I purchased this book for my son, Farmall Freak. It was everything he expected and more. A great history/reference book, especially now that he has begun restoration on his own Farmalls. A simplifying perspective of IPM's in Convex Optimization.......2001-11-09

At last, we find a book which develops a thorough understanding
of the most general theory of interior point methods for
convex optimization, and is easily accessible. As the author
himself remarks "Much of the literature on the general
theory of interior point methods is difficult to understand,
even for specialists. My hope is that this book will make
the most general theory accessible to a wide audience -
especially Ph.D. students, the next generation of optimizers".
The book covers basic interior point theory including
the theory of self concordant functionals. There is a chapter
on conic programming covering the relationship between interior point
methods and duality theory, and the development
of primal dual interior point algorithms for solving conic
optimization problems (Conic programming includes linear,
semidefinite and second order cone programming as special
cases!).

One can then "perhaps" take on Nesterov and Nemirovskii's
seminal treatise on Interior Point Polynomial Algorithms
in Convex Programming, one of the most widely cited references
in optimization, which I must confess is not exactly
an easy read.

To summarize, conic optimization and efficient interior point
methods to solve them are certainly one of the most exciting
areas in optimization recently, and Renegar's excellent,
intuitive and short book is a welcome addition to the
bookshelf of any serious optimizer!. Strongly recommended!

3 Amigos.......2007-07-04

Curtis M."Butch" Ashton was my uncle. Youngest of four bothers on my fathers side. Before joining the Navy he lived with us. It was like having an instant big bother that I idolized. I was just a small boy when he went off to Vietnam not yet really old enough to understand the dangers of war until that night in Dec. 1969 when my mother told me Butch was dead. Butch's metals and burial flag are proudly on display in my home today. I have two teenage sons of my own now and we all enjoyed reading/sharing "Good To Go".

Thank you Harry for sharing with us a part of his life with you and the Seals in Vietnam.

What a Journey.......2007-06-09

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, fast paced read. It is an incredible story that races through a 20 year Navy career but is able to keep it's main focus on the Vietnam tours. Very exciting and very well written. Mr. Constance deserves his medals.

Liar or merely a poor writer?.......2007-03-06

I had high hopes for this book, having enjoyed Marcinko's various highly entertaining forays (most, after "Rogue Warrior" clearly labeled as "fiction") and "Patches" Watson's book, but I had misgivings about this from page one. Evidently, Harry's neighbor (the "as told to") was fascinated with Constance's war stories (and, really, who wouldn't be?), interviewed him and changed the tall tales to the first-person perspective. I found the technique clunky and obvious whenever the "real" writer's voice conflicted with the tales of derring-do (e.g., misidentifying the M-203 grenade launcher, calling it a ".two-oh-three, as though that was the launcher's caliber, or something, clearly shows the writer slavishly scribbling down as much of the stories as he could and doing little fact checking).

Now let's face it, anybody who had the balls to not only volunteer for membership in an elite group and who survived multiple tours in Vietnam is worthy of respect, but I actually wasn't terribly surprised to see that Constance's many accusation leveled at SEAL teammate Charlie Watson were untrue and he was forced to apologize in court (and pay nearly half a million dollars in damages). Much of the tone of the book seems to come from a sour-grapes guy with some scores to settle against former friends, colleagues and lovers. It's a shame that the obvious fraud and mean-spirited tone here taints the real-life Vietnam SEAL team heroics.

A very interesting read........2007-02-02

My cousin, Curtis Morris Ashton, "Butch" is what family called him or "Lil" Ashton is what the team called him, was deployed with SEAL team 7 and then 2. Although I never was able to meet him, because we lived in Arizona and his side of the family in Texas, it allowed me to get a glimpse of who he was and some of his personality. The Life and Times of a Decorated Member of The US Navy's Elite Seal Team Two.......2006-03-04

In Good to Go by Harry Constance and Randall Fuerst, the authors give first hand insight on the life of a military man. Good to Go follows Harry as he goes through many trials and tribulations. From a cheating wife to threats of losing all his military rank, he must try to salvage his name and save his pride.
The authors do an excellent job of making the events seem real almost as if we can feel the disappointment or disbelief. Although the book uses a lot of military slang, it is still a very easy read. I would recommend Good to Go to anyone, it's not just another war novel; it's more.

In 1953, when he was a robust 14-year-old, Charles L. Mee was stricken with viral polio. This memoir describes his struggle with polio, and also comments on the treatments (sometimes horrific) that were tried to beat this virus that, in 1953 alone, struck over 50,000 people. His struggle was not an easy one, and his later life wasn't either, but he comes to terms with his limitations, becoming a successful historian and playright. It's a real eye-opener, and he doesn't mince words, which makes for a compelling read.

The Definitive Source.......2006-05-21

For those interested in understanding the impact of polio, this is the definitive source. No one tells the story like Charles Mee. The depth of his insights are stunning. He makes a powerful comment on the human condition. This book is a MUST READ.

Good polio retrospective.......2006-03-23

From long experience with this area, Mee's accounts both of the era of his youth and the experiences of polio ring very true from the pen of an accomplished writer. One senses that Mee never really made peace with his disability and its impact, inasmuch as he was able to evade, compensate, head into intellectual endeavors, etc., so there are many polio/disability issues not well dealt with here. (Significantly it ends with his finding an oasis in the intellectual world of the Ivy League and the intellect.) However, one has to suspect that the decision to tell the story, with insight and honesty, may represent at long last a step in addressing what he may have hoped at one time to simply "leave behind." Perhaps there will be a sequel in which his historical training and writing skills are again focused on the complex interrelationships between disability, psyche and society. This is a good read, though, even if it is not the full story.

Five stars are not enough..........2003-07-10

I don't write many reviews anymore, who has time? However, this book stood out so much above the rest I've read lately that I just had to share. The book is about a polio survivor, the 50's, the discovery of the vaccine and oh so much more. It's about living the life you were handed, not the want you thought you were going to get.

His epilogue is pure poetry. An example: "Life continues to change. New things surface; old wounds hidden by bigger wounds show up when the bigger wounds are healed; new clusters of misgivings and confusion take shape to replace old clusters of exhausted adjustments. New things come along to be accepted with grace and peace. The disability and its challenges continue to evolve, and one must achieve acceptance and grace and peace again and again, day after day."

I highly recommend this book to everyone. I read about 5 books a week and this book is in my top 20 of all time.
