Scientists have statistics for how much food plants grow in what environment over time. They have experimental results for what and how much plants grow in what environment. So we know it used to be growing population went along with growing more garden and field crops, by clearing more land. Since the mid-20th century it goes along with making each plant grow more. In the 21st century it goes along with making lots of breeding decisions. For plants face warmer, unhealthy environments of too much carbon dioxide and ozone in the air and salt in the soil.

More carbon dioxide and ozone in the air; saltier soil; and warmer temperatures aren't the only stresses making our world unhealthy. These four are well studied. The problem is experiments and research look at stresses one by one. But in the real world stresses work together to strain our world. So we need paper trails on what happens when stresses gang up together.

Plants have ways of dealing with worldwide stresses. Some are choosing to put more growth into some parts over others; letting all parts grow, but in changed ways such as changed numbers of leaves; and using stress-busters such as antioxidants and polyamines against ozone and salt damage, and heat shock proteins and membranes against high temperatures. One problem is they generally handle more carbon dioxide better than they do greater ozone, saltiness and warmth. The other is plants strong on stress-busters tend to be small, slow-growers that put out less and smaller fruits and tubers.

Scientists also have ways of dealing with stressed plant environments. Some are breeding, developing cultivars, and genetic engineering. They're using these ways to get faster, greater harvests from garden and field crops. They're also trying to grow garden vegetables and field crops in more climates and places. The problem is breeders favor fast-growing big harvesters over stress-busters. That might change. For drought, as one of many stresses, is a real concern in the face of worldwide fresh water shortages. Also, growers grow particular garden and field crops, to make money and support families. So there's a place for irrigation, which salts soils, and for chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides/pesticides. That's what happens when growers don't match soils with crops, when they change soils to fit crops.

The book begins with a helpful preface and set of abbreviations. It ends with an appendix list of plants; an appendix comment on main field and vegetable crops of the United States; a complete, up-to-date set of references; and a good index. In between, Seth G Pritchard and Jeffrey S Amthor organize the ten chapters well, with convincing examples, facts and figures. It's fortunate for readers CROPS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE is so well organized. For the writing is clear, but technical throughout.

It is not that I didn't like this book, as I always find tidbits of information in most books I read. As far as NLP books go, this one swims through some fresh ideas though never reaching shore. It is suppose to cover how to model what works in business, though I doubt I could model one after reading this book with out getting lots of additional information elsewhere

Stating the obvious.......2001-06-25

This book focuses only on identifying the visual, auditory and kinaethetic (VAK) representational systems and applying them to communication, learning and training. The author admits in the Preface, "Many trainers may read this book and believe that, in my discussions of the various training aids, I am stating the obvious. To a certain extent, that is true." (p.xii) I'm afraid this is too true. Sally's effort to give more detailed discussions only insults the intelligence of trainers. Do not be misled by the title of the book, thinking that you'll get much help "through NLP". The scope is very limited and the content much too basic.

Real Life Story Hits Home.......2002-10-30

This is a chronicle of the early years of WW2 as experienced by a Polish teenager. His arrest, torture and deportation to Siberia is followed by another major adventure in trying to reach the Polish Army in Uzbekistan.
Aleksander Topolski's detailed, thorough descriptions of the people he encountered, the places he passed through and the experiences he endured bring this account alive.
Personally, this book has allowed me to gain a tremendous insight into the experiences of my own father whose story is mirrored by this one.
A highly recommended read for anyone interested in learning about the unbelievable Soviet regime of days gone by.

Gripping Read.......2002-02-14

From the first paragraph I was engrossed in the book and transported to another world. Similar in some ways to Angela's Ashes this book added the extra complexity of depicting the complexity of politics and war. The attention to detail and memory are phenomenal. I highly recommend this book.

a worthwhile read.......2001-02-06

As an American interested in Russian affairs, and speaking little Russian- good books are hard to come by. Either translated from Russian, or written by Americans who don't really know what they are talking about- I have yet to read a book that really piqued my interest. Until this one. This book has a many things working well for it- it is written in english by someone who was THERE, it flows smoothly from chapter to chapter,and above all it is interesting. It is sad how little many Americans know about the gigantic country that we have fought for and against throughout history. Russia is amazing, and this book conveys that quite well.

Although this book is primarily about cancer and cancer recovery, Ms. Wanslee's memoirs transcend illness -- this book is a triumph of the human spirit. I would compare it to William Styron's "Darkness Visible," his memoirs of depression so deep it nearly killed him. In this book, Ms. Wanslee's love and spirit glow on each page -- her voice is strong and deep and her compassion for others who are ill is simply overwhelming. It is a must for anyone with cancer or with any other serious disease. And it is a must for their families and, friends -- and anyone who cares and loves others in this world. I think this is an instant classic -- a memoir so pure and clear it deserves a special place in the heart -- It echoes with laughter, sadness, tragedy, deep spirituality, joy and every human emotion in between.
