The Theory of Ethical Economy in the Historical School: Wilhelm Roscher, Lorenz von Stein, Gustav Schmoller, Wilhelm Dilthey and Contemporary Theory (Studies in Economic Ethics and Philosophy)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540590706 |
Book Description
The Historical School of Economics develops a historical theory of the economy and of business ethics. It investigates the ethical and cultural determinants of economic behaviour and economic institutions and forms an ethical and cultural theory of economics and business and the origin what, in the present, is called "institutional economics". Being one of the first comprehensive studies in the English language of the German "Historical and Ethical School of Economics", the book presents the theory from Wilhelm Roscher to Gustav Schmoller, the foundations of historism and the humanities of Wilhelm Dilthey and their present relevance. It also makes visible which impact the Historical School has for the foundations of contemporary business ethics and the cultural theory of the economy.

MEGACHANGE: How Today's Leading Companies Have Transformed Their Workforces
William F. Joyce Manufacturer: Free Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0684856255 |

Some of the best companies in the world are flourishing by dramatically revising their management practices, according to Dartmouth College teacher William F. Joyce. In MegaChange, Joyce looks at how Lucent Technologies, CitiGroup, Price Waterhouse, and other top businesses are instituting nontraditional management techniques.Joyce believes that global competition, rapid advances in technology, and new workplace values are necessitating profound changes in the way organizations manage their workforces. He argues that successful managers recognize that people today are demanding job satisfaction, which is a vastly different situation from 20 years ago, when surveys found that 95 percent of workers didn't expect to be satisfied with their work. "We must be competitive, but we must do it in a way that recognizes the desire--perhaps the demand--for meaningful and valuable work, the recognition of family and personal satisfaction." Joyce calls for igniting change in four ways: empowering the workforce, improving policies, creating organizations that engage people, and sharpening strategy. MegaChange is for managers searching for innovative ways to save their organizations from stifling bureaucracies and engage their employees in a culture that is both productive and significant. --Dan Ring
Book Description
In the last decade, organizations of every type -- from the largest transnational corporations to local neighborhood nonprofits -- have spent billions of dollars attempting to improve productivity and efficiency. But while 85 percent of U.S.-based corporations engaged in some type of restructuring between 1990 and 1995, most of these changes were not successful. Indeed, 60 percent reported not having achieved their goals, and 44 percent said things had actually gotten worse. Almost 70 percent attempted to restructure again within a year.
Sadly, despite this enormous waste, the vast majority of companies remains wedded to archaic management methods and practices that bury creativity under a mind-numbing avalanche of pointless bureaucratic systems and procedures that deny their employees' need for satisfying work.
The problem, explains William F. Joyce, is that these traditional methods and practices are based on an assumption of human limitations -- rather than human capability -- and thus are "flawed in a most fundamental way." In his radical reassessment of management practices, Joyce explains that, in order to succeed in the future, business needs to make a complete turnaround in its approach to employees: Instead of making human fallibility and lack of potential the foundation of organizational structure, management must begin from an assumption of human capability and talent.
Joyce's "New logic for Change" is composed of four critical steps: Empowering the Workforce, Engaging Systems, Reforming Structures, and Remaking Strategy. Conceived and developed while the author was guiding-large-scale change at Nabisco, Citibank, and Aetna (during its acquisition of U.S. Healthcare), the MegaChange system creates an organizational culture that emphasizes not just human value, but human values, and is based on the importance -- both for the individual employee and for the organization as a whole -- of meaningful work.

PLACING PEOPLE AT THE CENTER OF ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE........1999-12-06
MegaChange describes a process of transformation based on assumptions of human capability, rather than limitations. The approach focuses on people (below the top) and assumes that they have valid input, can be trusted, and can play a vital role in the change process. Key themes are: greater emphasis on human values, goals, capabilties, and efficacy; placing people at the center of strategy, structure and systems; approaching change from a top-down-bottom-up sequence of development activities, involving two parallel, synergistic efforts: (1) strategy-driven, organization-wide transition in systems and structures and (2) a transformation in culture, beginning with the workforce.
The main body of the book is devoted to explaining this change process. This work provides an excellent perspective on the nature of organizational change and presents an approach to change that, based on my own consulting experience in this area, should be read-and given thoughtful consideration-by top executives. Highly recommended. Book Description
In an era of escalating food politics, many believe organic farming to be the agrarian answer. In this first comprehensive study of organic farming in California, Julie Guthman casts doubt on the current wisdom about organic food and agriculture, at least as it has evolved in the Golden State. Refuting popular portrayals of organic agriculture as a small-scale family farm endeavor in opposition to "industrial" agriculture, Guthman explains how organic farming has replicated what it set out to oppose.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Angular momentum is a basic concept used in classical physics. Examples of phenomena that are related to angular momentum are: 1) Why a moving bicycle does not fall over and 2) why the currents in the ocean of the rotating earth tend to follow circular motions. Designed as a learning tool for those with limited background in quantum mechanics and to compliment Zare's Angular Momentum, this book provides examples, problems, & solutions in angular momentum in quantum mechanics and its applications to chemistry and physics.Customer Reviews:

Inverse Eigenvalue Problems: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications (Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation)
Moody T. Chu , and Gene H. Golub Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198566646 |
Book Description
Inverse eigenvalue problems arise in a remarkable variety of applications and associated with any inverse eigenvalue problem are two fundamental questions--the theoretical issue of solvability and the practical issue of computability. Both questions are difficult and challenging. In this text, the authors discuss the fundamental questions, some known results, many applications, mathematical properties, a variety of numerical techniques, as well as several open problems. This is the first book in the authoritative bNumerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation/b series to cover numerical linear algebra, a broad area of numerical analysis. Authored by two world-renowned researchers, the book is aimed at graduates and researchers in applied mathematics, engineering and computer science and makes an ideal graduate text.

Book Description
"One has to be a superb writer to lift the story about the wheelchair that Peter Weisman was confined in from his tenth year and waltz around with it so brilliantly. But that is what Weisman, who vowed that 'Peter's life must grow steadily and bravely upward,' has done. There are times when the power of Weisman's prose squeezes the heart like a sponge, but perhaps the best moments leave you laughing."—Phyllis Theroux, Washington Post
