This book is one of a series on New Perspectives in Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change. The series is designed to showcase current theory and practice in human resources and organizational development. While there are practitioners on the editorial board, this looks like more of an academic series. I'd describe this publication as one for professionals, but a volume that individuals can benefit from, as well.

The focus of this book is passionate work. This concept will be difficult for many readers, since passion is emotion and emotion and work are usually considered incongruent. The authors point out, early in the book, that "Passion is at the root of creative genius, personal transformation, and notable events. Passion is emotional energy; it stimulates life and energizes individuals to work toward goals. ...New products, new ideas, creative ways to deliver services, inventions, an scientific discoveries are produced because someone or some organization is passionate." OK. Passion seems to be consistent with what we're striving to accomplish in employment organizations today.

How might we approach this? The authors explain that they've done some research that connects learning with passion. Put the concepts together and you get meaningfulness, and there are a lot of people looking for opportunities to feel a greater sense of meaning in what they do. Readers will be guided through an interesting study into passion, what it is, how it fits, and what to do with it. Individuals will gain, but trainers and organizational development professionals will find it most thought-provoking and stimulating.

The book is organized into eight chapters: Introduction to Passion and Work, The Foundations of Passionate Work, Passion Transformation Process and Cycle, Occupational Intimacy, The Discovering Process, The Designing Process, The Developing Process, and Transforming Work---the five keys to achieving trust, commitment, and passion in the workplace. An index will help you find your way back to those things you want to work with again. A number of exercises are included to stimulate your thinking and help you gain some sense of measurement in the emergence of passion in your personal and corporate life.

The book may seem a bit pricey for only a couple hundred pages, but there is a lot packed into those pages. The book is set mostly in 11 point type, so find a nice quiet place with good light to absorb all the authors have to share.

They say work is the hardest way to earn money. Michael Kroth and Patricia Boverie have zeroed in what we need to easy up the hard. "Transforming Work" for me hit the core of what is needed in all aspects of life --passion. This is not just a business book, I found myself connecting the dots with the rest of my life. While TW is a bit pricy try, living a life with unconnected dots.

Don't waste even the $4 for this pamphlet unless you are a complete idiot. Let's see - the best way to deal with clay soil is to cover it with over a foot of good quality top soil (at major expense). Gee - I never would have thought of that! I'm surprised that moving to an area with better soil wasn't a suggestion as well.

This small, easy to read pamphlet lays out the exact how to's and what not to do working with clay soil. Clay soil can be so frustrating to work with but with the help of this book I feel that I can be much more successful in improving my soil thereby enjoying greater success in my gardening.

Weak on rigor & physical insight = bad book.......2006-01-18

Strengths:
- Fairly complete coverage of the various properties of special functions. The introduction of these subjects is not good, but one could use it as a refrence for formulas.

Weaknesses:
- Topic selection and rigor are weak. Many important areas of mathematical physics are skipped over, or short changed. For example, the section on tensors is far too short. In addition, everything is introduced in index notation instead of coordinate free form. Also, the group theory section is very weak (not to mention short). The rotation group and lorentz group are discussed briefly, but there is no systematic introduction to lie groups or other important topics.
- The book seems to focus on special functions, and solving differential equations. However, it does not introduce hilbert spaces well, and therefore the presentation seems like a bewildering array of bessel this and fourier that, without anything to tie it all together.

Overall, I'd say the book sacrifices depth by covering too many topics. If you want to really succeed you're going to need a full course each on linear (& some multilnear) algebra, mutlivariable calc & vector analysis, differential equations, complex analysis, differential geometry and group theory. If you want a condensed version, get byron and fuller. It's written systematically, and strikes (in my opinion) a perfect balance between rigor and pragmatism.

Won't teach you much.......2005-04-08

This book, like others have said, is a good book to go to if you need to look something up quickly, but is not something to learn from. We use this book in an undergrad math methods course in the physics department. Luckily i major in math, and know the topics we are covering, otherwise, this book would be useless.

Great undergrad physics major book!.......2005-03-23

This undergraduate text makes Arfken really accessible. The new examples are great and most are from various fields of physics. This has helped me in my mechanics, E and M, and quantum mechanics classes. The long index is complete and really helps to find things quickly. The chapter on probability & statistics explains concepts especially well.

Better Overview then Book.......2005-02-17

This book is much better as a reference book for someone who already understands the material then for a student just learning. The book covers everything from Coordinate Systems to Calculus of Variantions, PDQ's, and Special Unitary Groups in highly dense sections, with little or no examples.

The problems are extraordinarly tough, and they seem disjointed, lacking any real focus and coherence, exp. towards the front of the book. Once you get past the physics in the first part, and into the math section of the book, it slows down, and really explains ideas, as well as providing excellent problems to work.

I would recommend this book as a reference, but there are better books out there. For reference, I would also recommend Schaums Outlines; and for a text book, I would recommend David Hilbert's Mathematical Methods Vol I, and Vol II.

Better as a reference.......2005-01-26

I used this book for an undergraduate math methods for physicists course. While in the class I found it very difficult to learn anything from it, as it is rather dense. I found that most websites I looked to for help cited the book though. Now I find this book to be a very useful reference. It's definitions are fairly concise and topics are not spread throughout the book. Bottom line: great reference, poor learning tool.

Dual perspective of heart disease -unique lessons and advice.......1999-06-10

This book provides the rare opportunity to read about both sides of the stethoscope. Dr. Tenney, as a cardiologist, shares his own enlightenment from the surprise of having a heart attack. Best stated in his own words in his chapter on Denial, "...I needed and longed for an explanation of my lab results, and my blood pressure. Like anyone else, I was no longer a doctor, just another middle-aged individual lying on the emergency room table experiencing a heart attack."

He states his objective in chapter 17, "What have I done in the past 26 months that produced a normal electrocardiogram?". His book details his answer, and this answer is important to everyone with a tendency towards heart disease.

His book climaxes, as it should, with a chapter title Recommendations where he states emphatically, "Be aware that health is foremost a personal responsibility, not the physician's or the medical system's." Dr. Tenney wants the patient to be empowered; to be in charge; to be attuned to life's signals.

Dr. Tenney confirms what I and all the patients in my Cardiac Rehab program have learned: a cardiac event is a gift, and each survivor's life is permanently changed by such an event, and those who do as Dr. Tenney has done, live longer, healthier, and richer lives.

"Not worth your time or money".......1999-04-23

Presumably, this book, written by a cardiologist who suffered a heart attack,should enlighten the layman with a dual perspective, doctor and patient simultaneously. It does not.

By virtue of his profession, Dr. Tenney knew what cards were to be dealt him in diagnosis and treament of his myocardial infarction. The rest of us have no such luxury. We are surprised and frightened at each step of the healing process. I had hoped this cardiologist would express enlightenment, "So this is what it's like being a patient!" He does not. Sadly, the book results in a kind of confessional,how he denied his own heart attack, how he had not followed standard medical advice about prevention, and so on. The book sheds no new light on heart disease, treatment, or recovery. In his chapter titled "Empathy", he claims he now has empathy with his patients, yet gives no examples of such. In fact, throughout the book, he mentions no patient other than himself, the text heavily populated with the pronoun "I", or "my heart attack" and "my feelings."

No doubt Dr. Tenney felt better after writing this confessional, but your money is better spent on other popular books about heart disease. It merits a single star.
