This definitive study brings together recent critiques of development and work in postcolonial studies to explore what the postcolonial condition has meant to rural people in the Third World. Focusing on local-level agricultural practices in India since the “green revolution” of the 1960s, Akhil Gupta challenges the dichotomy of “developed” and “underdeveloped,” as well as the notion of a monolithic postcolonial condition. In so doing, he advances discussions of modernity in the Third World and offers a new model for future ethnographic scholarship.
Based on fieldwork done in the village of Alipur in rural north India from the early 1980s through the 1990s, Postcolonial Developments examines development itself as a post–World War II sociopolitical ideological formation, critiques related policies, and explores the various uses of the concept of the “indigenous” in several discursive contexts. Gupta begins with an analysis of the connections and conflicts between the world food economy, transnational capital, and technological innovations in wheat production. He then examines narratives of village politics in Alipur to show how certain discourses influenced governmental policies on the green revolution. Drawing links between village life, national trends, and global forces, Gupta concludes with a discussion of the implications of environmentalism as exemplified by the Rio Earth Summit and an examination of how global environmental treaties may detrimentally affect the lives of subaltern peoples.
With a series of subtle observations on rural politics, nationalism, gender, modernization, and difference, this innovative study capitalizes on many different disciplines: anthropology, sociology, comparative politics, cultural geography, ecology, political science, agricultural economics, and history.

a huge success - no more famines.......2006-06-28

The book is fundamentally one of a huge historical success. For the first time in its history, India was able to adequately feed its huge population. There have not been famines for decades.

The text has details about how agriculture developed, after the British left. Most of the population lived in rural areas, and government policies for the most part proved effective and supportive. These included electrification and the building of agricultural surpluses for years of bad harvests. Plus, of course, there was the deployment of Green Revolution, with its higher yielding rice crops.

Which is not to say that deep poverty and malnutrition do not still exist. Or corruption in the government, for that matter. But famines seem to be confined to a distant part.

This book is intended for mathematicians working with partial differential equations and their applications, and physicists, geophysicists and engineers involved with experiments in nondestructive evaluation, seismic exploration, remote sensing and tomography.

Unreadable.......2007-04-21

One would think that Springer-Verlag would be able to afford an editor
for the second edition of a book they charge $80 for. Apparently not.
This book is so full of typos, misspellings, and bad grammar that it is
essentially unreadable. The completely stochastic sprinkling of "the"'s
and "a"'s throughout the text (a particular grammar difficulty of native
Russian speakers) suggests that no editor has ever read this manuscript.

On the positive side, the mathematical expertise of the author in PDE
theory is not in question, and the book does contain useful technical
information on inverse problems once you strip away the typos and
decipher the grammar.

Isakov describes various ways to solve the inverse problem. In simplest form, one might have, say, Poisson's equation. But whereas the conventional problem is to find the potential, given the source, the inverse problem involves knowing the potential, or its gradient, and having to find the source.

The book draws together many results which thus far have mostly resided in maths journals. Isakov explains common themes to these research papers. Plus, and more importantly to some readers, he also gives the practical contexts in which the problems might arise. Such include determining the inside of a portion of a person's body, given various external measurements. Or finding structural data of a machine from external probes. The basic situation is that we are often outside something, and cannot physically go inside that object in a non-destructive manner.

The level of maths is broadly accessible to a reader with an undergrad major in maths or physics.

The field of inverse problems is an important and rapidly developing direction in mathematical physics, differential equations and various applied technologies. This volume in the Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series focuses on direct and inverse problems for partial differential equations. The type of equations considered are hyperbolic, elliptic and mixed (elliptic-hyperbolic). The direct problems arise as generalizations from the inhomogeneous layer (or from the half-space). The inverse problems are those of determining medium parameters by giving the forms of incident and reflected waves or by giving the vibrations of certain points of the medium. The research method used of all inverse problems is spectral-analytical, consisting in reducing the considered inverse problems to know inverse problems for the Sturm-Liouville equation or for the string equation. Discrete inverse problems are also considered in this volume. In these problems an arbitrary set of point sources (emissive sources, oscillators, point masses) are determined. This volume will be of value and interest to researchers and scientists in mathematical physics, geophysics and biophysics.

Hald and McLaughlin prove that for almost all rectangles the potential in a Schrödinger equation is uniquely determined (up to an additive constant) by a subset of the nodal lines. They derive asymptotic expansions for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Using only the nodal line positions, they establish an approximate formula for the potential and give error bounds.

The theory is appropriate for a graduate topics course in analysis with emphasis on inverse problems.

This is the first full-scale biography of Nathan Smith -- medical pioneer, founder of Dartmouth Medical School and cofounder of three other medical schools (Yale, Vermont, and Bowdoin), and progenitor of a long line of physicians.
