    Book Description

Don't Kill the Bosses! is a cool-headed blueprint for changing companies by challenging the idea of boss-dominated relationships. The book explores the critical flaw of the boss/subordinate relationship: Management fails to establish a framework for subordinates to communicate in a forthright manner, so subordinates spin the facts for their bosses.

The book identifies the culprit as one-sided accountability and shows the consequences: warped communication, corrupt internal politics, illusionary teamwork, and a pass-the-buck mentality. The proposed solution is surprisingly simple: Replace this particular hierarchical relationship -- without disposing of the organizational chart -- with an alternative model. The authors demonstrate how to establish candid, equal-footing relationships that allow organizations to work effectively and productively.

    5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening and Mind-Opening.......2002-04-13

This is an excellent book which has begun to significantly change the way I perceive my workplace and how I act within it. These new insights by Culbert and Ullmen are exceptionally focused and proactive - And I have been looking for some methods of dealing with these issues that are both realistic and EFFECTIVE. After many years in the workforce, I was beginning to look at many organizations and systems with a "that's just the way it is" mentality - but this book has well-defined strategies for breaking out of that trap. I highly recommend this book for all businesses - but especially my co-workers and friends in large companies - who can benefit greatly in their dealings with large-company politics and management issues.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply one of the best books of management I've read!.......2002-04-04

Don't kill the bosses has been an eye-opener to me and all the people I gave it to. It showed me the origins of wicked and unsuccessful boss-subordinate relationships and the means to radically alter this unsatisfactory state of affairs.
Applying the principles of this book can improve both the efficiency of work and the meaning that bosses and subordinates derive from it.
    This is an absolutely must-read!

2 out of 5 stars Makes you want to expire the bosses.......2002-02-22

This is an excellent book to help you understand what not to do as a boss! However, if you are an employee who is dealing with a bad boss, there is no practical advise on to either 1) help you cope better, and 2) somehow get this information filtered up through the hierarchy. If you are an employee trying to get a better understanding of how to cope with the egocentric, bent on the hierarchy type boss, this book unfortunately will not help you.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2002-02-20

Let me repeat one more time. This is a must have! Everyone who reads this book will come out of it with a much clearer understanding and picture of boss/subordinate relationships. Easy to read. Compelling. If you are committed to improving your relationship, whether it be with your boss, your team and/or co-workers, or for just plain personal development, this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for your boss!.......2001-11-16

I wish this book had come out a few years ago: I would have given it to my last boss. He was inspired as a leader and devoted to our organization's mission. However, he created an environment in which hierarchy dictated all relationships and communication. As a result, lots of great people left after only a few years. Had this book been out then, I would have gotten it for him as a holiday gift. It offers focused analysis of pitfalls that characterized our organization, why and how those pitfalls cause so much damage, and how to repair them and create a new corporate culture. Hopefully others will be able to benefit!

Its a good book, easy to read but the chapter cover a lot of material in one chapter.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-09-10

I took one basic biology course in college and have never taken a chemestry class, so parts of the book were over my head. However, the book was everything I had hoped, covering a number of topics at a level I could easily grasp. If you want to really understand the role of microbiology in plant growth and how it afffects the soil in so many ways, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars very handy well written book.......2003-06-13

This book was recommended to me by my tutor at university and he was right good well written easy to use book on a complex subject. I still use it today and think its an essential in any soil or agricultural consultants library.

              Book Description

Near Earth Objects (NEOs), asteroids and comets, are the closest neighbors of the Earth-Moon system. They allow research not yet possible on more distant bodies. The IAU Symposium 236 focused on the specific observation and modeling techniques for NEOs, including radar, exploration by spacecraft, measurement of non-gravitational perturbations; also on the next generation surveys expected to increase a hundred-fold the NEO discovery rate. With data from first generation NEO surveys, we now understand how they formed and evolve, dynamically and physically, opening a window on the universal astrophysical phenomenon of collision, leaving clear markings on the surfaces of planets, including the Earth. NEOs with orbits crossing that of the Earth are also a source of impact risks and potential NEO collisions with the Earth represent a long term threat. Mankind has to put in place a chain of mitigating actions; NEO astronomers have successfully put in place the first link.

                  Book Description

CAMD or Computer Aided Molecular Design refers to the design of molecules with desirable properties. That is, through CAMD, one determines molecules that match a specified set of (target) properties. CAMD as a technique has a very large potential as in principle, all kinds of chemical, bio-chemical and material products can be designed through this technique.

This book mainly deals with macroscopic properties and therefore does not cover molecular design of large, complex chemicals such as drugs. While books have been written on computer aided molecular design relating to drugs and large complex chemicals, a book on systematic formulation of CAMD problems and solutions, with emphasis on theory and practice, which helps one to learn, understand and apply the technique is currently unavailable.

                  · This title brings together the theoretical aspects related to Computer Aided Molecular Design, the different techniques that have been developed and the different applications that have been reported.
                  · Contributing authors are among the leading researchers and users of CAMD
                  · First book available giving a systematic formulation of CAMD problems and solutions

I found Mr. Acnenie's text to be very interesting and thought provoking. It's the way Mr. Acnenie has unique ways of covering
Computer Molecular Design, that if a person doesn't comprehend a specific part of the text;there is always other explanations in its simplicity to back his theories up with. I srongly reccomend the vast majority of free thinkers, who would want to absorb the knowledge Mr. Achiene is offering, than you shoul purchase this book on Amazon. One of the best information texts I have ever read!

                    Book Description

The first biography of Nathan "Shanks" Evans, an important Confederate general, based upon a large cache of newly discovered and previously unpublished sources.

Until now, little has been known about Nathan "Shanks" Evans, a prominent and highly controversial Confederate general who served throughout the Civil War in several theaters of operations. Thankfully, because of a recently discovered cache of his personal papers--long rumored to exist but never before seen--it is now possible to present his fascinating Civil War odyssey largely in his own words.

Shanks covers Evans's entire amazing career, from his brave stand with a brigade at the famous stone bridge at First Manassas to his controversial months in North and South Carolina, where his erratic and harsh behavior earned the ire of much of his subordinate officer corps. Fighting in nearly every important campaign of the war, the famous brigade under his command was so well traveled it was known throughout the army as "The Tramp Brigade." Viewing the Civil War and the actions of his men through Evans's eyes is an engrossing new perspective and adds substantially to the literature of the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and neat biography.......2006-03-03

This relatively short (200+ pages) and workmanlike biography is the first book-length account of the life of Nathan G. Evans. A West Point graduate in 1848 (near the bottom of his class), his first military experiences occurred fighting Indians as a Dragoon in the West. A native of South Carolina, he resigned from the army in 1861 and threw his hat in with the Confederacy. Put in charge of a cavalry brigade of South Carolinians, he distinguished himself at First Bull Run and Balls Bluff a few months later. Success continued to follow him at Second Bull Run, South Mountain (where with a diminished force he helped save Rodes's division from annihilation), Antietam, and Vicksburg. But then troubles began to replace his successes, caused probably by a harsh and unsteady temperament. He was tried for drunkenness and acquitted, and then for disobedience, for which he was also acquitted. But the damage to his reputation was done, and many of his superiors (Beauregard in particular) had little use for him. Injured in a fall from his horse in 1864, he didn't see duty again until the war was almost lost. He was a high school principal after the war, but lived only until 1868.

Silverman, et. al., have used the newly-discovered letters and papers of Evans well in constructing this life. They have defined a very specific task at hand - relating Evans's rather short life - and have not wavered from it with superfluous information or analysis. It's a very direct and proficient biography; it will not win awards for style. Illustrations are included, but, unfortunately, no maps. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging read and scholarly sound.......2002-08-07

I purchased this book a few weeks back because it was written by one of my favorite college professors and advisor, Dr. Silverman at Winthrop, hoping the book would be as good as his lectures. I was not disapointed.

For someone unitiated to the life of General Evans, like myself, the narrative portions of the book gave a real feel for his times and motivations. The battle descriptions are certainly more than who moved his forces where and such. A real sense of the character of Gen. Evans and how his leadership style meshed with the flow of the Confederate Army opened up to me the depth of the military action and struggle of battles, like Manassess, that I am already familiar with.

Letting the participants speak for themselves through their own personal letters is well done, especially since the narrative flows well with the letters.

Again, the only complaint would be the lack of maps, other than that this is a fine read for the general reader and for those concerned with the details of the Civil War and Confederate leadership.

5 out of 5 stars The First Biography of Shanks Evans Is a Solid Success.......2002-07-24

Winthrop University historians Jason Silverman and Samuel Thomas have teamed up with the late Beverly Evans to produce a thoroughly enjoyable biography of Confederate Brigadier General Nathan "Shanks" Evans of Marion, South Carolina.

The strength of the book lies in the authors' skillful use of the private papers of General Evans that his descendent, Beverly Evans, had carefully conserved and made available to his two co-authors. Rather than foisting their own interpretations of Evans on the reader, the authors allow the general to speak for himself, mostly through his previously unpublished family letters as well as his military correspondence. The picture of Evans that emerges from the book is at odds with the common perception of him as an impetuous, brawling brigadier with a fondness for alcohol.

A West Point graduate and an accomplished Indian fighter before the war, Evans' resigned his commission in the U.S. Army shortly after his native state seceded from the Union. Despite his spectacular early successes at First Manassas, Ball's Bluff and Secessionville, and solid performances at Second Manassas and Antietam, Evans' promotions stalled out at the rank of brigadier general. His failure to obtain the coveted rank of major general traced to a series of running disputes with both his subordinate and his superior officers that resulted in two courts martial of Evans during 1863. Though acquitted in both proceedings, Evans' public reputation never recovered, and he spent the balance of the war in obscurity. He died in 1868, aged only 44, still struggling to rebuild his life from the war.

Superbly written and grounded in sound research, SHANKS contains some previously unpublished photographs of Evans and his family. Maps would have augmented the battle descriptions. But despite their absence SHANKS is a fine book that sheds positive, new light on an obscure but important military figure. Readers with an interest in South Carolina, or in the early Civil War in the East, will especially enjoy the book.

                      Book Description

In a world of HMOs, insurance companies, and an endless flood of forms, Hull Cook reminds us that there was a time when a visit to the doctor's office cost three dollars and doctors still made house calls. Cook recounts fifty years of service as a rural doctor in Texas and Nebraska, where a wide spectrum of dilemmas tested his resourcefulness, endurance, and sense of humor. He describes helping to deliver a baby via telephone during the Blizzard of '49, and he explains his "special delivery" of medication in the dead of winter-an operation involving his Beechcraft Bonanza airplane and a parachute jerry-rigged from dental floss and a red handkerchief. Cook saw it all, from cow-manure poultices to snakebite to kerosene poisoning to drug addiction. His humorous account of life in the first half of the twentieth century conveys a distinct sense of the slings and arrows of doctoring on the plains. Hull Cook is a retired physician in Sidney, Nebraska. This is his first book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious.......2001-11-09

I wasn't looking for humor per se when I got this. I thought this might be a little glimpse into years gone by and some shrewd cowboy psychology or something - and to some extent, it is that as well. I found myself laughing a lot at some of the stories, despite Cooks attempt to handle some of the topics with "discretion". Great look at a different time and a different mentality. Can't think of a doctor I wouldn't recommend it to - they might learn something!
