn't really give you any information about spaying/neutering but advises you to seek out your vet.

My husband thought the book useful for the most part, but in some ways strict.. Seeming to advise against some things that other cat care authors give allowance for.. such as what type of food the kitten and/or cat should eat.

I would definitly reccomend this book with the advice to let it AND other books be your guide....

Mr. Swanson has written a bok that not only ENJOYABLE to read, but FULL of information for 1st time cat owners, "thinking of being" cat owners or even long time cat owners. Great illustrations also. Thank you, Mr. Swanson (and Mr. Dombrowski)

brief, but comprehensive coverage.......2005-08-23

This book is directed at the home gardener or orchardist who is interested in learning about managing native bees on a larger scale, and covers pretty much all the aspects of their cultivation, from tube selection to predators. In between it covers multiple other issues, such as how temperature will affect the maturation predictably, and could be used quite effectively as a "how-to" book for an orchard manager. Although brief and a fairly quick read, it is surprisingly comprehensive, with information into web resources as well.

If you're not sure you even want to start rearing native bees, I'd suggest reading Brian Griffin's book on The Orchard Mason Bee (if you can find a copy), which I think is a much better introduction to the topic. But if you've been "bitten by the bug" already, this book is an excellent manual on the management of a small population of bees into a sustainable larger population for the purposes of pollination on a widely local scale.

Wave propagation in poroelastic and viscoelastic solids treated by the Boundary Element method in time domain is the topic of this research book. A novel boundary element formulation has been presented based on the Convolution Quadrature Method. Because in this time-stepping formulation only Laplace domain fundamental solutions are needed this method can be effectively applied to a plenty of problems, e.g., anisotropic or transversely isotropic continua. So, this method combines the advantage of the Laplace domain with the advantage of a time domain calculation. Here, wave propagation phenomenon in viscoelastic as well as poroelastic half spaces are considered. The Rayleigh wave as well as the slow compressional wave in the poroelastic solid is discussed.

Reflecting Rebel Soldier.......2002-08-18

If you want to learn about history it is best to read the reflections, diaries and memoirs of those who lived it. Samuel H. Sprott, 40th Alabama Infantry, Army of Tennessee, wrote his memoir 34 years after the War Between The States for a now defunct southern newspaper. This memoir was recently discovered tucked away in county probate records and probably not studied by historians for details about the W.B.T.S. in the deep South.
Sprott, tells the story of the 40th Alabama Infantry, Stone's Battalion and Ector's Brigade. I was especially interested in information about General Ector and his brigade as little is written about this unit especially at the battle of Chickamauga. He will educate you about the everyday life of the Confederate soldier in the Army of Tennessee. His and fellow comrade's trials and jubilations are all there.
The editors do a fine job coordinating Sprott's manuscript, filling in his thoughts and corroborating historical evidence.

Cush - A Review.......2000-08-09

Any Civil War buff will find Dr. Louis Smith's "Cush" to be an outstanding addition to his/her personal library. It is an account that brings countless historical facts that will enrich that library in terms of the military engagements fought by Samuel Sprott and his men. But there is more to this work than the simple regurgitation of historical fact -- this is a book that reflects the struggles and privations of the everyday Civil War soldier as he endured the reality of his world: rotten weather, whizzing minnie balls, the deaths of his comrades. "Cush" is a look at the humanity behind the facts. It puts the reader in the Civil War -- fighting next to Sprott and his compatriots.

As a high school US History teacher, I have found that it is books such as "Cush" that makes history come alive to students. They can feel the emotion with which Sprott's story is told. And, because it is a primary source - straight from the "horse's mouth", it has much more credibility to it than the facts they can glean from their text books.

Dr. Smith has done a marvelous job of editing Sprott's papers. The work was no doubt tedious but at the same time must have been intensely rewarding when it was finished. After reading the book, I have come to feel like I knew Samuel Sprott on a personal basis!

Sprott's Memoir: Good Read and Resource.......2000-08-04

This is an excellent primary source for a soldier's eye view of the daily experinece of the civil war. Unembelished with romantic bravado or the mythology of causes, Captain Samuel Sprott's journal of the experiences of the 40th Alabama regiment presents the reality of war for the common soldier- general bordome and petty detail alongside short episodes of battle, tragedy, and confusion. Smith and Quist do an excellent job of providing essential supporting information in the preface and appendix while avoiding the temptation to intrude upon Sprott's narrations. The book should be a hit in the classroom as a primary document that is brief, easy to read, and relatively inexpensive. For the same reasons it is recommended to the general reader.

It will make you laugh and cry..........2000-05-11

"Cush: A Civil War Journal" is a great book from the point of view of a "run of the mill" Alabama infantry soldier. That is, the grunt who did most of the work and most of the dying.

Samuel Sprott was under 90 days of constant bombardment from Sherman's forces during the Atlanta campaign. It becomes so common that when he encounters a General of a Texas regiment whom he had met during the siege of Vicksburg, he casually and calmly sits down to breakfast with bullets wizzing by and artillery exploding around the two of them.

I cried when I read of their charge over an open field against the breastworks of the entrenched Union soldiers. They marched over the first hundred yards, dropped down taking a rest, and then jumped up and charged the rest of the way. People dying left and right. Brave or crazy these men were... but it made me cry.

I laughed when Sprott got caught out on a picket line when the Yankees charged. He relates the Yankee telling him to stop but he turned and ran for his life determining better to die than be captured. The Yankee got off shot after shot as Sprott zigged and zagged trying not to be shot. When you read it, you will see the humor.

I was struck by his observations of women in South Carolina versus the women in North Carolina. I was also struck by how little he says when his older brother is mortally wounded.

If you enjoy reading real history of the Civil War, you will love this book.
