Book Description
In the last few years, interest in the scythe has grown remarkably; and so have the sales of The Scythe Book. Now Peter Vido, who has written two outstanding articles for Small Farmer's Journal on the use of the scythe, has contributed an addendum for this book on the practical use of the scythe based on his own extensive research and experience.
Customer Reviews:
more historical reference than how to manual.......2007-07-09
First, this book is primarily about the European scythe, not the American scythe. The author mentions the American scythe very briefly before dimissing it as too heavy to use and an inferior tool. I haven't used a European scythe, and perhaps I would find it easier to use if I tried it, but I do have a couple of beautiful antique American scythes that I picked up at a farm auction and they work just fine. I was disappointed with the author's dismissal of the tool.
What the book does have is a very in depth description of the history of the scythe, including a discussion of early short handled sickles, the steps involved in crafting a scythe, harvesting techniques and quotes about harvesting from a wide variety of literary sources. After reading this book, I'm thinking about hunting down a copy of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina just to read the sections on harvesting.
I was hoping for a little more "how to" info, but I think perhaps that is best obtained from an experienced user who can not only show you how to do it but critique what you're doing as you do it. The basics are here to get you started, and the author's passion for hand tools is obvious. Keep your blades sharp and your back strong and you'll be surprised what you can accomplish.
Better than nothing.......2001-08-04
In that this seems to be the only available book on scythes you could say it is the best book on scythes. The author drifts into New Age gibberish twice but then only for a moment. The rest of the info seems to be good; and this is certainly a great beginer's book. My complaint is that it does not go beyond a beginer's book. The book will help you get started, but if you buy a scythe you really should find some old hand at scythes to further your education.
A masters notes........2001-06-25
The second edition of The Scythe Book was released this June and I am posting this before Amazon lists it as available, but I hope that will soon change.
The original text by Dave Tresemer has not been re-edited. It is still a good introduction to this wonderful tool. The core of the new edition is the addendum by Peter Vido. Peter is extraordinarily dedicated to the scythe as both a practical tool and as a model of wisely applied human engineering. Peter shows us how complex and subtle this simple tool can be. The depth of his knowledge may overwhelm the uninitiated on first reading, but as your experience grows with this tool, Peter's commentary becomes increasingly valuable. There is a lot of important information packed into this addendum and any scythe enthusiast will learn much from this master.
The European scythe accomplishes more than the mundane job of cutting grass. It offers us an opportunity to step away from the craziness of American lawn culture. It gives us the space in which to breathe, listen and explore our own rhythms without burning gasoline. This book is the place to begin.
A great book about a traditional hand tool.......1999-12-20
This book covers the history, the care and the operation of an ancient farming tool--the scythe. It offers a fascinating history such as answering the question of how an acre came to be a unit of area. You will want to use a scythe after reading this book!

Ethics is innate in a conscious unitive Universe.......2001-06-22
The Cosmic Dance: Science Discovers the Mysterious Harmony of the Universe by Giuseppe Del Re, Foreword by Thomas F. Torrance (Templeton Foundation) focuses on a new worldview, emerging from the science of the last decades of the second millennium. Its metaphor is the cosmic dance, or the harmony existing between systems that are so strongly interdependent that they behave as a single entity. This dance image hints at a general, evolving pattern in which all objects in the universe participate-like the ordered chaos of an African open-air market. Some of the chapters discuss the nature of processes in the universe, including chaos and chance in the game of life. The reconciliation of variety and unity are addressed in reference to the space-time continuum and the unified field of relativity theory. Del Re continues the investigation into an exploration of the origins of freedom and ethics, suggesting that science indicates that the human species may have a specific task in the universe: building a bridge between matter and spirit. Del Re ponders alchemy, the significance of symbols, and the meaning of the soul. Woven throughout a variety of esoteric and scientific inquiries is the underlying sense of the unifying principles of science and a spiritual outlook. The questions raised are issues that will be discussed by an emerging network of scientists and spiritual seekers, and this book will add a valued and informed perspective to these conversations. The Cosmic Dance is a playful book that takes a broad view of the subject of science and religious aspiration. Del Re wants us to keep an open and playful imagination about how we think and experiment with the universe. The book may please some who are naturally inclined to an esoteric science and irritate material reductionists if there are really very many of them left. If there are this book is to braod in its humanistic reach to engage them to reconsider their entrenchment. For the rest of us The Cosmic Dance is a pleasure to read. "This book is intended to take you on a voyage through the main ideas and discoveries of contemporary science, from physics to biology; a voyage aimed at finding out how the wonders the scientists have discovered can contribute to a wholesome personal outlook on life and the universe. "The times are over when our voyage would have been a royal visit to the empire which human ingenuity has conquered for our welfare and pleasure; it will be a humble and patient search for the meaning of the greatest concepts of science in the context of poetry, history, and philosophy. We shall be guided in our exploration by an ancient, recently revived idea: that all there is participates as if it were in a great harmonious Dance." from the preface.
Examines the place of man in the scheme of things.......2001-04-29
The Cosmic Dance: Science Discovers The Mysterious Harmony Of The Universe explores how the image and metaphor of dancing helps us come to terms with evolution, randomness, irreversibility, and the emergence of new information -- including the conception of the universe as a complex system made up of complex systems. From atoms to planets, solar systems to galaxies, and the choreographed evolution of ecosystems and human beings, The Cosmic Dance views such phenomena as interacting wholes, and apparently chaotic systems can work well. Author Guiseppe Del Re examines the nature of complexity, order, and organization while referencing scientists, philosophers, and literature. The Cosmic Dance examines the place of man in the scheme of things, including human ethics, morals, mind, soul, and psyche. A fascinating, informative, and at times inspiring blend of philosophy and science, The Cosmic Dance engages both the mind and the imagination that will be read with deep interest by scholarship and the non-specialist general reader alike.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing and Witty.......2001-06-07
Cundari has done a great job of pooling together the great minds in this field and arranging a masterpiece of computational techniques in the organometallic arena. The book is both concise and yet comprehensive, detailed and yet brief, startling and yet strangely comforting. Buy it, read it, and enjoy it. More importantly, use it.

Book Description
This book presents some facts and methods of Mathematical Control Theory treated from the geometric viewpoint. It is devoted to finite-dimensional deterministic control systems governed by smooth ordinary differential equations. The problems of controllability, state and feedback equivalence, and optimal control are studied.
Some of the topics treated by the authors are covered in monographic or textbook literature for the first time while others are presented in a more general and flexible setting than elsewhere.
Although being fundamentally written for mathematicians, the authors make an attempt to reach both the practitioner and the theoretician by blending the theory with applications. They maintain a good balance between the mathematical integrity of the text and the conceptual simplicity that might be required by engineers. It can be used as a text for graduate courses and will become most valuable as a reference work for graduate students and researchers.
Book Description
At age twenty-two, General Henry Lee commanded the elite Lee's Legion and earned an enviable record: capturing the fort at Paulus Hook; distinguishing himself in the battles at Haw River, Guilford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs, and others; and helping in the siege of Yorktown. But by 1809 Lee's fortunes had tragically altered: He wrote these memoirs while jailed in a debtor's prison. Originally published in 1812 in two volumes as Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States, this third 1869 edition includes Robert E. Lee's biographical essay on his father, the only substantial piece of writing by the celebrated Confederate general. From Grant and Sherman to Eisenhower and De Gaulle, classic military accounts have emerged from the carnage of nearly every war; Lee's Memoirs are unique in that they are unrivaled in the history of the American Revolution.
Customer Reviews:
Stirring, Thrilling, You Are There.......2000-08-18
Anyone with a sobriquet of "Lighthorse Harry" sets up some expectations with his memoirs, but this book delivers on them. Not only does the book take you into the thick of battle in the Revolutionary War's "Southern Campaign", it also takes you to deliberations about how the Colonists reacted to British Rule and what kind of government America should have and how it should solve practical issues of the day. Henry Lee was there for all of it as one of the "Lees of Virginia". This book has a zest and pacing that gently draws the reader in for the next installment.
a "must" for the student of the Revolution in the South.......1998-05-13
Lee's work is well written and, in some cases, provides the only description of the legion of battles and skirmishes that characterized the Southern Campaign. The reader needs to keep in mind that Lee wrote in the 18th century tradition of exagerating one's own triumphs and glossing over any shortcomings. Lee likewise writes in a seemingly authoritative manner about events where he wasn't present. For example his condemnation of the NC militia at the battle of Guilford CH has influenced most subsequent accounts although Lee wasn't aware that their orders allowed them to leave the field after delivering up two rounds. In contrast he fails to mention the flight of the Virginia militia in the right wing. Given these faults, Lee's work is still the best of it's kind. Any Rev War library should have a copy.

Book Description
Told from the viewpoint of young Kathleen, a recovering consumption victim, this detailed look at life in the early 1800s follows Dr. John Hutchison as he deals with emergencies and makes his rounds. Kathleen witnesses patients being bled, visits a family plagued by malaria, attends the birth of a baby -- and begins to dream of becoming a doctor herself. Through Kathleen's eyes, readers learn how important doctors were in those days, delivering mail and goods and serving as midwives, diplomats, and friends, in addition to performing their medical duties. When Dr. Hutchison announces that he will have to leave the community because the town has no house large enough to accommodate his growing family, the townspeople take dramatic measures to retain him. Based on the life of author Ainslie Manson's great-grandfather, House Calls includes fascinating sidebars on such topics as common ailments, medicinal plants, and the contents of a doctor's bag in the early 19th century.
