5 out of 5 stars Put this on the desk of new HR people.......2000-10-07

When your new HR folks report to work, this is one of the books to have sitting on their desks. A good reference. As the title says, this is a book for employers, not external recruiters. I would recommend it for internal use.

Wayne D. Ford, Ph.D., author, "Breakthrough Technical Recruiting" docwifford@msn.com

    3 out of 5 stars Beginners.......2000-01-31

A lot of USEFUL INFO for a beginner or Junior level HR and Recruiting professional.... like the URL's of career websites and HR organisations but no indepth information for seasoned Recruiters.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the reluctant HR professional.......1999-01-16

Every field of study needs an "introductory text", a book which clearly lays out all the basics of the field in a clear concise manner. This book is that text. It not only fully describes the field of Internet Recruiting, it is written in a funny, engaging manner, that will keep the attention of my reluctant HR staff. That is why I give it 5 stars. It is what it says it is: A guide for Employer's about recruiting on the Internet. I echo the words of the individual from LA. If you what advanced sourcing strategies then take a course from Tiburon or AIRS. But if you want to bring your HR staff up to the level needed to take these advanced classes, then have them read this book. I would also recommend that as a companion to this book you also purchase Careerxroads by Grispin and Mehler. Both books together make an excellent starting point to fully understanding the Internet Recruiting Marketplace.

3 out of 5 stars This is for HR but not technical recruiters.......1998-12-31

Like the person from Malibu, I found this book to be extremely helpful for a Human Resources professional who is new to the internet. However, if you are already savvy with internet search engines, seeking candidates on the usenet and utilizing the multitude of internet resources, this book is not for you. If you are looking for advanced candidate resourcing strategies, take a class from AIRS or Tiburon Consulting. Overall, it didn't serve my purposes but, speaking from personal experience, this book is sorely need by many HR professionals and it could help them immensely.

    2 out of 5 stars Fair.......1998-12-30

Although I found some of the content interesting and worthwhile, I did not find it that it helped me enough in my day-to-day needs as a recruiter.

Hardbound. Natural products chemistry covers a fascinating area of organic chemistry and its study has enriched organic chemistry in a myriad of different ways. In recent years the thrust has been in three major directions: advances in stereoselective synthesis of bioactive natural products, developments in structure elucidation of complex natural products through the applications of multidimensional NMR and mass spectroscopy, and the integration of bioassay procedures with the isolation processes leading to the isolation of active principles from the extracts. The present volume reflects these developments, and the growing emphasis on bioactive natural products, chemical constituents of echinoderms, diterpenoids from Rabdosia and Eremophila sp., structural studies on saponins, marine sesquiterpene quinones and antimicrobial activity of amphibian venoms. The reviews on bioactive metabolites of Phomophis, cardenolide detection

                                      Book Description

The theory of Gamma-convergence is commonly recognized as an ideal and flexible tool for the description of the asymptotic behaviour of variational problems. Its applications range from the mathematical analysis of composites to the theory of phase transitions, from Image Processing to Fracture Mechanics. This text, written by an expert in the field, provides a brief and simple introduction to this subject, based on the treatment of a series of fundamental problems that illustrate the main features and techniques of Gamma-convergence and at the same time provide a stimulating starting point for further studies. The main part is set in a one-dimensional framework that highlights the main issues of Gamma-convergence without the burden of higher-dimensional technicalities. The text deals in sequence with increasingly complex problems, first treating integral functionals, then homogenisation, segmentation problems, phase transitions, free-discontinuity problems and their discrete and continuous approximation, making stimulating connections among those problems and with applications. The final part is devoted to an introduction to higher-dimensional problems, where more technical tools are usually needed, but the main techniques of Gamma-convergence illustrated in the previous section may be applied unchanged. The book and its structure originate from the author's experience in teaching courses on this subject to students at PhD level in all fields of Applied Analysis, and from the interaction with many specialists in Mechanics and Computer Vision, which have helped in making the text addressed also to a non-mathematical audience. The material of the book is almost self-contained, requiring only some basic notion of Measure Theory and Functional Analysis.

Though Dan Summitt retired from the U.S Navy years ago, he still regrets not receiving clearance to fill a submarine missile tube with thirty-five thousand pounds of wet grits and launch it at a very pesky Russian spy ship. In Tales of a Cold War Submariner, Summitt tells the story of his military career, proving that navy life at the height of the Cold War as commander of two nuclear submarines kept him on his toes. He relates his work with Adm. Hyman Rickover, recounts the efforts to stay undetected while patrolling for Soviet submarines, and shares the everyday dangers faced by a submarine crew. Summitt graduated from the Naval Academy in 1947, entered Submarine School, and rose to become deputy chief of staff for the commander of the Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet and chief of staff for the Submarine Flotilla 8. He served as commander of the USS Seadragon on its secret mission to the North Pole, where he rendezvoused with the USS Skate to conduct experiments under the ice. Summitt later took command of the USS Alexander Hamilton, one of forty-one Polaris-class nuclear submarines, which carried sixteen thirty-five-foot-tall missiles. Summitt takes the reader on a tour of this vessel, describing daily life and the routine and not-so-routine missions in close quarters with no outside contact for days or even months.

Through it all, the fear of mechanical malfunctions, detection, or imminent attack always lingered. Summitt's anecdotes and descriptions capture this tense era in history.

"For a long time I used to try to read Proust," recalls Phyllis Rose, evoking both the somnolent opening salvo of Remembrance of Things Past and her own resistance to that mighty, melancholic masterpiece. Happily, she did get around to it. And even better, she recorded her dogged progress through all seven installments--and her own, shall we say, parallel life--in The Year of Reading Proust: A Memoir in Real Time. The result is an irresistible hybrid of autobiography, rumination, and lit crit, in which the author puts one Proustian principle after another into action. Some of these efforts end up backfiring on Rose. For example, her attempt to tar a friend with the French novelist's paradoxical brush causes her some deep embarrassment:
Paradox always leads you to a sort of truth, for it gets at truth's many-sidedness. But the tone of what I wrote David, although it amused him, was not Proustian. There's a sweetness that comes with complex understanding, and I didn't have it. The bitterness of my sterility flowed into the style, creating of Annie, whom I sometimes loved, sometimes scorned, sometimes envied, sometimes resented, sometimes relished, and sometimes pitied, a creature of blanket unattractiveness and of myself uncomplicated malice.
Here, of course, the author is being hard on herself, articulating precisely the sort of complexity that she's supposed to be incapable of. The paradox might evoke a faint smile from Proust himself--who also might have relished the pinpoint social observation and relentless honesty of Rose's book. Whether she's recording a late-breaking entente between herself and her mother, or the details of a dinner party for blaspheming bad boy Salman Rushdie, or her own career disappointments, the author withholds nothing. At the same time, she delivers any number of big-picture truths, occasionally wrapping them in you-know-who's favorite sort of simile: "As at a big party, you approach people you haven't seen in a long time with benevolence and perhaps a little too much joy, fearing that you've forgotten how close you were, in a long friendship, you might approach your friend with a tentativeness and uncertainty unwarranted by the degree of affection you feel for her, but understandable in the light of human forgetfulness and the complexity of your particular exchanges." It's all here--generosity, mortification, high intelligence, and top-quality gossip, along with enough Proustian moments to last any reader at least a year. --James Marcus

                                          Book Description

A brilliant and original memoir of midlife-a writing life, a reading life, a woman's life-by the distinguished author of Parallel Lives

Phyllis Rose, a biographer, essayist, and literary critic, finally got around to reading Proust in middle age. As Rose learned, you don't have to live through an unhappy childhood or celebrity adulthood to write an autobiography. You just need patience, candor, and a close-to-scientific passion for truth. She begins to learn how to navigate the intricacies of Proust's novels, at the same time reflecting on the course of her own life.

With striking honesty, Rose writes about marriage, friendship, childbirth, and her own mortality. As she moves from daily experience to what she's read and back again, she illuminates how the close reading of her own life reveals truths for the rest of us and how such a subtle celebration of books can help us live.

5 out of 5 stars What we learn from reading books.......2006-08-22

An essayist's way of writing a book is to pile up one chapter after another. The opening section of SWANN'S WAY seems, slow, static to Rose. The author read Proust for more than a year. At the time of the writing of this book she had not yet read the sixth volume, IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME.

Every reader of Proust has to find his own reason for moving ahead. Reading Proust is what Rose did when she first got up in the morning. For a year she made Proust the business of her life. At the end of BUDDING GROVE Marcel refers to himself as a human naturalist. Reading Proust gave Rose mastery of the social life she lived in Key West. Reading Proust made Rose a connoisseur of similes. Proust provides the literary equivalent of the freeze frame.

By volume five, reading Proust had become essential escapism. The author lives with a fear of disaster. She like an even-textured daily life. Joyce, Woolf, and Proust compressed time, one day, etc., and wove strands, themes around chronological points, developing deep time and other devices. Proust and the author both had happy childhoods.

When her father was dying Phyllis Rose could only tolerate reading THE DEATH OF IVAN ILYICH. Time moves in only one direction, toward weakness and death. Aging artists come to value their secondary talents. The volume takes off from the themes of Proust to recount other facts and matters of concern to the writer. It seems that Annie Dillard and the writer are soul mates. Cancer scares and parental deaths in their age group seem frequent.

Hemingway started writing FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS in Key West. His large house with Pauline attracted too many guests. He left Florida for Cuba, seeking peace and quiet. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was so popular in Florida that even her maid wrote a book.

A literary work is an experience in time. Novels are the most uncondensable literary works. Every reader in reading reads himself. The writer of a memoir, the volume under review is a memoir, is a traveler in time.

1 out of 5 stars A Proust Character Come to Life!.......2004-09-25

There are characters in Proust that are so cartoonishly shallow, vain, parochial, and lacking in self-knowledge that one laughs in spite of thinking no such person could exist in real life.

Phyllis Rose proves that such people do exist.

Of course it is possible that her book is a satiric fiction disguised as autobiography. If so, it is not funny enough. (Learn from Proust!) If this really is an autobiography, it is surprising that an author would allow publication of something that makes her look so ridiculous.

2 out of 5 stars A year of not reading Phyllis Rose.......2003-05-08

Ms Rose is without a doubt a talented writer, but her work here is tediously self-indulgent and trite and sheds very little light on Proust, or indeed on his effect on her. Give it a miss and read the master! I don't think I'll be visiting Ms Rose's other work anytime soon...

1 out of 5 stars She almost gets it - NOT!.......2001-12-11

Too bad I couldn't rate this 0 stars because 1 star in one too many. This book is essentially and "hey, look at me and the people I know and the circles I have access to." She misses the whole meaning of Proust. She and everything she stands for is what he mocks.

Not all is lost because this book (if one can call it that) gives me hope that I can get a book published one of these days

2 out of 5 stars A sad disappointment from the author of Parallel Lives.......2001-06-23

After a promising opening chapter, this book proved to be a great disappointment, especially after Parallel Lives -- lots of Proustian detail but to very little point. It's confessional in tone (particularly with reference to the circumstances surrounding her second marriage) but without the insight necessary to make the confession of much interest to anyone else -- as a result, parts of it read like a literary gossip column. Also, as earlier reviewers noted, sloppy spelling and grammatical errors (in my edition anyway) are annoying. I found two points particularly grating -- her comparison of the emergence of the Beatles to the Passion of Christ (both are "transcendent") and her habit of referring to her literary pals as Annie D. and Bob S. It's apparent who they are from the text so why the coy references? It does seem as if this good writer has run out of steam -- I wish this book had really been about reading Proust. I think I would have enjoyed Rose on that subject.

From the supplier: "Remembrance of Things Past," the book by Marcel Proust, is a masterwork. Proust writes in an elegant language. He has a particular genius for perceiving the character of people and the mechanisms of society. He challenges the reader to improve not only one's education but also, in the experience of reading, one's life.
