Customer Reviews:
Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07
I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!
Great for more advanced courses...........2006-12-12
I bought this book as a study aid for my Elementary Statistics class. Although the book does give you many examples to help solve, it gets a little too complicated for a beginning statistics class. It became hard to sort through the things I needed to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. If you are needing this book for your job or a more advanced statistics course, I would recommend it, but it's one for the beginner to leave alone.
Comprehensive Guide to Statistics.......2006-06-13
This excellent book provides a comprehensive look at statistical methods. It's a great reference guide with 19 chapters, each of which build nicely on one another.
Chapters 1 through 11 lay the foundation of statistical study and the reader should benefit greatly from this framework.
Specifically, Chapters 1 through 3 cover Variables and Graphs, Frequency Distributions and Mean-Median-Mode concepts. Chapters 4 through 6 move on to cover Standard Deviation, Skewness and Elementary Probability Theory. Chapter 7 then discusses Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions.
Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 delve into Sampling, Statistical Estimation, Statistical Decision and Small Sampling Theory.
The remaining chapters offer practical insights into such topics as Chi-Square test, Correlation Theory, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Time Series Analysis and Statistical Process Control. Much of this appears in the CFA curriculum and therefore is a worthy supplemental study.
True to its format, this Schaum's book helps readers via its question and answer format in each of its chapters. Going through these problems teaches and reinforces concepts taught in the first pages of each chapter in the book.
Great job authors! I'm hoping others will benefit from this book too.
Schaum's Outline of Statistics.......2006-03-03
This is a handy desk guide to statistics for someone who needs a statistical referemce as part of their job but is not a statistician, ie, performance management, data preparation or other information analysis. I compared this book to many others and found it the most comprehensive.
A Failed Attempt .......2005-01-12
This book is sloppily edited, with numerous typos in the equations. Page 91 has two symbolic errors plus a text error.
Overbar omitted twice on page 19 giving a nonsensical formula Z = (X - X)/s
Book Description
Modelling with the Itô integral or stochastic differential equations has become increasingly important in various applied fields, including physics, biology, chemistry and finance. However, stochastic calculus is based on a deep mathematical theory.
This book is suitable for the reader without a deep mathematical background. It gives an elementary introduction to that area of probability theory, without burdening the reader with a great deal of measure theory. Applications are taken from stochastic finance. In particular, the Black-Scholes option pricing formula is derived. The book can serve as a text for a course on stochastic calculus for non-mathematicians or as elementary reading material for anyone who wants to learn about Itô calculus and/or stochastic finance.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction.......2007-09-01
This book provides an excellent mild introduction of stochastic calculus and stochastic differential equations to someone like me who do not have a first mathematics degree (haven't done measure theories). Although the final chapter on application to finance is not as good as other financial maths books such as Joshi's Concepts and Baxter&Rennie's Financial Calculus. Overall, this book sets some firm grounds for further studies on stochastic calculus & financial maths. In addition, the price is low for this book with a hardcover.
Not for beginners or intermediates.......2007-03-04
This book may be fine if you have at least an undergraduate degree in math. I have an engineering degree with a minor in math, have read many books on quantitative finance, read math books and work math problems for furn, have several years' work experience in analyzing and hedging with derivatives, am taking a course in quantitative finance, and have worked many problems in stochastic calculus. I was actually MORE confused AFTER reading this book (I'm not exaggerating). This book should definitely not have "elementary" in the title.
But whatever your level, there are other books that cover the topic much more clearly and comprehensively. Start with Nefti's Intro to the Mathematics of Financial Derivatives; it's the best. Then read Joshi's Concepts and Practices of Mathematical Finance. Then you may be able to understand Steele's Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications. Steele doesn't pretend to be a book for beginners, but it is actually more comprehensible to beginners than Mikosch's book.
But if you are more comfortable with reams of mathematical notation and do not require much explanation of that notation, Mikosch may be just what you want.
A well organised and high standard little book.......2007-01-17
It is amazing that the author can expose the difficult topics step-by-step clearly in such a little book of less than 200 pages. Mikosch starts the book by introducing basic probability theories and stochastic processes which are prerequisite for the development of stochastic integrals, techniques for solving stochastic differential equations and applications in modern finance. However, reader should be aware that although the book is recommended for those without "deep" mathematical background, it is not suitable for average advanced undergraduates and practitioners without serious statistics and advanced claculus trainings. In my opinion, this book is suitable for those whos have finished the book like Financial Calculus by Baxter and Rennie and are looking for more formal details of the subject matter.
Best introduction.......2007-01-08
if you're looking for an introduction to stochastic calculus that uses english and pictures instead of mathematical symbols, this is the place to start. only problem is that it doesn't cover very much, just the very basics. much easier than oksendel. i wish it covered as much.
Best start.......2006-11-30
This is an excellent book to start with before reading any book on continuous time finance.
The author actually spends only the last dozen of pages related to finance, but you get all the preparation you need before learning about derivatives pricing.

Customer Reviews:
Nice concepts, weak on details.......2002-10-29
This book asks lots of great questions and makes a lot of great statements. However, it lacks any depth as far as providing practical information about implementing a mentoring program. (eg. no examples, case studies, etc...)
The content is a good introduction to mentoring - but probably comprable to what you'd find in a chapter in most any "Managing 101" type of book.
I would not recommend this book.

Book Description
Ecologists and environmental managers rely on mathematical models, both to understand ecological systems and to predict future system behaviour. In turn, models rely on appropriate estimates of their parameters. This book brings together a diverse and scattered literature, to provide clear guidance on how to estimate parameters for models of animal populations. It is not a recipe book of statistical procedures. Instead, it concentrates on how to select the best approach to parameter estimation for a particular problem, and how to ensure that the quality estimated is the appropriate one for the specific purpose of the modeling exercise.
Customer Reviews:
too mushy.......2007-01-26
It makes Peter Horry and Francis Marion to mushy. I wanted the fighting side not the staring into each others eyes and appearing to fall in love scenero.Peter Horry was not pleased with it and told the Rev. to do what he wished with it and it was printed. This could have been addedlater but for the beginning it turned me off.
It's not about poor Marion:.......2001-03-05
Poor, good and brave General Francis Marion. A true american hero. What a hack job this book is. This book is actually about General Peter Horry, who served with Marion during our American Revolution and uses poor Marion as a backdrop to blow his (Horry's) egotistic horn. Some may accept the author Weems, use of flowery language as "the style of the times," but it is no more than silly platitudes towards Marion, that quickly become offensive as one realizes the real purpose was/is to build up Horry through association with the great Marion. Horry just isn't up to the compairson. This is not a book worthy of it's proported subject.
Truly outstanding.......2000-08-19
Written in 1824, the poetic descriptions are seldom found in todays authors. Captures the spirit of the times and causes one to cheer the heroics of the brave American soldiers. The citizens of the USA today owe such a debt to those who fought for our freedom, yet, we hardly hear a word about these times. Should be required reading in schools and universities.
LIFE OF FRANCIS MARION............2000-06-30
THIS BOOK IS ONE ONE THAT MAKES THE SWAMP FOX GLOW. ITS PREFACE ALLOWS THE READER TO SEE THAT IT WAS WRITTEN BY REV. WEEMS WHO HAS A VERY ROMANTIC VIEW OF THIS FINE REVOLUTIONARY OFFICER. IN THIS BOOK THE GENERAL CAN DO NO WRONG AND IS BASICALLY FLAWLESS. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AUTHOR STARTED THE MYTHS ABOUT WASHINGTON NEVER BEING ABLE TO TELL A LIE AND CHOPPING DOWN THE CHERRY TREE. OVERALL, IT IS A FEEL GOOD BOOK THAT MAKES ONE ROOT FOR THE CONTINENTALS. THE ONLY NEGATIVE IS THAT THE BOOKS SCOPE IS TOO BROAD, AND DRIFTS FROM THE SWAMP FOX TO OTHER PLAYERS IN THE WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE
Book Description
No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant memoir, Jim Wight talks about his father--the beloved veterinarian whom his family had to share with half the world.
Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) grew up in Glasgow, where he lived during a happy rough-and-tumble childhood and then through the challenging years of training at the Glasgow Veterinary College. The story of how the young vet later traveled to the small Yorkshire town of Thirsk, aka Darrowby, to take the job of assistant vet is one that is well known through James Herriot's internationally celebrated books and the popular All Creatures Great and Small television series.
But Jim Wight's biography ventures beyond the trials and tribulations of his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate remembrances of all the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.
Customer Reviews:
A Personal Glimpse at a Favorite Author.......2000-12-26
This is a most enjoyable book allowing a glimpse into the life of one of my favorite authors. It was interesting to learn about the situations that molded the life of James Herriot (Alf Wight).
The Real James Herriot.......2000-08-21
-James Herriot was a country animal doctor who recanted his life into stories, which became All Creatures Great and Small and other books and audios. His son, Jim Wight, upon his father's death, composed a tribute to a man we all thought we knew in The Real James Herriot. The abridged audio version is narrated by TV's James Herriot, actor Christopher Timothy. His familiar tramping of the characters and Herriot's words makes him the perfect choice to read this veneration.
