Book Description
Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the basics of soil chemistry
Although only a meter in depth over the earth's surface, soil is key to sustaining life-affecting air and water quality, the growth of plants and crops, and the health of the entire planet. The complex interplay among organic and inorganic solids, air, water, microorganisms, and plant roots in soil is the subject of Soil
Chemistry, a reference pivotal to understanding soil processes and problems.
Thoroughly reorganized for ease of use, this updated Third Edition of
Soil Chemistry summarizes the important research and fundamental knowledge in the field in a single, readily usable text, including:
- Soil-ion interactions
- Biogeological cycles and pollution
- Water and soil solutions
- Oxidation and reduction
- Inorganic solid phase and organic matter in soil
- Weathering and soil development
- Cation retention (exchange)
- Anion and molecular retention
- Acid and salt-affected soils
New to the Third Edition is an enhanced emphasis on soil solution chemistry and expanded coverage of phosphate chemistry and the chemical principles of the aqueous phase. At the same time, the book has retained the clear examination of the fundamentals of the science of soil that has distinguished earlier editions. Complete with SI units and end-of-chapter study questions, Soil Chemistry is an excellent introductory resource for students studying this crucial topic.
Customer Reviews:
Short and simple.......2007-03-09
This one of the best books available for understanding the basics of soil chemistry. IF you are a novice or having to take a course go for it because it covers most of the aspect of soil chemistry in a very simple language.
One drawback I could think of is that there are no example problems in any chapter, though the exercises ask you some challenging problems to solve.

Customer Reviews:
Good Scientific Manual.......2005-01-19
Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Water, Waste Water, and Soil is a very informative. It starts out speaking about laboratory safety because this book talks about using chemicals and other substances that can be quite harmful. This was definitely one of the finer points of the book starting first and foremost with ways to avoid injury in the laboratory. Next the book goes into explaining how imperative quality control of the results of your laboratory work is. It explains that nothing is more important that the purity and accuracy of your results. The manual then goes into how to organize and catalogue your samples as to not get them confused with one another. In the next section the manual talks about how to take field measurements and how to properly and accurately record your results. It covers the entire test from ph, to calcium carbonate aggression. The last 2 sections go into how to take more detailed and accurate measurements back in the lab to the interpretation of all of the results that you come up with.
While this book uses great detail in explaining the subject on what it was written, as for any ability to hold my interest is where this was lacking. This manual was very dry it obviously was not written to be interesting or anything of that nature, But in all seriousness this was possibly one of the most boring books I have written. The language that was used in the manual was very technical and if you do not know the terminology then it is easy to get confused and lost. Plus this language adds to the boredom because of the frustration that comes with trying to understand the highly scientific terms. But for the purpose that this novel was written for it is perfectly written using precise detail and covering all of the bases and answering all of the questions that may arise in the course of testing water samples. I recommend this book for those who are interested in entering the field of water examination it is a excellent book for those who are looking to get there feet wet in this field. But if you are in search of a page-turner something to hold your attention or just a good read I suggest that you steer far away from this book it is not one that would hold any ones attention for any long stretch of time.
A very good handbook.......2000-10-27
This manual offers a very good basis not only for experts of water chemistry, water and waste water treatment and environmental protection but also for teachers and students of technical directions at colleges as well as at universities.
225 pages contain all factors playing an important role for examination of water, waste water and soil. 9 chapters include general remarks to laboratory safety (also regarding to waste treatment) and quality control. Furthermore requirements for analytical methods of the different water types and soil are mentioned. Further chapters deal with the preparation and technique of the sampling as well as their application in practice.
Chapter "Laboratory Measurements" describes all important methods in detail. So this book is a perfect handbook for the target group, even without using the attached extensive reference list.
In chapter 7 a huge variety of tables containing especially German legal and technical regulations is an clearly help for interpretation of received results.
This book can be highly recommended as a handbook for everybody dealing with water, waste water and soil treatment.

Book Description
Mathematical Explorations with MATLAB examines the mathematics most frequently encountered in first-year university courses. A key feature of the book is its use of MATLAB, a popular and powerful software package. The book's emphasis is on understanding and investigating the mathematics by putting the mathematical tools into practice in a wide variety of modeling situations. Even readers who have no prior experience with MATLAB will gain fluency. The book covers a wide range of material: matrices, whole numbers, complex numbers, geometry of curves and families of lines, data analysis, random numbers and simulations, and differential equations from the basic mathematics. These lessons are applied to a rich variety of investigations and modeling problems, from sequences of real numbers to cafeteria queues, from card shuffling to models of fish growth. All extras to the standard MATLAB package are supplied on the World Wide Web.
Download Description
Preconditioning techniques have emerged as an essential part of successful and efficient iterative solutions of matrices. Ke Chen's book offers a comprehensive introduction to these methods. A vast range of explicit and implicit sparse preconditioners are covered, including the conjugate gradient, multi-level and fast multi-pole methods, matrix and operator splitting, fast Fourier and wavelet transforms, incomplete LU and domain decomposition, Schur complements and approximate inverses. In addition, aspects of parallel realization using the MPI are discussed. Very much a users-guide, the book provides insight to the use of these techniques in areas such as acoustic wave scattering, image restoration and bifurcation problems in electrical power stations. Supporting MATLAB files are available from the Web to support and develop readers' understanding, and provide stimulus for further study. Pitched at graduate level, the book is intended to serve as a useful guide and reference for students, computational practitioners, engineers and researchers alike.

Book Description
A member of the Class of 1936 (known as "the runt class" because it was a smallest class ever to matriculate due to the Depression) recounts life at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. From plebe summer to hazing, from academics and athletics to socializing, and June week to graduation, 1600 Men captures the essence of life at the Academy in the 30s--the demands and seriousness as well as the pleasures and the humor. Sleight recalls the introduction of the Springfield rifle, the way he and the other plebes fumbled with marking the brindle "white works" uniforms, the cunning of duty officers, the summer cruises, and the constant drilling that was part of the self-contained world of the Naval Academy. Experience one of the military's finest traditions along with Sleight and the others as they struggle and sail through those years of transition.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful personal reminiscences of the old Annapolis.......2006-11-15
I was one of thousands of students who passed through Iolani School in Honolulu during Robert Sleight's years as a history teacher there, and though we all knew him as the crusty "Captain Sleight" who had a penchant for firing off a small toy cannon in the middle of tense exam sessions, I don't think any of us really knew a whole lot about the man behind the legend, so to speak. At least, I certainly didn't.
I really regret that now, having read Capt. Sleight's Naval Academy memoirs "1600 Men" (that's how the title is rendered on the cover and spine; inside it's spelled out: "Sixteen Hundred Men"). He was clearly a man with many good stories to tell -- and also a tremendous skill in telling them.
I've read a lot of memoirs, novels, and nonfiction works about the various service academies in the last few years, and feel reasonably qualified to pronounce Bob Sleight's book one of the best. It's strongly personal, of course, but not so self-absorbed that the reader doesn't come away with an excellent portrayal of the USNA in the 1930s. That reader will get the sense of a time in the Academy's history that is long passed, yet the narrative never feels dated. The events he describes are as fresh to the reader as they clearly are in the author's memory, as are the insults and indignities of academy life. The writing is affectionate but not sentimental, blunt but not crass. "1600 Men" is a great primary resource for anyone interested in the pre-war Academy, but also a wonderful and entertaining way to remember a man (dare I say "a hero"?) who -- as many of my fellow alumni would no doubt agree -- deserves to be remembered as fully as possible.

Thin picture of people seeking to be significant.......2001-06-07
While I agree with Steffanie Gibbons' view that the Waters' memoir is well-written, in that it flows with the pen of an accomplished writer, but I cannot not agree with a rating of five stars. The "intimate" picture portrayed gives a thin image of his artist friends. Moreover this picture is one of, somewhat desperate, people seeking to be significant as artists, but coming off more like hangers-on. After reading the book, Taos has lost much of the well manicured luster as an artist center, and comes off more like a tourist trap.
Intimate glimpses.......2000-06-23
In this well-written memoir, Frank Waters shares intimate details of his friendships with many of the artists who lived in Taos, New Mexico during the Mabel Dodge Luhan era. A pulitzer prize-winning author, Waters uses his talent with the pen to acquaint the reader with his artist friends in Taos and tell his own life story. Waters also shares his exploration of the history of Native Americans in the Four Corners area. If anyone is qualified to write about the art world in Taos at that time, it is certainly Frank Waters. A must-read for those interested in the Southwest.

Book Description
Author Charles E. Willingham always said he would achieve millionaire status before he turns sixty years old. At the age of fifty-nine-one day before his sixtieth birthday-Willingham achieves his lofty goal. But it was a long, hard road.
Born in 1939, Willingham grows up in Texas picking cotton, feeding chickens, and graduating at the bottom of his high school class. But he soon catapults to the big time, becoming a U.S. Air Force Cold War spy, nearly getting shot down by Russian MIGs, and landing in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the building of the Berlin Wall.
After the Cold War, Willingham creates hardware at Cal-Tech to measure the cosmic microwave fields emitted from the theoretical Big Bang, and then helps develop the country's first weather satellites at Ford Aerospace. But it is when he enters the relatively new field of computer technology that he eventually makes his fortune working for computer software magnate Bill Gates.
With a host of laugh-out-loud escapades, In My Time is a classic rags-to-riches story and a vivid chronicle of one man's life in the twentieth century. A rollicking rollercoaster ride around the world and back, it is also a tale of Willingham's rugged individualism and hard-earned wisdom.

This collection of individual memories of children growing up is filled with the hilarity of youthful ignorance played out in a time over fifty years ago, in a place that had its own unique differences, its own way of doing things. We can bring back the past and we can even profit from it.
Customer Reviews:
Time Has Made a Change in All of Us.......2000-05-27
A look at both growing up and getting old. Growing up inAlabama with a message for everyone. Humor, tragedy, the dramatic andthe mundane. In short, the shape of life.
A book for everyone --fantastic reading........2000-05-13
This book takes you back in time when it was the type of world we love to remember. It's a sentamental journey in time to a place that was special to all those who grew up there. It warms the heart with each page. I enjoyed the nostalgic stroll down the byways of a wonderful small Alabama town.
History at its best by those who lived it.......2000-05-08
Robert David Ward brought together a diverse mix of people whose lives were linked by time and place, revealing both the uniqueness of this small southern college town and a common culture familiar to those who remember World War II, danced to the music of a young Frank Sinatra and big bands, and listened to The Lone Ranger on the radio. It was a time when children created their own entertainment and adventure, limited only by imagination and invention. Although the setting was unique to those who lived it, many of the experiences brought me back to my own childhood in a small southern town. Their stories pulled me right into their lives as they shared the experiences that shaped their futures. I felt as if Montevallo was my town and its young people were my best friends. Not since I read the stories of Rebeccah Wells and Pat Conroy have I felt such a kindred spirit with the lives of those portrayed in TIME HAS MADE A CHANGE IN ME.
The broad mix of voices who shared their recollections and images convey a history more authentic than any history book of deadly dull facts and dates. This book will make a perfect gift for my children and grandchildren!
The Past is Always With Us.......2000-02-26
This book is a bittersweet collection of memories --- some hilarious, some heartbreaking --- of the coming of age in a small southern town. The group of friends who penned these stories share a heritage and a culture found in other locations. Anyone born from 1927 to 1935 can easily relate to the scenes depicted by the men and women of that era. Other readers can benefit from insight gained from those who are peers of their parents and grandparents. If you want to spend a weekend reliving your OWN youth, this book is for you. If you want the younger members of your family to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of you as an individual, this is for them!

Book Description
This sequel to part one of Brown's memoirs, deals with the second part of his career as a missionary priest. In the same fresh, first-person style as the first book, he describes his appointments even further north, within the Arctic Circle. Brown depicts moving a community (lock, stock and barrel and at government instigation) from one side of a bay on the Arctic Ocean to the other. He also relates small, often amusing details, such as the story of a woman about to fly south to deliver her baby in safety, who carried a suitcase filled with whale meat - to sustain her in labour, she said. Priest, Journalist/publisher, aviator, painter, trapper, fisher, hunter and guide, Bern Will Brown's adventure continues, right up to his marriage and the establishment of a hunting and fishing lodge.
Product Description
A stirring and sometimes heart-rending account of a preacher man from Wayne County, West Virginia, who battled through a hardscrabble childhood, the early deaths of a mother and three siblings, served his country and his God with honor and resolve, made many friends and a few enemies, and kept faith with his deepest beliefs.
